Sunday Edition Presents: The High Partial Experience

Last Month Sunday Edition began a series of conversations to promote understanding and move towards healing and uniting. This month we will continue with the High Partial Experience. Some of us may agree that there seems to be a hierarchy of status in our community. . There are certain cliques and groups that feel micro-aggressions and differing treatment by other groups and cliques. With all the disagreement of late in our organization it has become clear we need to begin the hard work of understanding and respecting each other for our shared advocacy and issues as well as; if not more important our differences. Sunday Edition continues the conversation focusing on the experiences of our Brothers, Sisters and non binary siblings who are “High Partials. , Panelists include: Zelda Gebhard, Jessica Tomlinson, Robyn Wallen, Terry Pacheco and Becky Dunkerson; A great conversation to have as we all also shout out the :”Mothers” in our lives; all mom’s of all ilks. The focus of this conversation will be to shine a light on some of the perceived differences of how High Partials experience ACB and its offerings and community. Pam and I agree that keeping the format close to the first conversation and continuing to stoke the bravery is the way to promote the second half of the show dedicated to brainstorming healing ideas and promoting getting to know each otherss experiences. We will ask you to share from your personal experience and allow for us to open to the audience for theirs.

Often it feels like a invisible barrier is placed for those of us who have lost sight mid life. Episode NotesThis week Anthony, Brynn and crew welcome Tristan and Richard of Imagination Storybooks to discuss their mission, vision and passion for making great stories as rich and robust as possible for the kids of our community.

Richard Rieman and Tristan Snyder are part of the team behind Imagination Storybooks, a multi-award-winning non-profit that creates fully accessible children’s books from illustrated children’s books in audio and video formats. Imagination Storybooks creates audio narration of the story, then adds vivid audio descriptions of the illustrations. In the video versions, they then add captions and American Sign Language. Then they create Braille versions of the story with the image descriptions for deaf blind people.

Richard is the founder of the company, and Tristan is the executive producer and head of audio.

Bios:

Richard Rieman wanted to be Superman, but he couldn’t fly, so he decided to be Clark Kent instead. After a long career as a radio news reporter, anchor and a Washington Bureau Chief, Richard turned his storytelling skills to the world of audio books. He has narrated and produced hundreds of indie published audio books, and is the author of the award-winning book, “The Author’s Guide to Audio Book Creation.” Richard was a volunteer narrator for Learning Ally as well as being a ski guide for blind skiers. Combining both interests, Richard created the non-profit Imagination Storybooks to make children’s illustrated books accessible to all children.

Tristan Snyder is a multi-award-winning voice talent, director and audio producer. Upon joining the Screen Actors Guild and discovering multiple Chris Snyders, he realized that like the Highlander, there could only be one, so he changed his name. Tristan has worked in the Audio Description industry for over 20 years in every aspect of the field, and has narrated and produced thousands of hours of audio description in TV and film. He is a character voice actor for animation and audio drama, and has written and produced full cast audio dramas as well. He is currently the executive producer and head of audio for Imagination Storybooks, a non-profit which creates described audio books from children’s illustrated books. He advocates for, and practices the hiring and inclusion of blind and visually impaired talent in the audio production industry.

When the confusion began, we decided to go straight to the guy in charge to discuss the changes and reasons for them. Episode NotesThis week on Sunday Edition, we celebrate MLK Weekend and honor the transfiguring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr with our special guest host and friend of the show, Mark Richert, who will share a recording of one of Dr. King’s most stirring messages entitled, “But If Not,” a powerful call and challenge to all of us to discover and commit to a great cause. Captured just less than five months before his assassination, this moving sermon deeply convicts the listener today who, reflecting on the cutting short of Dr. King’s relatively young life, here’s his unflinching exhortation that, “If you haven’t found something so dear that you aren’t willing to die for it then you aren’t fit to live.” Then, after inviting the audience to share their reactions, Mark will moderate a panel discussion with ACB leaders to discuss perspectives on the life and legacy of Dr. King as they have influenced ACB’s own history and commitment to civil and human rights and the challenges that lay before ACB and our community generally, with panelists being asked to answer a fundamental question, “What cause or conviction do you have that you believe is worthy of sacrifice and wholehearted commitment?” It is a particular treat to welcome Mark to the host’s microphone in that Mark successfully bid on this hosting opportunity in this past December’s ACB Holiday Auction.

Mark will be inviting some great friends including Cheryl Cumings the Chair of MCAC committee and he looks forward to the open round-table conversation with Sunday Edition Audience members in the second hour.

Episode NotesThis week Anthony Welcomes Nefertiti Matos Olivares and Chad Chennil the creative vision and voice behind Meggy Eggie of the wildly popular ATK Mystery Recipe podcast. We talk representation, diversity and what it took to bring a bi-lingual Low Vision character to life. The show blends entertainment with learning and not just how to execute a recipe. Teaching her friends about being blind or low vision and showing her talents in the kitchen Meggy has quickly become a fan favorite. Nefertiti and her amazing voice and laugh bring such heart to Meggy and I am so happy they brought a few clips for us to enjoy as well.

