In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie as we chat about networking, what works, doesn't work and ways to find networking events! If you have a question you'd like us to discuss, feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com.

Key Talking Points* Networking is about relationships, not just contacts – Focus on building genuine connections rather than just expanding your contact list. * Consider commitment and flexibility in networking groups – While structured groups like BNI offer networking skills, they require a time and financial investment; subbing for members may offer flexibility. * Use diverse networking channels – Explore options like local Chamber of Commerce events or industry-specific gatherings to connect with potential clients outside of traditional networking groups. * Follow up with intention and consistency – Employ the “2-2-2” rule (contacting in 2 hours, 2 weeks, and 2 months as needed) to maintain relationships and be strategic with who you choose to engage. * Fortune is in the Follow Up - When you network always look for golden nuggets to follow up on. * Define your pitch concisely – Practice a 30-second introduction that clearly states who you are, what you do, and who your ideal client is. This clarity helps others easily understand and remember you. * Bring a “networking partner” for confidence – Attending events with a friend or colleague can ease anxiety, boost visibility, and help expand connections more effectively. * Tailor your networking to your audience – Identify events and groups that align with your target clients, such as pet owners for pet portrait artists or outdoor events for landscape artists, to connect meaningfully with those interested in your work.

Welcome to Artists Soar, where we help you rise with your art! In today's episode, we’re diving into a topic every creative struggles with—knowing when to pivot. If you find yourself dreading a task, it might be a sign to shift your direction. But what if it's just a moment to pause, reflect, and realign? So, grab your favorite drink, settle in, and let’s navigate the twists and turns of the creative process together!"

We'd love to hear what worked for you. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss, feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com.

Key Talking Points* If you dread doing something, then that's an indication it is time to pivot. * If you enjoy it, keep going, then it is a matter of finding the right audience or redirecting my interest to attract the right audience. * Sometimes it can be a "wait" rather than a "stop", an opportunity to slow down and evaluate to see where you want to go. * There is really isn't a wrong direction, there is a way to correct the course and you won't know until you get to the destination that the turns you took made sense. * Try not to compare, but rather - analyze what is working and use that. Try to be confident, keep your head in your race - not theirs. * Try to have fun in the journey. People are attracted to fun.

Key Talking Points* Stephanie was doing the research: how to fill the gap between being small and the large artists/podcasters to gain income? * The threshold of when to get a Patreon, again, falls to the numbers: you need a lot of fans/followers before it is worth the time and money to do a Patreon. * 2-3% will convert from one platform to the next. So focus on the 1st platform before moving onto another. * The marketing of the Patreon and providing value on Patreon is the equivalent effort to other marketing avenues. * Until, add a donation button to your website, or add a donation button to your newsletter.

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key Talking Points* Some keyword research tools Stephanie uses: Sale Samurai, MerchInformer, Ubersuggest, (affiliate links). * Research how other artists prepare for collections. * Although not specifically stated: you can research other artists without comparing your art to their art - instead compare the processes. * Remember who you are trying to marketing to. Talk about it in terms of how it can mean something to them, so they can relate to the piece. * Not every piece has research ahead of time, sometimes it is just about the painting... * Random topics: + Grocery prices + Email feature on Shopify

In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie just chat about whether they use or view art as therapy. In Jules' case she didn't turn to art to help her healing. The point of the episode to say that it is ok to NOT turn to art for therapy - there is absolutely no right way to grieve or handle what is going on in your mind and body. Find your way.

We'd love to hear what worked for you.

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key Talking Points* During Julie's cancer treatments she didn't find art as an escape because of her art generally comes from a place of joy. * Stephanie finds art as her way of expressing her views of the world. * Some of the things you can do you don't have to publish. * For those going through something, please talk with someone to process.

In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie chat about ways they are staying motivated with specific techniques and mindset that we and others have.

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key Talking Points* Sometimes a deadline is motivation - like Jule's advent calendar with coloring pages. check it out here: https://www.juliemstudios.com/day-02 * Going to a group social painting can be motivating! Which is an artist date (taken from Artist Way,) * Take on one thing at a time until it is a habit, then add another. It takes 45 days to make something into a habit (not 21 days). * Set a timer - Pomodoro technique - to stay motivated using a timer to work on x for a certain amount of time. + Stephanie uses Insight Timer App - Workplace - Get Into Focus - Length, then pick the time. * Music can help motivate too! but be respectful of those around you. * The people who succeed are the ones who don't give up. Know what you are doing matters. And proving people wrong. * All "failures" are a learning pivot.

In this episode, artists Rachel, Julie, and Stephanie talk about exhibitions and what Stephanie did to prepare for an upcoming exhibition (or didn't prepare) at Lowe Mill Arts & Entertainment and we get into our chatty selves.

