Discretionary effort is the gap between what people have to give and what they choose to give. Research consistently shows that most leaders are leaving 20–30% of their team’s capacity on the table — not because of skill shortages, but because of environment.
In this episode, we draw on six of the world’s most influential thinkers on leadership and performance to give you a practical, layered framework for unlocking the effort your team already has inside them.
The question isn’t how to push people harder. It’s how to create the conditions where they choose to give more.
I’ve practised all of these myself, in low-functioning teams, and can personally attest to the spectacular rise that’s possible when you are deliberate about applying them.
The Six-Layer Discretionary Effort Stack
Layer/Thinker: The Question to Ask Yourself
Positivity/Shawn Achor:Am I creating an environment where people feel good?
Clear Direction/Greg McKeown: Do people know exactly what matters most?
Strengths/Dan Sullivan: Is everyone working in their Unique Ability?
Safety/Timothy R. Clark: Can people speak up without fear?
Purpose/Simon Sinek: Do people know why their work matters?
Right People/Jim Collins: Are the right people in the right seats?

Your leadership habits are reshaping your brain right now — for better or worse. Dex breaks down the neuroscience behind five common leadership behaviors that damage brain health.
High performers often normalize habits that steadily erode their sharpness, resilience, leadership presence, and even future cognitive health — while still believing they’re “doing what it takes.”
-How chronic stress shrinks the brain’s decision-making centers
-Why overwork initially improves performance before turning destructive
-The link between leadership stress, cortisol, memory loss, and emotional reactivity
-How sleep deprivation impairs empathy, judgment, and cognitive function
-Why decision fatigue creates brain fog and poor leadership choices
-How harsh self-talk keeps the brain trapped in threat mode
-Practical ways to protect your brain while improving leadership performance
If your brain feels overloaded, foggy, reactive, or permanently “ON,” this episode will explain why — and what to do about it.

AI is making work faster — but it may also be making your thinking weaker.
In this episode, we break down the hidden cognitive cost of AI: how small, everyday reliance is quietly eroding focus, depth, and decision-making in high performers.
At the same time, companies are racing to adopt it, pouring in investment without clear ROI — and no one’s entirely sure what “good” looks like yet. Or if they'll lose their job.
Yet the pressure builds: use it more, move faster… don’t fall behind.
This episode cuts through that noise — and shows you how to use AI without handing over the one thing that actually makes you valuable: your thinking.

Resentment might be the clearest early warning sign of burnout—and most people completely miss it.
In this episode, we break down why resentment shows up, why it sticks around, and how it quietly drains your energy, focus, and performance.
Resentment isn’t weakness. It’s a signal that something feels wrong and you don’t feel able to resolve it.
Left unchecked, it keeps your nervous system on high alert, fuels overthinking, and blocks recovery.
You’ll learn:
This isn’t about suppressing how you feel.
It’s about understanding it—and using it to take your power back.

Listen if you’ve ever wondered why you perform best under pressure, struggle with consistency, or feel like your focus doesn’t always match your ambition.
In this episode, Dex explores a common but often unspoken pattern among high-performing leaders — traits associated with ADHD — and how they show up in leadership, performance, and burnout.
This is not about diagnosis. It’s about recognising a leadership operating style, understanding its strengths, and learning how to work with it more effectively.

Energy management is leadership performance. Precision matters more than intensity.

What will leadership actually look like in 2026?
Technology is accelerating everything, but the leaders who win won’t simply be the most technical or the fastest decision-makers. They’ll be the ones who know how to lead people well in an environment of constant change.
In this episode, Dex Randall breaks down five leadership traits that separate high-performing leaders from the rest: human-centred performance, AI fluency, disciplined focus, decisiveness under pressure, and the ability to create purpose and meaning for teams.
Because while AI may scale systems, great leadership still scales people—and trust can’t be automated.

Dex Randall explains how chronic stress keeps the body in survival mode through ongoing cortisol activation, damaging brain function, health, and longevity even when you feel “fine” today.
He contrasts normal stress (fight/flight followed by reset) with chronic stress (no reset).
Over the long term, stress dysregulates the nervous system, increases inflammation, accelerates aging, and is linked to diseases including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, depression, and neurodegeneration.
He outlines strategies to re-regulate the nervous system at work (boundaries, priorities, stopping after hours) and at home (morning daylight, movement, eating early, delaying caffeine, slow breathing, social connection, “no emotional escape,” and vagus-nerve box breathing.)

Quick announcement for loyal listeners: after publishing every week since September 2021, I’m shifting the podcast’s cadence. Going forward, episodes will drop only when there’s something genuinely impactful and possibly contrarian to share. Fewer episodes, higher signal — same commitment to depth.

If you’re here for in-depth leadership analysis, understanding stress patterns, or creating real career and personal change, nothing changes — the bar just went up.

Goals wobble. Energy drops. And that familiar voice shows up: “I should be further along by now.”

Every leader has blind spots. Not because they’re careless or incompetent — but because they’re human.
In this episode, Dex shares a formative leadership mistake from early in his career and uses it to unpack how beliefs, biases, and unexamined assumptions quietly shape leadership decisions. Often at a cost.
You’ll explore why blind spots exist, how they show up under pressure, and the practical signals that tell you when one is running the show. Dex also explains why self-awareness alone isn’t enough — and how coaching (human and AI) can help you see what you literally cannot see on your own.
This is about leadership maturity, not self-criticism.

