Conflict is one of the most paradoxical things I’ve encountered—in my own life and in the lives of my clients. For those of us who have been shaped by good girl conditioning, conflict most often feels like danger and disconnection. But when it happens within a container of safety and self-connection, it becomes a doorway to vulnerability, intimacy, and power. In this episode, I explore why we avoid conflict and share personal stories that demonstrate the freedom you can find when you say what needs to be said. Here’s what I cover:

  • How the emotional burden of unspoken words lives in the body
  • How cultural and gender conditioning teach people socialized as women to stay silent
  • Two real-life examples of how I apply what I teach about conflict and communication
  • Why self-love and compassion are essential for knowing when and how to speak up
  • How practicing the skills to have hard conversations leads to freedom and connection

Because every one of us has been raised with the good girl rules—to be nice, agreeable, and never rock the boat—almost every woman I work with has the habit of over-apologizing. You’re capable, you’re accomplished, and you work hard, yet “sorry” slips out at the beginning of every sentence. In this episode, we explore how over-apologizing hurts you and how to practice a different way of showing up. Here’s what I cover:

  • How over-apologizing lowers your authority in other people's eyes and trains your own brain to see yourself as less valuable
  • Why it’s important to consider what you’re trying to accomplish with your apology
  • Why pausing before you speak is the foundation for breaking your over-apologizing habit
  • The power you’ll reclaim when you replace “I’m sorry” with “thank you”
  • Why increasing your capacity for discomfort is key to stopping over-apologizing
  • A practical homework assignment to complete your own apology audit

When you stop outsourcing your safety, belonging, and worth, you discover the freedom of authenticity–of knowing who you are and what you want. In this episode, I speak with Béa Albina about her new book, End Emotional Outsourcing: How to Overcome Your Codependent, Perfectionist, and People-Pleasing Habits. You’ll hear how this book not only outlines a clear path to end this painful way of living, but reframes emotional outsourcing in powerful new ways. Here’s what we cover:

  • The definition of emotional outsourcing and how it shows up in our relationships, careers, and decision-making
  • Why emotional outsourcing is a brilliant survival strategy, not a personality flaw
  • The truth about authenticity and why it’s often the cost of people-pleasing and perfectionism
  • How emotional outsourcing lives in the nervous system and why healing has to include the body
  • Béa’s five-part process for rebuilding self-trust through small, “kitten-sized” steps

Beatriz (Béa) Victoria Albina, NP, MPH, SEP (she/her) is a UCSF-trained Family Nurse Practitioner, Somatic Experiencing Practitioner, Master Certified Somatic Life Coach, author of the forthcoming "End Emotional Outsourcing: a Guide to Overcoming Codependent, Perfectionist and People Pleasing Habits" ( Sept 30, Hachette Balance) and Breathwork Meditation Guide with a passion for helping humans socialized as women to reconnect with their bodies, regulate their nervous systems and rewire their minds, so they can break free from codependency, perfectionism and people pleasing and reclaim their joy.

Do you edit parts of yourself out of relationships because you're afraid of how people will react? Do you self-silence when you know what you have to say might not be pleasing to others? There is real discomfort in showing up authentically because it means risking rejection from the people we’re closest to. But the alternative comes with its own pain: the sadness and loneliness of not being seen for who we truly are. Neither type of discomfort is easy to face, but in this episode, I share how you can choose between them and take small, brave steps toward relationships where you can be fully seen. Here’s what I cover:

  • The two types of discomfort that people pleasing creates in relationships
  • Why it’s easy to choose authenticity in some relationships but not others—and why that difficulty is completely normal
  • A personal story about a friendship where I felt the pull between hiding and being seen
  • Why loving the parts of yourself that used to hide is essential for change
  • Questions to help you identify where you can choose authenticity in your relationships

When you’re asked to take on extra work, stay late at the office, or do a favor for a friend or family member, do you ever say “yes” automatically, without thinking about what it will actually cost you? This habit is known as auto-accommodating, and it’s so common among people pleasers that I've decided to dedicate an episode to it. In this episode, we explore the programming behind auto-accommodating and how to practice pausing before you respond so your answer is actually aligned with your needs and desires. Here’s what I cover:

  • How we are programmed to conflate accommodation with reward, safety, and connection
  • 3 questions to help you understand the part of yourself that habitually auto-accommodates
  • How toxic capitalism reinforces the idea that our worth comes from serving others at our own expense
  • Why going back and revising an automatic “yes” will help you build your pause muscle
  • How to avoid self-judgment around your fear of saying “no”
  • A phrase to use when you want to contribute without auto-accommodating

Have you ever caught yourself in a self-doubt spiral, wondering if you’re overreacting, if you’re missing something, or if everyone else just knows better than you? The experience of self-doubt is so familiar for women, especially because of the patriarchal system we live in. But you deserve to feel confident in your emotions and your assessments. In this episode, I dive into why it feels so automatic to doubt ourselves and how you can begin to change that inner monologue. Here’s what I cover:

  • What internal self-doubt actually sounds like
  • Examples of behaviors that stem from self-doubt
  • How Dr. Becky Kennedy explains the development of self-doubt in children
  • How patriarchy gives boys and girls very different messages about the validity of their self-doubt
  • The two voices inside us as women—the voice of care and the voice of self–and how to balance them
  • An exercise to help you work with both voices so you can feel more confident

I’m so excited to welcome Katherine Golub to the podcast today. Katherine and I have so much in common–not only our journeys of breaking free from good girl rules, but also our commitment to community organizing and social change. She is a coach for leaders and activists who want to continue showing up for their communities without burning out. In this conversation, we explore the polarity between personal and collective needs, and how radical discernment can help you step into the life you want. Here’s what we cover:

  • Why we have to choose to take care of our needs before we can do so
  • The definition of radical discernment and how it helps balance personal and collective care
  • What resonance actually looks like and how it can help when you're overwhelmed
  • The importance of only focusing on the next right thing

In this conversation, I’m joined by the author of Sovereign, hypnotist, and fellow ex-Mormon, Michaelann Gardner. Sovereign explores chronic pain, marriage, and faith in a way that connects to the experiences and stories of so many women—even those who don’t share the same religious background. It’s about sex, disordered eating, and divorce, but it’s also about finding your desire and allowing it to guide you into a promised land that may look different from what you imagined. Here’s what we cover:

  • How the story of Adam and Eve became a framework to explore ideas about faith, bodies, and reconciliation
  • How the wisdom of desire can act as a powerful guide if we trust it to lead us
  • The reawakening of hunger and desire as a catalyst for telling the truth to ourselves and others
  • How cultural conditioning impacts the way both men and women show up in marriage and sex
  • The disconnect between the church’s view of sex as “sacred” and the lived experience of sex
  • How the pain of disconnection and dishonesty manifests in the bodies

In the self-help space, it’s easy to assume someone else has it all together. The truth is, nobody does. While I have some answers—and I certainly can provide help to stop people-pleasing—I’m still learning, too. Today, I’m sharing recent changes and insights from my own life to offer an honest look at the messy, yet beautiful, journey of healing—and to remind you that joy, grief, and desire can all coexist. Here’s what I cover:

  • How religious scriptures shaped my beliefs about worthiness–and how I’ve grown into a deeper sense of connection
  • Why rest, joy, pleasure, and loving your f*cking life are powerful acts of resistance
  • Why I stepped away from social media and how it has allowed me to show up more fully in my life
  • How retreating to my love of fiction provided me with a soul-deep relief
  • How I have become more fully present in my body and my power through pleasure
  • How I learned that “Am I enough?” was never the right question to ask

I hear people use the word “stuck” all the time to describe problems or situations, but what does it really mean? You might feel stuck in a relationship you want to change but don’t know how, or caught in a pattern you keep repeating even when it no longer feels good. I’ve been reflecting on what it really means to be stuck—not just to understand it better, but to find language and tools that actually help. In this episode, I’m sharing what I’ve discovered to offer you deeper context around the feeling of being stuck and what you can do about it. Here’s what I cover:

  • Why feeling stuck in people-pleasing isn’t your fault
  • How feeling stuck in one area can have a big impact on your life overall
  • The insight from Esther Perel that shaped my thinking on this topic
  • Why stuck systems have all stability and no change and what we need instead
  • The key to change: teaching your parts that it’s safe to feel a little unsafe
  • How to begin experimenting with authenticity in small, safe ways

Living with ADHD means it doesn’t disappear once you find success–you can be kind, loving, respectful and still show up with your ADHD when you connect with yourself and take accountability. Today, I’m bringing you a conversation from the I Have ADHD podcast, where I was interviewed by Kristen Carder. We talk about my journey of being diagnosed with ADHD in midlife, the relationship between neurodivergence and people-pleasing, and how I became an ex-good girl. Here’s what we cover:

  • How “ADHD brain” can impact your life even when you have good intentions
  • How my ADHD diagnosis later in life brought both clarity and grief
  • My approach to seeking help managing perimenopause
  • Why self-abandonment is at the heart of people-pleasing
  • What it truly means to be an ex-good girl and how to reclaim your voice

As women, we receive so much messaging about how big our lives are allowed to be. Whether it’s patriarchy, childhood conditioning, or the communities we’re part of, many women learn that being convenient, optimistic, and helpful makes them lovable. Even though it isn’t true, that influence often keeps us from living our lives in a bigger way. In this episode, we explore the signs that your life is too small for you and how you can start to live a life that’s as honest and expressive as you want. Here's what I cover:

  • How to recognize when your life has become too small by how your body feels
  • The most common signs that you're ready to take your life to the next level
  • Why your dreams feeling impossible or selfish is a signal that you’re ready for change
  • How resentment and irritation can show up under the surface when you feel stuck in a small life
  • How emotional suppression can lead to real issues that affect women’s health
  • An example of how my life changed when I learned how to say what needed to be said

