Learn from our mistakes…here’s how to make sure you keep your friends this summer. They say making friends as an adult is hard… but whoever said that for the first time had never tried being an overnight camp director, juggling the demands of a 24/7 job with friends back home.
We don’t claim to be experts on this, we have certainly lost some friends and damaged other friendships over the summer and we want you to learn from us.

Giving back isn’t as hard as you think! Many of us are fortunate to have incredible mentors in our lives, people we can turn to, ask questions to and share our failures with.
But how do you become a mentor?
Do you have to have worked in the industry for 50 years? Do you have to be a walking encyclopedia of answers? We would argue no - the best mentors are those who know themselves, know what they have to offer and can connect you with others.
You’re ready to be a mentor, we believe in you!

A moment at camp pointed her towards social work which eventually came full circle as a friend and ally of the camping world.

The impact of camp is “boundless” - here’s how that played out for Kevin AmiraultRemember those initiative tasks you ran as an outdoor ed staff member or camp counselor? Those ones with the marbles that seemed to frustrate kids to no end? Tune in today to hear how our guest Kevin Amirault turned a love of initiative tasks, metaphors and building relationships into a career as a school social worker and how he works every day to bring a little bit of camp into the school building.
Kevin is a Master’s level Social Worker currently working as a School Social Worker in Ottawa. Kevin grew up attending YMCA Camp Chief Hector in the Canadian Rockies and spent several summers working as a counsellor there, and credits his camp experience as contributing to his life direction, as well as fostering the skills to be successful on that path. Kevin completed an undergraduate degree in Outdoor Adventure Leadership at Laurentian University, before beginning work at the intersections of camp, education and psychotherapy, first at The Boundless School and then more specifically in adventure therapy at Wendigo Lake Expeditions - with a brief stint at Camp Kandalore along the way.
Throughout his Master’s studies and in his current role, Kevin has pursued an interest in nature-based and adventure therapy, nature as a determinant of health, group dynamics and facilitation, suicide intervention and emotion-focused approaches to mental health.

Which comes first, our relationship or our work? Many of us know that perhaps the answer should be our relationships but is that always true? Today we aren’t holding back as we unpack the pros and cons of having a partner who doesn’t get camp and the surprising benefits it can bring into our lives.
We all know that there are some people who just don’t seem to ‘get camp’. Perhaps they are the folks who ask us what it is we do all year long or who refer to us as ‘camp counselors’ long after we have told them that we are directors… this is a particular pet peeve of mine. We all have our strategies for dealing with these folks but what happens when one of them just so happens to be your spouse? Today we have Kathleen Gurski today to hear how she copes
Kathleen’s extensive background brings almost 20 years of experience in camping, outdoor ed and recreation, the majority of which has been working with special populations. Kathleen. She likely wouldn’t say it herself, but she is expert level when it comes to topics including social-emotional learning, Youth with learning disabilities, creating and supporting diverse staff teams, and building long-term sustainable youth programs. Kathleen is passionate about working with her staff team to ensure that camp and recreation programs evolve to align with the changes in participants’ lives, interests, and needs.

We often call camp a place apart from the “real world”. But what happens when it isn’t? And should it be different? How do we navigate social justice, politics and other sensitive subjects all within the camp experience? Is social justice inherently political? Do politics have a place at camp? What if we took it back to our why, ‘why are we doing these things or holding these values’ and placed campers at the center of our work?
This work isn’t easy, it can be messy and we can stumble. Join us as we chat with Laura Kriegel and Allison Klee from Stomping Ground about how we can create spaces at camp for challenging discussions that welcome all viewpoints as we teach campers how to listen with radical empathy.

While overseeing parent communications, managing social media, content and marketing, her connection to our camperbase is always kept a top priority. With infallible determination and deep love for her community, she spends her time coming up with new ways to bring people together and advancing the camp industry to the standard she envisions. This year she’s hosted The Inspiring Radical Empathy Podcast, pioneered our virtual platform Hometown Stomping Ground, and created a forum to drive what she believes is most important at camp through facilitating Restorative Justice Trainings.
Klee will begin working on her Master of Social Work in the fall of 2021.
-
Laura Kriegel - The commitments to equity and inclusivity at Stomping Ground are a direct result of co-founder Laura Kriegel’s passion and constant work for creating the spaces she knows the world needs more of. Laura’s creativity and background as an artist is felt by everyone who steps foot on camp and informs our program and new forever home outside of Saratoga Springs in all aspects. A recent graduate of the Masters in Social Work program at Columbia University, Laura shares her devotion to the correction of social issues with the larger camp community by being a thought leader and facilitating trainings on Restorative Justice.

Looking within needs to happen first.Today we are talking about identity, privilege and affinity groups. This conversation might be hard. We encourage you to sit in that discomfort, to challenge yourself and to learn. We do want to let our listeners know that this conversation is shared from the perspective of three white people and that our discussions around affinity groups are aimed at other white folks. None of us are perfect, we are at different points in our learning journeys and we all have a long way to go.
We’re joined by Matt Honsberger, Go Camp Pro’s Executive Producer of Podcasting and Experiential Educator in Toronto Ontario. Matt shares his journey in exploring his white-privilege, anti-racism work and participation in affinity groups.
Please, come and sit with us as we grow together.

What is Beyond Camp?Beyond Camp is a new summer Podcast brought to you by Go Camp Pro.
Cassie Bloy and Rachel Kent are here to explore the intersection of camp and our lives. As much as people like to talk about camp and ‘the real world’ as two separate entities, camp professionals know that this simply isn’t true. Beyond Camp dives into how different aspects of our lives affect our camp experience, effectively bursting the camp bubble and welcoming all parts of our lives into the conversation.
Go Camp Pro is excited to bring you this weekly podcast during the summer of 2020.