Then in the second hour Anthony welcomes Marty Sobo and Michael Babcock of Unmute Presents. This popular Tech call and emerging business has become a goto staple for our community and we get to know them behind the proverbial MIC’s. Their individual stories and journey of friendship makes them dynamic partners who enrich ACB and the Blind Low Vision community beyond.

Since I will be beginning my holiday celebrations early this year I did not want to leave Sunday Edition Audiences without any new shows before the new year so we pre-recorded this episode for you.

Episode Notes This week Anthony and us all get to know Nefertiti. You may remember her memorable turn at the ADP Awards Gala or her work on Say His Name; Five Days for George Floyd. She has an accomplished career in helping our community gain the knowledge we need to live more independent lives and now as her career shifts into the world of Audio Description she will share with us her experiences and how to break into the business.

Nefertiti Matos is a fervent advocate for accessible culture, tech, and transit. She currently works as the Partnership Development Coordinator for Dicapta, a provider of accessible media for people with sensory disabilities. Previously, Nefertiti worked as an Assistive Technology Educator for the New York Public Library, where she offered individual coaching, and created and facilitated group workshops on a range of tech topics for the blind and low vision community in both English and Spanish. Nefertiti strongly believes in doing her part to bring about a world in which universal access is the norm, not the exception.

Then in the second hour Anthony catches up with Zelda and her Walk To Omaha.

In our second hour Anthony speaks with Katie and Richard about their new roles and all things APH Connect.

Katie Frederick currently serves as the Digital Content Manager for VisionAware, part of the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) ConnectCenter. In this role, she works with colleagues creating and promoting content for individuals and families impacted by blindness or vision loss. Prior to joining APH, Katie was the Community Manager and Accessibility Lead for the International Association of Accessibility Professionals (IAAP), supporting the organization’s committees, chapters, taskforces, and providing digital accessibility guidance. Katie previously worked at Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD), as a Program Administrator, responsible for outreach and community engagement efforts. In addition, Katie worked as an Accounting Technician for the federal government, served as a Digital Accessibility Specialist at the Ohio State University, and was the Executive Director of the American Council of the Blind of Ohio for several years. An active member of many nonprofit boards, Katie advocates for people who are blind or experiencing vision loss in Ohio and nationwide.

Richard Rueda has worked in the field of Human and Social Services specializing in Blindness and Low Vision since 1992. Richard began his professional career in 2001 with the State of California’s Department of Rehabilitation (DoR) as a Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. In 2005, Richard stepped into the statewide role of Transition Coordinator at DoR where he worked with students and staff at the California School for the Blind as well as hosting summits and Transition forums across California. Since 2010 Richard worked with well-known nonprofits in southern and northern California, including Junior Blind of America and LightHouse for the Blind, where he continued to organize, implement, lead and influence Pre-Employment Transition Services (Pre ETS) residential and nonresidential programs. Relocating to Sacramento in 2015, Richard joined Society for the Blind to develop CareersPLUS, a one-of-a-kind Transition program for youth, young adults and families.

In autumn 2020, Richard joined the American Printing House for the Blind’s ConnectCenter, where he manages CareerConnect.

Presently, Richard continues to collaborate with agencies for the blind and disability organizations seeking consultation on promising practices in the Pre-ETS Transition field. Richard also participates on committees and boards of non profits advancing wellness and social justice for blind and under served populations.

Richard is a 2001 graduate of California State University of Los Angeles where he holds his bachelor’s degree in Vocational Counseling.

Episode Notes This week Anthony speaks with Penny, Sarah, Sheila and Melanie from GDUI about traveling internationally with your guide dogs. As some of you may know some major restrictions were put into place in July that the CDC and other agencies did not do well to let the public know and as a result some Guide Dog users were placed in unimaginable positions. Anthony will also speak to Dean (an ACB Member) who was forced to leave his guide in Nigeria after attending a Funeral due to the lack of his airline, school or any agency apprising him of the new restrictions.

Fear not folks, Due to the advocacy of Anthony, Gabriel Lopez Kafati; Penny and the ladies of GDUI; and with help from a few of the Guide schools this matter was addressed and some of the restrictions have been lifted. We will bring you explanations of the new rules and regulations as well as go over a checklist we should all have when traveling out of the country with our beloved guides.

Judy and Steve are well regarded in our community and I am so pleased to speak with them this week. BONUS for us all is that they have agreed to spend some of their “California Style Anniversary” with us and I am sure Judy will have a story about that to share.

Steven Mendelsohn currently chairs the advocacy committee for the California Council Of The Blind. For decades he has written policy documents on disability issues and has also written several books including tax options and strategies for people with disabilities and is initial book financing adaptive technology.

