Filmi Ladies takes a woman-centered look at Indian cinema, with occasional detours into books, tv, and other pop culture. Hosted by Pitu Sultan and Beth Loves Bollywood.
Continuing our Kapoor series, we discuss Shashi Kapoor's family in this episode: wife and actress Jennifer Kendal and their children Karan, Kunal, and Sanjana. If you know anything about them at all, it's probably that they all launched in films and never went anywhere as actors, but we watched a film starring each of them to flesh out that story. Jennifer, of course, was an accomplished stage actor before her marriage to Shashi, and when she chose to dip her toes back in acting, you can see the talent!
Films discussed: Junoon (1978), 36 Chowringhee Lane (1981), Vijeta (1982), Sultanat (1986) (read Beth's essay here https://antiserious.com/sultanat-the-epic-of-fictitioustan-bf1f42c80838), and Hero Hiralal (1988)

Did you know there's no ketchup emoji?!? Beth didn't until she went looking for it to put in this episode title, but a can of soup will do nicely, given that we discuss Killer Soup (2024) - and a big mix of other things we've been watching lately, including Zara Hatke Zara Bachke (2023), Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya (2024), and Trimurti (1995).

In today's episode of Filmi Ladies, we continue discussing the Kapoor family. We've previously done episodes on Prithviraj Kapoor and his three sons - Raj, Shammi and Shashi. We now move on to the next generation - Raj's sons Randhir and Rajiv, plus we also discuss Babita Shivdasani, an actor and star in her own right before she became Randhir's wife and a Kapoor bahu. [Note: Pitu's phone initially autocorrected "bahu" to "baguette."]
Films discussed: Farz (1967), Jawani Deewani (1972), Haath Ki Safai (1974), Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), and Prem Granth (1996), plus another splash of Kal Aaj Aur Kal.
What are your thoughts on Randhir, Rajiv and Babita?
Even though none of these Kapoors are in it, do watch the super cute Upar Wale Teri Duniya Mein from Haath Ki Safai starring the great character actor Satyen Kappu. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6T8_m1WlB0

It's Beth ka Happy Budday! And to celebrate Gemini season, aka the sign of the twins, we decided to do a twin0centric episode (because really, what in the Manmohan Desai could be more Beth?)
We discuss Haseena Maan Jayegi (1968), Sharmeelee (1971), Ghazab (1982), Jeans (1998), and Duplicate (1998).
We also discuss the difference between actual twins vs doppelgangers.
Tell us your favorite twin movies!
Beth read out a bit of the good discussion of Jeans on Letterboxd but there's more! https://letterboxd.com/film/jeans/
Our dear friends at the Khandaan Podcast have, perhaps unwisely, asked both of us on to discuss twin movies! Pitu did Hello Brother https://youtu.be/TF1itiBCna4?si=adBBHvKj7fMm564e and Beth did Duplicate https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AaUkZpwjHZ4

This is our longest episode yet, and it had to be in order to give this often underappreciated Kapoor the respect he deserves. Masala, parallel, and international films: he did them all, and he did them all very well.
We also discuss the very important question of what ice cream flavor each of the first four Kapoors would be.
Films in focus this episode: The Householder, Jab Jab Phool Khile, Aa Gale Lag Ja, Suhaag,* Heat and Dust, and New Delhi Times.

What do we say about Shabana Azmi that hasn't been said before? Whether the movie is good, bad or ridiculous, she is always great!
We watched a whopping 7 films for this episode, some parallel, some masala and she was fab in every single one. Beth watched Ankur, Lorie, Lahu Ke Do Rang, and Khoon Ki Pukaar. Pitu watched Arth, Mandi, and Swami.
We discuss her nuanced acting, her emotional scenes, her restraint, innate dignity, her power to the people song from Parvarish, her chemistry with her co-stars, her beautiful hair, and her funny hat from Amar Akbar Anthony. 😁
What are your favorite Shabana Azmi films?

