Hey there, lovely listeners! Welcome back to another episode of The Unscrew You Podcast. Today, we're diving into a very interesting topic – the "emotional thermostat" – and how it totally relates to managing our reactions and behaviors, especially when it comes to parenting. Picture this: just like how a room thermostat keeps things comfy at a specific temperature, our emotional responses are guided by an internal emotional thermostat. So, when you're all fired up and ready to yell at the kids for not listening, it's like your emotional thermostat has a mind of its own! And let's face it, trying to change this by sheer willpower or quick fixes often leaves us hanging, as that emotional thermostat kicks right back in without asking for permission. Here's the scoop: behavior isn't all about logic – it's heavily tied to our emotions. That's why understanding and giving a little reset to your emotional thermostat can seriously transform your family dynamics for the better. Want help with your family? Should you give your kids an allowance?

How do you control how they spend money?

Is there a way for you to track their spending?

Should you let them make mistakes?

How do you teach them good money skills?

Mari is a passionate entrepreneur and devoted mother of 3 young children. She is the founder of Ketshop, a parent-approved shopping app. Ketshop empowers kids to manage their own money in real-world transactions.

In this episode of The Unscrew You Podcast, I challenge the common belief that striving to be a good parent can lead to fulfillment, highlighting how it can actually result in suffering. This episode explores the reasons behind the constant sacrificing and overburdening that parents experience, attributing it to societal conditioning and the expectation of eventual recognition and appreciation from their children. Contrary to this mindset, I suggest that excessive sacrifice is not the solution and may be detrimental to both parents and children. Instead, I advocate for creating space for lightheartedness, joy, play, and fun in parenting.

Today I’m sharing with you a secret - a secret podcast I’m creating specifically for parents who want to do the deeper work of becoming untriggered.

The creation of this secret podcast was inspired by the parents I work with inside of Powerfully Grounded Parenting accelerator and what they said to me was they wanted me to do a workshop for them specifically on triggers and how to work through them, so we did, I created a workshop just for them- this is one of many perks of being inside my community is that you get to ask for deep dive trainings, and that workshop was so helpful that I thought maybe it would be helpful to bring it out to more people, just so you can get some relief from the deeper issues that are beyond just behavior management of your kids. So this new secret podcast is the answer to exactly that.

This was a way for me to go super focused on one topic whereas here on the Unscrew You Podcast I can continue to talk about all things parenting and have amazing guests joining us, but on the secret podcast we’re laser focused on one topic which is triggers.

If you want access to it, DM me the word “SECRET” and I’ll get you going!!

If you're a parent with kids 12 and under, looking to have peace in your family while also raising respectful kids who listen to you without you having to yell at them, but you don’t know how to do that and also stay regulated, maintain boundaries or even understand your kids’ behaviors - email rachel@rachelduffyhere.com or DM me on IG and I’ll see how I can help!

This topic is sensitive, so please skip it if you are not in a mental space to talk about suicide and suicide ideation in children.

Today’s guest is Melody Murray, a licensed marriage and family therapist working in private practice. Melody is a former mental health assessor at Seattle Children’s Hospital and she helps us understand suicide and how to handle it as parents, if we suspect our kids are thinking about harming themselves to this degree.

I thoroughly enjoyed having her on the show, I would love to hear your thoughts as well!

You can find out more about her here: https://www.melodylmft.com/

In this episode I share with you some powerful mindset shifts you can adopt for yourself if you want to start changing your experience with your kids.

Yes, we do need to build skills. Yes, there are strategies. Definitely you need to take action. AND the mindset piece of parenting is just as important. No strategy, not tactic, no action will work unless you have the right mindset and similarly, the mindset alone is not enough.

On many episodes we get into the strategies, but in this episode, we’re looking into the simple shift you can make right now in order to see results in your family.

In this episode I share with you 3 lessons from my recent masterminds in NYC, that you can apply in your family today if you want to see an uplevel in how you show up as a parent.

