Unbroken Veterans with Sam La Piana

About Sam:
Sam La Piana is one of the cohosts of the Unbroken Veterans Podcast. He has served nine years in the Army Reserve with one tour to Afghanistan. He chose to join the military because he was tired of thanking people for their service when he knew the best way to thank them was to serve as well. On the civilian side, Sam is in industrial sales and enjoys spending time with his Wife and kids, being outdoors and shooting.

In this episode we hear a powerful story of how Brian went from being unsure of where his life was going and feeling without purpose, to overcoming his fears of success and judgement, conquering his limiting beliefs, and becoming an Author and Entrepreneur.
About Brian:
Brian Ondrako is a father, author, podcaster, and consultant for start-ups on the best sales practices to grow their business.
For many years after college and into his 20s, he felt life was simply passing by. A sense of complacency and uncertainty about his life's direction and purpose shrouded his days. However, this dark period blossomed into an awakening, leading him into what he refers to as his "Renaissance Period". This period was characterized by a renewed focus on curiosity and imagination, opening doors to deep learning and exploration that had been dormant since childhood. This curiosity ignited an entrepreneurial fire within him, a flame that had been buried for most of his life due to fear of success, self-limiting beliefs, and the judgement of others.
Through this transformative journey, he discovered his identity as a NAVIGATOR. His "North Star" became clear: to guide others on their journey to Just Get Started. He firmly believes that the journey of self-discovery must originate from within, that happiness can only truly be found once we discover ourselves. If we can focus on building self-awareness, he posits, we will gain a greater appreciation for the world around us, laying the foundation for a happier, more fulfilling life.

This is a recent episode from the Flipside of Leadership series with Lions Guide Leadership Development Director, Keith "Flip" Griffin.
In this episode, Keith and Dale explore the book, The Truth about Employee Engagement.
In this business fable, author Patrick Lencioni takes on a topic that almost everyone can relate to: job misery. Millions of workers, even those who have carefully chosen careers based on true passions and interests, dread going to work, suffering each day as they trudge to jobs that make them cynical, weary, and frustrated.
It is a simple fact of business life that any job, from investment banker to dishwasher, can become miserable. Through the story of a CEO turned pizzeria manager, Lencioni reveals the three elements that make work miserable -- irrelevance, immeasurability, and anonymity -- and gives managers and their employees the keys to make any job more engaging.
We dive into the book, review our insights, and discuss key takeaways from the book. This is a great episode, and you're going to love it!

Dan is a retired Army Sergeant First Class whom Dale came to learn about over the last few months after having stumbled upon the impactful work that he is doing with his non-profit, 22Zero.
In this episode, Dan and Dale explore his story of how, following his combat deployment to Afghanistan where he suffered the physical and emotional injuries of multiple IED explosions, Dan found himself suicidal as a means to end his mental torture of Post-Traumatic Stress.
Dan tells us how he survived the consideration to end his life, to go on a mission to cure the injury of PTS for himself.
Now along with his team at 22Zero, Dan has saved thousands of veterans, first-responders, and civilians suffering in silence with trauma. His mission is to heal our heroes.
This is one of the more impactful stories you're going to hear here on Lions Guide…

On this episode, (which is at least a part 1 episode, as we're not done with this conversation yet) Blank Canvas Author Craig Stanland, Ultra-Habits Podcast Host RJ Singh, and Dale have a discussion about being a high-performer. We wanted to hop on and have a conversation about tactics, but rightfully so this episode quickly and deeply dove into mindset. So this is part 1 of our open discussion about what it takes to be a high-performer. It's an awesome conversation…

On this episode, we explore Ben's journey to finding mindfulness in his life, how it helped him overcome fear and anxiety, and now is a practice that keeps him focused and present. We always learn a lot from Ben, and learned even more in this episode. You will too...
About Ben:
Ben discovered mindfulness and meditation 25 years ago while seeking methods to enhance his performance in military training. A lifelong student of self-mastery, he continued to learn physical and mental techniques to improve performance throughout his military career.
After completing multiple combat deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, Ben turned to the power of meditation, breathwork and yoga to heal his mind, body and relationships. By combining mindfulness with yogic breathing techniques, he created a framework that helped him heal from the cumulative effects of combat and post-traumatic stress.
Ben’s approach to self-mastery and mental performance focuses on mindfulness as a core contemplative practice that is supported by breathwork and movement. His practice is informed by a 27-year military career that includes many tours within the Naval Special Warfare community during wartime. Ben teaches mindful performance, yoga and breathwork, and is passionate about serving others in their journey to heal and perform at peak levels in all aspects of life.