We discuss the second son of Prithviraj Kapoor - Shammi, a giant superstar who brought flamboyance, giddy delight and uninhibited, joyous dancing to Hindi cinema. His career can be divided into two phases - his "hero" phase and his supporting actor phase where he played dad/cop/uncle or extremely skilled plastic surgeon. We discuss Mem Sahib (1956), Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957), Brahmachari (1968), and Bundal Baaz (1976).What are your favorite Shammi Kapoor films?Do watch the puppy birthday song from Mem Sahib: https://youtu.be/12WvtoTJ3r0?si=89TlgWMui0p4EcaQ

When you're talking about Indian movies, he's a cine qua non [note from editor: stop it]: Raj Kapoor (1924–1988). We look at Shree 420, Chori Chori, and Aah, with detours into Sangam, Mera Naam Joker, Bobby, Prem Rog, and, yes, Ram Tere Ganga Maili.
• We love how his films always have ideas and messages, especially the socialist ones!
• Why does Nargis's departure from his life seem to turn him into a dirty old man when he's behind the camera?
• And why does he seem to go downhill in the color film era?
• Do you prefer him as an actor or as a director - or are those inseparable concepts?
• What's your favorite performance?
• And what's your favorite song sequence in one of his directed projects?
• If you want to watch the adorable musical performance at the end of Aah (though it's a bit spoiler-y), try this link https://youtu.be/jpkWkZ6Kf0Y?si=OzvIBrY0HZZw6qKS&t=7944 (start at 2:12:24 if it doesn't automatically).

On today's episode we discuss the Filmi Jodi of Amar Singh Chamkila and his singing partner and wife Amarjot. This Netflix biopic is a meeting of three genius minds: director Imtiaz Ali, music composer A R Rahman and actor/singer Diljit Dosanjh.
Tell us:
• Do you like biopics in general?
• What did you think of Chamkila?
• Were you familiar with Chamkila before watching the movie?
• How do you feel about Imtiaz Ali movies?
We stay pretty on track in this one, but a few other films pop up briefly: Socha Na Tha, Jab We Met, Jab Harry Met Sejal, Rockstar, and Crew.

Today we're launching a new series on the first family of Hindi cinema: THE KAPOORS! Founding great-granddaddy Prithviraj (1906–1972) has an incredibly filmi beginning: once plucked from a line of extras by a heroine for his sizzling looks, he never looked back. He bridged the transition from silent films to talkies, became a superstar, managed an entire second career as the head of a traveling theater troupe, and was part of a network of industry figures whose names we still know today. To get a better understanding of his stardom, we focus on Vidyapati (1937, made by Calcutta's New Theatres), Sikandar (1941), and Kal Aaj aur Kal (1971). Yes, there's a 30-year gap in there—and Mughal-e-Azam is not on the list because we both find it a dreadful slog—but never fear, we talk about his transition into the pater familias for the ages. Read more of Beth's thoughts on Sikandar on her blog https://www.bethlovesbollywood.com/2014/04/sikandar-1941.html. Beth recommends Madhu Jain's biography The Kapoors with a cautionary note that at times it is repetitive (who amongst us, etc) and sycophantic. Our dear friend Amrita from Khandaan podcast joined us to talk about this effervescent and electric actress, a Filmi Ladies favorite! We focus on three of her Hindi hits: Amrita picked Chandni (1989), Pitu picked Mr India (1987) and Beth, for reasons she will explain, picked Jaani Dost?!?

It's high time we took a closer look at podcast favorite Kabir Bedi, who never quite had the career in India that we think he should have. He did, however, have QUITE the career internationally, doing a fascinating range of projects in Europe and the US. Pitu read his autobiography and has many fascinating details to report, we both watched some of his 1970s Hindi work plus his huge Italian hit Sandokan, and Beth revisited his work in the 80s James Bond film Octopussy (where his role is basically Sandokan with more formal clothing and slightly less shouting).