I’m a huge believer in surrounding yourself with people who inspire you, push you to evolve and compassionately hold you accountable. We are all human, we all have blindspots and we all tell ourselves stories that limit us. IT’s human nature. We can either just be limited by our own stories and narratives, or we can challenge them.

There’s no shame in not wanting to challenge yourself, but it does mean you cannot transcend your circumstances.

So if the kids ignoring you makes your blood boil….

If their sass makes you worried they’re disrespectful and rude….

If you lay awake at night praying you’re not screwing them up…..

You are going to have to change something in yourself so you can create change in your family dynamics.

Trigger warning - this episode will challenge you!

Ever had this thought that it would be great to have deeper connection in your family, but at the same time, things are “good enough” or “okay” right now, you’re getting by, as long as you don’t ruffle too many feathers or breathe too deeply, you’re somehow holding it together and that status quo is something you’ve learned to be ok with?

This episode is a challenge to the status quo that you may have learned to accept, so buckle up and get ready for some truths that may be hard to hear but are necessary to admit to ourselves….

Does everything feel like a struggle to you?

if you're a parent with kids 12 and under, looking to have peace in your family while also raising respectful kids who listen to you without you having to yell at them, but you don’t know how to do that and also stay regulated, maintain boundaries or even understand your kids’ behaviors - here’s what you need to know.

Chances are you're falling into one or more of the common traps that smart, good parents get into without even realizing it.

On this episode we explore those common traps and we go though what you need to know in order to get out of those traps and go from Roller Coaster Parent to Powerfully Grounded Parent in 90 days.

This episode is for you if you are…

  • Yelling at your kids because it’s the only way they listen, but yelling feels wrong and you immediately regret it and feel guilty.
  • Overwhelmed by the endless to do list, no time to take courses or attend calls.
  • Tried all the things: books, free trainings, courses but nothing has worked.
  • Counting the hours until bedtime or school time so you can catch a break.
  • Kids push back on everything and you don’t know how to have boundaries without squashing your child’s spirit.
  • From the moment the kids wake up it’s a struggle to get out of bed, dressed, shoes on and ready to get out the door on time for school.
  • Disrespect and defiance: kids speaking rudely to you.

And all you want is…

  • Peace for more than 10 mins at a time.
  • Easier time parenting.
  • Cooperation 60%-70% of the time.
  • More fun together as a family.
  • Having less guilt and not worrying constantly about what kind of grown up your kids will become.
  • Yelling less, not feeling like your buttons are pushed non stop.

The year 2022 comes to an end and we want to celebrate by bringing back our listener's favorite guest episode of 2022!

This is a super special episode, we’re trying out something we've never done before and we’re doing a 2 part deep dive convo on parenting and entrepreneurship with Nicole Culver.

If you don’t know Nicole, she’s a CEO and mom of 3 who helps expert coaches create evergreen digital products even without the fancy funnels, ads or large audiences.

Nicole and I had part 1 of our discussion over on her podcast, and part 2 is here in this episode. We talked about parenting and entrepreneurship and how things like trauma, conditionings and healing show up in both areas of life.

Listen to this episode and then tag nicole and I on social and tell us what you think!!

As we are looking back at 2022 I picked my favorite episode from this year and wanted to share it with you. Enjoy! Is there such a thing as healthy control over our kids? And why is it so damn hard? In this episode we take a look at control from a different perspective (as always) and we move away from either of these extremes:

X - authoritative control (do this because I'm your parent)

X - complete permissive lack of control (avoiding conflict)

Neither one of these models serves our kids, so how can we have control AND still be healthy, conscious and providing them with a sturdy emotional foundation?

Listen to the episode and share what you learned!

Are Positive & Negative Reinforcement Actually Working to Correct Your Child’s Behavior?

If you’re honest with yourself, I’m willing to bet you've also noticed that while positive & negative reinforcement can work in the moment, they rarely - if ever - lead to meaningful, long lasting change in behavior. If anything, you’re probably baffled at how 2 days, 2 hours or even just 2 mins later your child is behaving in the exact way you just tried to correct!

