In this special episode, Guy and Elesa are ready to talk about a huge, surprising announcement: Southern Jewelry News (SJN) has new ownership!

Guy reveals that Chris Smith and Bill Newnam, the former owners, have sold Southern Jewelry News... to him! This transition marks the first major change since SJN began printing monthly in 1988. After over 35 years and 25 years of running the publication, Bill and Chris were ready to retire. Elesa, who has worked with the former owners for three decades, enthusiastically endorses Guy, calling him the "perfect person to take over the rain". Guy will be working alongside Elesa and Martha Oswald to continue the legacy of the longest-running and most respected jewelry publication.

Guy reflects on the incredible achievement built by Bill, Chris, Elesa, and Martha. He has always seen SJN as a "gold mine", and he is honored to take on this big undertaking with his JSM team, despite having no prior publishing experience.

The team addresses a major change: due to the challenging high costs of paper and postage, Southern Jewelry News and Mid-America Jewelry News (MAJN) will no longer be printed monthly. They plan to publish only a few print issues each year, possibly one every quarter, mainly for trade shows. However, Guy is committed to maintaining the "heart and soul" and respected content of SJN while implementing exciting new features and improvements online by the beginning of January.

Join Elesa and Guy as they celebrate the 100th episode of the podcast and look forward to improving the website, the podcast format, and bringing more value to the industry.

The future is bright, and change is good! Don't miss this must-listen episode to hear all about the transition and the exciting future of SJN!

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we sit down with the remarkable Todd Malcolm of Malcolm Jewelers in Moline, Illinois. A third-generation jeweler with more than 39 years of experience, Todd carries forward an 80+ year family legacy that began with his grandfather in 1941. From their roots in Philadelphia to building one of the Quad Cities' most trusted jewelry names, Malcolm Jewelers has stood as a symbol of craftsmanship, family, and community.

Todd shares how he boldly transformed the business in 2003 from a traditional 3,000-square-foot full-scale jewelry store into a specialized, by-appointment-only jeweler. This shift not only allowed him to reduce overhead but also gave him the freedom to connect personally with clients and focus on what he does best: custom jewelry design, restoration, and one-of-a-kind creations. His celebrated Stories from the Heart Collection—inspired by love, family, faith, and personal milestones—represents both his artistry and his dedication to creating meaningful jewelry that tells stories across generations.

We explore the challenges of navigating changing economies, evolving consumer habits, and the shift from retail to wholesale. Todd shares one of his most meaningful successes—creating his first piece, "In Mother's Arms", after losing his brother to cancer. The pendant raised $8,000 for Gilda's Club and touched countless lives, including a woman who wore hers until her granddaughter's remission. This heartfelt beginning helped launch his Stories from the Heart Collection. He also offers invaluable advice for young jewelers: embrace education through Gemological Institute of America (GIA), gain hands-on experience in independent jewelry stores, and get involved in your local community.

This conversation is filled with wisdom, legacy, and inspiration. Todd's journey proves that jewelry is more than metal and stones—it's about meaning, connection, and memories. Tune in now and discover why Malcolm Jewelers and Todd's story are truly gems worth celebrating!

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, brought to you by Southern Jewelry News and Jewelry Store Marketers, host Guy welcomes Chuck Keohler of Anthony’s Jewelers and special guest Chuck Frey of Charles Frey and Company. With more than 40 years of experience, Chuck Frey specializes in helping jewelers navigate major business transitions—from liquidations and stock reduction events to retirement, relocation, or passing the store to a successor.

While many think of liquidations as the end of the road, Frey explains that transitions don’t always mean closure. For some stores, it’s about continuing under new ownership—whether that’s a family member, long-time employee, or an outside buyer. His company helps jewelers determine realistic purchase prices, design effective transition sales, and generate the cash flow needed to support the process.

Frey also highlights the importance of goodwill and reputation, noting that buyers are often attracted not just to inventory but also to the community ties a store has built. He shares strategies such as advertising “retiring, seeking buyer” events, which create urgency while opening doors for potential new owners.

Packed with practical insights, this conversation explores succession planning, financial realities, and creative solutions for jewelers preparing for change. Whether you’re considering retirement or seeking to sell, this episode provides valuable tools for ensuring a smooth transition and preserving your store’s legacy.