Oh the irony: it took us a lot of brainpower to come up with two films that have much to do with sloth! Perhaps because lazy people are harder to make cinematically interesting? Hmmm. We went with two films from what sure seems like the peak era of slacker dudes in Hindi cinema: Wake Up Sid (2009) and Delhi Belly (2011).
Stray thoughts include:
• what makes the non-action of sloth so sinful?
• do women get to be as slothful as men?
• isn't Vijay Raaz the absolute best?

Two masala gems came to mind when we thought about greed: Bluffmaster! (2005) and Judaai (1997). On the surface these stories are about wanting money, but both of them have more to say about material gain entices people to act out of line with what society demands. Both films are also full of great performances, but, unsurprisingly, we spend most of our time gushing over Sridevi and Urmila.

We discuss what it means to be prideful and why that's bad through the characters in our chosen movies Kalyug (1981) and Raincoat (2004).
Both films are film adaptations of literary source material. Kalyug is based on the mighty epic Mahabharata and Raincoat is based on O Henry's short story The Gift Of The Magi. While Kalyug has giant egos, warring families and machinations, Raincoat explores the softer side of a bruised ego and the little fibs and lies we tell to soothe ourselves and others.

Pitu saw and loved Dunki; it's not playing near Beth, so she doesn't pipe up much until we get to a bigger discussion of Hirani's films. We also dip quickly into other things we've been watching and what's coming up on this podcast in 2024.

For all your holiday festivities, we investigate cakes in Hindi cinema, with the occasional amuse-bouches of other treats and feasts. Our special guest is Aditi Sen, collector of cake scenes and actual food historian, in addition to appreciator of the weird and wonderful in Indian movies. Follow Aditi's cake projects on tumblr https://tooreluctantacademic.tumblr.com and instagram https://www.instagram.com/cakesfrombollywood/. And read a great interview with her in Outlook, where she goes into more detail about how cake is a socio-econmic signifier. https://www.outlookindia.com/art-entertainment/the-place-of-cakes-in-bombay-cinema-magazine-249597Subscribe to Filmi Ladies on Spotifyhttps://open.spotify.com/show/7Ib9C1X5ObvN18u9WR0TK9 or Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/filmi-ladies/id1642425062@filmiladies on Instagram and Twitter Pitu is @pitusultan on InstagramBeth is @bethlovesbolly on Twitter Email us at filmiladies at gmailOur logo was designed by London-based artist Paula Ganoo @velcrothoughts on Instagram https://www.art2arts.co.uk/paula-vaughan

For such a short career on screen, the glamorous, charismatic Parveen Babi is indelible. In this episode, we focus on two films, Deewaar and Rang Birangi, and because her career was so shaped by her off-screen life, we discuss her experience of schizophrenia, sticking as closely possible to the facts of her experience of schizophrenia and how the film industry, quite frankly, failed her. Read Karishma Upadhyay's wonderful biography Parveen Babi: A Life! Available at Amazon and many other sellers. https://www.amazon.com/Parveen-Babi-Life-Karishma-Upadhyay/dp/9350095785Read Parveen's 1984 autobiographical essay about her mental illness in Illustrated Weekly at the images in this link: https://twitter.com/BollywoodTrivia/status/981425373358559233

Commemorating 20 years of Shahrukh's turn as a tragic angel/Mary Poppins character in Kal Ho Na Ho! Borrowing a fair bit from two Hrishikesh Mukherjee films - Anand and Bawarchi - with a big heaping of Kjo masala, this is quite a melodrama set to a banger soundtrack by Shankar Ehsaan Loy.
Tell us - would you befriend Naina or Rohit? Or are you interested in Sweetu and Jazz? How do we feel about the bickering mom and dadi? Is there enough crying or do you think we needed more? How do you feel about playing passing the parcel? What is your favorite song? (Beth's is Pretty Woman and Pitu's is Mahi Ve.)