Last week, I shared an interactive episode about people-pleasing and lying—today, we’re continuing the conversation. In this episode, I offer an approach that is based not on the morality of telling the truth, but on your values and human need for safety. We’ll take a deeper look at why we lie, the hidden costs it can have in our relationships, and how you can be more truthful in safe, selective places to foster connection to yourself and others. Here’s what I cover:

  • How good-girl programming wires us to lie in order to please and avoid conflict
  • The huge role that the nervous system plays in why we lie
  • When lying can still be a necessary and useful tool
  • How we separate children from the truth of their bodies and punish them for honesty
  • Why protecting yourself is not the same as deceiving someone else
  • How to build more honesty in your life one relationship at a time

Lying is such an interesting topic—and after working with many women who feel stuck in patterns of people-pleasing, I’ve learned that lying and truth-telling are far more complex than they may seem. I’m not talking about lies meant to cause harm, but the everyday ones we tell to keep ourselves safe and comfortable: saying we’re fine when we’re not, or yes when we mean no. In this interactive episode, I’m introducing the framework I’ll be using to explore this topic and offering reflections to help you understand your patterns around people-pleasing and lying. Here’s what I cover:

  • Why lying is not a character flaw of people-pleasers, but a survival strategy
  • How childhood experiences influence our beliefs and behaviors around truth
  • How lying creates a disconnect in our relationships—with ourselves and others
  • Why telling the truth requires internal safety and nervous system regulation
  • Reflection questions to help you notice why you may choose to lie in certain situations

Patriarchy is a system that has shaped our world for thousands of years, which can make unpacking the topic feel overwhelming. • Laws and political systems that were created to entrench patriarchy in society

Today, I’m back with part two of my conversation with Enneagram coach Wendy Montgomery. In part one, we explored the nine Enneagram types and how people-pleasing can show up for each one. Now, we’re diving into what healing these habits looks like for each type and how the Enneagram can act as a guide for transformation. Here’s what we cover:

  • Why self-awareness is key to reducing people-pleasing tendencies
  • A type-by-type analysis of how the shift away from people pleasing can happen
  • Why healing is a journey, not an arrival–even with the help of the Enneagram
  • How to offer yourself grace and compassion when overcoming people-pleasing
  • A healing message for each Enneagram type

  • Why understanding your Enneagram type can help lessen people-pleasing tendencies
  • How the Enneagram triads offer further insight into your type
  • The unique ways people-pleasing shows up for every type

So many women are not experiencing the sex, orgasms, and intimacy they genuinely want. Often, they blame themselves for this or settle for the belief that “this is just as good as it gets.” But it doesn’t have to be that way. I’m so excited to welcome back master certified coach, podcast host, and sexual pleasure and intimacy expert Danielle Savory. In this episode, we dive into the powerful themes of the newly released series "Dying for Sex" and explore the larger conversation about the self-intimacy and vulnerability that is required for women to understand and advocate for their sexual wants and needs. Here’s what we cover:

  • The harmful cultural narratives that continue to shape women’s experiences of sexuality
  • How developing intimacy with yourself helps you overcome obstacles to pleasure
  • Why our healing and exploration thrive in the presence of other women
  • How to open up a conversation around sexuality with a friend
  • The role of the body and nervous system in cultivating openness and curiosity around pleasure
  • Practical starting points for women ready to explore their sexual desire

I can't wait for you to listen!

Many women who struggle with people-pleasing often blame themselves, but these habits are usually rooted in deeper issues that are beyond our control. There can be various underlying causes, but in this episode, I share how my personal experiences with bullying have influenced my people-pleasing tendencies. If recalling your own experiences of being bullied brings up strong emotions--it’s okay to skip this episode if it feels too tender. But if you’re ready, I invite you to explore how these early wounds may have influenced your people-pleasing—and how healing starts with self-compassion, not self-criticism. Here’s what I cover:

  • An overview of the four nervous system responses—fight, flight, freeze, and fawn
  • A deep dive into the “fawn” nervous system response and how it connects bullying to people-pleasing
  • How bullying-related shame impacts our sense of worthiness
  • A visualization exercise that uses arts work to help you heal your inner child
  • Why being attuned to others’ needs might actually be a trauma response
  • A compassionate question to ask yourself that will reveal the beliefs you formed about safety and belonging

You may remember my conversation with therapist Andrea Parks about the drama triangle and how we can shift out of harmful roles in our relationships. But once we escape the drama, how do we build the deep, connected relationships we crave? In this episode, Andrea introduces the intimacy triangle and we dive into how authenticity, openness, and responsiveness create true closeness. Here's what we cover:

  • The role that vulnerability plays in intimate relationships
  • How to strengthen the three components necessary for intimacy in your relationships
  • Why it’s often difficult to develop the three components of intimacy in high-demand religions or family systems
  • Examples of how openness increases intimacy in all relationships
  • Why responsiveness is often transactional or conditional in an unhealthy system

I can’t wait for you to listen.

By training and profession Andrea is a therapist and facilitator. She is in private practice and the owner of Bloom Healing. She has a degree in Child Development and a Masters degree in Counseling psychology. She has training and experience in psychodrama, attachment, somatic bodywork, developmental trauma, grief and life transitions. Alongside her work as a trauma therapist she specializes in group therapy and loves creating spaces where individuals with diverse backgrounds can come together in community and heal. By choice and good fortune she is the mother to three children and honored to be partnered with Shawn, her closest friend and companion in life. In her free time she is a seeker of poetry, wild things, beauty and friendship.

One of the biggest challenges for people pleasers is the fear of disappointing, inconveniencing, or hurting others. As women, we have often been programmed to avoid these situations in order to maintain happy and peaceful relationships since childhood. But how can we truly find happiness and peace when we constantly betray our own wants and needs to avoid conflict and keep others satisfied? In today’s episode, I speak with Celeste Davis, who writes about deconstructing patriarchy and learning how to take up more space in the world as a woman on her Substack, Matriarchal Blessing. We explore the themes of her essay, "The Cost of Chronic Accommodation," which addresses the sacrifices women make to ensure the happiness of others—and how to break that cycle. Here's what we cover:

  • The invisible cost of never prioritizing your own desires
  • How a woman's self-sacrifice is expected and even romanticized by our society
  • Why doormat or b*tch are not your only options for how you show up–there is a middle ground where you can assert yourself
  • How social structures that depend on doing invisible work for free keep women from valuing our time and energy
  • Two unique definitions of boundaries to help you protect what is sacred to you
  • How to deal with the avalanche of emotions–fear, anxiety, shame, guilt–that you have been programmed to feel when you disappoint someone

You may have heard Dr. Crystal Hall's name on the podcast a few weeks back when I responded to the video about why women are leaving the church. Crystal comes to the church from a feminist perspective–she's doing the deep work of unpacking how patriarchy has shaped religious spaces. As a coach for women in ministry, she helps others identify and unlearn the subconscious beliefs religion has instilled about their worth, roles, and voices. Here's what we cover:

  • The influence of patriarchal programming in our society–it's something that shapes us before we even learn about feminism or religion
  • How feminist values can come to the surface through the foundation of patriarchy
  • Why resistance, recovery, and re-reading are three essential ways to engage with religion through a feminist lens
  • How coaching can bridge the gap between the theory of gender equality and its practice
  • Why grieving is part of feminist spiritual practice—especially when confronting what was lost or never offered
  • What gives us hope for the future when it comes to feminism, patriarchy, and religion

So many women blame themselves for their people-pleasing tendencies–I can’t speak up, I apologize too much, I have to avoid conflict at all costs. If you’ve ever had thoughts like these, the first thing I want you to know is that it’s not your fault, and there is nothing wrong with you. We’ve lived our entire lives in a patriarchal system that shapes how we think about ourselves as women. In this episode, I give you a peek behind the curtain of that unconscious operating system and provide a framework to explore–and change–the tendencies that lead us to believe there’s something wrong with us. Here's what I cover:

  • The unconscious limitations we have due to our programming
  • How our behaviors are shaped by a constant interplay between conscious and unconscious thoughts
  • Several examples of how to reframe self-critical thoughts so you can feel better, not worse
  • The importance of tuning into your body while practicing new thoughts
  • A visualization to help you reach toward the mindset you want—not the one you inherited
  • How imagining a younger version of yourself can build self-compassion

It’s so common to tie our worth to our weight—this message has been ingrained in us from a young age. But the truth is, no number on the scale can give you the value and worth you're searching for. I’m so excited for you to hear my conversation with Laura Conley, a coach who helps moms lose weight for the last time. We talk about how our health isn’t tied to diet culture or calorie-counting, but to reconnecting with yourself and your body from a place of love and curiosity. Here’s what we cover:

  • The impact of growing up in a society that idealizes certain body types
  • Why emotional eating—using food as a quick escape from stress–can be hard to recognize
  • How misinterpreting the body positivity movement can create more shame for some, and why it’s okay to want change
  • There is no set “prescription” for weight loss–you have to figure out what you truly want and need
  • How balancing your hunger hormones can deepen your self-connection
  • The role that systems like Big Food play in our health, habits, and ability to make positive change

After speaking with Britt Hartley in last week's episode, several listeners sent me the same video of Jared Halvorson attempting to call women back to the church. Today, I want to respond to that video and continue exploring how the tools of organized religion—Christianity in particular—were not designed with women in mind. We’ll dive into the harmful ways institutions view women and examine how patriarchy affects everyone--even those with good intentions. Here’s what I cover:

  • How institutional patriarchy teaches even the most well-meaning men to uphold systems that don't serve women
  • Why leaving the church can be an incredible reclamation of power for women
  • How women are often cast as incompetent decision-makers so that men can “rescue” them
  • The problematic rebranding of sacrifice as an investment
  • How all institutions–not just religious ones–depend on women staying small and helpful
  • What happens when women start connecting to themselves and making decisions based on what they truly believe is best for their lives

I can't wait for you to listen.