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, recorded live at the Atlanta Jewelry Show, host Guy welcomes Melissa Mor, founder of Mrs. Push. Melissa shares the story behind her business, which focuses on “push presents”—special gifts given to moms after childbirth or to celebrate motherhood. While the tradition has existed for years, it has only recently become a widely recognized and celebrated category.

Melissa explains how Mrs. Push curates primarily jewelry pieces from female- and mom-owned brands. Popular selections include stackable birthstone bands, charms that can be added with each child, and mother-daughter bracelets that create lasting connections. These pieces go beyond jewelry—they become symbols of love, family, and milestones worth remembering.

She also highlights the importance of storytelling in retail. Customers often share personal journeys when choosing a piece, whether it’s a dad shopping for his partner’s first child or a mom honoring children already grown. These stories give jewelry deeper meaning and transform gifts into lifelong keepsakes.

Melissa’s passion shows through as she talks about growing the business, serving a niche audience, and creating jewelry that resonates with moms of all ages. This episode offers insight into how focusing on a unique market can lead to both business success and emotional impact, reminding us that meaningful jewelry is always tied to meaningful moments.

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast, recorded live at the Atlanta Jewelry Show, hosts Guy and Elesa sit down with longtime jeweler and industry supporter Evan Deutsch of Evan James Ltd. Diamond Jewelers & Goldsmiths. Having attended the show for more than 30 years, Evan offers a rare perspective on what makes this event a cornerstone of the jewelry community.

Evan explains why the Atlanta Jewelry Show continues to thrive as one of the last nonprofit jewelry shows in the nation. He highlights its unique advantages—from affordable hotels and authentic Southern hospitality to the meaningful networking opportunities that larger, corporate-run shows simply can’t match. For Evan, the value lies not just in the deals made, but in the trust and personal connections built over decades.

Listeners will hear Evan’s candid “mic-drop moments” on how the show remains successful despite rising costs and industry consolidation. He even shares why he often invests more here than in Las Vegas or New York, crediting the supportive environment created by both vendors and show staff.

Beyond the business side, Evan also captures the vibrant culture that surrounds the show: $10 hot lunches, black-tie galas, and the chance to catch a Braves game just across the street. It’s a blend of professionalism, hospitality, and fun that keeps him—and many others—coming back year after year.

This conversation is a celebration of community, connection, and the enduring spirit of the jewelry industry.

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we sit down with Aleah Arundale, diamond wholesaler, educator, and the dynamic founder of Jewelers Helping Jewelers (JHJ). Known for her bold personality, electric blue hair, and unwavering commitment to helping others, Aleah opens up about the evolution of JHJ and how the group's spin-off, the JHJ Crime Network, has become a vital tool in protecting independent jewelers across the country.

Aleah shares how her journey started with a deep love for the industry and a desire to connect more authentically with other jewelers. What began as a few Facebook posts quickly grew into a thriving online community where jewelers share everything, from pricing advice and inventory questions to real-time alerts about suspicious buyers and criminal activity. She talks candidly about the heartbreaking stories that motivated her to take action, and the messages she’s received from store owners who were able to stop scams or avoid theft thanks to her group’s tips.

But Aleah’s passion doesn’t stop at jewelry. She talks about running a donation center out of her home for families in need, transforming her yard into a whimsical fairy garden for local kids, and organizing global jewelry vacations, from Tahiti to Italy, and soon, Mexico. These adventures bring together industry professionals not just to network, but to truly bond, share knowledge, and spark new ideas in beautiful destinations.

We also explore how jewelers can diversify their businesses through high-value asset lending, what Aleah calls “executive loans.” She believes that pawnbroking, when done right, offers a dignified and profitable way to serve customers in need, while also adding a stable revenue stream to any retail operation.

Aleah encourages every jeweler to lean into what makes them different, whether that’s through style, a unique hobby, or simply being real with customers. In a world full of sameness, standing out isn’t a liability; it’s your greatest strength.

This episode is packed with actionable tips, heartfelt stories, and powerful reminders about the profound impact one person can have on an entire industry. Tune in to hear Aleah Arundale’s story and walk away with new inspiration for building a jewelry business that’s bold, authentic, and community-driven.

How does someone go from sketching ideas in a notebook to becoming a custom jeweler known for transforming her clients’ wildest ideas into wearable works of art?

