Kiwitripsters
We take in the sights and sensory experiences of Northern Vietnam in Hanoi. We dabble in the watery of world of Halong Bay. Beyond Vietnam, we explore more of Indochina, with a dip with Cambodia and exploring wonderful Angkor. Hanoi Vietnam remains one of the best-value destinations in the world, and we kick off this episode in the sultry city of Hanoi. In a city of eight million residents and nearly six million scooters, navigating Hanoi can be a head-swirl. We showcase the city highlights, including the sensory delights of the Old Quarter and the city’s coffee culture.
Halong Bay A dip with Halong Bay. Two and half hour’s drive east of Hanoi, it is entirely feasible to sample Vietnam’s legendary limestone seascape as a day trip. The central area of Halong Bay is a congested victim of over-tourism. For those in the know, there’s a far more rewarding alternative. Bai Tu Long Bay is Halong’s lesser-known neighbour, but more than an equal in the beauty stakes!
Siem Reap Siem Reap is the launchpad for exploring the Angkor temples. As a star-powered tourist town, Siem Reap is stirring back into life post-Covid, but if you want to avoid the crowds, go now, because it is only 30% of the way back to it’s pre-Covid peak in visitor numbers. We highlight some of the essential Siem Reap sights and experiences, from ice cream rolls to fish pedicures.
Angkor Wat Temple touring in Angkor. As the world’s largest religious monument, Angkor Wat is a staggering sight, but don’t think you have to explore it at sunrise. Kiwi Tripsters also explores Angkor Thom, the last and most enduring capital city built by the Khmer Empire. Amid its many treasures, Bayon Temple is a prize draw, with those fifty odd sculpted towers piercing the skyline, extravagantly carved with curiously smiling faces, as enigmatic as Mona Lisa.

Place Royale is a great starting point, down in the old port district, on the banks of the St. Lawrence River. Serious coin has been lavished on transforming the port district in recent years. As you sail into the harbour, a gigantic marble doorway rises up to greet you on a rocky outcrop, by the harbour entrance, the Portara.
Over to French RivieraAs Europe emerges from its winter hibernation, spring heralds party time for the French Riviera. And post-Covid, it will be quite the party, headlined by the Cannes Film Festival and Monaco Grand Prix in May. It may be a playground for the rich and famous, but you don’t have to be loaded to have a whale of a time in Monaco.

You can ride across the retired raiways viaducts, including the longest viaduct in the Southern Hemisphere, which is nearly 300 metres long, 45 metres above the river.
Sights in LyonLet’s indulge in some long-haul destination spotlights with a look at Lyon. It’s a big French city, but very much the bridesmaid to Paris. They've got a stash of Roman Empire relics – some of France’s best, because its where the Romans established the capital of Gaul. Dive into the Cinema Museum, because Lyon lays claim to be the birthplace of film, thanks to the Lumiere brothers. Gastronomically, Lyon is a culinary hit with old-school bistros a holiday highlight. Segment ThreeThere’s so many great mountain bike destinations across New Zealand, but Taupo is a top contender. Craters Mountain Bike Park in Taupo is the arch-rival of The Redwoods in Rotorua. We take a ride before striking out on the Huka Falls trail. Plus we check out some city eats.
Segment FourGreat Lake Taupo. It’s a jewel of a lake and its size is staggering. You could fit Singapore within Lake Taupo. The biggest mistake travellers make is rushing through Cusco. Plan a stay for at least two nights to explore the street scene, Cusco Cathedral and some of the nearby townships like Chinchero.
Segment FourThe Brazil-Argentine border plays host to one of the world’s greatest falls. Iguazu. They are four times the width and twice as high as Niagara. But getting to these falls takes some effort. Argentina provides the intimate, up-close encounter, but Brazil blows their neighbour out of the water for wide-angle panoramics. Segment 3Switching islands, let’s head to Dunedin and the Otago Peninsula. The wildlife encounters are breath-taking. Richly blessed with flippered and feathered possibilities, the volume and variety of wildlife huddled on that peninsula is like a candy factory for twitchers. We check out the Northern Albatross Wildlife Colony at Taiaroa Head before exploring the epic wildlife at the privately-run Nature’s Wonders.
Segment 4When you’ve had your fill of Dunedin’s natural wonders, it’s the city’s cultural treasures that will keep you agog. Let’s start with Larnach Castle, Dunedin’s crown jewel, built in 1871 by William Larnach. Plus we highlight one of New Zealand’s finest old house experiences at Olveston, before taking a journey into the whimsical gems of the Natural Mystery Museum.

On this edition of Kiwi Tripsters, lets hit the road in coastal New England. We start our journey amid the gilded glory of Newport Rhode Island. We head east to Salem, home to the infamous witch trials. We take a dip with New Hampshire’s coastal city of Portsmouth, before taking in Maine and the proud town of Portland.Segment 1Gilded glories of Newport. We start in Rhode Island because TV fans of The Gilded Age are flocking to Newport - another star specimen of the power of screen tourism. Segment 2North of Boston, follow your nose on Highway 1, the oldest major highway on the Eastern Seaboard, offering unrivalled access to the very best of New England's northern coast. For better or worse, Salem is best known as the scene of the infamous Witchcraft Trials of 1692. The colonial port was once a far more important shipping city than Boston, and a prime player in the China Trade. But it’s the legacy of the Salem witch trials that lures visitors.
Segment 3From Salem, cruise up the New England coast into New Hampshire and the storied city of Portsmouth. It’s a great overnight stop. The city has a legacy of caring for its past, with a staggering trove of Colonial and Federal homes in original condition. An entire neighbourhood of homes has been preserved in Strawbery Banke Museum.
Segment FourKiwi Tripsters heads to the charismatic city of Portland, in the state of Maine. The Old Port crowns Portland's historic district, where the brick and stone of the grand old warehouses extends into brick-paved sidewalks and stone-paved streets. It’s atmospherically compelling. On this edition of Kiwi Tripsters, we head to the birthplace of New Zealand tourism to bask in the geothermal glories of Rotorua. We dive into the dining scene and check out some of the city’s latest enticements, from the lakefront boardwalk to New Zealand’s latest Great Ride.