So much of our good-girl programming is rooted in religious teachings. Many of these rules keep us trapped in people-pleasing, but it’s possible to break free and develop a healthy spirituality– one that empowers you to live life the way you want. Today, I’m joined by Atheist Spiritual Director and author of No Nonsense Spirituality, Britt Hartley, to explore this transformation. Here’s what we cover:

  • Breaking down the definition of atheism and what healthy spirituality looks like
  • How to identify a high-demand religion--significant control in your life with a high cost if you leave
  • The deep connection between religion and patriarchy
  • Why different methods of healing are often necessary for women who leave religion
  • Tools to help women reconnect with themselves and figure out who they truly are
  • How religious patriarchy hurts everyone, not just women

It can be so hard for women to find reliable information about their bodies and what they truly need to be healthy. In this episode, I talk to award-winning journalist and author of The Vagina Business, Marina Gerner. Her book explores FemTech—innovations designed to genuinely support women’s health rather than mislead or market to them with misinformation. Together, we dive into the world of women’s health and knowledge can empower a vibrant female experience. Here’s what we cover:

  • An introduction to FemTech and how it’s driving progress in women’s health
  • The taboos that often block women from getting the care and support they need
  • Why female pain is often normalized instead of being properly treated
  • How to tell the difference between privacy and shame when it comes to women’s bodies
  • How scam tech and the pink tax exploit women—even in healthcare
  • Key questions to identify scam tech vs. innovations that seek to support women’s health

I can’t wait for you to listen.

Marina Gerner’s debut book is out now. THE VAGINA BUSINESS: THE INNOVATIVE BREAKTHROUGHS THAT COULD CHANGE EVERYTHING IN WOMEN’S HEALTH. Connection is a fundamental human need, yet many feel disempowered when it comes to making friends or deepening existing relationships. Today, I’m joined by connection coach Jewel Hohman to discuss the importance of strong friendships and how people-pleasing tendencies affect our ability to form meaningful bonds. Here’s what we cover:

  • How societal programming around friendship contributes to the loneliness epidemic
  • Why good girl tendencies like over-apologizing take away from the honesty that is essential to friendship
  • How cultural factors–think church or Disney–have perpetuated prioritizing romantic connection over friendship
  • The crucial role of consistency and vulnerability in creating and deepening friendships
  • How to determine when to end a friendship and do so with compassion
  • Why conflict resolution is key to stronger friendships

I can’t wait for you to listen!

When it comes to relationships, we are designed to seek safety, belonging, and connection–we all want to know that we matter. For people pleasers and perfectionists, this commonly shows up as using certain behaviors to “earn” love in return, but that often doesn’t help cultivate real connection. In this episode, I offer you ten strategies you can use to improve any relationship no matter where you are in your journey. Here’s what I cover:

  • Why the skills to repair after a rupture are a crucial part of any relationship
  • A practice to help you better understand your conflict patterns
  • Why the distinction between fault and responsibility is so important
  • 4 questions to help you figure out what is working in your relationships and do more of it
  • How understanding the difference between boundaries, expectations, and preferences will help you communicate more clearly
  • Why taking care of yourself with love and kindness is so effective for improving your relationships

I can’t wait for you to listen.

In her book, You Are Not Broken, Dr. Kelly Casperson points out the societal myth that sex is just “extra”--something to enjoy while it lasts and accept when it’s gone. I'm excited to welcome Dr. Casperson to the podcast today to discuss the impact of cultural stigmas about women's health and sexuality, and expand on last week’s episode about practical ways women can advocate for themselves when it comes to perimenopause. Here’s what we cover:

  • The narrow societal definition of who deserves a sex life and the misinformation it has caused
  • How good girl rules are often reinforced by medical professionals even when it’s not intentional
  • The female body isn’t a niche–every physician should understand it
  • Changes in women’s sexuality that can signal perimenopause: arousal, desire, pain, and orgasm
  • Why one of the biggest menopause myths is that you “get over it” at a certain point
  • The goal of perimenopause education isn’t perfection–it’s living life at the highest quality possible

I can’t wait for you to listen.

If you follow me on social media or regularly listen to this podcast, you might know that I have taken on the role of a volunteer perimenopause missionary. This stage of life has had a significant impact on me, as well as my sisters and friends—just as it does for all women at a certain point. In this episode, I investigate how the lack of information and support for women going through perimenopause ties back to one important factor: how religious teachings about Eve have influenced the way society views and treats women. Here's what we cover:

  • A poem by Danielle Coffyn that highlights the way men and women are viewed differently based on how Eve is depicted as morally and intellectually inferior
  • How the story of Eve is directly linked to so many hardships women face–from victim blaming to not receiving adequate medical care
  • Examples of good girl programming that often stops women from demanding more for themselves
  • Why it is important to listen to the message that feminine rage sends us
  • What you can do to advocate for yourself and receive the care and support you need during perimenopause

I can't wait for you to listen.

I started this podcast to contribute to the conversation around people-pleasing and perfectionism. Now, as The Ex-Good Girl Podcast reaches the 100th episode, I am extremely proud and grateful. My goal has always been to share tools, strategies, and stories to help you overcome challenges that result from good girl programming and live the life you want.

It has meant so much to hear from all of you along this journey about the skills you’ve implemented and the progress you’ve made in your lives and relationships. Today, I’m answering your questions about people-pleasing, patriarchy, and so much more. Here’s what I cover:

  • How honest conversations are often confused with conflict by people pleasers who have been conditioned to fear confrontation
  • Why open communication is key to maintaining an important relationship when you disagree
  • The importance of setting goals you know you can accomplish to maintaining the energy to work toward positive change
  • How to feel in your body whether or not it is truly your choice to please someone
  • Tips for how to talk to the men in your life about patriarchy and feminism

In this episode, you’ll hear my conversation with Amy McPhie Allebest, a writer, teacher, and feminist historian whose work has helped shape my understanding of patriarchy and expand my worldview. In her podcast, Breaking Down Patriarchy, Amy offers thought-provoking insights that inspire continued learning about the roots of patriarchy in society. Today, she shares some of those powerful ideas and personal stories, which I hope you find valuable as I have. Here’s what we cover:

  • How “good girl” programming contributes to white feminism and upholding patriarchy
  • Why feelings of fear, guilt, and shame create barriers to open-mindedness
  • Several tools for accepting discomfort in order to effectively engage with learning about patriarchy
  • Why working to educate yourself is a valuable first step from silence to speaking up
  • How to create a space for yourself where it's safe to learn and change your mind
  • Why grieving your past beliefs or harm you’ve caused is essential to moving forward
  • The importance of generosity and understanding in growing from what you learn instead of self-blaming

I can't wait for you to listen.

Have you ever felt resentment building, only to realize your own choices have led you to that place? A huge source of resentment is mistakenly blaming others for decisions that we are responsible for, but recognizing your power to control this can be transformative. In this episode, my guest, Sara Wilhelm, shares her recent breakthrough in understanding her resentment, and how she has made a plan to move forward in the direction of living more according to her values. Here’s what we cover:

  • The steps to take you from feeling resentful to taking action
  • How people pleasing disconnects us from our true feelings and desires
  • A method to help deal with the discomfort you feel when you stop people pleasing
  • How women are programmed to believe that our time is not actually our own
  • Why finding a way to take action helps stop resentment towards other people or larger systems
  • The importance of self-compassion as you work through your resentment

I want every woman to have the ability to create a life of her choosing, filled with the freedom to embrace her desires. I’ve worked hard to create a program that helps women achieve this, but the real magic of my Stop People Pleasing program comes from the women themselves who are willing to take risks, expand their capacity for feeling uncomfortable, and develop the skills needed to live authentically without the weight of constantly pleasing others. In this episode, I’m so grateful to be joined by four amazing women from my program–Allyssya, Sara, Stephanie, and Susan–who share their journeys with people pleasing. You'll hear about the changes they have made in their daily lives and in how they see themselves. Here’s what we cover:

  • How a group program provides encouragement from other women on the same path
  • Why trust in yourself is crucial to turn your focus to your own desires
  • How people pleasing has a cost, and you often pay for it with your peace and happiness
  • Examples of which areas in life people-pleasing tendencies are most common
  • Why coaching provides you with the freedom to implement what you've learned whenever the time is right for you
  • How to start living a life you created instead of living a life someone chose for you when you stop people pleasing

Mistakes are a part of life–we all make them, whether it’s with ourselves, with others, or in pursuit of our goals. Even as we grow emotionally and strive for greater self-connection, our inner critical voice often shames us for every misstep. In this episode, I explore why self-compassion is key when we mess up, and how leaving self-criticism behind is essential to lasting growth. Here’s what I cover:

  • Examples that illustrate the way we were conditioned to fear making mistakes and the lasting impact this has
  • How to address the parts of yourself that are triggered when you mess up—the critic and the part that feels like you are in trouble—with compassion so you can move forward in a healthy way
  • Why caring for those parts allows us to separate ourselves from the mistakes we make
  • Sentences to say when you mess that preserve your self-respect and the sincerity of your apology
  • How people pleasers often conflate their self-worth with their actions, but you deserve to make a mistake and recover from it
  • Four questions to ask after you make a mistake to inspire a more loving response from yourself

When it comes to goals and to-do lists, the unrealistic expectations we often have lead to feelings of inadequacy and overwhelm. Whether you want to set a goal for the new year or achieve a task this weekend, today’s guest, Goli Kalkhoran, shares why we often overreach and how to set practical and fulfilling goals that lead to success instead of shame. Here’s what we cover:

  • How it's possible to change your mindset so you feel good about yourself no matter what you achieve in a day
  • An exercise to illuminate the unreasonable nature of the level of productivity we often expect from ourselves
  • Why the perceptions of other people heavily factor into the unrealistic goals of people-pleasers
  • The idea of “time optimism” and how we use it to punish ourselves by ignoring the context of what is actually going on in our lives
  • Why focusing on only one goal for the year is an effective strategy
  • How to choose just one goal by using an exercise to examine areas of insufficiency in your life and asking yourself “What's the rush?”

I can’t wait for you to listen.