In this episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Jewelry Podcast, we welcome Carter Eve, founder of Carter Eve Jewelry, as she shares the deeply personal story behind her journey into the world of fine jewelry. It all began in 2008 while living in New York. As a student, Carter found herself returning again and again to a small jewelry store—not to shop, but to observe. Fascinated by the goldsmiths carving wax rings in the back room, she asked endless questions until one of the jewelers finally told her, “You really should consider doing this yourself.” That nudge led her to turn a passing fascination into a full-time passion—and eventually, a business.

Since launching her brand in 2013, Carter has blended old-school craftsmanship with cutting-edge techniques. She apprenticed under an 85-year-old master jeweler who taught her everything from intake to customer care the traditional way—skills she still uses today, even as she experiments with 3D modeling and tech-forward design. Her process is fueled by the creative visions of her clients, whom she calls her greatest teachers. Every project pushes her skills further, making room for innovation while staying grounded in timeless artistry.

In this candid conversation, Carter opens up about the mistakes that shaped her—like the ring she poured her heart into, only to melt it down when it didn’t turn out right. She also talks about the importance of trust in the jeweler-client relationship, the evolving tastes of younger generations, and how she uses sketchbooks to mine ideas and spark new creations.

Beyond the bench, Carter Eve serves on the board of the Women’s Jewelry Association (Los Angeles chapter), hosts pop-ups, and is exploring retail partnerships to expand her presence. She also shares some fun, off-the-cuff moments—like imagining what she’d hide inside a ring with a secret compartment, and how she strategically “left behind” detailed ring sketches for her partner to find when it came time for her own engagement.

Whether you're a new designer, a jewelry lover, or someone dreaming of turning creativity into a career, this episode is packed with hard-earned wisdom, warmth, and practical advice from someone who’s carved her path, quite literally, from wax to gold.

Episode 73 is packed with inspiration, practical advice, and heartfelt narratives that highlight the multifaceted nature of the industry. It begins with a lighthearted conversation about jewelry selection. While some focus on technical aspects like color, cut, and clarity, others embrace a simpler philosophy: if a piece of jewelry sparks joy, it’s the right choice.

Mastering Leadership in the Jewelry Business Leadership is a recurring theme throughout the episode, as industry professionals share their experiences in cultivating strong teams and driving business success. The discussion explores how leadership is not something absorbed through osmosis but a skill that can be learned, honed, and applied.

The podcast also highlights how stellar repair services can become a trust-building foundation for jewelers. By dedicating time and effort to seemingly small tasks, like customizing a watchband or repairing sentimental items, jewelers build deep connections with their customers.

Next, this episode shares inspiring tales of innovation and craftsmanship. One jeweler recounts their transition from traditional wax carving to adopting CAD technology, a shift that was both daunting and transformative. The challenges of learning a new system were outweighed by the creative possibilities it unlocked, enabling the jeweler to produce stunning designs with precision.

Community Involvement Community engagement takes center stage as jewelers discuss their efforts to give back. One standout initiative is a jewelry design contest for students, encouraging creativity and confidence among participants. With winners selected across elementary, middle, and high school categories, this annual event combines art, math, and storytelling, fostering valuable skills and inspiring the next generation.

The Power of Digital Marketing and Financing Options Modern marketing strategies and financing options play a significant role in today’s jewelry business. From targeted social media campaigns to 60-month 0% financing offers, these tools help businesses attract and retain customers.

Jewelers share success stories about how financing transformed hesitant window-shoppers into buyers, making luxury jewelry more accessible. The discussion also emphasizes the importance of thoughtful promotion—using financing as a supportive tool rather than a high-pressure sales tactic.

Celebrating Milestones A jeweler celebrating 70 years in business shares the emotional journey of preparing to pass the torch to a new generation. The story captures the essence of what it means to build something meaningful and ensure its continuity.

The podcast also explores the unique camaraderie among jewelers, where shared experiences and mutual support create a sense of belonging. The episode closes with a powerful message: success comes from being invested in people, sharing stories, and treating every interaction as an opportunity to build trust and create joy.

Why This Episode Matters This episode offers actionable insights and heartwarming anecdotes that resonate deeply whether you’re a seasoned professional or a newcomer.

Discover how the jewelry industry continues to innovate, adapt, and thrive while staying true to its roots. Don’t miss this opportunity to gain fresh perspectives and practical tips from those who have dedicated their lives to the art and business of jewelry.