We choose two films in which dancing is a plot element: Disco Dancer and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. That's about all they have in common, other than being fairly lightweight concoctions that we enjoy very much. Episode breakdown: 30 minutes on Disco Dancer, another 10 or so on JBJ, then another 25+ on other films (Indian and otherwise) that are about dancing in some way, our favorite film dancers, etc. Tell us: • Does Disco Dancer have some of the best deaths of all time? • And is Rajesh Khanna doing the most extra cameo of all time?• What flavors make up Jimmy ice cream?• Do you know any disco scholars who can assess that aspect of the cultural context of this film? And tell us how that works as the dressing of a class struggle vendetta?• How did Bobby Deol end up in JBJ?• Has anything this fun ever happened to you at a train station? The epic crowd-sourced filmi disco playlist: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PL5tbl3kACyvLbOiaPiAO7Ozqo8Avzq-wg&feature=sharedSubscribe to Filmi Ladies on Spotify https://open.spotify.com/show/7Ib9C1X5ObvN18u9WR0TK9 or Apple Podcastshttps://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/filmi-ladies/id1642425062@filmiladies on Instagram and Twitter Pitu is @pitusultan on InstagramBeth is @bethlovesbolly on Twitter Email us at filmiladies at gmailOur logo was designed by London-based artist Paula Ganoo @velcrothoughts on Instagram https://www.art2arts.co.uk/paula-vaughan
We enjoyed doing our women at work episode so much, we followed it up with a men at work episode! In each of the movies we discuss, the protagonist's job or career is central to their self identity or to larger personal or societal issues. Sometimes that's good, other times it's bad, but it's never boring and it always leads to a lot of Filmi drama. Should you let your job define you? How do you navigate workplace ethics? What are the perils of ambition? What happens when the object of your work disappoints you (or, in the case of Ra.One, kills you)?Under discussion: Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year, Jana Aranya, Ra.One, and Endhiran. Stray thoughts: • Someone could do an entire podcast on cops in Indian cinema, even just on the better and more unusual examples.• Are you, like Beth, tired of stories about bratty man-child artists?• Is capitalism to blame for...everything? (Probably.)• Have you rewatched Ra.One and if so has your opinion of it changed?
We are celebrating Baazigar's 30th Anniversary with this episode! 30 years of Machiavellian Srk, vendetta, Abbas Mastaan's clever direction, big hair, colored contact lenses, weepy Rakhee, race cars and catchy music!
Does Baazigar rank in your favorite SRK roles?

Only barely squeaking under the wire of relevance, here we are with our thoughts on the genuinely iconic Kuch Kuch Hota Hai. For both of us, it has held up remarkably well. Pitu is more smitten than ever with the performances and music, and Beth is full of new appreciation for the writing. For all its bubblegum and Archie aesthetics, KKHH has a lot of very grown-up things to say. As usual, detours in this episode are rampant and include Jaws, what happened to Anjali during the intervening decade, Pitu missing her chance to be an extra in Josh, and starting plans for a real-life filmi summer camp that will definitely contain dance numbers and a murder mystery.

Some may argue that Dimple Kapadia doesn't quite count as a superstar of Hindi cinema, but she's so interesting that we couldn't resist! Her appeal is a little harder to pin down than with the other women in our superstars series so far, and maybe that's her greatest strength. She's certainly the least filmi of the people we've focused on, despite having an incredibly filmi debut, but she makes up for it in...gravitas?
Tell us your favorite Dimple performances and films in the comments! What would you like to see her do next? And, most importantly, would you have run off with Rajesh Khanna?

He's one of the most versatile actors we've seen and is always re-inventing himself. We remember him from his moppetty 90s Ole Ole days to his metrosexual avatar to his villianous turns and his edgy, indie films.
Everyone loves Dil Chahta Hai, Kal ho na ho, Parineeta and Omkara but in this episode we discuss his lesser known works - Chef, Agent Vinod and Jawaani Jaaneman. Are these movies lesser known because they were under-promoted or did they just not appeal to viewers?
Tell us in the comments which underappreciated Saif films you like and recommend!