Judy Wilkinson has spent many years actively in the California Council Of The Blind having served most recently for years as its president. Now she serves on several including project manager for the On The Move campaign fundraising partnership between CCB and On The Move. She also serves as liaison to several legal matters and looks forward to chairing the fundraising committee for the recently developed IDC affiliate in California.

I also invited dynamic duo: Ron and Lisa Brooks back to catch up. Beside being the reigning King and Queen of Karaoke they have a lot to share with us. From their tireless commitment to advocacy, Ron’s always sage advice and commentary on the ACB Lists to their new adventure it’s the perfect time to check in with these folks. Ron and Lisa Brooks are residents of Phoenix, long-time members of ACB and the Arizona affiliate, married for almost 25 years and parents of three teenagers. And about a year back, they launched a new business called Accessible Avenue. Ron shares that, “we formed Accessible Avenue to provide accessibility and inclusion related training, consulting and audio transcription services to cities, transit agencies and transportation providers so that people with disabilities, older adults and other transportation disadvantaged people can move about more freely. Prior to launching Accessible Avenue, Ron spent almost 28 years designing, delivering and managing accessible public transit and paratransit services for both public transit agencies and private companies. He defines his life’s mission as “transforming mobility for everyone,” and he is committed to mobility which is accessible, flexible and on-demand. Lisa is a lifelong learner, who loves words and the ideas and information that words can convey. In addition to her role with Accessible Avenue, Lisa is an audio transcriber who transforms spoken words into written ones that can be archived and repurposed for everything from blogposts to articles and books. She has been an assistive technology trainer, a professional researcher and a phone-based Customer Service Representative. “My mom was deaf,” shares Lisa, “and I can still remember the day we got closed captions for our TV. Episode Notes May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Sunday Edition is bringing together a panel of ACB folks who have something to say about the stigmas attached to Mental Health.

If one is slicing veggies and cuts into a finger or two one will head out to the ER or a urgent care. They may need stiches, wrapping and may even go home with a prescription or two. If one is diagnosed with a disease or condition one will be given options of treatment and areas of support. These medical situations will evoke support from friends and loved ones as they should. I am not naive enough to think everyone with medical issues get the support they need or deserve and there are varying degrees of what society seems to feel support is deserved. Take obesity for example, there is far less support or understanding than cancer or diabetes. Pulmonary issues are often scoffed as smokers punishment even if a person has never once lit a “Cancer Stick.”, while accurate its a moniker offering comfort right?

Break an arm get a cast and a bunch of autographs, but I could go on and on. Mental Health issues don’t often seem to fall into the support category. There are deep divides between Medical and Mental afflictions. And don’t get me started on Substance Abuse.

So I put an open call out to friends of Sunday Edition to tackle these stigmas and so much more.

Jeff Thom, Mark Richert, Jessi Rayl, Margie Donovan, Caitlin Hernandez and Lynn Coats join me for a honest, raw and deep conversation about our journeys through Mental Health issues and the ways we can and should be supporting each other. A few other Sunday Edition listeners will be calling in to offer up their own personal testimonials. There will be time in our second hour for listeners to comment and/or offer their stories.

This topic is close to my heart and I rally the call for all ACB Members and all citizens beyond our organization to pledge to offer more compassion, support and humanity to our brothers and sisters who are suffering.

Editor's Note: Deborah Kendrick is a successful free-lance writer who has a column on disabilities in the Cincinnati Enquirer that has been syndicated in a number of publications. She has three children.

When I was a little girl, I loved nothing more than my dolls. Tall dolls. Short dolls. Baby dolls and fashion dolls. But my favorite doll was Tiny Tears who smelled like a new shower curtain, could really drink from her baby bottle, and whose wet diaper needed changing. I wrapped her in a blanket, cut scraps of cloth to make extra T-shirts, and took her everywhere with me.

Even at the age of seven, I knew I was practicing to be a mother someday, and I can't remember a time when that plan was anything less than a certainty. When I was eight, my baby brother was born, and I got a lot of practice on a real live model. As a young teen-ager, I baby-sat for my brothers and cousins, and I never heard anyone wonder if I could do the job.

No one ever told me there was any reason I couldn't grow up to be a mommy. No one, in fact, ever told me that I couldn' t grow up to be just about anything in the world I dreamed of being.

The first time anyone ever raised the question of whether I, who had been blind since age five, could have and raise children, was when I was 26. I had three advanced degrees, three years of teaching to my credit, and had lived on my own (first single, then married) since age 21. Now, here I sat in the hospital with a pink-blanketed bundle in my arms, awestruck, wondering what I would do next.

I wanted some hands-on instruction in diapering. I told a nurse who was going off duty, and when her replacement came in, the experience was brutal. She pushed my hands away gruffly and impatiently, saying she could do it better. I felt inadequate and embarrassed. This episode shook my confidence in my ability to cope with the incredible responsibility of being a mother.

Of course, within hours, I learned that the nurse's ignorance about blindness was the problem, not my ability to fasten a baby's diaper! I would also learn that the attitudes of others would continue to be the most significant problem unique to parents with impaired vision.