Joining us in this special episode of Chatting with Chuck is Jim Imhof, the Sales Director for Glock Watches. He will share the extraordinary fusion of two worlds you might never have imagined—the world of firearms and watches.

Jim brings a wealth of experience, having spent 45 years in the watch business, including stints with brands like Boulevard, Citizen, and Seiko. For the past decade, he’s been an integral part of Bering Watches, a company with a 14-year history.

In this episode, we discuss the remarkable history of Bering Watches, their commitment to quality, and the influence of their owner, Michael Witt. You’ll discover that Glock’s entry into watch manufacturing is a dedication to upholding Glock’s rigorous standards, just as they do with their firearms. They’re designed to withstand wear and tear, which makes them a smart choice for those who demand the best.

Initially, Bering Watches primarily catered to a female audience, but they have expanded their offerings and have 700 active accounts in the US.

So, how did Bering Watches and Glock Watches come together? The Glock family, with its roots in the jewelry business, sought to create special project watches. When the task proved challenging, Michael Witt was called upon for his expertise, and thus, the partnership began.

Glock watches offer a range of movements, including Swiss-made Rhonda movements, Seiko automatic movements, and solar movements.

Jim reveals that all these Glock watches are set to hit the market soon, and it already has a substantial network of accounts lined up, including independent owner-operators.

If you’re interested in exploring the opportunity to become a prospective retailer, sales representative, or ambassador, tune in now and discover more about Glock Watches from Jim Imhof here.

Welcome to Pearls of Wisdom! In this episode of “Chatting with Chuck,” our special guest, Shelia Bayes of Gem + Jewel, will share her journey in the jewelry industry and what she has accomplished so far to help other jewelers.

Her first step in the industry began in Lexington, Kentucky, where she worked for a jewelry business while attending the University of Kentucky. After nearly a decade of experience, she boldly opened her store, and this year marks her impressive 30th anniversary! With no prior family background in the industry, her story is indeed an inspiration to all aspiring jewelers.

Her passion for connecting with people and celebrating life’s special moments through jewelry is evident in her incredible journey. She’s witnessed the industry’s evolution from green books and landline phones to the digital age of e-commerce.

Speaking of e-commerce, Sheila witnessed how many jewelers struggle with building and maintaining online stores and was determined to change that. In a groundbreaking move, she founded Gem + Jewel in 2018, an award-winning e-commerce aggregator. This platform provides solutions for those struggling with online sales intricacies. It makes e-commerce more accessible for retailers, vendors, and consumers.

What’s even more exciting is the accessibility of this platform to Jewelers Mutual Insurance policyholders. For a mere $69 a month, retailers can start their e-commerce business without the hefty upfront costs, with the platform taking a modest 10% commission only when a sale is made. If you think that’s impressive, wait until you hear more from Sheila Bayes .

Tune in now and don’t miss this episode to gain invaluable insights into jewelry and e-commerce. Join us as we Chat with Chuck and Shelia Bayes of Gem + Jewel.

Welcome to Pearls of Wisdom Podcast. In this episode of “Chatting with Chuck,” we have the pleasure of introducing you to Chris Snowden, the proud owner of Snowden Jewelers from Wilmington, NC, and Brenda Gamba from the Jewelers Board of Trade.

Chris is a passionate expert with over three decades of experience. He, alongside his father, founded Snowden Jewelers 33 years ago, where you can find the highest quality of jewelry. Chris has seen it all, from being a twelve-year-old bench jeweler to running the show today.

We first take a trip down memory lane as he reminisces about the fun rib cook-off competition at the Ten Carat Club’s initiation (a unique jewelers’ group for those not quite in the 24 Carat Club).

Who won the contest? Well, you’ll have to listen to that story to find out.

But it’s not only about barbecue—we also talk about the ins and outs of this industry. But don’t let Chris’ casual demeanor fool you—beneath that friendly smile lies a wealth of knowledge about gems, diamonds, and everything in between.

From the latest trends in lab-grown diamonds to the dynamic market, Chris has something valuable to share, like how the jewelry industry is adapting to meet the diverse needs of its customers. And as a reminder to everyone, keep everything real and offer practical insights rather than lofty marketing jargon.

This episode is filled with laughter, industry chatter, and the essence of the show itself— building connections and exploring new opportunities in the jewelry industry. Stay tuned, and don’t miss out!