If you’re back at work and already quietly overloaded — you’re not broken.
January often pretends everything resets, while your nervous system, responsibilities, and expectations clearly don’t.
In this episode, Dex explores why high-performing leaders don’t need new goals, more effort, or a “new you” — they need a new standard.
Drawing on Dan Sullivan’s concepts of The Gap and The Gain and 10x thinking, this episode reframes overwhelm, pressure, and ambition — and shows how leadership energy is restored by raising standards, not expectations.

Summary
In this episode, we break the spell of the “lone wolf” identity — the myth that high performers must grind alone, stay stoic, and win through self-sacrifice. We explore why this model silently burns people out, why it’s collapsing as a leadership archetype, and what replaces it: inner partnership, genuine support, and a way of working that restores energy instead of draining it.
What We Cover
– How the lone-wolf philosophy sneaks into high-stakes careers
– The quiet suffering that looks like competence from the outside
– Why burnout isn’t weakness — it’s a loyalty problem (too loyal to the wrong rules)
– The emotional toll of being “the one who always holds it together”
– The cultural lie that self-reliance is noble
– How isolation becomes self-attack
– The moment a leader realises they’re exhausted because they’ve been the strong one
– What replacing the lone-wolf identity actually looks like
– How inner solidarity becomes fuel, power, and clarity
– Practical questions to shift from isolation to support
Key Takeaway
Burnout thrives where connection dies.
The lone wolf doesn’t fall because he's weak — he falls because he’s alone.
Real strength comes from restoring partnership: with yourself, with others, and with the life you actually want to lead.
Try This
– Ask yourself: “Where am I still trying to do everything alone?” (Ask Dex AI to help you solve it)
– Identify one area where support is overdue.
– Let one person in.
– Notice how your system settles when you stop carrying everything solo.

In this conversation, we go straight into the territory most professionals tiptoe around: intuition, subtle energy, the “inner signals” you’ve been trained to ignore since childhood.
I talk about why Western culture is so committed to denial, how that denial fuels burnout, and why your quiet inner nudges are often the most honest, helpful guidance you’ll ever get.
We cover everything from witches and shamans, to Victorian emotional repression, to the modern addiction cycle… and yes, the moments in my own life when intuition slammed into me like a freight train.
This isn’t about superstition—it’s about reconnection. Tuning back in to yourself, to others, and to the deeper stream of intelligence running through all of us.
If you’ve been feeling disconnected, numb, over-stimulated, secretly exhausted, or like you’re living 10cm to the left of your actual life… this one’s for you.

When burnout hits, most people think they’re simply tired. But underneath the exhaustion, there’s often a deeper driver: shame — that quiet voice that says, “You’re failing. You should be stronger.”
In this episode, Dex unpacks how shame silently fuels isolation and self-abandonment in high performers, and what it really takes to break that destructive cycle.
Through the story of “Mark,” a high-achieving executive who spiralled into withdrawal and disconnection, Dex reveals the hidden mechanisms of shame and how they erode confidence, relationships, and health — all while convincing us to “work harder.”
You’ll learn practical, immediately usable steps to reclaim self-trust and reconnect with your power — even in the middle of burnout.
What You’ll Learn
Key Quote
“Shame isn’t proof that you’re broken. It’s proof that you care deeply about how you show up. Burnout recovery begins not when you fix yourself, but when you stop abandoning yourself.”

In this episode, Dex unpacks how early conditioning shapes what we see as “truth,” and how those truths quietly drive our adult stress, dissatisfaction, and burnout. You’ll hear how our sense of being “not good enough” often began as a misguided attempt to stay loved and safe—and how that same belief now keeps us disconnected from joy and ease.
Dex shares a personal story about a moment of beauty that felt strangely unsatisfying—and how that revealed a buried old belief still running the show. He explores how to unlearn those inherited “truths,” and why the road back to peace and performance begins with something very simple: unconditional self-approval.
You’ll Learn:
Quote from the Episode:
“Not good enough was never the truth—about me, or about you.”

Most leaders think they’re holding it all together under duress. But often what they’re really doing is gripping the steering wheel of a car that’s already crashed.
Control feels powerful, but it’s actually a symptom of fear. When fear runs the show, we end up managing people instead of leading them, and circumstances instead of ourselves. We seek approval and safety in all the wrong places, forgetting that real leadership begins inside us.
In this episode, Dex unpacks why our craving for control is so strong, how it quietly fuels burnout, and what leadership looks like when we stop trying to control the wrong thing.
You’ll learn:
Dex shares stories from his early leadership days, lessons learned from high-achieving professionals, and practical ways to reclaim your energy and influence without resorting to control.
If you’ve been exhausted from trying to hold everything together, this episode will help you reclaim your power and start leading in a way that actually works — for you, your team, and your career.

In this episode, Finding New Hope, Dex explores how professionals can rediscover hope and purpose after burnout. Drawing inspiration from Viktor Frankl’s Man’s Search for Meaning, Dex shows how meaning and purpose are not luxuries—they’re essential for resilience, recovery, and fulfillment.
He examines why burnout so often erodes hope, how chronic stress distorts our perception of self-worth, and what it takes to reclaim your power and confidence when you’ve run dry. Through visualization, reflection, and self-compassion, Dex invites you to reconnect with your authentic, capable self—the one who still believes in your own future.
This episode is an antidote to despair, and a call to rise—stronger, wiser, and more human than before.

In July 2017, I had a heart attack brought on by stress and burnout. Six months later, just as I was getting back on my feet, I was hit by a car. I spent three months in hospital with broken bones, unable to move, and doing hundreds of rehab reps from a hospital bed.

