Jeff Perera is leading the field in conversations on manhood and gender based violence and in today's discussion we get down to the root of it, with a lot of laughter on the way. Jeff has written many articles, given many keynote presentations, and even done a TedX talk on helpful vs harmful ideas of manhood, and he is a master of using analogies to make complex ideas and topics very relateable and understandable.

We talk about the origins of manhood as it is traditionally defined, how mansculinty has a direct impact on people of other genders, and the environments that this creates; in relationships, with self, with others, and in the workplace.  And maybe most importantly, we talk about building our empathy muscles.

Today we have a very real conversation with two time Olympic athlete and 8 time Canadian National Alpine Ski Champion, Allison Forsyth.  Allison is a survivor of sexual abuse in the Canadian sport system and is helping create change through safe sport advocacy and education. Her company ITP Sport provides independant complaint management for allegations of abuse and maltreatement in sport, as well as consultancy and education to organizations and their participants.

We talked about sexual abuse in the Canadian sport system, the importance of independant third party organizations in the role of reporting and investigating abuse allegations, what organizations need to do to safeguard their athletes (and themselves), and as well, the progression of harm that leads to abuse, and the 4 stages of grooming! One in three women, and one in six men experiance some form of sexual abuse in their lifetime so this is an episode with something for everyone; parents, athletes, coaches, and organzations.

Trigger Warning: This episode contains conversations on sexual and psychological abuse, athlete grooming, and other forms of maltreatment and trauma.  Please take care and proceed with caution.

Nancy and I talk about gender bias and sexism over the last 50 years - how some things have changed, and how other things havent. Nancy's podcast, Fire After 50, shares the stories of many women who are killing it in life and in business in their 50's, and Nancy embodies that herself.  We talk about the deprogramming of cultural norms that she has gone through, and compare that to the deprogramming that both men and women need to undergo to make the world a more equitable place.  She shares with us the wisdom she has gained over the last 5 decades on how to be wildly successful by being our own authentic selves.