He emphasizes the importance of inheriting both the good and the bad when taking over a long-standing business and his commitment to changing the store’s perception. Working closely with marketing expert Josh, they shattered the notion of exclusivity and opened their doors to all budgets and tastes.

One standout campaign they launched was “Size Doesn’t Matter. She Does,” conveying their commitment to serving everyone. The store’s excellent service and client-focused approach gained numerous five-star reviews.

John also discusses “Blingfest,” a fun and engaging event that helped them connect with a broader audience through social media. He advises jewelry store owners to find a marketing partner who understands their vision and gives campaigns time to mature.

John highlights the power of video content, even for those new to it. Authenticity matters more than perfection; starting small with informative videos can make a big impact.

Welcome to another episode of the Pearls of Wisdom Podcast! I’m thrilled to introduce our guest for today, Christy Davidson, an RDI Diamond expert with an impressive 23 years of experience in the retail jewelry industry.

Get ready for an exciting discussion as Christy tells us about the exclusive “Rare and Forever Natural Diamonds” program by RDI. This program sets RDI apart by carefully screening rough diamonds for any BGM hues before the faceting and cutting. The result? Stunning diamonds that sparkle brilliantly without any color hindrance.

But that’s not all! RDI takes it further by employing AI technology to grade their diamonds. This advanced intelligent grading system accurately and precisely grades each diamond, making it the most advanced grading system available. And here’s the fascinating part: the more diamonds the system grades, the better it becomes, continuously improving its accuracy.

Now, let’s talk about the qualities of the Rare and Forever Natural Diamonds. RDI offers a wide range of options, from I1 clarity up to VVS clarity and from K color all the way up to D color.

While the price may be around 3% higher than typical GIA stones or other graded diamonds, RDI believes in empowering jewelers to decide where they want to be in terms of pricing and competitiveness.

During our conversation, Christy also recounted when she presented a J-colored diamond from RDI’s collection to jewelers without mentioning its color or clarity. Most of them mistook it for a G or H color diamond! This is a testament to the exceptional quality of RDI’s diamonds. Their J-color diamonds radiate brightness and beauty without any noticeable yellow hue, surprising even experienced professionals.

So, if you’re searching for exquisite, natural diamonds that deliver unparalleled sparkle and beauty, RDI Diamonds and their Rare and Forever Natural Diamonds program are here for you. Stay tuned as we explore this topic and get your own diamond journey started!

Happy to see you here again at the Pearls of Wisdom podcast. In this episode, Chuck and I were joined by Ross Wesdorp from Jewel-Craft Inc.

Now, Ross and I have a bit of history—we’ve been competitors for over two decades! But hey, as they say, keep your friends close and your competition closer. And today, we’re happy to have him on board.

As a special guest in this episode, Ross talks about Jewel-Craft Inc, a family-owned and operated business that has been around since 1947. They are a one-stop shop for retail toy stores, helping with work that some stores don’t have time to do or don’t have the equipment for.

Ross shares they have approximately 270 people working for the trade, around 200 being bench jewelers or polishers. The remaining employees do data entry, quality control, and other related tasks. Talk about teamwork!

We also discovered that Jewel-Craft Inc differs in its approach by breaking down its processes into specific tasks assigned to individuals. For example, stone setters only cut seeds, bright cut, and set stones. They then pass the piece to the next person who polishes the piece. This approach allows for a quality check at each process stage, ensuring a high-quality result.

Ross also discusses the number of jobs they do in a month, around 40 to 50,000! He explains that they are cautious with the work, checking each job to ensure everything runs smoothly. Ross talks about some challenges they face, such as lost jobs, which are infrequent but do happen.

This episode provides priceless insights into the world of jewelry-making, specifically the work done by trade shops. Ross’s knowledge and experience in the industry make this a must-listen for everyone who wants to learn about the industry’s inner workings. If you’re curious where to find Jewelry-Craft Inc, tune in to this episode.

Welcome to the Pearls of Wisdom jewelry podcast! I’m thrilled to introduce our guest for today’s episode. We are honored to speak with Doris Butler, a second-generation jeweler from Butler Diamonds in Selma, Alabama.

Have you heard about her family store, Butler Diamonds? It has a long-standing history and was recently featured in the Southern Jewelry News. Doris grew up in that jewelry store and has been passionate about the business since childhood.

Can you believe she started working there at just 13 years old? She spent every summer and Christmas break in the store throughout high school and college. Everything she knew about the business was taught to her by her father.