So If positive and negative reinforcement worked - why does it feel like you live in groundhog day??

It’s because external reinforcement is a trap. If you're caught in the External Reinforcement Trap, you’re likely …

  • raising your voice at your kids at least 3 x a day
  • can't get past breakfast without losing your patience at least twice
  • worried you must be a bad parent

  • counting the hours until naptime or bedtime so you can get a break.

  • not knowing what to do to repair your relationship after a fight.
  • telling your kid over and over that “It’s ok to be angry but it’s not ok to hit” and not knowing why they keep hitting when they’re angry

In today’s episode I’m sharing 2 quick and easy exercises to practice with your kids that will regulate both of you in just 60 seconds. Most people wait until the heat of the moment to whip out an exercise they learned somewhere, they heard from someone, they saw on Tiktok, but do any of those actually work for you in the moment if you haven’t practiced together and you haven’t figured out how to modify or even how to regulate at all with your kid when things are not heated? I’ll bet not. Get ready because we are about to show you how to fix it.

Learn on the job at work, not at home when it comes to your family.

Have you come across those posts on social media that prompt you to share your wins? Or maybe those gratitude journals where you get to acknowledge all that you’re grateful for?

Often times, if you’re a high achiever like me, you struggle to think of a win to celebrate and share or you feel guilty for everything you have, knowing most people have it so much worse.

There’s another way to think about gratitude prompts and sharing wins. In this episode we break down how you can use those prompts to rewire and reverse the need for external validation (which we’re all conditioned for, to some degree).

Rewire your own need first and then show your kids how to think differently, so they too can be free from the need for external validation.

Coming to you from beautiful Lake Tahoe, CA, in today's episode we’re breaking down how we can raise kids with a sturdy emotional foundation so they can stand up to bullies, have confidence, resilience, and a strong voice and at the same time - also experience ease & simplicity in your family by having kids who are motivated to cooperate with you.

View Details

Is there such a thing as healthy control over our kids? And why is it so damn hard? In this episode we take a look at control from a different perspective (as always) and we move away from either of these extremes:

X - authoritative control (do this because I'm your parent)

X - complete permissive lack of control (avoiding conflict)

Neither one of these models serves our kids, so how can we have control AND still be healthy, conscious and providing them with a sturdy emotional foundation?

Listen to the episode and share what you learned!

If you're tired of having to either bribe your kids into doing something or threaten to take something away unless they listen - I have something for you. What if a simple shift in what you're doing FIRST to address your children's challenging behavior could be the change you've been looking for? Make parenting easier by implementing this simple step that will help you bring ease and harmony into your family, and create cooperation, connection and engagement with your kids naturally, no bribes or threats required.

How do you find purpose? What is purpose anyway and where is it? This week's episode is less in the "how to" realm and more on a deeper realm of reconnecting with purpose as parents, unpacking the definition of that (my definition will likely be different than what you think!).

I recently had an opportunity to speak on purpose as it relates to entrepreneurship inside a private mastermind where I coach, and that's what inspired me to do this episode for you as a parent too.

I'm excited for you to listen to this episode, let me know if you have thoughts about it, and if you haven't already - please leave us a review on itunes!

Today’s episode is a bit of a departure from our normal episode structure because instead of me interviewing a guest, she’s actually interviewing me. Today’s guest host is Andrea Baykir and she has brought together 20 experts from the wellness and parenting communities for a FREE 5-day summit to learn the methods, tools and daily practices to begin feeling less overwhelmed, and start living with greater PEACE, FREEDOM and PURPOSE!

Today’s episode is my interview with Andrea as one of the speakers in the summit. We talk about triggers and how they offer us an opportunity for us to begin exploring what is underneath the surface.

Did you know that 90% of our actions and behaviors are dictated from subconscious programming. Yes, this means that 90% of what we do and say we are doing automatically, usually from beliefs we developed around experiences as our younger self.

