In this episode of The Curious Midlife, Wendy Welpton, a natural movement coach and inspirer based in Oxford England, shares her personal journey with movement and injury and how it led her to discover the benefits of natural movement.

Wendy discusses her passion for movement, from high-impact gym sessions during her desk-bound years in London to discovering a love for running after becoming a mother. However, a hip injury at 40 led to four years of chronic pain and a diagnosis of twisted pelvis and piriformis syndrome due to sacroiliac joint instability. This forced Wendy to re-evaluate her approach to movement and led her on a journey to explore natural movement patterns.

Throughout the episode, Wendy shares her insights on the importance of finding what works best for you, stepping out of your comfort zone, listening to your body, and the benefits of natural movement. She also talks about her experiences with rehabilitation and how it led to a fascination with how the body works.

Wendy's story is inspiring and relatable for anyone who has struggled with injury or limitations in their movement practice. Her passion for natural movement and her dedication to helping others find joy in movement shine through in this episode of The Curious Midlife. Our society has normalised the art of pushing through. Many people, especially busy midlife women, exist in a constant state of fight or flight. Perhaps you have fallen for the trap of hustle culture or simply convinced yourself that you only need 4-5 hours of sleep to get by. What you may not realise is the deeper impact that lack of sleep has on your cognition, mental health, nervous system and overall wellness.

Dr. Nerina is an author, physiologist and sleep expert dedicated to helping people thrive, sleep more deeply and live more joyfully. In this podcast, Dr. Nerina breaks down all things sleep. From misconceptions to overcoming insomnia to types of sleepers, this episode has something for everyone.

The speed of technology, globalisation and the competitive demands of daily life have made it difficult for people to slow down and prioritise sleep. Many people have deemed it acceptable or normal to reduce rest in their life when really we should be placing this at the pinnacle of our daily priorities.

How you sleep mirrors how you live. While it may not have as much of an impact on you in your 20s and 30s, midlife is a time to shift routines to better support a lifestyle of longevity. It’s time to value yourself enough to give yourself the gift of more sleep and more energy.

If you are the architect of your life, how do you want to feel from the moment you wake up to when you fall asleep?
There's an art to this design of life.
How you design your life and the space you live in all has intention.

Without intention, you're never going to achieve a good design. In this episode, Dr. Julie Angel talks about how you can create balance in your life, design it with intention, the magic of aligning and designing, and the connection between mind and body. Listen to this episode and be the architect of your own life!

Waking Up at Ease

[01:09]

If you want to wake up feeling at ease, you need to have balance in your life. If you wake up feeling at ease, you have space and a bandwidth of energy within that. And this pertains to one's thoughts, feelings, intellect, and physical space. Most of the time, people need to check whether it is something that they can cope with or not. Before engaging in something, you must ensure you can do and fulfil your basic needs.

Positive Ageing

[05:47]

Everyone wants to learn and improve, which can be associated with positive aging. It gives us the opportunity for more research. Once you stop ageing, everything stops, and you will no longer reflect and know what’s right or wrong. What you should and can do more of, and what would be advisable to lessen or to cut out all together.

Set a Goal that You Can Achieve

[9:07]

Sometimes our lives are designed on short-term goals that we haven’t thought about what the consequences of that would be in the future. Sometimes it's even based on something that is fantastical/impossible that we are unable to achieve. You should set a goal that is possible to achieve. It is more motivating that way. You can even achieve more than your set goals.

Redesign

[10:40]

If you don’t like what’s currently happening in your life, you should try to redesign it. Consider the features of the design. What factors do you consider when designing? What is lacking for you?

[11:31]

Many people believe they lack the room necessary to complete things. And while they do have space, it needs to be carefully designed. They need to design the area with good intentions. They need to design the area with an understanding of what functions well and what doesn't.

Good Options

[12:32]

For you to have good options that you’ll surely agree to, you should notice all the little things in life. They may seem uninteresting, but they are sometimes the key to aligning and designing your life.

[13:06]

In redesigning your life, think about your space, your desires, and the things that make you uncomfortable, painful, and frustrated. What are the challenges in your life that you could redesign?

Mind and Physiology

[13:50]

The mind and our physiology are connected. If your body can rest freely, you’ll be able to wake up feeling good and be in a good mood for the whole day. You will be able to do things physically, mentally, and emotionally. Both the mind and physiology are in constant communication, helping each other.

Closing

[15:08]

Consider how you want your life to be designed as you have the power to do so. You should also think about the things that are influencing you negatively and are making you lose your goal.