Speaking of her father, he accidentally bought the store, having previously worked in radio. But with his mentorship and guidance, Doris has succeeded in the industry and even downsized her store to a smaller but more profitable location in 2017. She’s now making a steady income and providing exceptional customer service without worrying about employees giving false information.

During our conversation, Doris shares some great advice on succession planning, investing in oneself, and downsizing a business. She credits the Retail Jewelers Organization (RJO) with helping her to succeed in her business. Welcome to another episode of Pearls of Wisdom. Get ready to learn insightful financial advice from Senior Wealth Advisor, John Bruggemann. While our discussion is centered around the jewelry industry, his advice applies to individuals across all sectors—so be sure not to miss out!

John starts by introducing Advisors Capital Management, a family-owned independent registered investment advisor. He explains his fiduciary duty to act in the best interest of his clients and the firm’s policy of not selling commissionable products.

The conversation then moves to how the market performed in 2022, with John explaining how inflation caused a significant downturn in the stock and bond markets. He advises listeners to keep a cash reserve and reduce dependence on stocks for income.

He also reminds us that the market always recovers from downturns and advises business owners to ensure they have the right retirement plan to maximize benefits under the current IRS rules.

John also shares his expertise on the importance of regular financial check-ins. He recommends reviewing finances at least once a year to ensure they are headed in the right direction. He emphasizes the need to model any changes made in the analysis and suggests that one can afford to take more risks when the macroeconomic backdrop is favorable.

We also touch on the cyclical nature of the jewelry industry, with John suggesting smaller businesses require financial advice more so than larger businesses. He also stresses the importance of treating all clients equally and not differentiating between them based on their fees.

As a whole, John’s advice is relevant not just to jewelers but also to business owners and employees looking to secure their financial futures.

But that’s not all. There’s so much going on in this episode; the only way to fully experience it is to tune in and discover more for yourself!

Chuck is a renowned writer for Southern Jewelry News and Mid-America Jewelry News. He has an associate degree in applied science in jewelry technology and gemological certification under his belt. Talk about multi-talented!

In this fun and entertaining episode, we talk with Sebas from INOX Jewelry about the new branding campaign which is a collaborative effort between INOX and Jewelry Store Marketers that focuses on getting people to remember INOX with one simple word, BRO!

The INOX Jewelry collection, as explained by Sebas, has wide appeal because of the number of designs and its affordable price that most guys really like. On occasion when someone finds a piece that catches their eye, the biggest compliment Sebas could hope for is an exuberant "BRO!" This single word said with enthusiasm, means this is so cool and I want it. This simple concept which boils down to a simple word is the foundation of the #sayBro branding campaign.

This is the first consumer branding campaign ever done for INOX Jewelry and the concept, as shown in this episode, promises to be amusing and unforgettable. Look for the #sayBro campaign and everything about the BRO culture in all marketing channels in the coming months.

"If you don't have a men's jewelry collection in your store, wake up Bro!" eloquently said by Elesa Dillon.

Watch how Barbara Innamorati, Founder and President of Évocateur, a luxury jewelry company, shifted from being in the world of corporate finance to heading an artisan jewelry company even without any experience in the jewelry industry

Barbara tells Guy of Jewelry Store Marketers and Elesa of Southern Jewelry News the story of how she became fascinated with and passionate about gold leaf, which she has seen years ago in a painting, and how her team transforms any design into something magical and extraordinary.

After years of research, trial and error, and several challenges, Barbara and her team have perfected the techniques of adapting 22K gold leaf into jewelry designs to create hand-gilded and burnished works of art in cuffs, bangles, earrings, necklaces, and rings.

Watch how Évocateur has created a new and different category in the jewelry industry which according to Barbara was not intentional but just happened.

Évocateur’s collection of gold leaf jewelry is not plated. Neither are they fine jewelry. Rather, they are something in-between.

Barbara goes on to take Guy and Elesa on a virtual tour of her studio in Westport, Connecticut to show how she and her team of skilled artisans individually handcrafted each piece in 22k gold leaf and sterling silver leaf. Barbara says gold leaf is as thin as a butterfly’s wing and very difficult to work with, and takes about 6 to 7 days to complete one piece of jewelry.

She emphasizes that all her gold leaf-based pieces of jewelry are handcrafted in this studio proudly saying they are made in the USA.