When we don’t get to cross something off of our to-do list, we often blame ourselves for poor time management. However, the founder and creator of the Time Hacker Method, Vikki Yaffe, joins me today to offer the perspective that the problem is not us, but the mindset about time we’ve been taught to have. Vikki teaches people the skills to collaborate with time more flexibly, and I’m so grateful to have her on the podcast to share tips and tools to stop feeling shame around time and trust ourselves instead. Here’s what we cover:

  • How good girl rules overlap with myths about time management
  • The downfalls of the systems, norms, and tools that we have been taught that are supposed to help us with our time
  • How the false truths we were taught about time stem from exploitation
  • When we try to manipulate time by overscheduling ourselves, it prevents collaboration with time and a relationship with ourselves
  • An example of what it looks like when someone is caught up in the misunderstanding of time
  • Why your brain is the most effective tool to make lasting change with your time

“I just need a really good plan,” is a phrase that offers overachievers a sense of security, but the cycle of planning is often what holds us back from achieving our goals. In today’s episode, Dr. Priyanka Venugopal joins me to discuss why plans alone don’t deliver the desired results and how embracing a different, more informed strategy can lead to greater clarity, growth, and success. Here’s what we cover:

  • Why just having a plan on paper is never going to create lasting results because we have to go the extra step to evaluate what actually works
  • How planning triggers the reward centers of the brain because you are imagining doing the plan perfectly, but this often leads to inaction instead of achievement
  • We know we can do hard things, but a plan shifts our focus to wishfulness instead of doing the work
  • How to speak to yourself with compassion so your evaluation doesn't feel like self-punishment
  • 5 questions to help you uncover the reason your plan didn’t work and how to adjust moving forward
  • It’s possible to allow yourself to feel your emotions while also being curious and realistic
  • Why it’s important to acknowledge your efforts every step of the way - not just when you get a result

The hopes and expectations we have going into the holiday season make this time of year particularly susceptible to feeling grief. In this week's conversation with Susie Ruth, an end-of-life coach and grief specialist, we discuss strategies for navigating grief and offer insights on how best to support someone grieving during the holidays. Here’s what we cover:

  • The reason why we are more susceptible to feeling grief during the holidays
  • Why the acronym B.R.A.T.S. will help you remember phrases and actions that DO NOT help you process your grief
  • The process of learning more about grief is the first step to understanding how you can grieve and live at the same time
  • How simply acknowledging your grief and that it’s okay to feel is an important healing practice
  • How to use the W.A.I.T. acronym to guide you in supporting someone who is grieving
  • Why there is grief that comes with any transition in life

When we cause harm to someone else, the good girl tendency is to feel shame and defensiveness. Instead, if we get to a place where we are generous and can grieve our mistakes, we can move on to be better versions of ourselves. In this episode, I talk about how the themes of Wicked relate to my journey of becoming an ex-good girl and the importance of self-compassion when you have to question your beliefs. Here’s what I cover:

  • How the representation of power structures fueled by patriarchy in the Wicked movie relate to our society
  • Why you can't grow into better versions of yourself without acknowledging that past versions made mistakes
  • How my experience as a member of the Mormon church has similarities to Glinda’s character arc in Wicked
  • Two good-girl beliefs that are roadblocks to learning from our mistakes and becoming better friends and allies
  • How we have been conditioned to react to shame and think negatively about changing our mind
  • Why we often jump to defend our beliefs instead of being open to the idea of exploring new ones

In this episode, you’ll get a glimpse into my musical-loving heart as I discuss the feminist themes of the movie, Wicked, and moments in the film that took me back to a time when I had to realize a hard truth. Here’s what I cover:

  • Why we all deserve to have beliefs consistent with having autonomy and being able to find what we like and what we want to do
  • How the song “Defying Gravity” helped me through a challenging time in my life
  • Why the realization that something that provides goodness and safety is actually doing us harm is a shared experience for many
  • Each of us is worthy of being in relationships, friendships, and careers that do not exist inside circumstances that require us to ignore part of what is going on in order to be happy
  • An important truth about people pleasing and gender equality is illuminated in an essay by Celeste Davis

It’s normal to want to bypass feelings of fear, worry, and sorrow during this uncertain time, but we miss the opportunity to create a vulnerable, trusting relationship with ourselves and our feelings if we send these big emotions into exile. In this episode, I discuss how moving forward starts with processing our emotions. Here’s what I cover:

  • Why distraction from difficult emotions is not a bad thing when it’s balanced with emotional connection to yourself
  • A visualization exercise to help you process your feelings in a way that builds deep emotional trust
  • Taking the time to be with your emotions will help create the sense of safety and security needed to move forward in a way that feels good to you
  • How I processed the uncertainty I feel with understanding and care for myself

Do you feel trapped by the “rules” of modern dating? I’m thrilled to be joined by dating coach Lily Womble in today's episode to talk about how to break free from those dumb dating rules. I want each one of you to find the relationship you’re meant to be in, and that starts with making sure you never have to settle in your dating life ever again.

Here’s what we cover:

  • How Lily Womble created a dating solution so she'd never have to settle again
  • Feeling free in your dating life starts with shedding your people-pleasing tendencies
  • The way we show up in our dating life is influenced by what we were taught growing up
  • Several “dumb dating rules” and how to break them so you can find the right relationship
  • Why getting specific about your preferences will help you seek the right partner

Lily Womble is sparking a feminist revolution in the way we date and find love. She was one of the top matchmakers in the U.S., but after setting up hundreds of dates, Lily realized that the answer to finding love was much deeper than a setup, and that the way we are taught to date is still stuck in the patriarchal dark ages. So many of us women have not been properly educated about our bodies and how to know what is best for them. Today, I’m joined by Dr. Stephanie Hack to discuss how we can empower ourselves to advocate for what we want and need.

Here's what we cover:

  • Hygiene advice for women that reflects love and care for ourselves and rejects the shame we are taught to feel
  • How certain programming targets the shame women feel surrounding our bodies to sell to us
  • General female anatomy and how using the anatomically correct terms helps normalize them
  • Why women need to know our bodies so we can speak up about the care we want and deserve to receive
  • The more conversations we have about perimenopause and menopause, the more women can learn about what our bodies go through during that time
  • How YOU are the one who should ultimately decide how to take care of YOUR body

Stephanie Hack, MD, MPH, is a board-certified ob/gyn, podcast host, speaker, and founder of a women's health educational platform. Her special interests in health education and women's health empowerment have led to a career spanning two decades.

It’s important to remember that you’re not alone, and we can support each other as we continue to learn about women's health. I can't wait for you to listen.

On my recent trip to Bolivia, I had an interaction that reignited my thoughts on feminism. In this episode, I explore why feminism remains a vital lens for understanding our world and shaping our actions. Here's what I cover:

  • How my journey with feminism started with negative perceptions because of my upbringing in the Mormon Church
  • Why feminism is important for EVERYONE, not just women
  • How We Should All Be Feminists by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie opened my eyes to the broader implications of gender equality
  • The story of when I spoke up to advocate for women during my trip
  • Why we still have work to do when it comes to feminism being inclusive

What have you been apologizing for lately?

I’ve realized I’ve been apologizing for everything, and in most cases, none of my actions have warranted an apology.

Tune in this week to slow down and take a moment to examine the things you apologize for. Do they all actually warrant an apology, or has your “good-girl” programming been taking over? Join me as I share my two hard and fast rules for when to apologize and learn how to get yourself out of auto-pilot to a place where you can honor your needs unapologetically. This week, my guests and I invite you to join a conversation we’ve been having over the last few years about women in business and the power of using, or not using, our voices in the face of cancel culture and online scrutiny.

I’m thrilled to welcome Sandy Connery and Jeni Barcelos, friends, business owners, and co-founders of Marvelous Software. Sandy and Jeni, with their courage and resilience, share their experience facing the internet mob in 2020, how they navigated the situation while keeping their business afloat, and what they wish they could have done differently.

As we delve into this timely topic, we’ll explore how to show up thoughtfully online and engage constructively with one another, even amidst social unrest and differing opinions.

We might stir up some controversy, but we believe that sometimes, embracing your authentic self is worth a bit of trouble. I can’t wait for you to listen!

I am so excited to share my story with you of how I and three of my travel companions and friends came to found Yapay Bolivia, a nonprofit organization dedicated to alleviating poverty through sustainable healthcare solutions.

This isn’t your average story–it’s a tale of thrilling and sometimes frightening medical events, the kindness shown to me by some of the most inspiring and wonderful women I’ve ever met, and the profound transformation I underwent. It's a story of compassion for the previous version of myself that made all of this possible.

I am incredibly proud of Yapay Bolivia's work and truly grateful that it’s a part of my life. The work I engage in through this organization exists outside of my roles as a mother, wife, and professional—it’s something just for me. I would love for every woman out there to have something like this, whether that means founding a nonprofit or taking small steps toward anything that brings joy and impact to her life. Even the smallest beginnings can lead to significant, positive ripple effects. My journey of wanting something just for me has turned into a meaningful organization that makes a tangible impact on the lives of women and children in Bolivia. I hope it inspires you to pursue something you genuinely want to do, and I can’t wait for you to listen.

PS. If you’d like to donate to Yapay Bolivia, an organization where 100% of donations go directly to impactful projects, your support can help us expand our programs to reach a larger community. Please check out https://yapaybolivia.org/ to learn more and make a difference.

I am so grateful for my conversation with this week’s guest, Colleen Kachmann, where we tackle an important and often tricky topic: drinking. Tune in as we explore how drinking is tied to perfectionism and people pleasing and how, thanks to her own journey, Colleen is helping women rise above it.

Colleen is a Certified Master Life & Recovery Coach who uses cutting-edge strategies in nervous system regulation, growth mindset, positive psychology, and self-directed neuroplasticity to help women reconnect with a higher sense of purpose so they can feel passionate and powerful again. She holds a Bachelor of Science in education, a Master of Science in coaching, and a professional certificate in Women’s Functional and Integrative Medicine.