If we want to begin to create a life that is filled with greater freedom and peace, we need to go within to discover what the beliefs are that are in misalignment with what we would like to see in our lives.

Listen to the episode and then join me and 20+ other speakers in the FREE Chaos to Calm Interview Series where we look at questions such as:

  • How can I become aware of this subconscious program that is running my life?
  • What can I do to manage the stress and anxiety that is getting in the way?
  • What are practices I can do each day to get my mind, body and soul ready for the life I want to live?

You won’t want to miss this! Sign up for FREE HERE.

Andrea has been generous enough to share a gift with us, which is a free month to her membership :

I was 45 mins late to pick up from school. It was the last day of school, early dismissal, and even though I knew it was early dismissal, well…..I messed up.

You WILL mess up. You WILL be imperfect. You WILL disappoint.

It’s not about avoiding those situations, it’s about how you handle it when they happen.

In this episode I share my lessons so you can learn from them too.

Today’s episode was not really planned but in light of this week’s overturn of the Roe v Wade decision by the SCOTUS and in light of the many DMs I’ve been having with parents and women, I decided to put into words some of my thoughts.

This episode is not about whether the decision was right or wrong, my opinion on this is irrelevant to the discussion. This episode is about understanding the decision from a slightly different perspective, as it pertains to where we are as a society and what we can do about it.

I know this episode may ruffle some feathers, and if you are triggered by it - I extend compassion to you, I see your pain, and I hope we can have a conversation sometime.

The way I see this decision and how it reflects on where we are as a country, only strengthens my resolve to continue my own personal work as well as the work I do with all my clients - parents or non parents - to further our own awareness, our own consciousness and our own healing.

Reach out to me on info@sagacitylab.com if you want my help in becoming the parent you want to be.

Today's guest is a writer and author, with a depth of experience in writing about parenthood and how to change our narrative about ourselves and our children. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Lisa Sugarman about parenting imperfectly, expectations, what is our role as parents and how do change our narrative. We also talked about some heavier topics like mental illness and suicide awareness, as Lisa is in the midst of writing a book about the loss of her own father to suicide when she was 10 years old.

I'm excited for you to listen to this episode and share in the depths of this guest. Let us know what you thought and if you haven't already - please leave us a review on itunes!

The topic of this week's episode was inspired by one of our listeners who brought up the topic of talking with our kids about diversity, equity and inclusion on the heels of the progress flag being flown at her child's elementary school.

In this episode we address how to answer when young kids ask questions we may not be prepared to answer yet,, or we know they are not mature enough to handle the entire truth about.

We also talk about the meaning of inclusion as it pertains to inclusion of values and opinions we disagree with, what is our role as a democratic society when we raise out kids according to our values and we prepare them for the fact that other people hold opposing values.

Sensitive topics included.

Today's episode is a very special one. Something we haven't done before ... We asked a group of experts and former guests from this podcast the exact same question:

What's one quality you think someone needs to develop to become a better parent and why? How do you work on developing this quality in yourself?

With us today we have the amazing Hala Chibani, who is an award winning leadership expert, online business coach, strategist, founder of Next Level Entrepreneurs, and mom of two girls.

We also brought back David Richards, who has committed his life to a path of spiritual awakening, and is dedicated to helping others find their intuitive warrior within.

The wonderful Dr. Tami Berry is with us today. She is a former surgeon and internationally recognized stress mastery expert and coach. She helps purpose-driven professionals - like all of us here - overcome burnout so they can enjoy life with renewed energy, confidence, and joy.

And last but not least we brought back Beverly Simpson. Beverly began her career in fitness, as a certified personal trainer wanting to help people live a healthy diet-free lifestyle. She was the fastest growing trainer to climb the ranks at Crunch ultimately helping them generate $2mil a month.

You've heard me talk on the podcast about personal power, power leakages and power takeovers, and I wanted to share with you exactly how I "walk the talk" when it comes to those things in my life.