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key Talking Points* Stephanie is having an exhibition at Lowe Mill from 11/22 - 2/3/2024. The original concept had evolved, as did I and thankfully Lowe Mill was accepting of this change. + Stephanie's approach to a painting is more subconscious work so she isn't able to create specific pieces for a specific subject. Is that something you can do?

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie have a very special guest with them, Audra King from She Loves Her Biz to chat with us about how to find the fun in your creative business again!!

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

    • Don't follow the 'shoulds'. And what are some ways to focus on what's important to you and not the 'shoulds'. - Omit the noise: perhaps take a break from Instagram or other social media.
    • To find the fun: the first thing to consider is what you want and then balance your schedule around that.
    • For Finding the fun in Marketing Audra recommends Brit Kolo's resource called "Marketing for your Personality Type".
      • Julie hates Networking who is an INTJ. So it is great to find things that DON'T work and then work towards what would work based on her personality.
      • Stephanie is an ENTJ - does a weekly artisan market show where she paints and talks about the paintings and pets. And while she's there collects email addresses to continue the relationship.
        • She doesn't have joy in Instagram but does in Facebook.
      • Rachel enjoys Facebook Group because of the interactions and Google Ads where there are no interactions.
      • For the negative comments, be above and beyond by providing the information or a link to the answer that was previously provided.
      • How to make sales fun?
        • The key question is: Does the energy you are putting in equal the compensation you receive?

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss procrastination and what they do and don't do - perhaps this will resonate with you (I rhymed there :) !

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

  • Stephanie: her personality requires her to be doing something all the time, but she does find she procrastinates on painting because of potential interruptions
  • Jule: if she is the one setting the deadlines, she'll easily push it off. But if she owes it to someone, she'll stay on task.
  • This is where I coach or accountability can help you not push off the deadlines that move you forward.
  • Rachel's procrastination comes from going down rabbit holes, and squirrel moments.
  • Draw out the 4 quadrants to determine what is important and urgent to meet the goals (Urgent-Important, Urgent - Not important, Not Urgent - Important, Not Urgent - Not important)
  • Advice: Flip the narrative - make a goal of nos instead of yeses. Take the shots like Michael Jordan.
  • Advice: Take imperfect actions.
  • Advice: If you are really struggling moving forward find a coach that will hold you accountable, who specializes in your niche, and who is not a friend, who can be objective.

We'd love to hear what do you do to overcome procrastination, email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss why artists are so closed off and why they won't show off their art or take on apprentices. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

  • Every artist takes on a subject or approaches art and art business differently because they are different. So is there really competition among apprentices?
  • Are interns the new apprentices?
  • Direct interaction cannot be replaced with a video. For a real internship or apprenticeship, you need to have a direct discussion.
  • What about coaching? Coaching is more for growing beyond what you are right now.
  • Quote "Our generation monetized the crap out of everything."
  • If you want to hire an intern or apprentice, you need to review your state labor laws.
  • We prefer to use FreeUp or Fivvr to handle the jobs we don't want to do.
  • Are we standoff because we don't want to be judged or should you be open about your process and the evolution of the piece?

What are your thoughts on all of this? Are you closed off or consider your process part of the creative journey you want to share, email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie have a very special guest with them, Kiffanie Stahle J.D. to chat with us about what to do when you get a copycat and so much more!!

AS AN FYI - We strive for great audio, but sometimes tech doesn't want to work as well as we desire. In this recording, we had an occasional slow bandwidth, regardless of this occasional issue, we hope you find this fabulous and valuable, and we appreciate your patience.

If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

    • Legal remedies are for them to stop, give a retroactive royalty license, or pay you money.
    • There will be the mental, emotional, and potentially creative blocks that can come along with these situations.
    • Never keep your work offline out of fear of copycats.
    • To protect yourself:
      • Register with U.S. Copyright office BEFORE a copycat strikes. This will then make the offender pay for attorney fees.
      • Register BEFORE first publication.
    • What to consider for Surface Pattern Design as derivative work.
    • When to submit a DMCA takedown notice and who to submit it to.
    • CASE Act small claims copycat court releases on 6/25/2022.
    • Kiffanie addresses when is it worth engaging an attorney about a copycat.
    • NFTs' role with a copycat falls more in line with an exclusive license. This is open for issues and a whole other discussion we hope to address in the future.
    • What should mural artists consider with their copyrights - was it a "tricky work for hire". Really evaluate the agreement to see what you gave them permission to do.
    • For more legal questions check out The Artist Courtyard Membership Community.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss the rising shipping costs with Print on Demand and what they do to account for it! If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

    • We are increasing the cost to account for the increased pricing we are experiencing.
    • Art is a luxury item, so the target market isn't as susceptible to the increased prices.
    • As artists, you need to be smart business entrepreneurs and not absorb the costs.
    • It would be best if you did not profit from shipping.