Through her own experience with alcoholism, Colleen founded Recover with Colleen after realizing that being “sober” is not a good goal. Pursuing happiness instead of sobriety is the ONLY way to reclaim your power. Once you realize that you can actually trust yourself, the only rule you need to follow is your intuition – you just need to learn how to listen.

Colleen helps women bypass the stigma and drama that society associates with sobriety by focusing on what’s really important – our relationship with ourselves. Her passion is to help women liberate themselves from the oppressive belief that there is something fundamentally broken or flawed about them so that they can unlock a higher level of purpose, passion, and power.

I can’t wait for you to listen.

PLEASE NOTE that while Colleen's approach is empowering, it might not be suitable for individuals with alcohol use disorder or active alcohol addiction. If you or someone you know is struggling with severe alcohol issues, please seek professional help tailored to those needs.

With everything happening in our world right now, especially politically here in the United States, we need to talk about the female double blind–the impossible double standards to which women are held that create no-win situations for us. So many examples of this show up in our everyday lives and are perpetuated by the media, and it needs to stop.

In this episode, I delve into these double standards and the language that reinforces them, all aimed at keeping women from attaining leadership and power. As strong women, it’s time to dissect, understand, and reject the female double bind, no matter where you fall on the political spectrum. It’s time to see these double standards, call them out, and hold those perpetuating them accountable. The female double bind is always a trap, but together, we have the power to reject and rise above it. I can’t wait for you to listen.

Did you know that people pleasing can be subtle–even sneaky? People pleasing goes far beyond the stereotypical inability to say “no.” In this episode, I reveal the people pleasing tendencies that catch us off guard–things like excessive politeness, perfectionism, and difficulty setting boundaries. Because it can show up in so many different ways, you need both deep self-connection and a capacity for discomfort to break free from people pleasing. Join me to learn how to recognize all of your people pleasing behaviors and how to increase your threshold for discomfort so you can start living as your authentic self. I’m so grateful for my beautiful conversation with this week’s guest, Angie Wilson. Angie Wilson is a certified life coach specializing in helping women love their lives after divorce. With a master's degree in social work, Angie brings a rich background of experience to her coaching practice. She worked as a therapist and case manager for two years before dedicating 15 years to being a full-time homeschooling mom to her four amazing kids.

In this episode, we dive into our shared background of growing up in conservative, religious families and how this experience impacted our people pleasing tendencies and years of perfectionating. Most importantly, we talk about our journeys to the other side–when we stopped looking outside ourselves for answers and started tuning into our intuition, needs, and desires. Angie's journey, one through divorce, was the most challenging experience of her life. Emerging stronger and more authentic, she transformed into a confident, independent woman.

Now, Angie is passionate about guiding other women through recovery after divorce, helping them heal, grow, and find joy and fulfillment. With her compassionate approach and personal insight, Angie empowers her clients to embrace their new beginnings with confidence and optimism, and she brings that same energy to our conversation. I can’t wait for you to listen.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to sit down with Allyssya Gossett, Abby Wolfson, and Jayne Newman to dig into what it's like to be a woman programmed to people please—and what it's like to be a woman who stops.

Allyssya is an educator and life coach who helps women step outside their comfort zone and into confidence so they can live the life they imagine. Abby is a child sleep coach, a parent coach to single moms by choice, a former pediatric nurse practitioner, and a mom of three. And Jayne is a self-described recovering people pleaser with a familiar story: good times, bad times—life—but one that keeps getting better as she goes.

All three of these remarkable women have gone through the Stop People Pleasing program and done the incredibly hard work of learning to live honestly and authentically despite other people’s discomfort. In the episode, each of them shares what the process has been like, how their world has shifted, and what happened that they didn't expect—like how eliminating people pleasing hasn't made them selfish but instead made them value their wants and needs equally. Or how eliminating people pleasing hasn’t meant changing their personality but showing up as their real self. Finally, they share about how hard this work is and how the support of other women makes them feel brave enough to do it. I hope this episode will help you find clarity, solidarity, and courage wherever you are on the journey to stop people pleasing.

Welcome to part two of my series on how to make lasting, positive changes in your life. In part one, I shared my framework for change and three things you need to make it work: awareness, capacity, and skills. In this episode, I share a conversation I had during a coaching call with an amazing client. During this call, we discussed how she uses awareness, capacity, and the skills she's been learning in our sessions to stop abandoning herself and stop people pleasing. I am so grateful that she agreed to share this snippet from her session so that you can hear how awareness, capacity, and skills facilitate the shift to honoring yourself in real-life situations for lasting, positive change. After you listen, don’t forget to sign up for From Stuck to Secure, my masterclass and workshop series kicking off on June 25th, so you, too, can feel confident and secure as you learn to honor your needs and show up for yourself.

I’m excited to welcome Danielle Savory back to the show this week. Danielle is a master-certified coach, podcast host, and expert in neuropsychology, mindfulness, sexual pleasure, and intimacy. When she last joined us in episode 25, “Sexual Power with Danielle Savory,” she left us with the wisdom that “a woman's ability to be present in her body, to seek out and create pleasure for herself, to know what she wants and needs, and to be able to ask for it is the pinnacle of self-connection.” In this episode, we take a deep dive into what this means and explore the importance of giving ourselves permission to experience pleasure. Internal abuse and habitual social conditioning both take a toll on us, not just mentally but physically as well. By connecting with our bodies, we unlock the potential for healing and the ability to experience emotions exactly as we desire. It's a powerful journey toward self-discovery and fulfillment. I can’t wait for you to listen.

This week’s podcast is an invitation. An invitation to stop feeling “stuck.” An invitation to step into the security and self-connection you need to move forward. Most importantly, it is an invitation to join my masterclass and workshop series, From Stuck to Secure, designed specifically for individuals seeking to improve their relationships, gain self-connection, find real belonging, and break free from people pleasing. In this episode, I share my personal journey of going from being stuck to being secure in my relationships. I emphasize the power of security, particularly security within yourself. Without it, you’re most likely trapped in a toxic and exhausting cycle of people pleasing and seeking endless external validation. But with security, you can take control – share your needs, take risks, and show up in every aspect of your life as your authentic YOU. It's about empowering yourself to be in charge of your happiness and fulfillment.

I can’t wait for you to listen and to join From Stuck to Secure: Your Playbook for Changing Any Relationship, a masterclass in secure relationships, for an incredible value of just $37. Starting at the end of June, this masterclass and workshop series offers comprehensive information, personal guidance, and practical strategies that you’ll practice immediately. Here’s what to expect:

  • Two 90-minute interactive masterclasses, held in the evenings on June 25 and June 27, where you’ll learn to create security within yourself and your relationships. During these classes, you’ll make a playbook for yourself to put what you learn into action.
  • From June 28 – July 7, you’ll get an exclusive mini podcast series with additional and personal encouragement from me as you take the week to put your playbook into action.
  • On July 8, we’ll come together for a live group coaching session. This session will be a safe space for you to share your experiences, ask questions, and receive feedback. We’ll talk about what worked, what didn’t, and how to keep progressing. It's a unique opportunity to learn from others and build a supportive community.
  • You’ll wrap up with a one-on-one session with me, where we’ll dive into your specific journey. This personalized attention is designed to get you to a place where, no matter what comes your way, you can confidently say: “I approve of myself, and I can handle anything.”

I really enjoyed my insightful and empowering conversation with this week’s guest, Mikki Gardner. Mikki is a mom to a teenage son, a Certified Life + Conscious Parenting Coach, the host of the Co-Parenting with Confidence podcast, and the bestselling author of the People Pleasers Guide to Co-Parenting Well. After navigating her own divorce hurdles and emerging stronger, she has made it her mission to help moms gain clarity so they can navigate divorce and co-parent with love and confidence. This week, we discuss co-parenting, whether we are still married to the person we're co-parenting with or not, whether they're another family member or someone else with whom we have a relationship. Mikki shares beautiful parenting principles and practical strategies on how to break free from societal conditioning and shift your energy to move away from what you don’t want and towards what you do want so you can be the actively loving parent your child needs. I am so grateful to have a secure relationship with my husband, but it wasn’t always that way. Earlier in our relationship, I was terrified of being left by him, and I built myself an armor of hyper independence and dishonesty. I pretended to be ways I wasn’t to stay safe and “belong” with him. This lack of safety and insecurity in our relationship, I eventually realized, existed because I wasn’t safe with myself, and it wasn’t until I learned to create that safety with me that I could start to create safety in our relationship. When I did learn to become secure in myself, I was able to see more clearly what needed to change in our marriage, and I had the strength to ask for that change. In this episode, I talk about how I learned to create security with myself and how from there, I began creating security in my marriage and all my relationships. For those of you who are, like I was, feeling stuck in a painful relationship, I hope this episode will give you some clues into your own process of creating security in yourself first and in your relationships second. I can’t wait for you to listen, and I’d love to hear your thoughts when you do.

I’m incredibly thankful for Ashmae Hoiland for creating such an engaging conversation this week. Ashmae is a talented writer, painter, and teacher.

Ashmae’s upcoming essay collection, Letters to a Leaving Mormon, will be released on November 1, 2024. Ahead of its release, we wanted to speak about the split between dogma and spirituality.

The act of parting from any religion often feels like leaving certainty and entering a world of chaos. Former practitioners of religion struggle to redefine a sense of morality, direction, and creativity. When we were still involved in Mormonism, we believed our writing had to lead to happy endings and no loose ends, as our whole lives revolved around performativity and getting as close to perfection as possible. Writing doesn’t have to be that. Writing can be an exploration of dark places and happy places. You don’t need to tell a story for posterity — you need to tell it for yourself.

I’m very excited for you to listen.