In this episode, Dex introduces systems thinking as a powerful tool for breaking burnout loops. Rather than blaming ourselves for exhaustion, Dex explains how unseen patterns — feedback loops, delays, and misguided leverage — quietly reinforce overwork, perfectionism, and stress.

Worry can feel like a necessary part of success—but it’s more often a habit that drains your energy, confidence, and focus. In this episode, we explore two ways to cut worry down to size quickly.
First, we’ll look at a science-based 4-step protocol from Dr. Steve Bierman’s book The End of Worry, which helps dissolve worry as a reflex. Then, we’ll compare it to a coaching-based approach I use with clients in burnout—rooted in cognitive behavioural techniques and emotional leadership.
You’ll hear a real-world example of both methods in action, and learn how each approach helps disarm negative thinking and restore clarity—without toxic positivity or endless self-talk.

In this episode, I unpack some of the core ideas from The Subtle Art of Not Giving a Fk by Mark Manson — and how they relate (or don’t) to burnout recovery. You’ll hear my take on:
This isn’t about blaming yourself. It’s about choosing what really matters — so you can stop the self-abandonment cycle and start living with purpose again.

In this episode, we take a bold look at adversity—not as the thing that breaks you, but as the exact furnace that forges your next level of leadership, clarity, and power.
If you’re a senior professional facing burnout, overwhelm, or high-stakes pressure, this conversation is for you.
We explore:
You’ll also hear real client stories—like Dan’s, a high-level operator who went from hopeless and trapped to fully re-energized and reconnected to his power. Not by escaping adversity, but by meeting it with a whole new mindset.
Burnout doesn’t mean you're broken. It might mean you’re being invited to lead differently—from deeper presence, truth, and self-respect.
✨ This is transformation, not just survival.

What if burnout isn’t a breakdown… but a breakthrough?
In this episode, we explore how quantum principles—like energy, vibration, the observer effect, and non-locality—can be powerful tools for healing burnout at its roots. If you’re open to a more expansive, interconnected view of reality, this conversation may change everything.
We dive into:
You don’t need to "try harder" to recover. You need a new way of seeing. One that reconnects you to yourself, your purpose, and the vast creative energy available when you stop resisting and start allowing.
✨ This is burnout recovery on a whole new frequency.

Is self-discipline the cure for burnout—or part of the problem?
If you’ve ever told yourself, “I just need to get my act together,” or felt ashamed for not being able to power through exhaustion, this episode is for you.
We unpack one of the most damaging myths around burnout: that you can fix it by trying harder. For high-performing professionals, this trap is especially dangerous. The very trait that’s propelled you forward—relentless self-discipline—can become the force that drives you to collapse.
In this honest and compassionate conversation, you’ll learn:
-Why self-discipline often becomes toxic in burnout.
-The emotional cocktail behind “just push through” (shame, fear, guilt…).
-How to reframe discipline as self-loyalty and protection, not punishment.
-The difference between surviving and thriving in your career.
-What it really takes to recover—without stepping away from your job.
-Plus: a powerful story of Dex’s own burnout and the turning point that changed everything.
✨ Burnout recovery isn’t about being harder on yourself—it’s about finally learning to stand with yourself.

In the depths of our exhaustion in burnout, we often turn our frustration on ourselves, and on others. Unfortunately, this escalates OUR suffering.
Learn a better way: giving yourself the gift of releasing judgment. This will free up a lot of good energy in you, that you really need to thrive.
It's not our job to police every other human.
We're much better if we can return to our good hearts, love ourselves, and make a little room for other people too, with all their different ways.

Times are tough in this world of ours. The environment has challenges our ancestors did not have to face. There are many apparent global threats to our wellbeing.
Yet recently, voices of research on the human health crisis have become more prominent, finally reaching the US senate in September. I think this is good news!
But let's take this personal, and look for a moment at potential impacts on your own health associated with burnout, and what corrective action you can take.

Humans have many inner mechanisms that try to save our butts when we're going off track. They can attract our attention in painful ways, though, and that's inconvenient, to say the least.
But if you know how to decode their messages - impulses that spring up in your mind, body pain, self-criticism and off-key behaviors - you can heal the cause of the problems. Then your burnout will magically melt away.
So this episode is about dealing skillfully with those irritating inner voices!

Compassion is a gift of gentle care that we can offer to ourselves in burnout. When we learn to do this - offer ourselves support in our suffering - it revives our spirits.
Listen for the path to compassion, even when you feel down on yourself and are not seeing yourself as worthy.

One of burnout's devastating effects is to diminish our confidence in ourselves, through constant self-criticism and self-diminishment.
When we experience this low self-esteem, we sense a loss of control and our need to be right increases proportionately. Sadly, the way this plays out is often to make us look even less competent in front of our colleagues.
Listen in for an easier, better way to re-assert yourself.

There's something about burnout that grinds us down to a stump, until we have lost energy and hope, and almost stop trying to fix anything. Motivation hits an all-time low. We're missing deadlines right and left.
Unfortunately, burnout thrives in this paralysis. To free up energy to make change, we might need a bit of help - from someone who believes in us. I can be that person for you, and I can show you how to return to full capacity and performance at work.

If you're flat out disappointed most of the time in burnout, the good news is that this is avoidable.
It's within your control to change your experience, because it's your expectations that sow the seeds of disappointment. And many of your expectations are actually redundant - they don't make your life better.
Reducing your need for the world to make your life good is a powerful stand to take, and when you offer yourself optimal love, safety, approval and care, that prize is yours! Here's how.