In this episode of The Curious Midlife Podcast, Dr. Julie Angel talks about how movement and training is emotional yet people rarely think of it in those terms. She also talks about how our emotions around and about movement affects everything that we do in life and tells us how to pull ourselves together and use it to our advantage.

Emotional Movement

[1:14]

Many people either ignore or are not aware of the idea that movement is emotional. These feelings control our behavior, both actively and passively. For many people, the main factor preventing them from moving is how we think about moving.

Cold Starts

[2:11]

Although movement breeds movement, not all movement is equal. In comparison to how you move when you are already invigorated, how we move when we are fatigued to re-energize oneself is extremely different or might be very different. We frequently assume that we already have the energy to move when we think about moving. A cold start is what is referred to as such.

Baseline

[5:48]

Our movement patterns don't reflect who we are at our most basic whether we're warmed up or on a good day. The majority of the time, our baseline is what defines how effectively or poorly we perform various tasks.

Consistency and Sustainability

[7:24]

Your movement practice's consistency and longevity will ultimately depend on how you approach it, how you think about it, and what decisions you made in the past. Those are the two main factors that will help you advance in your movement trip and live a long time.

Change

[12:28]

Change is difficult because it requires more effort than maintaining the current quo, whether you are overtrained or undertrained. Therefore, how we move, what we choose to do that is sustainable, what we can do that is creative, and what will feed us will all depend on how we think about our movement. Additionally, we frequently still seek out immediate pleasure. You never got to the situation you were in overnight. Therefore, it is unlikely that a solution will materialise quickly.

How much do you move in a day? We all know movement is life. It enhances our lives in ways we cannot imagine. According to Petra Fisher, a movement coach, working on your feet pays off. It connects us to the ground. Our feet hugely impact our ankles, knees, hips, pelvic floor, low back, spine, neck, and shoulders.

Petra joined the outdoor movement after having a career in the corporate world that didn't feel like the IT for her. Her body was physically broken, and she wouldn't do a lot of things. The therapy sessions she attended made her realise she loved working with bodies more than being in corporate. It led her to movement coaching. She started working with Katie Bowman.

Petra enjoyed how her life was changing for the better and decided to quit her job to pursue her newfound journey, which gave her the freedom to be outdoors all the time.
In this episode, Petra shares how movement changed her life, what inspired her to become an outdoor person, the benefits of adding movement to your daily routines, the different places she has lived, and her journey to developing strong, happy feet, among other things.

[01:03] Getting to know Petra
[04:12] What led Petra to choose her life of movement coaching and being a nomad?
[08:11] The truth about surfing
[14:16] The importance of movement as a daily practice

[01:14:29] What's in the pipeline for Petra at the moment?

Magical Gems from the Episode:
"How you feel after surfing is such an intense flow state that I always find it very hard to get anything else done."

"When you're thinking about your movement life, there's a huge place for specific, focused exercises to help you figure out those blind spots and repatterning."

"CARS, as a regular daily practice, let you move all your joints and all of their biggest ranges."

"Our culture is good at measuring and avoiding acute risks, things that will kill you, but that doesn't happen very often."

"A foot transition is never a single journey. You don't go from a shot human to a barefoot human and expect that your feet will be fine. What your feet are going to do is evolve constantly in response to the movement environment that you're giving them."

"People think travelling is being on holiday, which it is not. For me travelling was about this constant adaptation to the unknown."

"I like to think about my life more as a set of toolboxes and priorities."
"We need to start making movement more normal if we all want to thrive."

Starting is always the hardest part so they say. And I've seen that time and time again.

I'm a big fan of the science of small wins and in thinking small if you want big change. And creating changes that are sustainable and will serve you well.

In todays podcast I dive into what that means and could look like. Why finding your own style of Movement that brings you joy is key.

Recognising that movement is emotional.

How the interconnectedness of Movement Snacks, an Age Positive Mindset, Parkour & Play and of course Strong Resting are what is going to lead to sustainable success.

This is the MAPS system that I use with all of my 1:1 clients in my 12 week course designed to help midlife women reclaim and increase their physical strength & confidence so they get their mojo back, feel brave and have adventures and age with grace.

If any of my message or approach resonated with you, you can book a free discovery call and we can identify where you're at, where you want to get to and what that might look like.

In January 2021 I decided to join Damien Norris's very generous and free 365 days to a Handstand on Facebook.

It taught me and revealed way more than the physical act of a free standing handstand.

Trusting in the process, consistency, support and accountability. What it means to trust in the process and simply show up.

The link between fear and our physical abilities and how health, fitness and strength are all a process of delayed gratification. The body knows.

Thank you Damien! If you want to follow this programme and reach out to Damien, here is Day 1, there is a full playlist on his YouTube channel to guide you through the year :)