Jewelry store owners love Évocateur’s jewelry collection because they bring color to their stores which consist mostly of whites and yellows (silver and gold).

"Diamond" Bill Warren shares so many pearls of wisdom in the podcast that can guide jewelry stores to success. One of the key tips he shares is to do events, but you need to ensure you start promoting 30 days before the event. Also, use all of the marketing avenues to invite your customers. Create a Facebook Event Page, send out flyers and emails, and even pick up the phone to call and text your best customers. Position your event for success by taking every opportunity to let your customer know why they should come.

Beyond events, Bill talks about how jewelry stores need to be omnipresent when it comes to marketing. We need to go beyond the old-school marketing avenues we've used for years. Now, we need to get on social media, use email marketing, and all aspects of marketing. Most importantly, CONSISTENCY is a major factor in marketing. You can't just try it for a week and say that it didn't work. You need to keep at it for the long haul.

Bill, a successful jewelry store owner himself, is passionate about helping jewelers gain the knowledge and guidance to grow a successful jewelry business. Make sure to learn more about Bill and the resources he offers on his website. Pearls of Wisdom Podcast features Chuck Koehler, owner of Anthony Jewelers in Tennessee, and CMK Co (a wholesale trade shop that specializes in custom jewelry and repair services to the jewelry industry nationwide. Chuck also started Fingerprint Jewelry which does touch impressions.

Chuck focuses his discussion on what is going on in the jewelry business today with his tagline – “From the Yellow Pages to Podcasts and Websites”.

Before business owners needed to discuss with the rep the layout of a yellow page ad. Now we talk about what to discuss in a podcast.

Jewelry stores used to get customers from the yellow pages and needed to have a good brick-and-mortar store location.

Today, Chuck advises jewelry store owners to have an online presence so that wherever they are, their customers will find them.

As social media is a crowded space, Chuck says to take a closer look at the smaller social media platforms.

Much of the discussion though focuses on the topic of lab-grown diamonds. Either they sell them or do not sell them.

The jewelry industry, Chuck says, is divided on this issue. Chuck walks us through the definition of lab-grown diamonds and does an intensive discussion on the difference between natural diamonds and lab-grown diamonds.

He also talks about the take of the new generation jewelers and their prediction that lab-grown diamonds are the next big thing. Chuck emphasizes that jewelers need to make a stand on lab-grown diamonds.

The new generation of jewelers has a different take on lab-grown diamonds

In this Pearls of Wisdom episode, Catherine Pearce and Lisa Gallagher of Valeska Jewelry discuss with Guy Pineda of Jewelry Store Marketer, one of the hottest events of jewelry stores – Facebook Live Selling Shows.

Catherine is a first-generation brick-and-mortar boutique store owner. Lisa on the other hand takes charge of the sales and marketing aspects of the business as well as the technical side of the store’s website and Facebook Live Selling events.

There are many things jewelry store owners can do to increase revenue. Jewelry store owners have had many successes doing Facebook Live Selling shows making it a hot trend today.

Catherine says the future is Online and if brick-and- mortar stores do not follow the trend they will be left in the dust.

Doing Facebook live selling is not as simple as getting in front of the camera and uttering spiels, and showing your products. As Catherine says, there are a lot of things happening before the actual live show. Pre-production takes more time than the live selling itself.

Facebook live selling can give jewelry stores a wider reach, create awareness, and is a good way to interact with customers.

Catherine and Lisa do Facebook Live Selling for one hour every Thursday and have been doing it since December of last year. Listen as they share their experiences, struggles, and challenges on how to put up a live show with amazing production value.

Each of their Facebook live shows gathers a few hundred viewers. But as Catherine says, it is not having the volume of people in your live show but having the right people.

Jim Porterfield has been in the jewelry packaging business for almost 27 years. He started in Hong Kong as a broker and factory agent in 1995. He took orders from factories in China and sold them to main chain stores and manufacturers in the U.S.

A year later, they opened a distribution facility in L.A. and started selling to independent jewelers. Today, his company is one of the major display and packaging suppliers in the jewelry industry.

Jim extensively discusses his revolutionary magnetic displays that can not only make life easier for your staff when entertaining customers but can also help lessen setup and tear-down times from 10 minutes each to about 40 seconds each time.

Jim also shows his innovative jewelry packaging which gives more value to jewelry while helping jewelry store owners make sure they never run out of packaging. He also shows off their patented snap gift wrappers.