We have this idea that acceptance means approval, that if we accept when something goes wrong—when a boundary is crossed, when someone disappoints us, when we get rejected—we’re saying it’s okay. When this is how we define acceptance, we avoid it; and when we avoid acceptance, we reject reality. We avoid processing our unmet expectations; we avoid the grief that comes with unmet expectations; and ultimately, we keep ourselves stuck ruminating on what should have been. When we don’t accept what is, we use up all our energy thinking about the reality we can’t control until there’s no brain space left to think about the reality we can control. We tend to fear that accepting the reality of a situation means accepting our powerlessness to it, but when we think about it differently, acceptance actually becomes the thing that gives us our power back. That’s why I want to share my new definition of acceptance with you. I hope this will help you reclaim your power when unmet expectations leave you feeling powerless. Can’t wait for you to listen!

Today I have Elizabeth Hester joining me on the podcast. She’s a current member of the Stop People Pleasing group coaching program that started back in January. She’s a mother, teacher, and lifelong student. She’s also the owner of multiple UPS stores in North Carolina. She’s been processing her grief from the loss of her husband in the ways that work best for her. Grieving goes hand in hand with people pleasing- it’s all about getting comfortable with uncomfortable feelings. While in the group program, she’s learned how to stop apologizing, how to say no, and how to respond when strangers ask her about her husband. Grief teaches you to acknowledge how short life is and not waste time people pleasing anymore. Can’t wait for you to listen.

I’m so grateful for my guest Kimberly Mathis and this week’s fascinating conversation. Kimberly is a queer therapist-turned-general life coach with an ADHD brain who helps people change what feels unchangeable. She teaches her clients how to make their own decisions and navigate difficult relationships - including the one they have with themselves. She works with clients 1:1, loves sharing her work and life with her community on Instagram, and hosts a podcast called, "Decisions Change Everything." Healthy, respectful relationships can come in many forms. Traditional Western society pushes a heteronormative narrative about what makes a “successful” relationship- where longevity is valued more than quality. It IS possible to explore attractions and relationship dynamics in ways that are healthy, respectful, and respect your autonomy and someone else's. Communication is key, along with being vulnerable and tolerating discomfort. Can’t wait for you to listen.

I want to have a conversation with you about the tension in this self-help marketing space so that you know where I’m coming from. I want you to know what my values are and I want you to know what I'm striving for. I want you to look at the lens of your own values through the products that are being marketed to you, because it is relentless. Making informed decisions about the self-help industry is so essential. Marketing can be misleading. We’re blamed for our problems and then sold products to fix them. There’s a multi-billion dollar industry backing the narrative that we need more. We need that one thing or ten things that might make our lives easier and happier. I’m here to tell you that you don’t need some fabricated form of healing made by society. Healing is feeling like you have the support and opportunities you need to make meaningful change happen in your life. Take care of yourself. Can’t wait for you to listen.

This episode features conversations I did with four current participants of my Stop People Pleasing group coaching program: Natalie Hagwood, Elizabeth Sherman, Kelly True, and Gini Ewart. I hope that by hearing their stories, you're inspired to see what is possible for you, and take a little peek into some of the things that I teach. When each participant joins, I ask them the same questions about their experience. I feel like it helps potential participants to see firsthand accounts of how the program worked for others. We talk about what the program’s been like for them, the hesitations they may have had at first about joining, what has surprised them the most about the process of uncovering their people pleasing, what tools from the program have been most helpful, and what they would tell someone who’s thinking about joining.

After you listen, if you want to practice some of the same things I’ve taught in the program, use the link in the show notes to get added to my free Facebook group. On March 25 - 27, I’m going to be doing a free 3-day challenge to teach you how to say no, or whatever it is you’re avoiding saying - and not die. In 3 short, practical sessions, I’ll teach you what you need to know. Then on April 1st, we’ll get together for a bonus free coaching session to cover what the experience was like for you. I hope to see you there!

Maggie Reyes is a wonderful marriage coach who I had the honor of having as a coach myself. Maggie helped me get to another version of my marriage that has been just so delightful. She has a podcast called “The Marriage Life Coach Podcast.” Maggie’s double-certified as both a Life Coach and a Sex, Love and Relationship coach by two of the most innovative thinkers and teachers in the self development industry: Brooke Castillo and Layla Martin. She also graduated from The Life Coach School (LCS) in 2012 as Certified Professional Life Coach.

Back in the day, marriage used to be a business transaction. Now, we're flipping the script and finding liberation through our relationships. We can be the leaders of the relationships that we want to have. Ask yourself: "If we were equal partners, what would that look like?" Say to yourself: "I matter." Feeling freedom of expression in our relationships is essential.

This week, Sara Hughes-Zabawa LCSW, CDWF joins me to talk about advocating for yourself in a medical setting. Sara is a therapist, licensed clinical social worker, Certified Daring Way™ facilitator, yoga instructor, & wellness coach. She’s passionate about helping clients thrive as they enhance the quality of their lives through fostering improved awareness, insight, skill-building, and quality education and resources. She also has first-hand experience with self-advocating in medical settings. Health issues leave us vulnerable. We're so used to deferring to an authority figure that rather than asking the hard questions, we often stay silent. Advocating for ourselves can be challenging but it's so beneficial to learn how. We have a right to be treated with integrity. If you need guidance and support, look for a patient advocate. Can’t wait for you to listen.

This episode is all about relationships. As humans, we’re wired for connection and meant to have a variety of dynamics in our lives. Friendship, intimacy, and pleasure are necessary in life, as well as our independence. Life is the balance of independence vs. interdependence. In this episode I offer tools to help assess if you want to keep/continue to invest in the relationships in your life. This is your opportunity to consider your own needs first. Once you’ve assessed your relationship goals with yourself and others, you can move forward with ease and comfort. I can't wait for you to listen.

Grief plays a big part in the journey to stopping people pleasing and perfectionating. It's the death or the changing of a former life- a former way of seeing the world, a former way that we used to relate to each other in relationships, a former way that we used to be rewarded and recognized. It comes up a lot in my group coaching program, Stop People Pleasing, and in my work with individual clients. As we change for the better, we lose parts of our past, sometimes including relationships. We create new boundaries and ways to function which don't always align with the dynamics in our life. We should never have to hide or pretend to stay in relationships. If you’re experiencing some grief during this process, I hope this episode is helpful for you.

In this episode, Kori Linn and I discuss Imposter Syndrome. Kori is a life and career coach as well as the host of the Satisfied AF podcast. She helps clients, listeners, and social media followers create more satisfaction & delight in every area of their lives. Imposter syndrome points the finger at individuals and burdens them with being “better” or improving. It burdens the marginalized individual with changing so that they can fit the system without criticizing the system. People socialized as girls and women are literally trained to have imposter syndrome. We're socialized to second guess ourselves, be polite, and not to brag. Unwinding imposter syndrome starts with asking, “What are your perspectives of yourself and what would happen if you treated yourself with confidence?” Can’t wait for you to listen.

This week I’m joined by Andrea Giles. She's a certified life coach and has a podcast called “Heal From Infidelity”. Andrea helps women sort out the confusion, grief, fear, doubt, and frustration that comes when infidelity (as well as other forms of betrayal) occurs in their marriage. Today we talk about our life stories and what got us here. We’re both on healing journeys and were part of similar religious worlds. Andrea shares her story of loss, dating, and parenting. Vulnerability and validation can make betrayal or being betrayed complex and tricky. People override their integrity for the feeling of belonging by stepping outside their marriage or partnership, and people pleasing contributes to the damage. We can work at this self-deception. Can’t wait for you to listen.

Our wanting is essential and important. Women feel shame around wanting because we’ve been taught to not want things. “Don't be needy or selfish.” How many times have you heard or felt this? Do you choose not to hope or strive for your heart's desires because it's easier to not want than to be disappointed? Wanting is opening up to your curiosity on your path to self-discovery. You can want impossible things. You can have a big beautiful full thriving life doing what you want to do. I want you to love who you are; to have the experience of love and being in awe of ourselves is what I want for all of us. Can’t wait for you to listen.

Elizabeth Sherman joins me this week to discuss midlife and the changes women experience on different levels. Humans socialized as women experience emotional, physical, and mental changes as they get older. Health should be the overall goal but our society's ways of thinking mess that up. Diet culture and the patriarchy are such negative influences. Food and emotions co-relate - we have to learn to listen to ourselves. Have the snack you want, then unpack why you wanted it and are leaning into certain comfort behaviors. Are you paying attention to you, or are you too busy worrying about others' thoughts, feelings, or reactions rather than being present with yourself? Increasing awareness and loving yourself can improve all aspects of your life.

Andee Martineau and I continue our conversation this week about people pleasing and parenting. Tolerating failures and disappointments with your children can be challenging but it is possible to deal with. The need to fix, save, and/or rescue can be consuming. As a parent, you have to be true to yourself and respect yourself first while also respecting and loving others. Stopping the patterns and the cycles of people pleasing is possible with awareness.

Andee Martineau and I have a long history together. She introduced me to coaching. She has 6 kids and I have 5. We home-schooled our kids together and have a common religious background. She’s a true friend who’s been there for me and is along for the ride. Parenting is a hard job and learning how to stay healthy, balance, and manage everything life throws at us is a lifelong process. We can develop the skills to regulate our nervous system, handle what life throws at us, and stop people pleasing while parenting, as well as creating future people pleasers.

My mentor, teacher, friend, and colleague joined me to talk about how claiming authority changed everything for us. Kara Loewentheil, J.D., is a Master certified coach, host of the top-rated podcast UnF*ck Your Brain, and creator of The Clutch, a feminist monthly coaching program that has helped tens of thousands of women across the world liberate themselves from the inside out.

Women are conditioned to believe power and authority are negative. We notice power and authority if it’s being used against us or being used to do harm, but it can be used to do good as well. Women are socialized from the beginning to believe that power and authority are not for us. We’re here to tell you that it is possible to claim your authority. It takes breaking down the walls society built around us and knowing we have the power to live our full truth. Can’t wait for you to listen.

In this episode, I discuss how to navigate uncomfortable situations this holiday season. Unwinding the way we operate out of people pleasing and perfectionating is especially tricky during the holidays. Holidays kick up a lot of difficult emotions and situations. The way to get through this season is to honor your own desires, which starts with listening to yourself. Then, you can have the conversations needed to set new expectations. Expressing your own wants and needs is hard because we want to appease others and not create discomfort. Have a listen and let me help you hold space for yourself this holiday season.