Pitu ran straight home from the cinema to record this episode on the weekend's big release! This episode is chock full of SPOILERS, so if you haven't seen the film and want to go in not knowing anything more than you've already accidentally learned from social media, save this one for later.
Overall we had a lot of fun with Jawan and are thrilled for SRK that it's a success and, more importantly, that he seems to be having fun continuing his string of experiments. But like Pathaan, neither of us is likely to rewatch it anytime soon - it's fundamentally Not For Us, and that's ok!
Things we touch on and might have explored more in-depth if we weren't rushing to get an episode out and that we therefore hope you will help us discuss in the comments: • Should we have watched more Tamil masala films before going into this?
• Should we watch some more now that we've seen it? • This film has a lot of women characters, but it's still incredibly macho. • Did Deepika walk away with the best women's role in the film despite not being the named co-star? • Which SRK avatar in this film is the most beeyootiful? • Why are there so many films with meh songs in 2023? • Why Sanjay Dutt?
KAUNSA SAMOSA INDEED. 🤔
If you want more of our thoughts on SRK, including what we would like to see him do after Dunki, click on our SRK episode playlist linked at the end of this video.

This week we look at three films depicting women who have interesting jobs...but more importantly, these films are stories of women whose jobs lead to very interesting things! This may be the biggest range of films in any one episode of this podcast so far, covering almost 60 years and including 3 different language industries: • Mahanagar (Satyajit Ray, 1963, Bengali) • Umbartha (Jabbar Patel, 1982, Marathi) • Shakuntala Devi (Anu Menon, 2020, Hindi)
While we don't think a woman's job outside the home defines her, we do think Indian cinema has made some amazing stories about what happens when a woman steps out of the home and family into the wider world to learn, earn, and succeed on her own.

We wanted to do something different so we asked for questions from our subscribers and also compiled a list of questions to ask each other!
Much laughter ensued as we had a fun conversation.
Due to the length of our baat-cheet, we had to split the episode into two parts.
This is part one. We hope you enjoy listening/watching as much as we enjoyed recording it.

Are there any items in King Khan's filmography that don't get discussed all day every day? Yes, as it turns out, and many of them cluster in a few years on either side of the millennium when he was making so many films that some of them have been lost in the shuffle. Pitu chose Asoka—weird, beautiful, sexy Asoka—and Beth chose Josh—straightforward Shakespearean masala with a lovely sibling relationship at its core.
Leave your vote for underappreciated/under-discussed SRK films in the comments! It's fascinating how one corner of the internet or culture more generally is obsessed with a certain film while others of us haven't heard about it in years.

Don't snooj on KJo's newest, whether you're in it for Shabana and Dharmendra or Alia and Ranveer. While a few characters felt very underwritten, overall we both appreciated some of what the script put forward and definitely loved the performances. On the other hand, we were not in it for the songs, which we mostly found disappointing.
Tell us in the comments:
• Where does this fall on your personal rankings of KJo films?
• Do you agree with Pitu that this film has very K3G bones?
• Have you read any exceptionally good reviews of it?

Vikramaditya Motwane's Lootera has turned 10, and we are as eager to discuss it as an art thief is to find an unsuspecting zamindar! Everything has held up beautifully: the casting, the performances, the music, the visuals, the story.... It's a romantic, maybe naive little world, split into two parts that complement each other perfectly.
What stands out most about #Lootera for you?

With her loosely braided long hair, impish smile and powerhouse performances, Jaya Bhaduri became one of Hindi cinema's biggest (if unlikely) stars. At her peak, she played spunky firebrands and sensitive girls next door to much adulation.
In her later years, she played the (often weepy) mother in many films. We discuss Abhimaan, Anamika, Guddi, Kora Kagaz and Koshish. We also discuss her off-screen grumpy camel persona and hope she doesn't admonish us. 🐪

Whether beaks, claws, or fins, animals are humans' friends in Indian cinema. We discuss some of our favorite animal characters, their amazing skills, and the truly great tradition of snake films.

