The Word Improv Community is a writing community united by our passion for writing and a common challenge: Word Improv. A Word Improv challenge is where participants write a “Story” using a set of “new” words. A “Story” is broadly defined to include a tale, poem, skit, etc. There is no character minimum or limit. You can learn new words and participate in Word Improv, as well as in the Pass-the-Baton interviews by following @WordSleuth on Instagram!
Pass-the-Baton Interviews on Instagram Live are interviews where contributors to our Word Improv challenges interview one another.
Eric Gee has administered personality-based life coaching for more than twenty years. He built a successful education company that used his personality typing method to better the lives of more than twenty thousand students, parents, and teachers. As creator of the Youtopia Project website and the Youtopia 16 assessment, he has disseminated his method to over half a million users since the website’s creation in 2016. His coaching program has been used in companies (Hulu, Disney), universities, and over forty school districts.
Eric graduated from UCLA, where he studied English literature and screenwriting. Coincidentally, he’s also a classically trained pianist, backyard-trained barbecue dilettante, three-time fantasy football champion, professional mentor, and amateur magician. He owns Youtopia Creative, a shared creative workspace in Los Angeles, where he acts as both life coach and infinite Pez dispenser of saccharine bits of 80s and 90s pop culture.

Leigh Ann Hughes is a happily married mother of three daughters with a rambunctious dog, a sassy kitten, and a laid back bearded dragon. Born and raised in the wonderfully small state of Delaware, she never imagined her life to grow any bigger than those borders. Being an avid reader all of her life, and even writing some as a young girl, she found that creativity again after the birth of her children. Ranging from picture to Elementary chapter to Middle School chapter books, Leigh Ann plans to publish them all.

Debra Borchert has had many careers. She debuted, at the age of five, as a model at a local
country club where her crinoline petticoat dropped to her ankles in the middle of the runway.
Since then, she’s been a clothing designer, actress (starring in her first television commercial
with Jeff Daniels for S.O.S. Soap Pads), TV show host, spokesperson for high-tech companies,
marketing and public relations professional, technical writer for Fortune 100 companies, and
author.
She is the author of the Château de Verzat series—following headstrong and independent women
and the four-hundred loyal families who protect a Loire Valley château and vineyard during the
French Revolution—Her Own Legacy 2022, Her Own Revolution 2023, Her Own War 2024, and
a companion cookbook to the series, Soups of Château de Verzat, 2023.
A graduate of the Fashion Institute of Technology, she weaves her knowledge of textiles and
clothing design throughout her French historical fiction. She lives in the Pacific Northwest with
her family and standard poodle, named after a fine French Champagne.

C.R. Rice is a fantasy/sci-fi writer, currently immersing you in the Realm Series. As someone who grew up in a small town, she has always loved escaping into the world of fantasy, paranormal and legend. C.R. has dedicated herself to creating that same opportunity to anyone who wants to escape the boring reality of real life. Leslie Sommers holds a B.A. in English with a concentration in Creative Fiction Writing from Montclair State University. Leslie was born and raised in New Jersey and inherited her love of reading from her mother. Janice Sommers holds a B.S. in Education from Seton Hall University. Her passion for books was passed on to the next generation of her family. A former English professor, Jeannée Sacken is now a photojournalist who travels to the ends of the earth, documenting the lives of women and children. She also photographs wildlife and is deeply committed to the conservation of endangered species. Described by MKE Lifestyle magazine as “Indiana Jones with a camera,” Jeannée has summitted Mt. Kilimanjaro, canoed the Zambezi River, kayaked the North Pacific, and driven through far-western Mongolia in a blizzard. Many of her adventures have been fictionalized into her novels. Reading has always been a major part of Mila's life. For her, there was always a strong fascination with fiction stories and Mila loved finding ways to connect with the characters in these books.

In 1730, the enigmatic Mr Chicken was the last private resident of the now famous No.10 Downing Street, London, before graciously moving next door to accommodate the nation’s line of Prime Ministers who would take residence there for the next 300 years. Nothing more is known about Mr Chicken. Until today, when he’s now a writer, screenwriter, director and film-maker who sometimes goes by the name M.A.Batten.
After winning over 150 creative awards during a 25-year career in advertising, he decided to start telling stories that didn't involve brands or their ridiculous reasons to buy. He is now collecting awards for his screenplays and films including Best Screenplay at TMFF (USA), two first places at NYC Midnight (USA), finalist at Page International Awards (UK), semi-finalist at 39th Elche (Spain), and a list of Official Selections. His first short film HUNT starred Byron J Brochmann (X-Men, Unbreakable), his second short film MISSING starred Laraine Dix (Black Mirror, Bodyguard), and his award-winning feature film screenplay CAPTURE was written for Rupert Grint (Harry Potter series).