Becoming your strongest ally is a choice.
Many people have not been taught the kind of self-belief that will protect them from burnout for life. Perhaps that's why you're here?
I can teach you. Self-belief is a CHOICE, and we can LEARN how to do it. This, more than any other choice we might make, is the gift that keeps on giving and it's never too late.
I can't recommend it highly enough to change the flavour of your daily existence, for the better.

It can be oh-so-tempting to blame others for our burnout blues. Usually, we won't win that fight, and the cost will be more than we can bear, and our despair will increase.
Whether others blame us, or we blame others, we might instead extract ourselves from the battle and soothe our bruised souls. Here's how.

What you need to know about codependence and its detrimental effects on relationships.
Codependent behaviors stem from fear of rejection and a commensurate need for approval and control, leading to dysfunctional relationship dynamics that impact self-esteem, emotional maturity and connection.
It's possible to overcome such behaviors through creating internal safety, learning skills such as effective communication, and setting boundaries. Listen for practical advice and exercises and develop self-awareness to move towards healthier, more fulfilling relationships.

Let's explore how extreme ownership can help you bounce back from burnout and boost your leadership skills. It's so powerful to own your actions, performance and mistakes, instead of overcommitting or trying to please everyone, or passing the buck.
Understanding the pressures others face can really help with better communication and teamwork, creating a more supportive work environment. Hear insights from "Extreme Ownership" by Jocko Willink and Leif Babin, and "Essentialism" by Greg McKeown, who share tips on effective leadership and self-improvement. Childhood gave us rules for survival that worked well then, but can be counter-productive in adulthood. At work, our unresolved childhood fears pop up at random and trigger the amygdala, freezing our adult brain. We cannot (in the moment) solve a fear that happened decades ago.
However, coaching is particularly successful in unburdening us of the childhood fears of rejection, abandonment and disapproval. Then we can solve work problems using our adult brain.
When we do this, anxiety, stress, frustration, resentment and overwhelm reduce.
We can return smoothly to the helm of our professional life.

Burnout shuts us down big time, cramming us up inside with our negative emotions. We become automatons, plodding through our day, trying to satisfy others, forgetting about things we like to do.
What we discard on the way is our authenticity, leaving a dull empty ache. In this episode I invite you to a better place, where being you is the BEST thing to be. Burnout Recovery celebrates the you-ness of you so you can spring back to life.

Special guest and fellow burnout recovery coach Eugene Lee talks about how he burned out at 27yo. I love this story because it represents young professionals who are burning out at ever increasing rates and very many are not receiving the support they need. I work with young men in college or recently graduated, because it's vital for them to make a strong start in their careers, through developing confidence in themselves as they learn and grow. Students of all ages are our future, and we need to be there for them.
N.B. Burnout can happen at any age!

Belonging is a gnarly topic to raise with anyone in burnout, who is caught between wanting to be seen as a high-performer, and guiltily slinking away, feeling like a failure.
Belonging is widely misunderstood. We think it's conferred upon us by others. That's a limited view, because if we fail to offer ourselves belonging, we can't receive it when it's offered by others.
The more harshly we judge ourselves, the less belonging we feel inside, and the more we behave like outsiders to 'prove' we don't belong. A vicious cycle.
Belonging is 'inclusion safety' - the first stage of psychological safety. It's a basic human need. Denied, we cannot possibly thrive.
Burnout recovery is about increasing belonging, worthiness, thriving and all the good we can absorb of human warmth and endeavour.

Most people can't recover from burnout alone - because what got them into burnout will not get them out.
It takes a mentor - but asking for help rarely comes naturally to those in burnout.
Worse, many find it hard to receive the goodness of such help. Imposter Syndrome and feeling unworthy get in the way, along with the burning desire they have to fix their own problems.
Let's talk about that and dispel a few myths.
No man is an island.
You're a good person in suffering and off course, not a bad person.
You deserve to enjoy your one human life!

If you're struggling to deal with moral outrage or moral injury at work, and it's contributing to burnout for you, here are some ways you can heal your suffering.
Don't stay in suffering, take action because you DO have some measure of control.
When we accept the status quo, and change seems impossible, there is a new way to understand our dilemma that opens doors.

Are you stuck in burnout or career growth?
Let's talk about breaking free from stuckness and overcoming burnout. The origins of stuckness lie in our self-belief and fears, and burnout symptoms prevent us seeing past them. This is the cycle of exhaustion and frustration, and the behaviors that perpetuate it, including busywork and self-doubt.
Recovery of greatness comes from acts of self-kindness, goal-setting, and redefining success, as well as addressing the impact of childhood experiences on self-perception.
I teach self-support, making peace with failure, and seeking personal approval over external validation. Here is genuine possibility for a joyous life and successful recovery from burnout.

Our human bodies are designed to heal, but under a constant burden of high stress, not enough sleep, poor diet, lack of exercise, less than nourishing social connections and willful self-neglect, thriving is not always possible.
At the peak of burnout, our bodies lose tone, vitality and resilience. Many new clients come to me with signs of bodily wear and tear as a result, e.g. inflammatory conditions, chronic pain, migraines, insomnia, high blood pressure, weight and gut issues and so on. In my case, it was a heart attack.
Listen to this episode for restorative tips, and if you feel your health is impacted by stress, please TAKE ACTION.
Burnout recovery improves health. Many chronic conditions can be relieved simply by restoring vitality, mood and connection, as we abandon our crippling stress habits and tend to our mind, body and soul.