Spoilers in this episode!
We read Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, watched the 1940 Hithcock adaptation, then watched Biren Nag's 1964 Hindi adaptation Kohraa. There's much to love in all of them (especially the novel!), but, not surprisingly, Waheeda Rehman as the second Mrs de Winter is our favorite performance, complemented fantastically by Lalita Pawar. If only they'd cast someone else as Maxim. :/
What are your thoughts on this insecure heroine and her, um, slightly weird love of a man who is such a creep?
We did not watch the latest Netflix adaptation, but Beth managed to see the 1990s version with Charles Dance, Emilia Fox, and Diana Rigg (it's streaming on PBS and on Youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r-j34wuCUvk).

...and here's a companion piece to last week's episode: men characters we hold with great affection. Some of them elicit heart-eyes emojis, but others are just people who stand out in a good way. As with the previous discussion, good writing and good performances by actors we like are often a part of these choices, but we don't absolutely require it.

This week's episode is exactly what it says on the label: women characters we hold with great affection. They're not necessarily the best written or the most memorable, and we might not want to be friends with them, but we have a soft spot for them anyway.

This 1988 revenge drama starring goddess Rekha is, in our opinion, is an absolute masala masterpiece, touching on issues of self-determination, inner strength, the evils of greed, a walkoff over a decade before Zoolander, and, of course, gold lamé. What more could you possibly want?
Oh, did you also want Kabir Bedi in a teeny swimsuit? Rakesh Roshan provides.
Do we need t-shirts that say "Rekha can out-anything anybody. HOW DARE YOU?"?

Finally an Aishwarya film worthy of our queen! Pitu loved Ponniyin Selvan 2, but due to various annoying life circumstances Beth hasn't gotten to see it yet, so this is a very one-sided episode! In which we discuss why certain stars (or not) have disappeared. Underneath it all, we're really just wondering why people we will never meet—but about whom we have thoughts and feelings!—make the decisions that they do. Perhaps the gossip experts and other keen analysts among you will be able to answer some of our questions.
Tell us in the comments: are you, like Pitu, ready for the return of Chitrangda Singh, even if it's with Sara Ali Khan? Is Preity Zinta's Instagram enough of a presence for you or, like Beth, do you wish she was on larger screens again? Do you remember Chandrachur Singh from unskippable before-the-feature ads on DVDs too?

So far in our superstar series, we've discussed people that are consistently regarded by most as great actors. Now we come to an actor that we think was underrated, despite her fine performances in multiple languages, many genres, and many decades: Sharmila Tagore. Her films we discuss in detail are Devi, An Evening in Paris, and Barnali (available with English subtitles here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52BYscguxrY&feature=youtu.be), plus detours into our favorite hero pairings for her.