Does a mindset coach even need a coach? Yes, everyone does! In today's episode we are speaking with expert mindset coach Deb Lauren. She shares with us her journey into single parenthood post divorce, depression and in the midst of opening up her own coaching business. She also shares what becoming Powerfully Grounded has done for her in her family and her business and HOW she got there.

So many gold nuggets….. It’s hard to list them all, but my favorite is when she talks about shifting out of the role of “fixer/problem solver” into an entirely different role for herself and her family which actually solved more problems…..

What should you practice with your kids to help them regulate?

How do you return your BASELINE nervous system state to safety?

Why is this important?

Today on the podcast we get a tad nerdy about brain science again, specifically about the nervous system and we talk about what it means that our baselines are already out of whack first thing in the morning when we wake up, and also how do we change our baseline from high alert to safety?

This is a CRUCIAL skill to master if you want to help your kids co regulate, if you want to regulate yourself and if you want to STOP feeling like every little thing is about to tip you over the edge.

If so - pull up a chair, this episode will be super valuable to you! Today’s guest is Stepfamily Counsellor Brittany Lynch and in this episode we unpack:

  • The role we think a stepmom should have

If you find yourself saying "Rachel, just tell me what to do with my kids!!!" - chances are, you're unaware of the invisible elements of parenting. Right off the bat I’ll say that this episode requires part B, so I promise I’ll bring Moshe back! Moshe Amsel talks with us today about his journey from an Orthodox Jewish upbringing that laid out clear expectations of how he should live his life - to a life that he created completely on his own terms, by his own design.

Moshe is a proud father of 6, a loving husband and a thriving businessman with decades of experience. His rich experience has enabled him to build multiple thriving businesses while also being a devoted family man, even a single dad at one point.

Moshe talks to us about harmonizing business and family, and what I admire most about him is his integrity - to his value of family first and not letting that get in the way of creating wealth and success by anyone’s measure.

You're developing awareness that there's more than meets the eye with regards to your kids. You're probably following all the social media accounts that are talking about consciousness, gentle parenting or self development. The problem is that although you feel some internal shifts, you're still not really seeing results in your family. You're STILL dealing with kids who don't listen unless you yell, feelings of guilt for not living up to the idea of the parent you want to be, counting hours until bedtime just so you can get a break. If this sounds familiar, you might be at the Awakening Parent phase of evolution.

In this episode, I will be sharing what that means so, be sure to take notes because I break down the mistakes and misconceptions most Awakening Parents make in Phase 2, as well as the key factors that will get you to the next level.

One common mistake many parents make is believing that all they need is for me to tell them what to do to fix their kids and they will live happily ever after. Parenting isn't a one-and-done type of experience – it’s a living breathing evolution.

After working for over 2 decades in the trenches with families, I've noticed a pattern in how we evolve. I've identified 6 phases of parenting evolution and in this episode, I'll be breaking down these phases and sharing how you can move forward inside your family.

Make sure you're subscribed to the show because over the next few episodes, I'll be breaking down each phase in more depth so that you can identify exactly where you are and how to move into the next phase.

When our family isn't what we thought it would be - we don't have the relationship with our parents that we wanted, we have nothing in common with our kids, our marriage did not last 'till death do us part or whatever happens inside your family that isn't what you expected, or what you had hoped - how do we go through that loss, that grief and come out the other side? Is there another side? How do we shift perspective as we go through loss while not by passing it?

"Attachment is at the root of suffering" - Buddha

In today's episode we break down what is attachment, how it sucks up our energy, how it gives away our power, and how we can start to raise our awareness to how much attachment we allow into our lives.

We also break down what non attachment or detachment is and what it is not (it isn't NOT caring!) and we highlight the difference between attachment and goal setting.

This episode is foundational in your understanding of consciousness and personal power, so don't miss it!