It can be tough(!) to pause for self-care when burnt out, but those essential pauses can be transformative. I've learned that the act of being kind to oneself is not a luxury; it's a necessity - our souls die without it. Don't they?
Do you wish people would support you more?
Are you being a bit TOO tough on yourself?
As remote an idea as it may seem to you now: What do you think would happen if you DID practice self-kindness amidst life's pressures?
Let's explore how to rescue your starving soul and restore the wellbeing you truly want and deserve, which will strongly support your burnout recovery. The days of being harsh to yourself may well be over! And not a moment too soon! If harshness worked, you'd already know.

Are your feeling burned out and stuck because of learned helplessness? It can happen to anyone!
In a burnout context, Learned Helplessness can simply be an old pattern of thinking amenable to gentle self-supporting change. e.g. for me, around academic success.
Overcoming it will help you regain control of your life. Becoming curious about where and why you feel helpless can help you see through its false ideas and find ways to support yourself, become stronger, and feel better overall.
N.B. If your experience is trauma-related, please instead seek medical/therapeutic help.

One of the most common indicators of burnout is feeling disrespected.
We tend to feel unacknowledged, under-valued, unsupported and used. Which we naturally don't appreciate when we're also giving our all as highly skilled and over-worked professionals.
So, this week here are my top 4 tips to handle the oversized emotional trigger of feeling disrespected and put yourself back in the driver's seat.
Learn how to maintain control over your internal reactions, reframe the situation to your advantage, practice self-acceptance, feel your emotions fully, and depersonalize the incident/s.

Feeling undervalued and overwhelmed in your professional life?
As someone who has navigated the murky waters of burnout, I've learned that self-advocacy isn't just about speaking up—it's about recognizing your worth. Let's talk about why asserting your needs can reignite passion in your work and how it's a game-changer for your emotional well-being.
Many of us have been conditioned to believe we shouldn't make waves or demand better for ourselves, but I've learned that self-worth is non-negotiable.

We humans spend much of our time lying outrageously to ourselves about ourselves and our own capabilities, twisting the data to match our beliefs.
Which would be fine, except in burnout, when our beliefs suck. Specifically, we see limitations where none exist.
Let's take a fresh look, and open up an exciting new world of possibility simply by changing our perceptions.

I would (pre-burnout) have loved to be invincible. Sadly, I was shaking at the knees with raw vulnerability instead. Invincible would have been SO convenient and face-saving.
Many of us disposed to burnout secretly give invincibility a try, even knowing it's a dud. Its apparent protective quality is so seductive.
Unfortunately, it's just part of the path to burnout, as eventually a thing will happen that causes us to fall apart anyway.
If you secretly still aspire to invincibility, allow me to offer a better way.
Your strength and efficacy WILL return after burnout, but in a new, easier and even more successful form.

Sensitivity and hypersensitivity are common for people experiencing burnout.
In fact, these days, they're just common for people!
If you feel overly sensitive when you are under duress, anxious and living on adrenaline - that makes sense, doesn't it? But don't worry, this will change through burnout recovery, as you build greater energy and resilience, lose your current pessimism and calm your nervous system.
Effectively, what happens is you rediscover your sense of humour and ease, develop greater rapport with others and enjoy collaboration and mutual endeavours so much more. Life becomes a game instead of a pain.

You may find that under chronic stress your brain goes a bit wonky and starts feeding you suboptimal thoughts about life. That could be due to fatigue, distraction, overwhelm...etc.
Remember that your thoughts at such moments are not facts - false beliefs, exhaustion and memories can muddle your thinking - but you CAN find your way back to more helpful states.
This was Dex's experience during his own burnout - overtiredness causing scrambled thoughts. You are not broken - any labels you associate with 'the scramble', such as ADHD, anxiety, imposter, burnout do not define you. Everything is temporary and workable.
But if you are in burnout, with an exhausted and overcooked brain and body, is it time to give yourself the gift of recovery?
I KNOW there's a ton of good left in you, waiting to be revived.

Towards year end is the perfect time to plan for next year. What do you want more of? Less of? What would a perfect year look like?
Because if we set a direct course, we're infinitely more likely to be gratified than if we dwell in fear and doubt, not daring to set any firm goal.
Silently backburnering your year before it even starts is a mark of the defeat and hopelessness that come with burnout. Don't yield to that!
Failure to thrive is NOT your destiny.
Whatever you truly want next year, let me fight for it with you.
My coaching clients thrive.
Part one of my coaching program is the revival - systematically coming out of burnout.
Part two is spectacular and exciting career growth. Being who and how you want to be, fulfilling your potential in joyful ways.

One of the least fun(!) parts of burnout can be how it affects our financial security - perhaps because we're not selling, earning, saving, or spending in our most rational and effective way. Or because we're suspended from work, off sick or between jobs. Or simply because the economy has turned down and we're feeling the pinch.
Not everyone in burnout has financial problems - but if you do, it can have a profound effect on morale and resilience. So in this episode we'll explore what can be done - we CAN usually right ourselves and set ourselves on a better track.
In particular, the professional coaching program I run is oriented towards creating the best possible financial future. Coaching needs to be R.O.I. positive, right?
Even for those in a tight spot, when you recover from burnout, you will go on to create a better financial position.

The first step in burnout recovery is being clear about what problem you're trying to solve. Then step 2 is finding an effective cure.
Many people come to me with what they THINK might be burnout, because my speciality is executive and professional burnout.
They tend to have four main questions for me:
Is this burnout? If so, why am I in it? Why have I been unable to fix it?
And when they hear that there IS a solution, the next question is - Will the solution work for ME?
I hope to give you a deeper understanding, and perhaps a new perspective, as I answer all of those questions in this episode.
Rest assured, if you are a professional in burnout, not only is there a solution, but even though nothing has worked to fix it so far, burnout coaching WILL work for you.