We watched adaptations of Tagore's short story The Hungry Stones: the Bengali Kshudhita Pashan (1960, dir. Tapan Sinha) and the Hindi Lekin (1990, dir. Gulzar). While not as drastically different a pairing as Duvidha and Paheli, these two films create different worlds with the source material, a feat of creativity perhaps necessitated by the fact that Tagore left his story so unresolved. Strong casts, performances, music, production design, and overall artistic vision unite them. Apparently there is also a short film with yet a different setting—and very hungry stones. https://www.cufilmfest.arts.columbia.edu/2017-films/the-hungry-stones-khudito-pashanShare your thoughts in the comments! FINALLY we
1) have as guest star the truly wise, witty, funny, and delightful Sal (twitter: @salandthebadpun)
2) dig into Bengali cinema 3) try to enact dramatic poses inspired by our subject matter (spoiler: one of us fails utterly)
Suchitra Sen is a unique figure in Indian cinema: she's the sine qua non of Bengali films (no one woman is as critical to an entire body of a language cinema as she), she is highly regarded in both Bengali and Hindi cinema, she resolutely sculpted her professional image, and she walked away from films when she decided she was done and never looked back. We discuss four of her big films in both languages: Saptapadi, Agni Pariksha, Devdas, and Aandhi.
Several of Suchitra Sen's Bengali films that we discuss are available on Youtube with English subtitles at excellent TommyDan55 channel: Chaowa Pawa (It Happened One Night (https://youtube.com/watch?v=MNdJAi3xj9w&feature=shares), Agni Pariksha (https://youtube.com/watch?v=rOcC8KZNOSc&feature=shares), Saptapadi (https://youtube.com/watch?v=xRQA9jmK_pI&feature=shares), and several others, including Deep Jele Jai (which Beth watched but does not have strong enough feelings about to add to the podcast discussion; tell her in the comments if you do! https://youtube.com/watch?v=sR682WolT7U&feature=shares).
The channel has her Hindi Devdas too! https://youtube.com/watch?v=VIWWvAyKKvg&feature=shares

After learning that we both love Feroz Khan, we knew we had to do an episode on his films! We love his stylish, action-packed, surprisingly complex and nonjudgmental films in which MORE IS MORE!
Or as Pitu phrases it, "Why half-a*s anything when you can go for the jugular?"
This episode focuses on Qurbani, which maybe gets Beth's vote for most iconic FK film, and Janbaaz, because how can you resist a film with Dimple Kapadia AND Rekha AND Sridevi?!?

The extremely talented and wonderfully luminous Nutan is next up on our series on women superstars of Hindi cinema! "Party song" is a concept we all think we understand, but this decades-old building block of Hindi cinema deserves a closer look. The one and only Amrita from www.youtube.com/@khandaan-abollywoodpodcast3134 is here to be the party police—in a GOOD way—and offers a great working definition that we expand across the years and look at songs from the 1960s through today. Her definition starts at 0:01:15 and it's quite brilliant. Pitu adds more crucial ingredients starting at 0:03:20, including the importance of main character energy and playing musical instruments inappropriately. Beth wonders if a party song really only requires someone to behave like Shammi Kapoor.
Crash our party in the comments: what are your favorites? Is there a particular star, director, composer, or choreographer who should be put in charge of all the party songs? And is there anyone who should _not_ be invited in the future?
Here's the playlist of all the songs mentioned in the episode, arranged in chronological order so you can look for trends that come and go. Is Raj Kapoor really the king of party songs, and if so, who holds the crown now? Share your observations!

Call us TV Ladies this week! We're talking about two of Shah Rukh Khan's early tv shows: #Fauji (1988)and Doosra Keval (1989). One of these not good, even though he is charismatic in it. The other is...flawed but with good bones and ideas, even though everyone but him is meh to bad in it and he absolutely steals the show.
I say, chaps!

What can we say? She's so talented, so funny, so beautiful, so lush! We deliberately chose some less-discussed movies from her filmography: yes, we do Mahal (1949), but we also look at Mr & Mrs '55 (a 1955 comedy with...Guru Dutt?!?) and Phagun (1958, with Pitu's non-favorite Bharat Bhushan).

We LOVED Anvita Dutt's new film #Qala on #Netflix...until we didn't, though we have different reasons for that.
Yes: having a point of view, evocative design, complicated mother-daughter relationships, #TriptiDimri and #AnvitaDutt generally.
No: not trusting your audience will get the aforementioned point of view
Never again: films about messed-up artists

Have you ever caught yourself crying "But I like it!!!" when somebody tells you you're wrong to love a certain film? Welcome to the internet. In this episode, we discuss films we love that everyone else seems to hate. (Bear in mind "hate" seems to depend on what reviews you read or what corner of Twitter you lurk on.) We start the episode with the results of Beth posing this question to Twitter, and the themes that emerge may surprise you. Then Pitu and Beth share theirs. Spoiler: there's very little disagreement here, which is probably why we were close enough friends to decide to do a podcast. 😂

This is going to be all opinions all the time: films and people from Hindi cinema that everyone loves...but we don't. We really, really don't.
We do not always agree with each other here but found some very important common ground. Hint: he's very, very drunk.
Quotable quotes: "No Beth nooooo you're wrong!!!!!" and "Shriekingly hideous."
Beth apologies for having to look away from the camera to consult Wikipedia on a few topics while Pitu is talking.