Michael Anthony Adams, Jr. is originally from Whittier, CA. He's the author of two novels, five collections of short stories, seven collections of poetry, and a memoir. He holds a master’s degree in Philosophy from the New School for Social Research in New York City. As a teenager, he was the lead vocalist and lyricist for Richmond, VA-based hardcore band Broken Chains of Segregation. Since finding the passion, Joseph can't imagine life without stories rattling around his head. Eager to make up for lost time, he's been fairly prolific, and his short stories have appeared in several anthologies and literary magazines. Riven is an American fantasy author, historian, freelancer, and content creator, writing everything from flash fiction and gift books to full-length novels and a published master’s thesis on Henry IV of England. As a professional writer and fervent scholar, P. L. has devoted more than a decade to studying, reading, writing, and breathing all things fiction.

Sarena Straus. "I write novels for the curious and adventurous, for people who are intrigued by a “what happens if,” scenario, and who like to explore the outcomes. My characters are ordinary people who find out that they are capable of extraordinary things and discover that one person can truly make a difference.
After receiving a BA in art history and political science from Barnard, I graduated from Fordham University School of Law. I then worked for five years at the Bronx District Attorney’s Office (BXDA), where I prosecuted sex crimes and child abuse cases. After leaving BXDA, I published a true-crime memoir, Bronx DA: True Stories from the Sex Crimes and Domestic Violence unit (Barricade, 2006). In 2010, my book sold as a TV Pilot to CBS/Paramount.
I’ve gone on to publish numerous legal articles and works of poetry, and I was an editor for a legal magazine. For a few years, I was also a talking head, commenting on current criminal cases in the media on tv and radio.
Today, I live in the Hudson Valley, NY with my husband, our two children (also budding writers), two naughty Labrador retriever ladies, and two barn cat boys. I’m now working on sequels to my debut novel ReInception and will keep you posted about them on my site.
When not writing or lawyering, I love to scuba dive, take photographs, and travel off the beaten path. I’ll swap diving or courtroom stories with you all day long or happily talk to you about books–writing them or reading them!"

Since childhood, Melissa has been a passionate reader and writer. Cap'n The Floral Sailor was born and raised in the United Kingdom. Currently an anonymous writer, he values his privacy and prefers to keep his personal life and writing life separate. He also does enjoy the air of mystery that comes with being anonymous.
For as long as he can remember he has been writing absurd worlds, characters and stories from his vivid imagination. This passion only grew when he became a theatre technician, where he worked on the most amazing of shows and events. Ranging from fabulous West End musicals to experimental one-man studio shows. Where he made friends with talented and creative people who propelled him to start taking his writing very seriously within the past few years.
Since then he has been manically writing several stories and projects he hopes to publish soon, primarily in the medium of comics and graphic novels. However, he is learning to write plays as well as screenplays soon after.
His writing is fuelled by his life experiences, which can include the people he surrounds himself with, the media he consumes, and even disastrous adventures brought on to him by misfortune. Cap'n's writing features a sense of humour that could sum up his life story - a comedy of errors.
He loves writing absurd, theatrical stories with a cast of colourful and diverse characters set in worlds where anything is possible - letting his imagination run wild.
For now, however, despite being born in generation Z, he is no better than a boomer when it comes to social media. He shares his writing journey with everyone, aiming to foster a platform that encourages discussion about writing and our interests.
In future he may decide to become a public figure if he feels ready to be one. (Perhaps as a ten million follower special.)

Dessi Nikko is an Eastern European award-winning novelist and filmmaker.
Born in 1986 in Bulgaria, she grew up in a highly problematic post-socialism society to become a cosmopolitan rebel girl in the end. Dessi is interested in psychological fiction, dark humour, satire, all art quirky, urban, audacious.
She won her BA with a ‘Graffiti and PR’ thesis, and her MA – with a short film about school bullying that raised quite a controversy in Bulgaria.
Dessi knew she was to become a writer as soon as she learned how to write. Meanwhile, she worked as a lifeguard, an English teacher, a lifestyle magazine editor and a waitress. In this order. She is positive that these occupations were a good psychological training for her craft. Always based on her own experience and encounters, Dessi Nikko’s semi-memoir narrative is so honest that readers of her debut novel ‘Alice on a Friday Night’ are known to have googled the author to check if she was doing OK. She certainly is!