All through the discussion, Jim emphasizes the importance of Jewelry Visual Merchandising focusing on the 20-40-40 system to increase sales per square foot of store space.

Jim says everything is about branding and imaging. A jewelry store’s display has to match the jewelry. Jewelry displays should project how customers perceive and expect the jewelry to be.

United Lasers sells laser engraving systems for almost all industries, but the jewelry industry is his favorite. Many people think laser systems are expensive, but the truth is, it is worth the investment when you have this system and learn what you can do with it.

Many jewelers still do hand engraving, which Adam says has a certain charm, but it requires a lot of time to complete. A laser can do in 30 minutes what hand engraving can do in about 10 hours.

Adam discusses the benefits of a laser engraver, emphasizing that it is a workhorse and does not include any consumables. In addition, he stresses that the laser system can engrave more precisely than when done by hand.

The discussion also extensively covers social media platforms and how they can help a business. He emphasizes being social instead of creative, as well as knowing the language of each social media platform.

Adam says that if you have the time, you do not need the money as far as social media content is concerned. Businesses are always trying to compete for attention on social media.

He considers himself a marketing nerd and shares tips on what jewelers should prioritize in digital marketing to grow their business and create a unique customer experience.

After 54 years in RJO, Barton Leddel.

Barton started his business when he got out of the military at 26 and has been coming to the RJO show for 54 years. In the beginning, RJO only had 20 or so members at the time, and now has over 900 members.

Why RJO? Talk to other jewelers about your problems.

Barton says that RJO has done such an amazing job. The most important aspect of joining the group is to connect with other jewelers so you can learn from each other's challenges and problems. The connection is important but the buying is important also.

When Barton started, there were only 10-15 suppliers which are all gone now except for Barton. Barton remembers back to the original members when he joined over 50 years. Barton continues to work at 80 years old

Barton, who is 80 years and working the show by himself, feels he never works because he loves what he does. Starting many years ago in IA, the RJO members have been loyal and really love getting together as the largest buying group in the jewelry industry.

Barton says that many jewelers need help and RJO has done an amazing job in providing that help and resources.

In this episode, we talk with Amber Gustafson and David Baker, recorded live at the recent RJO show in Minneapolis. Amber, the owner of Amber's Designs Fine Jewelry, talks about her 43 years as a bench jeweler and her challenges when she opened her own jewelry store 21 years ago. Amber goes on about the importance of relationships and changing with the times in order to stay connected with her customers.

Don't compete on price! This is one of the main points Amber wants jewelers to learn and implement in their stores. "If they don't trust you, they won't come back to you!" Teach you staff to establish and grow the relationships which will benefit you long-term.

Amber says you will lose if you are not doing social media and utilizing technology in your business. Get a social media manager to handle all of the platforms and constantly reinvent yourself! She advises to get on all of the social platforms including TikTok which is really powerful right now.

As a wax carver, Amber's design vision allows her to see the jewelry in the wax but pays attention to CAD and laser welders to take your abilities to the next step. Any well-rounded jeweler should be able to work with wax, cad, and more.

Key insights from Amber and David.
- Pay your staff what they are worth.
- Quality of life is important for Jewelers!
- Jewelers should make as much as Doctors and Dentists.
- Technology is our biggest challenge.
- Don't give up!

In this episode recorded live at the RJO show in Minneapolis, we talk with Paul Holewa, SJN/MAJN staff writer, about the industry, Minneapolis (his hometown), being different to set your jewelry store apart, and more.

Bench Jewelers are the unsung heroes of the jewelry industry! Listen to Paul talk about how bench jewelers are sometimes underappreciated in the process. He goes on to urgent store owners to give the bench jewelers the tools, resources, and training that will help the jewelry store achieve more success.

Paul also talks about Ryan of Knox Jewelers defending his business during the riots in Minneapolis during the time after the killing of George Floyd. Ryan selflessly put his life on the line, protected the business that brought his family and employees their livelihood, and did not let anyone destroy that. In the end, Ryan and Knox Jewelers escaped with only minor damage that night with the help of other neighboring stores.

This podcast was recorded during the RJO summer show in Minneapolis, and Paul talks about how RJO does an excellent job for the jewelry industry. Take advantage of training offered in the industry. Additionally, Paul advises that staying humble and being kind to your bench jewelers will go a long way. Additionally, ensure a succession plan is in place for when the time comes.
