On the Saturday Supplement from 9am with Joe McGill, Joe will begin his journey to become fluent in Irish in a year. We’ll be Commemorating the importance of amateur drama in a poet-Civil War era, and the playwrights who wrote about it with Theatre Historian Fiona Brennan. We’ll also hear how Joe is getting on on his journey to becoming fluent in the Irish language in ‘Joe ar Thóir Líofachta/Joe in Search of Fluency’.
On the Saturday Supplement with Joe McGill we’ll have our monthly ‘In Focus’ photography slot with Domnick Walsh. We’ll hear about Real to Reel: Garech Browne & Claddagh Records by James Morrissey – a new large-format hardback book together with a vinyl box set celebrating the life of Guinness heir Garech Browne and his quest to preserve Ireland’s musical and spoken-word heritage with Claddagh Records. We’ll also hear from a London actor with Ballinskelligs heritage who is performing a one man play called ‘The Cable’ set in the time of the Transatlantic Cable on Valentia Island more than 150 years ago.
On the Saturday Supplement with Joe McGill we’ll hear about the Kerry Archaeological and Historical Society who actively promotes the history, archaeology, and heritage of our beautiful county. Asdee’s Mairead Hanlon will tell us about a fundraiser she organized for Community Cenacolo in Knock. The organisation provides a free, fully residential programme to help people suffering from addiction to change their lives. We’ll also hear from North Kerry Poet James A. Kelly on his new collection of poems. We’ll have Kerry County Council Creative Kingdom letting you know what’s going on in the Arts world.
On the Saturday Supplement from 9am with Joe McGill we’ll have our monthly ‘In Focus’ photography slot with Domnick Walsh. We’ll hear a Tribute to Timothy Lyne who passed away recently. Tim spent 40 years working at the Valentia Coast Guard Radio Station. In addition to being a community activist he played a key role in the Valentia RNLI. We’ll also hear another episode of ‘A Blas of Kerry; Women in Food’ featuring Maura O’Connor Foley author of My Wild Atlantic Kitchen: Recipes and Recollections. Maura has made a career in food in Kenmare spanning over six decades. We’ll also hear from Tom Fitzgerald about his new novel based in Kerry called ‘The Truth about Lies’.

In these two episodes we’ll hear from Scoil Bhréanainn in Portmagee and Scoil Náisiúnta Cillín Liath in Dromid. It’s 30 years since the wake of world record breaking cow Big Bertha took place on the 31st of December 1993; we’ll hear about the legendary bovine!! The first two episodes will feature Mary O’Brien Browne who along with her husband Alan Browne fish for Oysters in Tralee bay and Wilma’s Killorglin Farmhouse Cheese. Also a new 10 part series called Logainmneacha Chiarraí where national school children in Kerry will tell the stories and meaning of local place names in their area. We’ll hear from the school children of Scoil Derarca, on Valentia Island and the school children of Curraheen National School in Glenbeigh. We’ll also hear from Dr Colum Kenny, professor emeritus of Dublin City University, who gifted three drawings to the National Gallery, which he acquired in England during research for his recently published; ‘Kenmare: History and Survival’
