Study Reveals New Clues Into Childhood Cancer Survivors’ Increased Risk of Melanoma
Childhood cancer survivors are 2x more likely to develop melanoma.
Their risk of dying from melanoma is also doubled.
Study looked at 25,000+ survivors across the U.S. and Canada.
Risk Factors:
- High-dose radiation
- Alkylating agents
- Bleomycin (increases sun sensitivity)
Pediatric Melanoma
Pediatric melanoma cases rose ~1.7% yearly (1975–1994), then declined.
Sharpest rise in girls 15–19, possibly due to tanning habits.

Mary opens up about living with Dysplastic Nevus Syndrome (DNS), a rare condition that significantly increases melanoma risk and makes regular skin checks a non-negotiable part of life. She shares how being proactive with sun protection still didn’t prevent multiple melanoma diagnoses and how she's learned to navigate the emotional toll that can come with constant monitoring, biopsies, and the fear of recurrence.

Jenn and Mary also reflect on the powerful moment they connected as two people living with DNS and how finding someone who truly gets it can be a lifeline in an isolating experience.

J.B. Ward graduated with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology from the University of Louisville in Kentucky in 2014. One year after graduating, she was diagnosed with a rare form of melanoma, mucosal melanoma.

In the 8 years since, J.B. has experienced both sides of survivorship, undergoing several differing medical treatments and also engaging in clinical work with children and adults. She currently resides in Nashville, TN, where she enjoys creating art, especially charcoal portraits, and lives with her 9-year-old son, husband, and two dogs.

J.B. is actively involved in advocacy work, including serving as a consumer reviewer for the Department of Defense's (DoD's) Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs (CDMRP) melanoma research program and serving on the board of the Melanoma Research Alliance's RARE Melanoma Registry.

Stacey is a wife and mom to 3 redheads: a boy, a girl, and a dog. She lives in Colorado where she works in PR. She also loves music, eating, traveling, and advocacy! Not only is she one of Low Ultraviolet’s ambassadors but she was also recognized for her advocacy by the Melanoma Research Foundation.

Episode Note: Stacey received the placebo in her stage 2 Keytruda trial. It was a double-blind study, so she wasn't aware of it at the time. She believes her progression to stage 4 was likely because she was on the placebo, so she wasn't really receiving the immunotherapy at the time she was stage 2.

Welcome back to the Ultraviolet Tide! In today's episode, Jenn Schultz takes over as host and sits down with fellow L.U.V. Ambassador and friend Leah Adams for the first episode of the Skin Check with Jenn.

Leah is the Program Manager for the National Kidney Foundation’s Northern Ohio office. In her role, she manages the planning and implementation of all NKF programs in the Northern Ohio territory to support patients, caregivers, raise awareness, and educate healthcare professionals. On a more personal note, Leah is an avid runner, a melanoma survivor, and loves to travel! Ever since she was touched by cancer, Leah changed her life around for the better. She became a skin cancer and mental health advocate and also is a daughter of a Stage IV metastatic melanoma patient. She wants to use hers and her dad's story to inspire change, hope and action in regards to melanoma, sun safety and for people to protect their largest organ; their skin.