New experiences

Today, I also realize that the feelings that I experienced holding the precious package that was my firstborn daughter were the same ones shared by mothers around the world. It is a temporary terror that we are not somehow up to the task before us. We are. I was. And so is every little child, blind or sighted, who wants to be a parent.

That terror fades in the face of necessity. You have to care for this baby, and so you do. My husband and I lived hundreds of miles from any relatives. I knew there was no one to bail me out,so I'd have to figure out how to do what this baby needed.

After 20 years of parenting three children, I know now that the easy part was back in those early days! The care babies need, after all, has nothing to do with sight. Bathing, diapering, feeding, cuddling,these are all tasks performed with hands, not eyes, and most people with impaired vision develop tactile skills that are well above average.

Organization is Key

Sure, I had to make adaptations along the way,just as I had to make certain adaptations in riding a bike, climbing a tree, or going to college as a kid who couldn't see. I read books. I talked to other mothers. I invented solutions as I went along.

Organizing objects and clearly defining spaces were two keys in the first three years. Toys, books, food, everything that needed a Braille label got one. I pinned outfits together before laundering so that my babies were color coordinated, and I always put toys away in the same place. I carried my babies first in front carriers, later in backpacks, and as toddlers, used child safety harnesses to keep them close to me in public places.

My children have all been extremely verbal, as I've noticed many children of parents with impaired vision to be. They have also all been early avid readers, probably a consequence of all my talking out of necessity and my obsession with being sure there were plenty of opportunities for learning.

It always amuses me that sighted people are so particularly focused on the fact that I cared for my children as babies. That was, without doubt, the easy part. A baby stays where you put her. Even when crawling or early walking, a baby is easy to keep within a defined area. It's when they become truly mobile, and later, truly individualized with their own opinions, that parenting, with or without sight, gets most challenging.

Safety First

As a blind parent I suppose I have placed more emphasis on safety than some of my sighted peers.

When walking with children, I insist on hand-holding to be sure where they are, particularly in parking lots or streets. I have also placed more emphasis on verbal communication. When called, my children have all learned from toddlerhood on to first respond verbally, and then come running. A blind parent, in other words, loses that luxury of glancing out the window or across the park to confirm that a child is swinging or climbing safely. Our verbal confirmation, then, is just one more minor adaptation.

Sure, there have been things we couldn't do. Someone else had to kick a soccer ball around with my eight-year-old, and someone else had to teach my older kids to drive. But no parent can do it all. On the other hand, I have taught other kids to bake cookies, write stories, sing songs.

Over the years I have known many other parents who are blind and seen many styles of parenting. Why should we expect anything less? Vision impairment is an equal opportunity disability and, as such, will affect people of all temperaments and leadership capabilities.

What I know for sure is that when it comes to parenting, the same rules apply for people with impaired vision as for all others. Anyone who wants to have children should do so, and will figure out the logistics as they go along. We have loved, laughed, and lived family life to the fullest in my household, and there is no person, no professional accomplishment, no privilege I could ever cherish more than my three children.

Once, when my daughter Melinda was about six, she threw a tantrum because I wouldn't let her stay up as late as a little girl down the street. "I wish Mrs. King was my mom," she wailed, as I tucked her into bed. "Well, too bad," I told her as I kissed her goodnight. "It's one mom per customer and you got me." Today, I smile from the inside out as I hear that same child, nearly 21 now, tell me on the phone, "I am so lucky to have you for a mom!"

Sunday Edition has been holding conversations about loosing sight, we have addressed the feelings behind not always receiving the services and support we may need and so many more deep conversations. In a candid, intimate and sometimes difficult but ultimately hopeful conversation, Friend to the show and First Vice President Mark Richert will open up about his recent struggles with significant depression and who with the caring encouragement of true friends, supportive professional pastoral counseling and priceless family and faith has life lessons to share. Mark has expressed the desire to share with ACB his story in the hopes it will inspire conversations for others who may be struggling and inspire all of us to remember to reach out to our friends and loved ones who may need a little TLC and support.

As we transition into conversation about keeping emotionally healthy through the daily struggles and when life dishes out hard situations we aim to help eradicate the stigma that asking for help is a weakness.

Ricky Jones is a husband and father of three. He is an accomplished athlete living in Nashville TN, who competes nationally in sports like goalball and bowling. Ricky has completed two full New York Marathons, 5 half Marathons, and tons of smaller runs around the country. In his spare time he likes to participate in beep kickball, tandem cycling, and backyard football with his children. Mr. Jones is the co-Executive Director of STRIVE4You and currently serves as the President of the Board of Directors. He has extensive professional experience in the nonprofit and business sectors. In fact he has over 17 years. This would include entrepreneurship, restaurant management, and nonprofit leadership. The majority of Ricky’s experience is through his amazing work for the past 11 years providing adaptive sports and almost 5 years teaching self-defense to people with disabilities. Currently he works part time as a substitute teacher at the TN school for the Blind and is a accomplished motivation& keynote speaker.

