Nancy McKinley is an award winning author of fiction and nonfiction. Her novel-in-stories, St. Christopher on Pluto, was featured on NPR Fresh Air by Maureen Corrigan and was a finalist for the Colorado Book Award. Nancy earned her Ph.D. from State University of New York at Binghamton (now Binghamton University), receiving the John Gardner Newhouse Award; M.A. from Colorado State University; and B.A. from College of the Holy Cross where she was one of the first females at the previously male school. A founding faculty member for the low-residency Wilkes University Maslow Family Graduate Program in Creative Writing, she teaches fiction and nonfiction, and supervises the writer-as-teacher internships. She also taught in the English Department and served as the Director of Women’s Studies. Having called Pennsylvania home for decades, she now lives in Ft. We are joined by trailblazing Scranton City Council member Dr Jessica Rothchild to talk about not only the book and movie but also the horrors of conversion therapy.

Dr. Jessica Rothchild was elected to Scranton City Council in 2019, making history as the city’s first out LGBTQ member. While on council, she has proposed and passed an ordinance banning conversion therapy in Scranton. Jessica lives with her wife, 15 month old daughter, and two goldendoodles. In addition to being a Councilwoman, she works full-time as a physical therapist in outpatient rehabilitation. She is a graduate of the University of Scranton with both a Doctor of Physical Therapy and a Bachelors of Exercise Science degree. Jessica has always been a passionate advocate for the LGBTQ community since college, founding her school’s first official LGBTQ student organization. She has served on many non-profit boards. She is currently a member of the PA Commission for Women and the PA State Democratic Committee. She is the Vice Chair for the LGBTQ Caucus of the PA Democrats. In her spare time, she is an avid skier and enjoys hiking.

Ross Klavan’s work spans film, TV, stage, books and radio. His screenplay for the film Tigerland was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award and was directed by Joel Schumacher, starring Colin Farrell. Other screenplays were written for Miramax, Weinstein, Paramount, A&E, InterMedia, the BBC, Vortexplore, Walden Media, and TNT. He’s acted as script consultant for SenArts Films and teaches screenwriting at the graduate level as well as privately. Klavan’s darkly comic novel “Schmuck” was published by Greenpoint Press. With her historical “Heritage Fiction” novels, she’s made a niche in writing about ancestors, creating fascinating stories based on true events. She loves nothing better than to be whisked off to past eras to meet those whose lives are worth sharing.
Ora’s one of those people who always has a project she’s excited about. Besides being a genealogist and author, she’s an artist, seamstress, lover of a good book, traveler, antiquer, upcycler, and history buff. Although she’s lived in Arizona since 1986, she spent her early life in Lake Tahoe, California, where her passion to write blossomed on a tranquil riverbank with a beautiful backdrop of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

This week Donny and Maura talk about the Italian novel “The Lost Daughter” by Elena Ferrante and the 2021 Netflix movie directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal. The film is nominated for many Academy Awards, including Best Adapted Screenplay, Olivia Colman for Best Actress, and Jesse Buckley for Best Supporting Actress. The book and movie introduced us to a new term “maternal ambivalence”, and Donny and I confess we were about lost ourselves this week.

It's our birthday week! Today Donny and Maura talk about the Alice Munro short story, "A Bear Came Over the Mountain" and the Sarah Polley adaptation, "Away From Her." A man comes to grips with wife's Alzheimer's diagnosis and her friendship with another man in the assisted facility where she lives.
Alice Munro won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 2013.
Sarah Polley was nominated or Best Adapted Screenplay for the film and Julie Christie was nominated for Best Actress.