Key talking points:

  • How important are titles to your artwork?
    • It depends if it is about a story, or for commercial purposes.
    • It also depends if you are focused on SEO (search engine optimization).
    • It also helps with inventory
  • Why are artists so underpaid?
    • "Exposure"
    • Royalties range from 2- 8%, and if you have an agent they take 10-15%
    • 1) Artists are doing it to themselves
      • we aren't negotiating or pricing their artwork to reflect their skill and experience level.
      • they aren't doing the research in the marketplace
    • 2) there is not a natural selection to weed out the ones that aren't necessarily going to be a professional.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss Stephanie's answer a listener question "what was the best piece of advice" and then we added "what was the worst piece of advice"! If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

    • Stephanie's best advice she received was to use her cell phone to convert the image to black and white to see the values better. - Another app is called "Grid Painter" which helps you see black and white and reduces the number of values
    • Julie's best advice received was "People buy your joy" by Lila Rodgers.
    • Rachel's best advice from Jennifer Redstreake was "paint what you see" because everyone sees things differently.
    • Worst Advice:
      • Stephanie's someone said to buy the cheapest paint because you'll over paint. Instead buy good paint like Williamsburg Paint, Old Holland, and Gamblin, because it is high-quality paint, Polychromos, Prisma colors. The same applies for the other brands.
      • Julie's bad advice that she received was "just put it out there". Instead of just putting it out there, Julie only posts things she doesn't have any reservations about - she only posts what she's proud of.
        • Good enough for everyone else is not good enough for you.
        • Do you pull off pieces that you are no longer proud of? Julie doesn't because it is too difficult to do it. Pulled stuff from my website - yes.
      • Rachel's worst piece of advice was to send the Star Wars people images of her artwork to see if they would allow her to sell them.
    • What do you do with archived/old pieces that you aren't proud of?
      • Stephanie and Julie - start fresh. The old pieces showed where we were and were lessons learned.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss Stephanie's recent sabbaticals - what she does, how a sabbitcial looks, how a sabbitcial helps you reset and some tips on how to grab that time for yourself! If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

    • For Stephanie she now takes every 7 weeks off for 7 days to refill her cup(spirit, sense of self).
    • During the sabbatical, Stephanie does things that are for her and not serve other people.
    • The unexpected result is that Stephanie began remembering what SHE enjoys and rediscovering the things that brought her relaxation and joy.
    • We need to take more time for ourselves, especially women who are so often serving others, to become a better version of ourselves.
    • Remember that when you do take time for yourself, you are showing your daughters this is ok and healthy for your self-health.
    • Tips for getting the kids to comply with mom's need to recharge.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss how they've noticed some artists are charging ridiculous pricing for courses. If you have a question you'd like us to discuss feel free to email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

  • Are artists trying to take advantage of artists with the pricing structure of the courses? Charging $1500 for a 6-week course is more than what you'd pay for a college-level focused course.
  • In-depth courses should have pre-requisites to ensure that everyone within the course has the same level of experience.
  • We kind of get fired up about everyone taking advantage of artists.
  • To find the success you need from these courses you need the self-discipline to get something out of the course.
  • Copyrighting for content go to Jim Edwards's book Copyrighting Secrets. and his software is trafficsecretsscripts.com
  • Emails should be short and sweet...Headline is the #1 thing to focus on. Use this headline analyzer to help with your open rate.
  • You cannot take a 6-week course and expect to be successful.
  • Keep in mind that these course providers are only showcasing their top 1%...
  • Do the research on the teachers that are selling the course to evaluate whether they are worth it. Look at LinkedIn, their shops, Google them, their Facebook, etc.
  • Art classes and business classes from artists should be the same price rather than devaluing their art side.
  • Put your courses at a realistic price.
  • Artists need to stop devaluing their art courses.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss how they get into the right frame of mind to create and create something outside of your norm. I bet you'll resonate and if you have additional ways we want to hear! Email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

  • having a personal goal of creating every day forced Julie to just do and not think.
  • don't focus on the end result is perfect, but just create for the sake of creating.
  • Julie finds it more freeing to use loose-leaf paper instead of part of a book.
  • remember that some of your artwork is for you and not for sharing - or maybe not sharing at this time.
  • do something that is not part of your norm - maybe a new medium, go to a new place etc...

The basic rules are:

  1. Create something every day

  2. Have zero expectations of what it will be

  3. Use looseleaf paper

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss whether they research their next art piece or project - and the answer was a resounding yes! But listen to what they do - I bet you'll resonate and if you have additional ways we want to hear! Email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Key talking points:

  • there is a lot of research that goes into creating an imaginative, realistic piece.
  • research on where to photograph artwork, how to modify to make it showcase the subject that may get skewed in the lense
  • the research should be accounted for in pricing your artwork
  • How do you keep your research: OneNote, Noteshelf
  • For Stephanie, she gets into analysis, paralysis - so she does best with just starting.