Mr. Jones has an associate’s degree in Business Management, is a graduate of the Council for Developmental Disability’s Partners in Policy Making program, a TN Business Enterprise graduate, and is actively pursuing certification in several key areas from the Center for Nonprofit Management.

With the fast evolution of audio description acceptance (as of March 2021, the ADP lists over 5100 titles!), there still are inconsistencies in quality and excellence - Roy founded Kevin’s way to activate and engage a massively underserved audience and community, with the goal of anchoring audio description to be in parity to sighted audiences - “You’re in good hands.”

Stephanae McCoy created Bold Blind Beauty, to empower women who are blind/low vision to embrace their beauty, increase their confidence, claim their power, and BOLDLY break barriers. As a blind woman who loves style, I’m a lifelong abilities crusader who believes that “Real Beauty Transcends Barriers.”

Paul, as many will remember, worked for Aira for a few years, before recently taking the position for government and community affairs at the American printing house for the blind. he has had the great fortune to have worked on many important pieces of legislation and policy issues, ranging from the Americans with disabilities act to the individuals with disabilities education act rehabilitation act and the communications and video accessibility act. Collaboration and consensusbuilding have been at the center of his work, as guiding principles. at heart, Paul tries to be an advocate and a connecter.

Jason Stark has been with the National Association of the Deaf (NAD)

since 1991. Prior to serving as Director for the last ten years, his job duties at Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) focused on IT and distribution management. His experiences have included the administration of staff in 58 media libraries across the United States and was responsible for direction of computer and Internet operations resulting in national first-ever advancements in accessible media creation, delivery and retrieval. He designed and coded the very first project website, which grew to become the current Internet-based media cataloging, classifying, and scheduling system to meet the needs of students with a sensory disability, their families, and the professionals who work with them.

Over the past ten years, under his guidance as Director, the project has seen an increase in usage and higher numbers of new members. New technology developments occurred including the iOS app, AppleTV app, Roku channel, interactive transcripts, and embeddable player integration with Learning Management Systems. New project initiatives were begun, such as direct service to students enabling them to take more control over their own learning both in the classroom and “on the go.” An expanded Learning Center which includes e-Learning training opportunities for teachers and other professionals was implemented as part of a complete website redesign.

In addition to his work with the NAD, he has performed outside consulting for individuals and businesses in areas of general business consulting, technology training, accessibility and media production.

Susan Glass

For 30 years, Susan Glass taught English Composition, Creative Writing, and literature, first at San Jose State University, and then at West Valley Community College. Blind since birth, Susan says that her sister Jo Lynn and her mother were her first audio describers. She's been a member of ACB since 2006, and an active fan and promoter of audio description since 2010. She and her husband John Glass live in Saratoga California with Susan's 5 year old yellow lab guide dog Omni. Both John and Susan serve on the Board of Directors for the Vista Center For The Blind and Visually Impaired in Palo Alto CA

Susan and Carl are two well-known members and advocates in the American Council of the blind. Working tirelessly in the audio description realm they bring your knowledge and expertise to Sunday edition this week in the hopes of advancing the two award programs as well as answer all of our audio description questions.

Young People Who Are Blind Write Reviews of Film and Video

The American Council of the Blind's Audio Description Project (ACB-ADP) and the Described and Captioned Media Program (DCMP) are continuing their co-sponsorship of an exciting opportunity for blind and visually impaired young people, in four categories from ages 7 to 21: the Benefits of Audio Description in Education (BADIE) contest.

Kids love movies! Movies, videos, and other forms of multimedia are, these days, integral to public, private, and special education curriculum. If you're a young person who can't see or can't see well, audio description provides access to all the visual images of the movies that sighted young people enjoy.

Students choose an audio-described film or video from the more than 8000 titles available through DCMP - visit www.dcmp.org. Or a young person who is blind can borrow an audio-described video or film from a library, and dozens of audio-described films videos are available for purchase through the ACB-ADP's website at www.acb.org/adp/dvds.html.

Low vision and slow vision loss are supported well in our community, born blind services are in place to allow for the maximum life skills and education but those of us who loose vision suddenly find services lacking. Recently I had the pleasure of talking with Tyson Ernst and I have asked him to join me this Sunday to begin this series of conversations starting this week with the need to grieve the loss and the best ways to tweak the services available to move forward with confidence and skill.

I have asked friends who have lived sudden vision loss to call in to discuss their experiences as well as start a dialogue on how we can advocate for change in the existing service models to take into account those of us who have lived full and productive lives while sighted and how to maximize the programs out there meant to help with what is a devastating loss.

Alice Turner serves as Director of Community and Corporate Relations at Vista Center for the Blind and Visually Impaired, headquartered in Palo Alto, CA. As a member of the Leadership Team there, Alice has a multi-layered role, where she interfaces with the community at large, to include clients, service delivery partners, health care providers, industry associations, civic clubs, and technology partners.

