What’s Size Got to Do With It hosts Maren Hunt and Sophie McCollum, are two certified health coaches who have made it their mission to expose the harm caused by diet culture. In a world that is obsessed with being thin, Sophie and Maren guide you through how to begin healing your relationship with food and your body so that you can live a life filled with joy and satisfaction. Together they shed light on how the size and weight of your body does not dictate your health, or more importantly your worth.
Hello beauties!! Sophie and I are so happy to be back and this episode was soo good! We discuss some of the history of when women became the target to control, manipulate, silence our voice and bodies. It really began during the eugenics and segregation of races era when men wanted to find a way to differentiate white women from black women. So.... they chose our bodies to shrink and silence as a way to keep us obedient. Not much has changed other than the hundreds of fad diets and bodies that we are continuously chasing to conform to, but yet again by the time we get there (if that's even realistic because for 99% of us it's not), another body shape ideal will come out of the woodworks!
We want you to know that you have full permission to take a different path, own your body autonomy, own your voice and who you are! If you want to get off the hamster wheel of misery, we will be right there to support you! We hope you enjoy this episode and if so, please leave a quick review as it really helps the podcast. We appreciate our listeners so much and we want nothing more but for you to reach food freedom and body peace!
We're back!!!
In this weeks episode we are praising one of Maintenance Phase's host and author Aubrey Gordon on hew new book '"You Just Need To Lose Weight" and 19 Other Myths About Fat People'. We discuss an all too pervasive belief that so many people have, that a person's body weight and size is a choice. We break down the many factors that contribute to body size, how anti-fatness harms individuals and society as a whole, and why this issue NEEDS to be addressed.

In this episode, Sophie and Maren shed light on what they have come to find in the toxic Wellness Culture space. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying to improve your health, but when its coming at a high cost from your wallet to your mental and physical health, its important to start questioning their intentions. More than ever, this country is spending billions of dollars on wellness products, cleanses, expensive yoga wear, organic whole foods, and stressing out over which coconut oil is the most superior. The marketing by wellness culture sends most people into distress when they cannot attain the "perfect yoga body" or "gym bod" because in their advertisements, they make it look so effortless (When 98% of it is unattainable). Wellness culture has put PERFECTION on a pedestal that most people cannot attain. This has nothing to do with willpower and discipline, but more do to with the lack of resources, financial stability, access to whole foods, and the large amount of pressure and shame that come along with living this lifestyle. Many people have subscribed to wellness culture thinking this would improve their well-being, but for many it has turned into their religion. Eating disorders such as Orthorexia have erupted from wellness culture messages. People are becoming deeply fearful of sugar and processed food. The amount of time, money, and commitment to this following is insurmountable. This culture leaves us feeling discouraged, like failure, and inferior. This isn't about health. This is about being top dog and brainwashing us while rolling in the dough. Achieving health should not come at a cost.