"My name is Katherine Y. Nesbitt. I am an Arizona native and 34 years old. My parents are part of the baby boomer generation. My father’s side of the family is from Canton, China ( at least that’s what it was called when they left). My mother’s side is a blend of European heritage. Since I have both Chinese and Irish in my bloodline, I joke that my ancestors on both sides were exploited to build the American Transcontinental Railroad.
I met my husband a few weeks before I turned 18 at the Arizona State DECA competition. We have been together 16 years, almost half our lives. I love to argue and engage in friendly competition because 'as steel sharpens steel so does one man do for another.' I did not think up that bit of wisdom, myself. It’s actually a Bible verse, the most quoted book in all of English Lit.
I have a Bachelor of Science in Communication from Arizona State University and at one time dreamed of being a teacher. I guess God had other plans for my life. Sometimes I wish I could go back and spare myself the challenges I’ve had to face. Then I realize that every experience both good and bad, has shaped me into who I am today. Instead of focusing on my disability, I embrace the abilities it has allotted to me. I have a jaded past that still haunts my dreams sometimes. My memories betray me as I struggle to sort through what really happened in the past but that’s the plight of psychosis, for those on the schizophrenia spectrum.
I want to use my voice to write and to advocate for others who identify as neuro divergent. While I’ve been writing my whole life, I learned proper technique and mechanics at a community outreach center that serves people with disabilities. My two writing instructors, David and Ana Fe, challenged me to grow and exposed me to different elements of storytelling.
The Kennedy administration was very progressive for that era, and true advocates for people like me and their sister Rosemary. They closed asylums in favor of community centers because we should be allowed to be part of the community. We can contribute to society, We have strengths that can be fostered. Everyone has potential but people aren’t born successful, they’re mentored. The problem is that developing people costs money and our community isn’t a top priority in the budget.
I have written one self-published novel called 'J: A Singularity Story.' It’s about a man who spends his life working in Artificial Intelligence. Upon his death, he becomes sort of a sentient being; a ghost communicating through a phone app he developed. His fiancée and her brother go on an adventure to prove that it’s not a hoax and that he has indeed reached singularity. They speak with J’s family, friends, and teachers to prove it’s really J texting back on the app from the great beyond and not just a clever chatbot. They are also trying to find an application for this new technology. The plot is driven by conflicts experienced within: family dynamics, cultural differences, grief and loss.
I have two other works that will be available later this year. One is a collection of 25 poems that will be released as an audiobook although I have not picked a platform to release it on yet. The other is a YA Romance. I haven’t decided yet if I want to release it as an audiobook, screenplay, or novel. The story centers around a young girl who gets recruited to work in a nightclub in New York City. She soon finds out that nothing is what it seems and that everyone has a secret. The plot is driven by interpersonal conflicts, socio-economic conflicts, as well as the logistics and legality of the world's oldest and most taboo industry"

Sytske is a woman who loves animals and people. She works daily with horses. Her job is to care for 10 horses. She shares in the responsibility for the training of those horses. Besides her love for her animals she has a love for art and writing. Especially writing. She started writing poetry in her native language Dutch as an adolescent to process her feelings. Later she continued in English because she met an international friend Bruce Coleman. He inspired her to evolve her writing. She wrote some short fiction beside her poetry, poetry is her true passion. She can't imagine her life without her poetry anymore.
You can learn a lot about Sytske through reading her poetry. She joined Instagram less than a year ago. She feels very welcome in this community and can be exactly who she is here. She is always looking for new challenges and ways to improve herself. That is how she found word improv and that is why she loves writing to prompts. Since not so long she overcame her fear of speaking in public by going live. This was a big step since she has a form of autism. She hopes to inspires others and be an example for others. She believes that 'Where there is a will there is a way'.

Originally born and raised on a horse ranch in Colorado in the United States, Michelle (@benign.lines) moved to Australia to travel around the country and fell in love with it instead. Michelle’s passion for poetry started when she read her first Shel Silverstein book Falling Up. Her passion for writing began when her mother gave her, her first journal and she wrote tirelessly about anything and everything she encountered. She has enjoyed writing ever since writing and submitting her first chapbook to a poetry competition in 2018.
She attained a bachelor’s degree in psychology and is working her way to earning a master’s degree in social work. Apart from writing, she enjoys playing her instruments, listening to podcasts on long walks, and going to the gym. She has a love for animals and the outdoors but is always keen for a night in with a home cooked meal.

Antony Curtis has been many things in life including a Royal Marine, a Behaviour Specialist, a Managing Director, an Assistant Principal, a photographer, a Hypnotherapist and more. Each area he moves into is influenced by the ones that came before it. He has written non-fiction books based on research and work carried out in schools and has extensive experience with children and behaviour.