After her own vision loss, Alice came to Vista Center as an accomplished corporate professional, Due to the services she received at that time, which enabled her to continue her career as the Training and Development Manager for a large corporation in the Bay Area, she decided to accept an offer of employment, which has resulted in significant growth in corporate and volunteer relationships for the organization. Alice is active in state and national consumer organizations for the blind, and leads a statewide affiliate for guide dog handlers.

True to her personal belief that vision loss need not be a barrier to a full and independent life, Alice has joined her passion and commitment to exemplary community service with her gift as a speaker, which has resulted in being a sought after presenter for Silicon Valley companies and numerous state and national consumer organizations.

Ms. Turner’s personal mission is aligned with Vista Center’s mission. She is a well-known advocate and user of the many tools and technologies typically used by the Blind and Low-Vision Community.

Episode Notes November 2017, life changed in the most amazing way! I went to Smithtown, Long Island and was matched with my first guide dog. Boaty is a phenomenal Black Lab who is not only my guide but the best thing that has happened in my life. The Guide Dog Foundation who turns 75 this year was the school who gave a shot to a guy who had less than 2 years independent mobility but who’s very life hinged on a successful match. Fast forward these 3 years and I have such appreciation for the school that helped me really grab life and pull myself back to a life that is full and productive. I have tremendous respect for the process and all of the schools and thousands of people who work so hard to make these programs successful. This week I want to deep dive into the first 2 years of a guide dog life!!

Eric and Holly have raised 4 amazing dogs starting with Boaty. When I stepped onto the campus in Long Island I could never have imagined that I would become a member of another amazing family. Join Sunday Edition as we welcome Eric, Holly and Nancy.

Nancy is the person Holly and Eric’s second guide went to. She has become a sister of sorts being the human who loves and is in care of one of the dogs Holly and Eric have raised. We are a family unto ourselves and I am happy to welcome them and share their parts of the process. Lauren Berglund graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in Child, Adult, Family Services. She has past experience in higher education disability services and vocational rehabilitation services. Lauren is the Consumer Relations Coordinator at the Guide Dog Foundation and America’s Vetdogs, sister non-profit organizations that place guide and service dogs with veterans, first responders, and individuals who are blind or have other disabilities. The Guide Dog Foundation and America’s Vetdogs were the first assistance dog programs in the United States to be dually accredited by the International Guide Dog Federation and Assistance Dogs International.

Through her position Lauren empowers program graduates and applicants through a combination of strong multi-channel direct phone support and referral services, creation of high value and informative content, and engaging in strategic public outreach and education efforts to key stakeholder originations.

Douglas Wiggin is the Field Rep for the Guide Dog Foundation. The area he primarily works is the New England area, as well as Florida, Mississippi, and Part of Canada. He has been with the Foundation for 31 years. He has lived in Maine for almost 14 years now. He was a resident instructor for about 16 years and now a field rep for about 15 years. As a Field Rep parts of his are Interviews, aftercare, home placements, residential placements, agency visits, and re certification of our Vet dogs.

So we will spend the first hour of Sunday Edition going thru the life of a Guide Dog from birth to the successful matching and growing as a team.

Then I speak to Donna Brown who is a dynamic Board Member and a wonderful ACB advocate and friend. We will get to know her and her journey to the Board.

Lastly Leslie Spoone will preview the Holiday Auction, enticing with some of the goodies on the auction block and her work making yoga available to our members virtually.

A few of you have reached out to me for a link to last weeks Sunday Edition. With all the election drama and fatigue it is very understandable that many missed a show I am so PROUD of. Janet and Terry are so much fun and being able to get to know them as a couple was such a treat.

Jeff and Carrie have a loving and fun energy… Then Tim and Cheryl share their stories with such flair.

John joins me to talk about BITS and tell us a little about his life, career and ACB journey. A fascinating conversationalist I think we will have lots to talk about.

This week we celebrate the success of the Penn state Convention. President Christine Hunsinger and her team will be on hand to tell us all about the planning process and pulling it all off! Tom Burgunder headed the conference Planning and Program Team checking back to be sure that we all did what we were expected to do and keeping up with contacts outside of PCB. He also kept pushing us to get those exhibit hall venders set up to inform us and sell products when the conference was not using Live Event.

Mary Ann Grignon, who is our Firsst Vice President, heads the fund raising team, and is instrumental in the activities of the peer engagement team. Her team worked out the details on the auction. The peer engagement team did public speaking workshops and had a first timer event which we hoped would encourage people who had not been so familiar with what we do to become active in the organization. Sue Lichtenfels, our immediate Past President, had so many good ideas for the conference and found so many presenters that the conference would have been a lot shorter without that work. She also organized the documents that we sent out to all who signed up, and she kept that technical schedule up to date so we knew who had to be contacted and when. Sue also came up with after conference entertainment for each evening that was just so much fun.

Last but not least, Doug Hunsinger, my husband, worked tirelessly to create a professional sounding product for ACB Radio to air.