We are programmed to constantly worry about whether we are safe and loved. This comes from attachment styles we develop early in life. It can be helpful to identify your attachment styles because you can have a different style with different people in your life. In this episode, I’ll give you an overview of attachment styles so that you can think about what yours might be. Our attachment style can change- it's not a fixed verdict. We can do the work to heal the parts of us that limit our comfort in relationships, especially your relationship with yourself.

In this episode, Deb and I talk about repressed emotions and how they relate to physical pain. Deb Malkin is a feminist mind/body coach, specializing in using the tools of neuro + bioplasticity and consciously curious hypno-coaching to help people unlearn pain and emotional stress symptoms. As a queer, fat, radically unapologetic human with their own unique mind and body, Deb joyfully works with everyone. They bring an awareness of how the intersections of social conditioning, family narratives, and biopsychosocial determinants of health (racism, sexism, stigma...) impact our felt sense of wellness/wholeness/self-worth + love.

I am so excited to continue discussing boundaries this week with my special guest Olivia Vizachero! She is a Master certified life coach who helps people choose themselves as their top priority. When we decide to set a boundary and resistance comes up, that's where the work is. We can’t control how others react, we can only control ourselves and our thoughts and actions. Until you set a boundary, you will continue to feel discomfort. Which discomfort do you want to take on - the one that creates the best life for yourself or the one where you live in fear of other people's reactions?

Boundaries are about learning to share the power in any situation by identifying actions within your control. This week's and next week's episodes are all about boundaries. I have a special guest joining me next week, Olivia Vizachero, who will help me continue the conversation. Being a good girl means not having boundaries. It means that you are constantly prioritizing other people, putting off the things you need to do, and putting yourself, your needs, and your wants after everyone else's. You're praised and rewarded for it. But there’s another way of operating- establishing healthy boundaries. You can show kindness and love for yourself and others by setting boundaries with what works for you. It just takes some work and focus. Imagine how you would feel if you allowed some discomfort for your overall benefit. There are steps to take to make life function and flow for you. Can’t wait for you to listen. <3

This is a powerful episode about an important movie, ”Women Talking”. I'm joined by Chelsea Paxton as we delve into the film's themes and the significance of language and speaking up. Sadly, women are often not taken seriously and are taught to suppress their feelings. Questions like "Are you really hungry?" or "Did that really hurt?" are dismissed with responses like "You’re fine," undermining women's experiences. It's crucial to change this lack of belief. Society often tries to dictate our roles, but reconnecting with our bodies and wanting is a challenge we can overcome. With the right resources and collective effort, we can create a more empowering and inclusive world.

This week my guest is Keina Newell. Keina is a financial coach and founder of the Wealth Over Now program. We discuss our relationship with money and get into the connection between money and people pleasing, codependency, and perfectionism. Keina discusses how budgeting can be therapeutic and comforting. She talks about how gaining awareness about how you’re spending your money can change your ability to save and achieve your goals. She has her clients ask themselves when they’re shopping: “Why am I buying this thing? What is the feeling that's motivating it? Does it work with the math? Does it work with the budget? Could I just feel this feeling? What would it be like to feel uncomfortable rather than overspend? Rather than extend beyond what the math tells me is a good decision for me?” Keina feels it's her personal mission to help everyone make the money they desire to make and to create the life that they love. Can’t wait for you to listen.

This week the amazing Kristin Carder is joining me to talk about ADHD. I’ve been looking forward to this for a while. She is an incredible coach with 10 years of ADHD expertise and also my friend. I’ve started to become curious if I have ADHD after looking at the symptoms. It's mindblowing once you make the connections and realize that this might be something you struggle with. ADHD intersects with the "Good Girl" programming in that masking behaviors are often present in both. After Kristin’s diagnosis at 21 years old, she started her research and wanted to find a way to help others. She created the podcast, I Have ADHD, and the group coaching program called FOCUSED. There’s a lot in the episode that can help start the conversation with yourself and resources that can help if you think you have ADHD.

This episode is an intro to the gender diagnosis gap with ADHD and our ingrained masking behaviors from social pressures to be a "Good Girl". Masking behaviors are the ways in which we perform, pretend, and suppress our emotions to be accepted. “Be polite, be nice, be on time”...all of this keeps us from attending to our real ADHD symptoms. You can be free of the shame, anxiety, and masking, it just takes time and finding the right resources. There are significantly fewer women properly diagnosed because we are performing and just trying to keep it together rather than getting the help we need. There’s nothing wrong with us. We have symptoms that affect how our brain works, and it has nothing to do with our character. If you've been curious about how you've been feeling, this is a great resource of information. There are tools to make life easier overall. Next week I have Kristen Carder joining me to delve deeper into this topic, you can check out her podcast ‘I Have ADHD’, and look into her group coaching program called FOCUSED.

How many times a day do you find yourself thinking, 'I’m selfish for doing this for me instead of doing something for someone else.' You're not alone. Rather than prioritizing our own well-being, women often give themselves only scraps of our day for self-care. Cultural expectations put women into roles that often call for them to be selfless, aka the caregiver or the nurturer. Humans who have been socialized as females tend to feel held to the “rules” of gender roles from the past. These ingrained expectations are further perpetuated by media and pop culture, reinforcing traditional gender stereotypes. Breaking free from the programming takes time and focus, but that's what I’m here for. Let's get to the root of the issue and change the way we think in order to heal this discomfort. You can do what you want without taking from others. It’s about balance but also about embracing you and all you’re capable of.

In this week's episode, I'm joined by a special guest, Sara Hughes-Zabawa, as we explore the topic of people-pleasing as a response to trauma. Sara's passion lies in guiding clients toward thriving and enhancing their quality of life. She achieves this by cultivating heightened awareness, providing insights, building crucial skills, and offering top-notch education and resources.

People-pleasing often emerges as a deeply ingrained trauma response. Stemming from a desire to evade conflict or seek validation, this coping mechanism involves prioritizing others' needs and expectations over one's own well-being. Individuals who engage in people-pleasing may have encountered situations where their emotional safety was compromised. This led them to adapt by stretching themselves thin to maintain a semblance of control or connection. During our conversation, Sara and I discuss the importance of taking a pause when faced with stressful stimuli, as well as valuable tools to guide you through these situations. Recognizing people-pleasing as a trauma response is a crucial step toward healing. It enables us to address underlying wounds and gradually transition towards self-empowerment and authentic self-expression. Can't wait for you to listen and uncover the insights this episode holds.

This week, three of my friends and clients, who are also coaches, have come together to discuss my Stop People Pleasing Group Program. This podcast episode provides deep insights into my program and its potential to enrich our daily lives.

Joining me are Kami Kirby, a parenting coach; Chelsea Paxton, who specializes in guiding women recovering from high-demand religions; and Laura Bond Williams, a coach and Pilates instructor. They embrace diverse roles as mothers, partners, wives, daughters, business owners, and employees, weaving a rich tapestry of human interactions and relationship experiences.

While some initially joined due to their coaching responsibilities and a desire to gain a better understanding of how people-pleasing manifests among their clients – whether they are women, children, or parents – what truly captivated me was how each of them derived something immensely valuable from the experience. It has transformed their individual lives, empowering them to confidently advocate for their needs and desires, regardless of their roles.

A heartfelt thank you to Kami, Chelsea, Laura, and to all of you who have taken this journey. I am eagerly looking forward to you tuning in and listening to this enriching discussion.

In this episode, Danielle Savory and I dive into the importance of giving ourselves permission to experience pleasure. Danielle is a master-certified coach, podcast host, and expert in neuropsychology, mindfulness, sexual pleasure, and intimacy. While sex and intimacy are essential aspects, it's also about fostering a deeper connection with our bodies. The burden of internal abuse can have both mental and physical consequences. By reconnecting with our bodies, we open up the potential for healing and the ability to experience emotions precisely as we desire. We experience separation from our bodies in many different ways: religion, diet culture, chronic pain, etc. When we acknowledge our discomfort and give ourselves what we need, magic happens. Connecting to your body can open up the possibility of healing and allow you to feel exactly how you would like to. I can’t wait for you to listen!

A revolution happens when women say what they want, especially when their words align with their real feelings. When you can express how you really feel, it makes you feel more comfortable standing up for yourself and setting expectations. One of the key aspects I teach my clients is how to articulate themselves effectively during difficult conversations. We are capable of updating the relationships in our life to match our wants and needs. Connecting to our own wants and needs is a process but it can be an incredible journey.  One of the greatest advantages of remaining authentic, no matter the situation, is that there's no need to put on a performance to feel accepted. Having confidence and knowing that we can handle the stress that comes with advocating for ourselves is so important. The ultimate goal is to achieve overall integrity and lasting comfort.

In this episode, I'll be sharing my personal experience with speaking up for myself. It's not easy, but it's incredibly rewarding. I hope this episode can help you understand the unease that comes with expressing your true thoughts. The anxiety that arises from speaking up can be overwhelmingly strong, but it's crucial to embrace this new discomfort as it ultimately benefits you. I am not here to dictate what you should say; instead, I want to help you develop an awareness of why you struggle to voice your desires. By recognizing the influences that have shaped you, you can genuinely exercise your ability to choose. The ultimate objective is to find a way to honor ourselves while also respecting others. I am so excited for you to tune in.