Dave & I talk a lot about the importance of a wealth mindset, and explore his story of coming from a middle-class family, to his commission in the Marine Corps, afterwards becoming a business owner, and on to be an equity partner in $450M worth of assets … and even with all that going on Dave is a high-performer, getting after it every day…

Dave is also the author of The Holistic Wealth Strategy: Your Roadmap To Financial Freedom and has been a featured guest on numerous media outlets.
Prior to Pantheon, Dave earned his bachelor’s degree from George Washington University, served as a Captain in the Marine Corps and established himself as a successful entrepreneur who built 3 companies over the past 2 decades. Tomy Parker grew up in Montana before joining the Marine Corp as an infantry rifleman after high school.
While on foot patrol, he stepped on an improvised explosive device resulting in the amputation of his right leg above the knee, left leg at the hip, and all of the fingers on his hand save his thumb.
He returned to Montana but soon lost his purpose in life and filled that void with drugs, leading him down the long dark road of substance abuse.
A decade later, Tomy ran into his childhood friend (now fiancé), and through her love and acceptance, reignited his purpose within.
On this episode, Dale talks with Tomy and Dara about Tomy’s being wounded in combat, his journey overcoming his drug addiction, and how their story came to be from life in smalltown Montana, eventually finding true love in one another...

Meet Nick Lavery:
An active duty member of the US Army Special Forces (commonly known as the “Green Berets”) - a group of the military that performs critical missions, including direct action, counterinsurgency, foreign internal defense, special reconnaissance, and unconventional warfare.
In 2013, on Nick's second combat rotation to Afghanistan, he and his Detachment fell victim to an insider attack ultimately resulting in the loss of his leg. Following a year of surgeries and initial recovery including the use of a prosthetic at Walter Reed National Medical Military Center, he returned to his unit. Refusing a military medical retirement, Nick set his sights on returning to operational status. In 2015, at the conclusion of a challenging, comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate Nick's abilities to operate, he returned to his Detachment and was subsequently deployed once again to Afghanistan conducting full spectrum combat operations. Nick is considered the first Green Beret to return to combat as an above the knee amputee.
In this episode, Nick and I explore his journey from childhood to his entry into the service; discussing his experience transitioning to a focused high-performer and the mindset that motivated him to return to service, become a motivational speaker, and write his book: Objective Secure.
Nick Lavery is one incredible guy - I guarantee this is one conversation you will NOT want to miss!

Tune into this Lions Guide podcast episode for a conversation with Tom Hardin on all things human behavior and decision making…
From 2008-2012, a little-known financial analyst, Tom Hardin, assisted FBI agents in understanding how insider trading occurred in the financial services industry. As the youngest professional later implicated in the sting, and known by his undercover moniker “Tipper X”, Tom was tasked with wearing a covert body wire to help the FBI bring down some of its biggest targets in the industry, leading to the largest Wall Street house cleaning campaign of a generation.
Tom was later invited by the FBI to speak to their rookie agents in 2016 and is now a global keynote speaker, corporate trainer and board advisor on behavioral ethics, decision making, and organizational misconduct and culture risk. Through rigorous self-examination, Tom took responsibility for his actions as a young professional, used the experience to transform his life and is now on an on-going journey into human behavior and the decision-making process.
On this episode, Tom and Dale explore his story - one of recognizing when we’ve made an error and having the courage to pivot and persevere through the consequences.

On this episode we take a dive into the book, Man's Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl with the host of the Do Hard Things Podcast, Jay Tiegs.
Jay and I talk about the numerous insights and takeaways from the book and how they've served us, and how they can serve you, in our journey for growth…
About the book:
Man's Search for Meaning has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 psychiatrist Viktor Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished. Based on his own experience and the stories of his many patients, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl's theory, known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos ("meaning"), holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful. In the decades since its first publication, Man's Search for Meaning has become one of the most influential books in America; it continues to inspire us all to find significance in the very act of living.