Then as most of you have seen on the lists New York has had a breakthrough in the advocacy surrounding Accessible Pedestrian Signals. This past week a judge ruled and LORI and Torry will tell us all about the decision and the years of advocacy leading up to it.

ACB has so many small teams that we never really know about working behind the scenes and the DYNAMIC Duo of Clark and Jo Lynn is one of them. They are joining us this Sunday to talk all things National Parks, Getting out and getting moving and of course we have to talk a little about voting. There will be time for a few questions. They are fun and incredibly hard working and when they are working together their projects shine!!

National Coming Out Day recognizes the individual journeys part of the LGBTQ community. What better way to recognize the pride and how far the journey has taken us then by talking with Blind Pride International members and allies. BPI turned 20 this year, and members join Sunday Edition to talk about why it is important to remember the strides so many before us have taken to make the world a safe and accepting place. We will also talk about the importance of being able to COME out and live proudly.

Halloween closes out the month of October, but the month opens up celebrating the beauty, diversity, and richness of Hispanic Culture. After a well-respected IRC Luncheon presentation and the beautiful ACB-Voices article celebrating Hispanic Heritage, Gabriel Lopez Kafati brings members of that wonderful panel we met at convention, as well as other proud Hispanic friends in a roundtable celebratory conversation. Gabriel and friends will share the unique aspects of being blind or visually impaired persons living in the US. Last week seems at times to be ripped from a bad political thriller but the credits never roll. Sunday Edition always strives to bring ACB conversations that enrich our advocacy and education, and that cover all matters that affect our community. This week I have reached out to a very informed subject-matter expert, as well as two of our own esteemed members to discuss RBG and her accomplishments, the court past, present and future including court stacking and the possibility the court will have to determine another Presidential election. We will discuss the Nomination of the seat RBG left vacant. By the time Sunday Edition airs, President Trump will have announced his pick.

Just four short (or agonizing) years ago Republicans deemed it unconscionable to allow sitting president to nominate during a election year and yet they seem determined to move forward no matter how hypocritical it looks. Possible ramifications to Roe/Wade, protections for aging and disabled persons, and LGBT rights that have been earned

The Notorious (and I believe GLORIOUS) RBG, AKA Ruth Bater Ginsburg fought tirelessly for over 50 years for the equality of all citizens focusing on the rights of women and marginalized communities. Appointed by President Clinton her presence on the Court has left historic advances for All Genders Her strategic cases in the 1970s opened the door for not only women but for disabled and LGBTQ issues to advance to equality. thanks to the tireless work of RBG issues our community has advocated for were recognized and held to the standards of all being created (and acted in action) treated EQUAL.

Steve Mendelsohn, President of AAVIA, scholar and author, and Chris Prentice will join me to discuss all this and answer questions from member call-in. Additionally I am so pleased to welcome Professor Kim Ford-Mazru director of the law program at UVA.

Kim Forde-Mazrui joined the law faculty of the University of Virginia in 1996, and was promoted to full professor in 2001. He teaches Constitutional Law, Employment Discrimination, Criminal Law, and Race and Law. His scholarship focuses on equal protection, especially involving race and sexual orientation. His publications have considered what role race should play in placing children for adoption; whether and how to select racially and other demographically diverse juries; whether affirmative action policies that employ race-neutral means are constitutional; whether America is morally obligated to remedy past discrimination; and whether racial profiling and other discriminatory practices by law enforcement are adequately deterred by current constitutional doctrines. His scholarship has also examined the parallels between historical arguments against interracial relationships and contemporary arguments against same-sex relationships, as well as the role of tradition as a justification for banning same-sex marriage. His articles have been published in several prestigious law journals, including the University of Chicago Law Review, the California Law Review, the Michigan Law Review, Vanderbilt Law Review, and the Georgetown Law Journal. The hallmark of Forde-Mazrui's approach is to take seriously the conflicting perspectives on controversial issues, and to offer constructive proposals to move society beyond current, often intractable, debates.

Joining me this Sunday;

Roy Samuelson: After his dynamic and engrossing ACB banquet key note address and several BPI and ADP secessions Roy has agreed to bring his knowledge and passion for Audio-Description to our show. He will talk Kevins Process and his passion for advocating with our community for the quality of programming we deserbe.

Chris Snyder is a totally blind description quality expert, VO artist and award-winning audio engineer. He has produced thousands of hours of audio description for television and film over the past eighteen years. You can hear his voice on such shows and movies as Modern Family, The Middle, Fresh off the Boat, Speechless, The Goldbergs, The Expanse, Ever After High, Monster High movies, Latte and the Magic Water Stone, Snow Time and Hot Bot. He also produced several audio dramas including work for Darker Projects and the Colonial Radio Theater. He is a strong proponent of the hiring of blind people at all levels of the audio description industry.