Hello and welcome back to another episode of What's Size Got To Do With It! Today Sophie and Maren talk about a mental predicament that many people are sitting with, and that is holding back on living your life to the fullest or feeling held back because of the size of your body.
It is common for people to think "I'll wear the bikini when I lose weight", or "I'll start dating once I lose weight."
This thought about waiting to live your life until you lose the weight has become a common thread amongst people today. So many of us are so focused on shrinking our bodies that we end up shrinking our life instead.
But what if the life you desire could be achieved now? Without losing weight, or changing your body?
Sophie and Maren discuss these very questions and give you steps and practices that you can start to do in order to challenge your limiting beliefs, inner critic and start to show up boldly and confidently in your life NOW.
Click here to access an inner critic journaling practice that was discussed in this episode.
Click here to access an exposure therapy exercise to start wearing the clothes you desire! If you are looking for 1:1 support in making peace with food and your body during the Holidays, Sophie has a few client spots available! Do you fear the Holidays that are right around the corner? Sure, you may have anxiety towards seeing certain family members and the stress that comes with the Holidays, but the fear around candy, baked goods, and traditional family dishes can certainly trump everything else when it's all around you. Sophie and Maren share their past relationships with Halloween, their fear around candy, and how much they sacrificed the enjoyment of these special occasions just to control their weight and appearance.
They also share a step by step guide on how to face your fears around candy so you can prepare yourself this year and start to truly make peace with food. Do you remember being a child and really looking forward to Halloween? The costumes, scary movies, parties, and of course trick - or - treating? Depending on how you were raised, you may have had a very positive relationship with food and in this case, candy or you grew up with a family that monitored your candy and talked incessantly about dieting, good and bad foods, and health. Our societal conditionings have really skewed our beliefs around candy, Holiday treats, and just food in general. To the point, where we give all our power away to food, punish ourselves with food or by denying it, and shame our bodies constantly. This my friends is no way to live and no way to get through the Holidays in one peace. Halloween should be seen as a celebratory day (if you love Halloween) where you make memories and allow your inner child to come out and play. Candy is absolutely not the enemy for it serves its purpose of pleasure and satisfaction, but its also just candy. When you feel at ease around candy, you will probably notice a shift in your taste buds as well as less of a pull to want it. Why? Because its always going to be there and you have full permission to have it when you want. That is what Sophie and Maren want for all of you, is to have full freedom around food and honor your body's needs for nourishment which has absolutely everything to do with your health and wellbeing! This Halloween can be different for you in every way if you allow yourself to face your fears.
If you are looking for 1:1 support in making peace with food and your body during the Holidays, Sophie has a few client spots available! You can book a free 30 minute consultation by clicking on this link : https://calendly.com/nourishedbysophie/30min?month=2022-10
Fear of gaining weight is the number one reason that prevents most people from making peace with food and ditching their diets once and for all. In this episode Sophie and Maren share their personal experiences with navigating weight gain as they went through their eating disorder and Intuitive Eating journeys.
As they discuss their different lived experiences with weight gain, they also acknowledge the culture we live in that places a hierarchy on bodies. Disclaimer: Maren and Sophie are not in any way against therapy & ED treatment. They just share their own experiences with licensed professionals.
Maren and Sophie wanted to shed on a topic that isn't spoken about very often. That is, poor eating disorder treatment and seeing licensed ED professionals that were not truly qualified to help those suffering with this illness.
Sophie shares her story of seeking traditional therapy for her depression and anxiety and how her therapist really didn't equip her with the tools she needed to overcome it. Her mental state at that time opened up the doors for her eating disorder to take a front seat in her life. After years of coping with Orthorexia and bulimia, depression, anxiety and undiagnosed ADHD, Sophie started to do her own ED recovery research and came across Intuitive Eating. From there, this sparked her interest as she was desperate to recover and decided to devote her life to mending her relationship with food and her body. She didn't seek therapy, but instead found as many free resources as she could such as social media, books, podcasts, and the internet to help her reach a full recovery.
Maren's experience was a 20 year battle of going from inpatient treatment to outpatient and seeing ED therapists. Her first and last time in treatment was nothing she ever thought she would go through. Unfortunately, the professionals deemed her illness as something she would have to live with for the rest of her life. Their beliefs and curriculum were heavily rooted in Diet Culture and fatphobia. Unfortunately, Maren came out of treatment worse than she has gone in there for, learning even more disordered behaviors. As the years went by and she kept seeking therapy, she found a very common thread between a lot of them:
It wasn't until Maren found a Certified Health and Body Image Coach that she finally found someone she could trust and relate to. She was blown away by the education and tools that were being shared with her. Especially because her coach had no licensure. Maren realized that just because a health professional is licensed, doesn't mean they are qualified to help those suffering. Her coach had a very similar story to Maren's and her passion and commitment to help her was noticed.
This is all to say that you never know who is really qualified to help until you build that trust and see their true commitment in their work. This is another reason why Sophie and Maren are so passionate about their roles in the ED community. They have met many women who have experienced trauma and lack of respect in treatment. This tends to make them believe that they may never recover. But the truth is, there are ED recovery professionals out there, licensed or not, and their mission is to assist their clients in making a full recovery.
Don't give up beauties! You deserve to be seen and heard and given the tools to reclaim your life back.

**This episode is JUICY!! Maren and Sophie share why food is so much more than fuel and that eating for pleasure is actually a need for our survival. Many of us have been taught (by diet culture) that food is just for fuel, not for pleasure, so just suck it up and eat what the diet(s) tell you to even if you have to choke it down with water. But as you may have experienced, when you ignore you cravings and desires, you end up obsessing about food even more and eventually give in resulting in a guilt binge fest. It doesn't matter how full you get off of veggies, if you aren't giving your body what it asks for, it eventually will demand it until it gets its needs met. Hence why you struggle with binge eating and overeating.
Sophie and Maren dive deep into 3 studies about the negative effects that arise when we force ourselves to eat food we don't enjoy and continue to ignore our hunger and cravings. When the body is receiving pleasure from food, you are actually turning on the metabolism so it can use its energy burning power in high effect! When you are constantly, fearing food, controlling what you can and cannot eat, and not allowing pleasure, your energy burning metabolism decreases immensely.
Maren and Sophie go on to talk about cholecystokinin, CCK - a chemical that aids digestion by stimulating certain organs that break down food as well as notifies the body to shut down appetite. Then we have neuropeptide Y, an amino acid that signals the body to search for food. When you are depriving yourself of pleasure from food, NPY increases immensely and CCK cannot do its job properly. NPY teaches us that we cannot in fact escape pleasure from food because pleasure is what helps break down our food into energy, extract the nutrients we are taking in, and ignites our calorie burning metabolism!
This is your permission slip to start giving yourself unconditional allowance to enjoy food so you can actually receive the benefits that will greatly enhance your health and wellbeing!