It's understandable in our modern culture AND it can be a hard spot to bounce back from.

In burnout, we are typically over-run with all kinds of negative emotions, that wear us down, reduce our effectiveness at work and impact our mood and energy. Once we're very tired, this experience can become the norm and our defence against it is often to shut down our painful feelings, so we can get through our day.
Sadly, we cannot selectively shut down our emotions. When we try, we also block our positive emotions. In chronic anxiety or burnout, you may be familiar with this.
The key to moving forward is allowing our emotions back in. We're human, there really isn't any other choice. So, in this episode, you will learn how to gently do that, so you can start living a full life again. Feeling our feelings is one of the essential tools of burnout recovery and allows us to redress the balance and feel positive emotions once again.

In these anxiety-ridden times, we need to talk about safety, and how to create a sense of safety inside ourselves that allows us to open up to this full human experience without being overwhelmed.
The unfortunate truth is, some people don't feel comfortable having an experience of safety. It may trigger nervous system alarm and hyper-sensitivity to threat and can form part of a burnout experience.
If "safety" is sensed as unsafe, we will naturally shutdown or withdraw, but also the fight-or-flight response can become entrenched and reduce our capacity for normal function, cognition, social connection and rest.
A big part of burnout recovery is creating a genuinely felt internal sense of safety, which is a skill that we can learn.

Controlling the Narrative is often touted as a desirable outcome.
But is it?
Certainly, when we're experiencing burnout, it has some appeal! We hope - usually in vain - that others will overlook our sketchy performance, surliness and teamwork fails. Perhaps they will give us the benefit of the doubt?
In this episode, let's explore the dynamics of controlling the narrative and consider what the alternatives might be. I can recommend a much less stressful way to create a sense of safety - one that does not rely on the co-operation of others.

Since quitting her own job as a lawyer, Goli Kalkhoran has transitioned to coaching and now hosts the "Lessons from a Quitter" podcast. She helps de-stigmatize quitting and coaches mostly women who are thinking of transitioning their careers to build a more intentional, fulfilling life.
I invited Goli on the show because so many clients who come to me in burnout are DYING to quit their jobs. In fact, some have already left. It's worth pausing and deciding your next move with confidence and assurance, for the best possible reasons. Leaving a job simply to escape the suffering of burnout often isn't effective. In working with clients, I often suggest they recover from burnout first, then move.
Listen in for Goli's wisdom on how to make the next move successful for you.

It's super-helpful to know how to use the vagus nerve to promote instant calm in your nervous system, mind and body.
Otherwise, if your nervous system is chronically triggered by stress and anxiety, you may remain in fight-or-flight for long periods and this will harm your mood, wellbeing and health.
Listen in for a quick primer on how the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) works and why you should care, plus Stephen Porges' Polyvagal Theory.
When you understand the real negative effects of chronic stress on rest, repair, and social functions, you will quickly see how important (and easy!) it is to manage the ANS. Learn various exercises and techniques to stimulate the vagus nerve and promote relaxation. Listeners are invited to join the Burnout to Leadership program for further support.

One of my clients asked me last week how to start giving himself approval. It's a great question, because in burnout we're pretty mean to ourselves and, as a result, constantly seek external approval. A painful quest, huh?
So it's helpful to understand this typical burnout pattern and exactly how to resolve it.
When performance at work isn't great and our self-esteem is flat-lining, it's a great time to have our own back. It may sound flippant to "be our best ally", but listen in for how to do it authentically and with a warmth and compassion that actually feels good.
Everyone deserves to recover from burnout and feel worthy and cared for.
If you're ready to quit burnout and take your leadership skills to the next level, join the Burnout to Leadership program. Prepare for an eye-opening transition from the torture of burnout to a powerful, positive and rewarding future.

It's vital to know that you can have great success after burnout, since burnout comes with an extra dose of despair.
So I'm going to say it here:
If professional burnout is your main problem, you can have your mojo back, life can be sweet and better things await.
This episode is full of success stories from my clients who have forged spectacular results, often from long forgotten dreams and almost universally by crawling wearily out of the dark pit of burnout into the sunshine.
They did. You can.
When a person emerges from burnout, as they surely do in this step-by-step proven program, and the lights go back on - two things happen:
OK three things - they have much more passion and sense of fulfilment and these generate an 'unexpected' big leap forward in their career.

The first step in burnout recovery can be daunting. Many men have no idea if, or how, burnout can be fixed - and facing the prospect of talking about what they see as a failing isn't very appealling.
Does it feel like a leap of faith to you? No worries, I've got your back. Not only is burnout NOT a failing, it's the hallmark of extremely high-achieving powerful contributors. You've just hit one or more road bumps and it's knocked the wind out of your sails. Recovery is a predictable step-by-step process that will restore all that is good in your work self.
Choosing to recover is an act of tremendous courage and self-support. As soon as you decide to be in the solution, a huge burden is lifted from your shoulders.
After that, simply follow the steps through guided personal coaching sessions, to overcome all that bothers you at work. I will be your expert guide. Your mojo - everything you previously thought was good about you - will return tenfold. We'll fix some lifelong irritations as we go.
If you're in burnout, I want to be clear - longterm recovery is 100% attainable.
You can outperform anything you've done in the past and enjoy life and work again.
You can restart your career growth in under 6 months.
Listen to the episode, then come and tell me where you're stuck, and let's set a course for your future.