Miriam Snyder has been a description writer for several years. She has written description for The Goldbergs, Fresh off the Boat, Speechless, Star Trek Discovery, The Expanse, When Calls the Heart, White Rabbit Project, and many other shows as well as movies and documentaries including Snow Time, The Flintstones, One More Time, and Captains Courageous. She has also written and narrated several episodes of Carpool Karaoke.

DD Snyder is 15 years old, and a new description writer. She has described dance videos for Infinite Flow, an inclusive dance company, and has just completed her first script for an upcoming documentary. She is also a description narrator, and has voiced movies such as My Little Pony: Equestria Girls: The Legend of Everfree, Barbie in Princess Power, Barbie and her Sisters in A Pony Tale, Barney’s Great Adventure, An American Girl: McKenna Shoots for the Stars.

Teri Grossman is a premier description writer and narrator. She has been working in the industry for 20 years. She has described for live theater including Jersey Boys, War Horse, Big River, Phantom of the Opera, Side by Side and Into the Woods. , television and movies including Modern Family, The Middle, Nashville, Making a Murderer, Mind Hunter, Mad Men, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon 2: Sword of Destiny, October Sky, Chasing Coral, and many others. She has also described exhibits including the Blue Man Group, the Aquarium of the Pacific and the Rose Parade.

Micah Grossman is a jack of all trades in the description field. He is a writer, narrator, script quality specialist and an audio engineer. I assembled a few very knowledgeable folks with lots of voting advocacy experience for this round-table. Unfortunately due to some personal circumstances I could not avoid I will be unable to host the show this Sunday. Fret none my friends and listeners for, like the old adage claims:

So Gabriel Lopez Kafati with the knowledgeable and radio friendly Clark Rachfal and Cheryl Cummings will take the helm of Sunday Edition and facilitate this amazing discussion featuring:

Jim Kracht; Member of ACB’s Board of Directors, FCB’s Immediate Past President and life long accessible voting advocate. He will lead us through the successful Florida legal action and share his impressive knowledge and experience on the subject.

Jeff Thom of the California Board and subject matter expert will enlighten us on the resistance of online balloting submissions, his work testing and advocating for voting by mail systems from a unique vantage perspective.

Mike Godino makes a second Sunday Edition appearance to add his knowledge and perspective both from an advocating and implementation stance. Lynne Koral joins us to talk about the landmark Alaska legislation that is a statute in independent voting.

Tony Stevens who returned to ACB with much fanfare and a strong vision for advocacy just weeks before COVID-19 strangled our world as we knew it and helped to harness the energy and spirit of our beloved convention, the success of which we are all still celebrating. His knowledge and radio-suave voice is instantly recognizable and will be an asset to the conversation.

Then, of course, there is Cheryl Cumings who’s velvet smooth voice is well known to ACB Radio listeners and a Bay State Board member and staunch accessible voting advocate will help Gabriel to Helm the round-table discussion.

Clark Rachfal needs no introduction and is also a friend to Sunday Edition and I would like to thank him for readily accepting my last minute plea for his knowledge and passionate perspective.

Gabriel Lopez Kafati; What can I say about this engaging co-host of Pride Connection and the President of BPI?? A naturalized citizen who has regaled us before, is a passionate advocating force in so many arenas and who just days after his swearing in ceremony joined the Leadership mid year meetings and has been a strong and vocal member of ACB and advocating initiatives for well over 10 years. His engaging and intelligent demeanor will be the perfect co-facilitator for this weeks show.

So although I cannot helm a show I was so excited to bring to ACB Radio Mainstream this week I am confident that I have structured a show that will inform as it entertains all of the listeners I have come to love. I will miss the opportunity to talk with all these dynamic folks I am so proud to hand the show in confidence to them all.

First and foremost, let me say thanks for all of the great feedback, compliments and well wishes for the show. I am overwhelmed with the response to the first episode and am very excited to share with you all that, because of the enormous response, we will be going live... Yes, thats LIVE on May 17th. More on that later!

this week’s Sunday Edition is all about CONVENTION! Movers and Shakers features a great conversation with the matriarch of convention, Janet Dickelman; about her road to, love of, and challenges of being the “MOMMA" of our beloved yearly event. We also chat about what life is like when she is not planning, following up, and generally herding Convention into shape!

Then we are joined in the happenings segment by President Spoone for a roundtable discussion featuring the Path to Convention. We address the burning questions we all have as to how this will all be pulled off, and Janet and Dan do not shy away from the hard questions.

Lastly, in our In The Spotlight segment Dan stays to tell us all about his Path to President, his vision and things get personal. Dan gives good talk and it is a conversation not to be missed.

Throughout the show we highlight convention program events and you will hear from a few surprise affiliate voices! I would like to thank the affiliate presidents for their timely and fun submissions. Sunday Edition will feature a live recap and analysis of the event as the show goes live right after the convention on May 17th!! Awesome MOVER and SHAKERS will join me live to discuss what I know will be a success and what that means for the National Path into the Future!! I will also be joined in the second half of the show by Joel Snyder of the audio description project for a fun and information-rich question and answer session.