Is the term weight stigma new to you? I know when I (Sophie) started my intuitive eating journey and before my career change, I had no idea what weight stigma was. It was never talked about in schools, by doctors, or mentioned in media. Yet it was and still is one of the most prevalent forms of discrimination. Well, we are all about delivering the truth, and this is a topic that needs awareness and attention. In this episode we take a deep dive into the topic of weight stigma and how it shows up in different areas of your life including, schools, work, relationships, and healthcare. And give you tips and tools for how you can navigate it.

Sophie and Maren both encourage their clients to research the myths developed by diet culture because it was these false beliefs that created their distorted relationship with food. In order to reduce shame and keep turning the blame of the diet not working onto yourself, you need to turn that finger to the culprit - the diet industry. Debunking these myths helped Maren and Sophie in healing their relationship with food and their body and want to continue to spread the tea about these false statements : weight equaling health, carbs are bad, and to avoid processed foods.
Maren recently created a body image workshop seminar to help those trying to work through their body shame. The reason why we struggle with food is because we have this belief that are bodies are broken and need to be fixed. Through this seminar, Maren breaks down what beliefs really are and how our society has conditioned us to feel insecure about our bodies as well as develop fatphobia. She discusses how to start restructuring your current core limiting beliefs which is key in reconditioning the brain as well as walks you through the stages of grief that is necessary to let go of the thin dream. We're back this week with an episode that is a must listen! This week we discuss how beliefs are formed and how our conditioning as humans begins. You know those negative thoughts that pop up when you try on a pair of jeans that are too small? Or, when you see a picture of yourself you do not like? What if I told you that you actually had the power to change them? And what if even better you could turn those thoughts into empowering statements instead?
Guess what? You can! We go deep into the science behind how our brains create these beliefs and how you can start reconditioning them into beliefs that support and uplift you. If you have ever struggled with limiting beliefs of any kind, you are not going to want to miss this episode!

In this episode, Sophie and Maren walk you through the steps on how to start breaking your foods rules so you can finally feel at ease around food and truly find pleasure and satisfaction again. When we try to control food, what is really happening is we are being controlled by food. This leads to feeling out of control around food and we start believing in this narrative that we can't trust ourselves or our bodies around food. Diet Culture has inserted this narrative into our minds and its time to prove them wrong! You deserve food freedom and you have the right to eat whatever you want, ALWAYS! Your body is the internal compass for knowing what you need. That is why we receive cravings and desires. So get a pen and paper, and take some notes! This is a juicy episode of how to break you food rules one at a time. Bye bye food police!
Im this weeks episode we discuss why complimenting weight loss is a harmful and problematic practice. We explain the hidden messages that are actually being said when you make these comments. Both Maren and myself (Sophie) share how these compliments have affected us throughout our lives and how we reacted to them. In this episode, Sophie and Maren discuss the term "Sugar Addiction" and how many people are convinced they are addicted to sugar. How they feel is completely valid, but in truth sugar addiction is not in the DSM5 handbook of addictions. There is something deeper going on here and they discuss a few very important studies that show how restricting calories, types of foods, especially food that you find pleasurable can lead to feeling out of control around them. Restriction can cause you to obsessively think about food and the more you try to limit types of food and quantities, the more your body and brain want it! Which is why when you finally get your hands on it, all bets are off and the last supper mentality kicks in. Sophie and Maren talk about giving yourself unconditional allowance around all food as well as being present while eating so you can really connect to your hunger and fullness and the experience.

This week Sophie and Maren discuss the Weight Set Point Theory and how we really don't have full control over our weight. 70% of genetics determine our weight and every body has a weight set point where we are at our healthiest aka homeostasis. Our bodies do not want to dip below or above this range for when that happens, our physical, mental, and emotional health go into misalignment. This is why dieting is so harmful and puts our body in starvation, causing weight cycling, obsessive food thoughts, health issues, and so much shame when the weight is gained back because as most of us know, 95-98% of diets fail. Sophie and Maren share about the significant role of the brain and how it controls our weight and how diets interfere with our set point as well as cause harmful side effects to our well-being. If you are ready to break free from dieting, binge eating and body shame, follow us on social media! We both offer 1:1 coaching and would love to support you on your healing journey! Both Sophie and I share our recovery journey with you in this intro episode! We felt it was a great way to kick off our first season. Both of us struggled with binge eating, restriction, food rules, body image and more. Sophie and I talk about our struggles with bulimia and how hitting rock bottom saved our lives. Both of us immersed ourselves into our recovery journey, learning as much as we could so we could overcome the limiting beliefs and behaviors.