He's baaaack! Filmmaker, writer, and journalist Nihit Bhave (Sacred Games, Choked, Dobaaraa, Phir Kabhi) returns to discuss the new Kannada smash hit Kantara. Nihit and Pitu both loved this "divine blockbuster"—kya tagline! It's beautiful, it's fascinating, it's hyper-specific, and it's utterly unique. (Beth plays moderator in this non-debate because she didn't get to see the film yet—but she WILL see it for sure!)
Other films we mention: Fandry and others by Nagraj Manjule, Jogwa by Rajiv Patil, Tumbbad by Rahi Anil Barve, and Sonchiriya by Abhishek Chaubey.
Leave your recommendations for other Kannada films in the comments!

Next up in our series Women Superstars of Indian Cinema: Waheeda Rehman!
We LOVE Waheeda Rehman—and frankly we're not sure we can be friends with anyone who doesn't, but does such a person even exist? The major films discussed today are Guide (1965) Kohraa (1964), and CID (1956, her first Hindi role). Neither of us could handle a rewatch of Pyaasa or Kagaaz Ke Phool, no matter how great they are. It seems like this series is also, inadvertently, going to include at least one truly annoying man per episode. Last time it was Raj Kapoor, and this time it's Dev Anand—who, to be fair, is way less irritating than Raj Kapoor and way less irritating in the films we watched than he would be later in his career. Nevertheless, he persisted.

Delightful and very smart filmmaker, writer, and journalist Nihit Bhave (Sacred Games, Choked, Dobaaraa, Phir Kabhi) joins us to talk about Hindi films with LGBTQIA+ stories and characters. The new Madhuri Dixie film Maja Ma is the major topic of conversation, and we also cover about Badhaai Do (YAY!), Kapoor and Sons (yay?), Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (...not yay), and Karan Johar (NOT YAY except for his short in Bombay Talkies).

Along with everyone else in the Indian cinema universe, we watched Ponniyin Selvan! This epic historical family drama and action film is a big hit for us, despite our utter ignorance about the real history and novel...and Tamil cinema generally. We apologize profusely for our mispronunciation of names and for forgetting to mention the very helpful animals that were such a delight!
What other Vikram films should we watch? And what historical dramas are you favorites?

NARGIS is first up in our series Women Superstars of Indian Cinema! Tell us your favorite of her films, especially if it isn't with Raj Kapoor. 🙄 Pitu rewatched her beloved Chori Chori (1956), Beth watched Nargis's first lead role in Taqdeer (1943), and we discuss what makes Nargis special and how she fits in the cinema pantheon.
Read more about Nargis on Upper Stall by film historian Karan Bali. https://upperstall.com/profile/luminary/nargis/

Filmi Ladies love Shah Rukh Khan! We discuss our own fandom, favorite films (and not), and what we love about him (and not).
Stand tall in your love! We discuss actors we like even though we can't explain why and then dig into why being told you shouldn't like someone/something from pop culture often is, in fact, a feminist issue.
Welcome to the first episode of the new podcast Filmi Ladies! We discuss the recent film Darlings by Jasmeet K. Reen, featuring Shefali Shah, Alia Bhatt, Vijay Varma, Roshan Mathew, and Rajesh Sharma. We also detour through some of our other favorite films with avenging women like Anjaam, Kahaani, Ek Hasina Thi, and Khoon Bhari Maang. 🐊💄☠️🕶💃🏾