What do you do when you're stuck? When you've been doing the work, you've been healing but you're stuck. You're not seeing results or you feel you're regressing or you're just "not there yet". How do we handle these situations and what can we do to unscrew ourselves?

In this episode I share the 3 things I do when I have this experience and what it looks like in work and in parenting.

Ever wonder why it's so hard to quiet your mind? If you're so overwhelmed by the noise that's around you (social media, the news, the kids)- how will you ever be able to hear and receive guidance from a different source? Silencing the mind can be scary - especially if in that silence our fears come up, our traumas, our worries. It's a coping mechanism for anxiety to keep ourselves busy and overloaded (as exhausting as that is). How do we create some safety within the confines of our own bodies and minds? How do we slow down to reconnect with ourselves? How can we ever hope to connect with others if we can't even connect within ourselves? These questions and more are what we explore on this episode, so tune in!

When you think about living with confidence, parenting with confidence, relating to your own parents with confidence - what image comes to your mind? Is it someone who knows the answers? Someone who gets it right? Someone who has certainty in outcome?

In this week's episode I talk about a different type of confidence, one that has nothing to do with outcome, one that any of us can embody no matter where we are on our journey, a confidence that I learned from one of my teachers, Dr. Gabor Mate when I took his Compassionate Inquiry course.

Tune in to see how you can live a life of confidence even in the most uncertain and unpredictable times.

Your personality is not who you really are.
What?!?!
I know that doesn't make sense, but if you stick with me on this episode, I'll break down for you why your personality isn who you are, but rather a carefully crafted cocktail between who you are and the roles you had to play to secure attachment form your parents when you were growing up.
In this episode we talk about how to separate our true authentic selves from our personality, why we would want to do that, when it's appropriate to do that and what becomes available to us when we do.
As always - we go deep, so buckle up and get ready for a dive into consciousness!

How is it possible that even if you had a happy childhood, you STILL need to work on past hurts? In this episode we break down a more accurate definition of trauma, one that fits in with the common experience of having a good childhood, growing up to be a good person but still carrying around unresolved anger and hurt.

We also give a more accurate definition of "healing" and what that actually looks like in emotional work.

Lastly we talk about how the work of becoming Consciously Integrated changes every single relationship in the family, which is why this work is transformational.

Ok, maybe not in the actual film, but this analogy is still spot on. Every time we get our buttons pushed by our kids, we are entering our own DeLorean and traveling back in time. In this episode I break down why reacting to your kids’ unwanted behavior is like putting the cart before the horse, it’s the wrong step at the wrong time so it delivers the wrong result.

When I talk about parenting without punishment, it can be a hard thing to wrap your brain around if you have no idea what the steps are to getting there - we break it down in this episode - super simple!!!

This question embodies 2 presuppositions: 1. That your child is somehow missing their potential right now 2. That you have control over it.

In this episode we’re sharing what does maximizing potential really mean, who's potential is not maximized and how do we create the environment that supports it?

This episode is a precursor to an episode we're preparing about meaning and purpose - how do we help our kids live a life of meaning and purpose?

Listen to this episode on potential, and then let's talk about purpose!

Why isn't my mindfulness practice stopping me from yelling at my kids? Many of my clients tell me they practice mindfulness every day and STILL they find themselves triggered or yelling at their spouse of child. Through Adam’s Heart Centered Selling Method he’s now able to help other entrepreneurs to stay present, listen deeply, pace & lead with love while using simple (but POW-ER-FUL) questions & persuasive language patterns to bust objections, bust limiting beliefs, move potential customers forward towards the sale & then seal the deal.

I'm generally passionate about critical thinking. The reason is that all too often I have found myself operating on autopilot because I assumed things were a given, when really they weren't. I assumed the world was a certain way because I was raised with certain beliefs, and it wasn't until I understood the difference between a belief and a reality, that I began to change my life.
In today's episode, we look at 3 common misconceptions about parenting and how holding on to these misconceptions keeps us stuck in the feeling that we're bad parents.