Do you want your career to grow this year?
In these times of interest rate hikes, escalating cost of living and widespread job loss - you can protect your career and finances, even if you are currently in burnout.
There is a golden opportunity right now for you to bring all your best attributes to the fore, when others are in retreat. To "keep your head, when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you." (Rudyard Kipling, "If")
You can be the bull in a bear market.
This is the journey I take my burntout clients on: the return to optimal success. I'm not satisfied merely supporting men out of burnout. Once they get their mojo back, I want them to be at their best, enjoy work and life, and create whatever they were born to create.
It's not a pipe-dream. Listen in for examples of clients' actual results. There are many more.
That kind of success is available to you in the Burnout to Leadership program.
Come and talk to me - let's plan out how that will look in your case.

You may have discovered that from the dark trenches of burnout, a new work role often looks very seductive. However, all is not as it seems.
If you are exhausted and frustrated to the extent of burnout, I always recommend you put on the coaching life-vest first, rather than bale out for a new position. Otherwise, the cynicism and frustration that have become so habitual run the risk of being portable, straight into the next job.
Once my clients recover from burnout, though, they are beautifully positioned to re-assess their career options from a place of energy, enthusiasm and optimism. Better choices become available at that point. Does that sound good?
I do encourage a deep re-evaluation of priorities, desires and values, so the decision about what to do next comes from a completely new perspective and old patterns are not repeated. This episode talks about how achieve that for yourself.

As leaders, we might be tempted to ..ahem.. over-manage our teams, but in fact the greatest success is much more likely to come from teaching them to self-manage and letting their collective creative genius rip!
Here we will talk about the 3 steps to building effective self-managed teams, which are: Letting go of micro-management and the disempowering urge to solve your team's problems for them; Hiring people for the right attitude, or empowering the people you have to rise to the occasion; and Training them how to successfully self-manage in a productive and cohesive way.
Once you have your people self-managing, and they know how they got there, you can continually raise the bar on what they can achieve. They will now be working for you, instead of you working for them.
Packed with the best tips I have learned from various people, this is blueprint for getting started.

Anxiety is the main axis around which all the other symptoms of burnout revolve and it's especially so for leaders, whose distress might be amplified by the distress of the people they lead.
Many of us are promoted into leadership without much training, and rarely do we receive instruction on how to lead high-performing teams. So it's likely that however we worked prior to leadership is how we fundamentally still work, but with added responsibility and anxiety.
The question we can ask ourselves then is not HOW we want to lead but WHO we want to be, as leaders.
So today, I'm addressing the stigma of leadership anxiety, how to relate to it and how to manage it.

Performative productivity sound good. Doesn't it?
But in burnout, it isn't. It's looking like you're being productive, without actually delivering the deep value that's expected of you. It's looking busy, but feeling jaded and cynical.
Here we will explore the signs of performative productivity and why you might be working this way.
Then we'll look at alternatives that will empower you and your team to become more successful, engaged and mutually supportive, so that you can deliver top class results with less effort, less friction and more fun.
I also include the traits I hire for, as an inclusive and people-centred leader. This has been so successful for me, I teach all my clients how to open up their leadership skills-base in the same way. Warning: Can increase career prospects.

Our anguish in burnout tends to be magnified enormously by a merciless inner critic, that chips away at our self-esteem, morale and motivation all day long.
But you don't need to put up with THAT kind of friend!
When you turn down the firehose of self-criticism, you can create enough space to begin the work of burnout recovery and get a whole lot of energy and enthusiasm back.
In this episode I talk about WHY we have an inner critic and HOW to work skillfully with it, so it doesn't keep you beaten down in burnout.

Many of us dissociate when confronted with overwhelming uncomfortable emotions. It's a habit we pick up as children, that we could easily drop as adults, when we have greater emotional resilience. Yet we don't. Particularly in burnout. We can employ dissociation to withdraw further and further from a reality that has become increasingly painful.
Here we explore the mechanism of dissociation and some techniques to work skillfully to reduce it, since the price we pay for dissociation is not being present to our human experience and to the important people in our lives.

Develop natural confidence around people - try these exercises to boost your confidence with people and feel less at the mercy of others' opinions.
One of the most devastating aspects of any burnout experience is lack of confidence around people - where we fear judgment, withdraw and isolate, then feel left out and even more at risk of failure.
Luckily, social insecurity is as amenable to change as any other misery of burnout.
Learn how to tell if your social confidence is affected by burnout and how to create an internal supply of confidence, without asking anything of others. This is how you can join back in at work and feel supported.

Is your work dying a slow and painful death because you 've lost self-confidence?
In burnout and business-building, confidence is a key asset, without which morale flops and decisions become torture.
Don't do that to yourself! Self-confidence is just a skill and it can be boosted quite simply with coaching.
Try this one powerful exercise to boost your confidence and move forward with decisive clarity and efficiency.
What could you achieve in life, and what would your days look like, if you radiated a calm and easy self-confidence? If you stopped worrying so much about making a mistake?
How do you think you'd feel if you were so confident that solutions flowed like water? I coach people until clarity and efficiency take the place of doubt, confusion, rage, despair and inaction.

Burnout recovery depends first on creating a sense of safety. You'll find it hard to recover without one. This is why sometimes organisational support for employees falls short. So-called 'wellbeing' programs. Taking a holiday, playing table football, eating a better diet are all unlikely to cure burnout, because they don't fix the root cause of the problem.
The coaching tools I teach can be used to create spectacular results in life, but safety comes first. You first need to create a safe path out of exhaustion, anxiety, frustration and despair and rebuild your capacity for change. Then, clear the runway!
Here I share the steps to create that safety, resilience and wellbeing that are the prerequisites for lasting burnout recovery and career growth.