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss how to organize your electronic files - why it is needed and some ideas....get a pen and paper for this one!

Key talking points:

  • Organizing our electronic files is also a BIG topic of organization/reorganization.
    • Jules uses OneDrive
    • Rachel uses iDrive
    • Stephanie uses Google Drive, iCloud,
    • 3-2-1 rule is 3: Create one primary backup and two copies of your data. 2: Save your backups to two different types of media. 1: Keep at least one backup file offsite.

10 Tips to Keep Your Electronic Files Organized During this conversation, we review and discuss the article "10 File Management Tips to Keep Your Electronic Files Organized" article by Susan Ward of "The Balance Small Business" website. Be prepared to giggle at how nutty we are!

  1. Backup your files regularly

  2. 3-2-1 rule is 3: Create one primary backup and two copies of your data. 2: Save your backups to two different types of media. 1: Keep at least one backup file offsite.

  3. Cull your files regularly - after Rachel explains what "cull" means - we discuss what files we can remove or archive files. Artists - do not delete reference images.

  4. Order your files for your convenience.

  5. File as you go. Name things properly and apply keywords (Adobe Bridge is a fabulous tool to use)

  6. Be specific in your file naming. Be sure to document HOW you are going to name your files.

  7. Follow the naming conventions. Be sure to document HOW you are going to name your files.

  8. Nest your folders (example: Artwork and subfolder Collection Title/Subject) - we start to nerd out a bit at this point :) 03_Marketing - 03a_Pitches, 03b_Instagram, etc...

  9. Create Folders in a logical structure.

  10. Another example:

    • 2021_Pet Portrait
        • Client Name_Pet Name
        • Reference Image
        • Finished Image
        • Social Media Images
    • 2021_People Portrait
      • Client Name_Subject Name
        • Reference Image
        • Finished Image
        • Social Media Images
  11. Make sure you document the structure that you will have in place. Love the SOPs!

  12. Use the default installation folder drive

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss what we do when we have unrealistic expectations

Key talking points:

  • Are we living in an age of "over-hypeness"? - YES!
  • If it sounds too good to be true - it is.
  • Look for opinions from people you trust
  • Be you. Know your audience, know that you are enough.
  • Know that the "success" stories are just 1% of the actual viewpoint.
  • Realize that your journey is not the same as someone else's. And along with that,
  • Look at your competitors or people you love and see what they are doing or working for them and see if there is a technical aspect you can apply in YOUR voice.
  • Talk with people who are in the same boat as you.

How do you handle unrealistic expectations? If you do the Roadmap of artwork progression project or #positivepainter - share it with us, email us at hello@artistssoar.com

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss what we do to stay positive.

Key talking points:

  • acknowledge the negative, ignoring it will cause it to fester
  • once you acknowledge the negative, then find the action that is needed to move forward
  • remove yourself from the negative people - even it is an email, delete it.
  • evaluate the painful situations to figure out the lessons that you are to learn to move forward.
  • set realistic expectations...you are not that person you are comparing yourself to.
  • This is your journey.
  • It is ok to change your path.

What do we do to stay centered and positive:

  • do our hobbies, prayer, meditation, create a different atmosphere
  • be still, get grounded, get outside and be still, write down your negative thoughts and burn the papers (safely)
  • listen to Insight Timer to help reset your mindset

Jules, Rachel, and Stephanie discuss lessons learned with doing business with friends and relatives..

Jules and Rachel created a website for a friend...that went south real quick...

Stephanie created a commission for a friend and the friend took advantage and Stephanie took a hard stance of being done...

Lessons learned:

  • Don't turn over the deliverable until you have payment
  • Always trust your gut!
  • Look for a win-win agreement
  • Know your limits
  • Outline every detail in writing

Red Flags to look for:

  • Your gut is questioning the situation
  • They request too many changes upfront or have too many "visions" of what it should be
  • The expectations change

Strategies to avoid the job:

  • Price yourself out of the job
  • Don't follow up

Jules, Stephanie, and Rachel talk over art shows and time-wasters for this year and how to stay more focus and on target.

While we had some pains, we did have lessons learned that will helpfully help you.  Here are our tips:

  1. Is it a reputable organization. Make sure who you are working with is a reputable company and review its competitors.  Julie had a bad experience but the Licensing Expo was a great one.

  2. Know your goals. Evaluate what your future looks like to pick the right things to do for you.

  3. Evaluate the results. Evaluate anything new you try; and see what works and what doesn't work, then adjust.

  4. Focus on 1 thing at a time.