I help men emerge from burnout, which I love to do. Seeing a man get back on his feet, return to the helm of his life and enjoy work, people and life is delightful. Watching his career blossom again- it's magic. Hearing the quality of his relationships deepen - excellent!
But it doesn't stop there. The high-achieving men who come to me are natural born leaders, but they're often held back by hidden forces within themselves.
Leadership skills are just skills. Anyone can learn them. I teach them, as most men I work with have risen through the ranks as a top-flight professional working hands-on in their area of expertise - physicians, accountants, lawyers, financiers, business consultants, academics business owners, sales executives and so on.
These people may be in management positions, but they have often not been taught how to transition to a leadership that fully reflects their many talents.
So this episode is the first of 4 on developing all the foundation leadership skills to fast-track your leadership career journey.

Goals challenge us, but they don't have to be a dreaded slog, filled with procrastinationa and remorse. Make it easy on yourself using the tips in this episode.
Connecting a goal with meaning and purpose will give your goal the best chance of survival! As you set the goal, explore WHY it's important to you and who you will become on the achieving of it. Where, on life's journey, will it take you?
Above all, don't set a goal because you 'should'., e.g. I should do more yoga, meditate or lose weight. Those goals, as you know from past experience, are hard to pull off. They are fuelled by shame, guilt and inadequacy - a negative emotion.
Instead choose a goal that will delight you, both in the actions you take towards it and how you think about yourself as you progress. Love yourself into success.

It's my contention that - no matter how deep in burnout you may be - you are a glorious human being. Your current suffering is more superficial than intrinsic.
So let's explore and excavate that inner goodness. It will relieve your suffering to re-connect first with yourself and then others.

Here are 5 reasons you might baulk when someone makes you a wonderful offer to create a better life. I show you how to overcome your own objections, if the offer's something you actually do want.
92% of New Year's Resolutions end up in the weeds. Learn how to put yourself in the 8% that make theirs happen.
Our brains are biased against new ideas, but if you understand where your reservations are coming from, you CAN create the change you seek.
As we come on to the New Year, you can use this understanding to empower better choices for the coming year, and to stick to those choices.

Many of us don't feel safe in burnout and see ourselves as victims of an unfair system. We grasp for control, seeking the safety we lack.
That's not working, eh?
Even if the system IS treacherous, trying to reform it can be fruitless and leave us feeling even more helpless and resentful.
No problem! If this sounds like your situation, you have MUCH more control over your own experience than you think. Don't wait for the system, find out how to return to genuine power and authority over your life.
A sense of safety is essential for sustainable burnout recovery, but the good news is that safety will come from inside you. I will teach you this critical skill.
“Safety is not the absence of threat.
It is the presence of connection.” Gabor Maté

If you're ready for big change in your life but somehow you're holding yourself back, here's how to release yourself in to what is truly possible for you.
It starts with letting go of your limited view of yourself, what you have achieved so far and (by extension) what you think you reasonably might achieve in the future.
No big leap forward was ever made by iteration.
Reinvention is the game, and shedding your old skin is the cost of entry.

Quiet Quitting - turning up for one's job and doing the bare minimum - what do you think ? I've been hearing many opinions that strike me as unsympathetic, so here I choose to redress the balance.
If you're burnt out and quiet quitting, that seems like a rational response, but it's unlikely to help you feel better. I believe resolving burnout itself gives you much broader and more powerful options.
So, listen for tips on resolving Quiet Quitting as an individual or as a leader.

It's that moment when fear blows up in our faces and suddenly we CAN'T hold it together any more. Things stop working and we're left alone with our feelings.
Life is trying to tell us something. In my case, that there is deeper post-burnout growth available, there's more truth to face. It's another layer of the onion and I'm choosing to stay open and present to that. Let the reinvention begin!

Why do smart people make irrational decisions every day? The answers will surprise you. Humans are a bit quirky in our decison-making. It's more of an art than a science.
In fact, we make decisions based to a large extent on our survival instincts, ego, emotions - ANYTHING but logical anaylsis.
This week I review Predictably Irrational by Dan Ariely to deep-dive into how we make decisions. You will be amazed!

With coaching we can solve any problem. But sometimes we're so used to the old way of reacting to things, or to people we know, that we abandon the solution in favour of what we used to do, that didn't work so well. So here's what to do in that case, to handle stubborn problems.
There is a primary coaching and self-coaching tool that you can learn to fix any problem. It's called the model and here's how to use it. Learn how the brain works, what causes us to see 'problems' everywhere, and what to do about it. You can't fix the world, what happens in it, or other people, but you can feel better about it nonetheless.

Learn why our opinions of others, and what we think others think about us, are so important.
In burnout, we adopt a rather pessimistic view of ourselves, our performance and the people we work with. We often worry excessively - I'm sure you know what I mean! And the more exhausted we become, the worse our people experience get, until finally we withdraw and isolate.
Navigating the world of people, opposing views, frank communication and teamwork is a skill we can practice, to enjoy better results and a lot less stress at work. Along the way we can learn to be a whole lot more compassionate and gentle with ourselves.
Here are my top 3 tips to improve your interractions with other humans.
Here is a little of what tipped me in to burnout in my career in software development and leadership. It was a long, slow grisly drag that ended quite badly, but it contains some elements that may strike a chord with you. I recovered and I no longer fear burnout, because I learned the skill of resilience and tapped in to my passion in a new and more rewarding way. Everything is a blessing, in the end.