This week, I am joined by Elena Joy Thurston. Elena Joy is an inspiring LGBTQ speaker, trainer, and founder of the nonprofit Pride and Joy Foundation. This foundation is dedicated to reducing the rates of suicide and homelessness within the LGBTQ community. Elena Joy is also featured in the award-winning documentary, Conversion, and has delivered a viral TEDx talk on surviving conversion therapy.
Back in 2017, Elena Joy was a stay-at-home mom of four, deeply entrenched in her Mormon community. However, she began to question her happiness and realized that she was not attracted to men and is a lesbian. This realization led her to believe that she needed to be "fixed," prompting her to seek help from someone who claimed to have the solution. In this episode, Elena Joy delves into the dynamics of conversion camps worldwide, where the promise of an eternal reward of being united with their families in heaven is used as a manipulative tool to change and "fix" queer individuals. Ultimately, she discovered that the support she truly needed did not come from the church, which compelled her to choose life and embark on a journey of healing. In the process, she found a way to assist LGBTQ youth and individuals facing similar challenges. Elena Joy dedicates herself to daily healing work that positively impacts the world, and I am thrilled for you to listen to her story.

This week, I'm thrilled to have Andrea Parks and Wendy Montgomery joining me as we delve into how our upbringings shape us as parents and the transformative power of remaining loving and open. Andrea is a Clinical Therapist, Coach, and Reiki Master, while Wendy is an Empowerment, Life, and Enneagram Coach. Both of them proudly embrace their roles as moms to queer and transgender children. Together, they share their stories of their children coming out, encompassing both the beauty and the pain experienced on this journey. These families exude deep love for their kids and foster an environment of love and understanding. In supporting your queer and trans loved ones, it's important to let them guide you in understanding their needs. While our society may lack a comprehensive support system, there is support available if you're unable to find it at home. I can't wait for you to tune in and listen.

This heartfelt conversation sheds light on the possibility of discovering your true self and living authentically. Hannah Carlise and Michelle Call, therapist/life coach, join me in discussing coming out later in life and navigating conservative religious upbringings. Choosing ourselves may be challenging, and dismantling the barriers of societal conditioning takes time. If you find yourself constantly neglecting your own needs, it's time to break that pattern. Hannah and Michelle's stories serve as proof that you can liberate yourself from guilt and shame and live from your heart. Whenever you feel doubt, remember there are others out there going through something similar.

This is an exciting episode! Dr. Sonia Wright and I discuss pleasure and sex. She has opened my mind in so many ways and I hold her very close to my heart - We were in the same Master Certification class. Dr. Wright is not only a medical doctor and pediatric radiologist by training, but also a trained sexual counselor, master-certified life coach, and a passionate advocate of sexual empowerment. She's also a toys enthusiast and a midlife sex coach for women. Together, we delve into sexual intimacy, sexual orientation, gender, and women's health. Giving yourself permission to explore and discover who you really are is possible. Life is about enjoying it, we don’t have to fit into the good-girl mould and check off all of society's boxes. Everyone deserves to experience pleasure, and it's essential to make it a natural part of our conversations.

I am thrilled for you to tune in to this important episode of the Ex-Good Girl Podcast! In this episode, my dear friend Alex Reegan and I delve into the significance of feeling acknowledged and seen. Alex is a remarkable individual—a trans man, interfaith minister, author, speaker, and transformative spiritual coach. Growing up in an evangelical Christian family, he faced tremendous barriers in expressing his true identity. This led to years of battling depression, anxiety, and addiction as he sought to break free from the oppressive beliefs that constrained him.

Through his inspiring journey, Alex finally found solace in sobriety, shamanism, and seminary education, which enabled him to reclaim his faith and trust in the Divine. With unwavering dedication, Alex empowers others through speaking engagements, workshops, and personalized sessions, helping them unearth their truth, shed shame, and foster unity. Additionally, he wrote an incredible book titled 'What Needs to be Said.'

This episode centers around the transformative process of self-discovery and the path that leads us there. Alex is a true force of nature, wholeheartedly committed to choosing love and guiding others along their own journeys. I had the pleasure of meeting him in 2018, and he has profoundly impacted my life in countless ways.

I strongly believe that we all have much to gain from listening and learning. I am immensely grateful for this extraordinary episode and, most of all, for Alex's presence in our lives.

My former coach, Krista St-Germain, interviewed me for her podcast The Widowed Mom a while ago, and I'm excited to share it on The Ex-Good Girl. During the interview, we discuss people-pleasing: defining it and ways to overcome it. We also explore how our connection with ourselves can vary from person to person. This episode is particularly special to me as Krista has been incredibly helpful in my life. It serves as a reminder of the profound impact a good coach can have. People-pleasing can come at a significant cost: the amount of time and energy we spend on constantly cycling through thoughts about others and what they think of us. Some women can spend up to 3 to 5 hours a day in this cycle. It's about reclaiming our time, brain space, energy, and peace. With the help of the right coach, we can break free from this rumination wheel and take control of our lives.

In this week's episode, Sara interviews Karen C.L. Anderson, a Master certified life coach and author who specializes in coaching about the mother/adult daughter relationship. They discuss the challenges that often arise in this particular relationship, exploring the generational aspects and the societal shift towards acknowledging trauma and the importance of emotional expression. Karen shares insights from her own journey of estrangement from her mother and the subsequent healing process, emphasizing the need to separate one's identity from the expectations imposed by the mother-daughter dynamic. They delve into topics such as people-pleasing, guilt, regret, and the significance of setting boundaries in a relationship. Karen's approach highlights the importance of self-love and acceptance, challenging the belief that unconditional love is contingent on meeting certain conditions. Sara and Karen conclude by discussing the power of questioning and redefining the roles and stories that have been passed down through generations, offering a fresh perspective on nurturing healthier mother-daughter connections.

Community is an essential aspect of life, and when women come together and share their stories, it can be one of the most powerful forms of learning.

When women unite, we can achieve great things and make a positive impact on ourselves and the world. Starting a new journey may seem daunting, but it can be made easier by breaking it down into manageable steps. I'll begin by asking you, "Why?" Why do you do the things you do? Why do you feel comfortable doing this? Why don't you enjoy doing that? We've been unconsciously programmed by the patriarchy, and I'm here to help you break down those barriers.

Working towards a collective goal enhances our learning and understanding. Witnessing others achieve their goals can also help us apply their teachings to our own lives. You are powerful, and a comfortable life is within your reach.

In this episode, My husband and I share many life experiences that have helped shape us into happier, healthier individuals. We prioritize authenticity with ourselves and each other, even though navigating life and relationships can be complex. We've come to realize how much we're influenced by outside forces, and we've learned to condition ourselves to be loving and respectful to all, including ourselves. We show up to honor each other's experiences and choose each other consciously every day. Unearthing self-love requires de-conditioning from things that were forced upon us. Remember, you own your life. We're here to share our story and remind you of your own power.

Do you suppress your true emotions just to avoid conflict and keep the peace? Does your body feel relaxed, or is it trying to tell you how you really feel? Perfectionism, people-pleasing, and codependency can take over our lives. But we can learn to become detectives in our own lives and stop this toxic behavior. Eventually, the changes we make will align with our decision-making process.

In this episode, I explore the Five Challenges that have helped me become the most authentic and real version of myself. We need to be honest with ourselves, learn to ask for what we want, say No more often, be okay with disappointing others, and take care of ourselves. This episode offers many helpful tools to live more freely and comfortably.

Learning to have my own back is the most powerful thing I've ever done for myself; it unlocked my potential. Many women internalize their mistakes, leading to a spiral of shameful thoughts that can be very draining. But how can we shut that down? If we bully ourselves, then we're not safe with ourselves, and we're not safe anywhere. You deserve that essential safety. In this episode, I'll help you identify the bullying voice in your head and shut it down. Imagine yourself as a younger version of yourself. Would you allow someone to bully her? Remember, you deserve respect and love from everyone, including yourself. There are steps you can take to shut down the brain bully and stop the negative feedback loop. One of the biggest benefits of this practice is that you can handle trying new things and taking risks. Your fear drops, and you can live more freely overall.

What is it that you truly desire? After much personal reflection and research, I've come to realize that women's wants and desires are our secret source of power and direction. My goal is for you to have a greater sense of your desires and to understand why it's essential by the end of this episode. Unfortunately, our disconnection from our own desires happens at a very young age. We are raised by caregivers who provide us with love, belonging, and acceptance. However, this also means that children are often seen as less than adults and need to be molded into desirable traits, such as obedience and compliance. This can become problematic because it leads to an adult telling a child how to feel, such as saying "That didn't hurt, you're fine, shake it off." Although this is done with loving concern, it further disconnects us from our own feelings. We learn to not trust our impulses and instead trust outside voices. As we get older, there are more voices trying to influence us, but we need to trust our own voice first. This is why your wanting is your power. It's your inner compass that always points you in the right direction. My definition of a 'good girl' is someone who is overly connected to outside influences and under-connected to herself. Let me help you reconnect with yourself and your aspirations.

The patriarchal, capitalist, Western way of life imposes certain values and expectations on the way women think, feel, and choose to live. When we fail to meet these expectations, we can often feel lackluster or unsatisfied. Even if we do attain these expectations, there is always another critique looming about the deficit in our lives. In this episode, we will discuss how perfectionism is a manifestation of these societal pressures, and explore ways to shift our mindset to focus on being better, rather than perfect. It's possible to feel accomplished in this society by doing things that bring us joy and make us feel whole. Instead of fixating on what we could do better, we can focus on celebrating our daily small wins and identifying what truly matters to us. What can you prioritize and celebrate more in your life? What are your daily achievements, no matter how small? How can you experience genuine satisfaction? Join me as I delve into these questions and more.

In this episode, we will explore the concept of the Goldilocks Zone. Our Western patriarchal society often tells women that there is a "right" way to be, and as a result, we can feel like we are either too much or not enough. We have been programmed to be hypersensitive to the opinions of others and to internalize those thoughts as if they are facts. There is a balance to be found between being selfish and being a people pleaser. It takes time and guidance to find what feels right for you.

Throughout this podcast, I'll offer you guidance on how to navigate the space between extremes. I'll share tips on how to unplug from outside opinions of what you should be and instead, focus on relentlessly loving yourself. By the end of this episode, you will have a better understanding of how to find your own Goldilocks Zone and embrace your true self.

How do our beliefs take shape? Are they ingrained subconsciously? Are you hiding your true feelings or opinions to avoid conflict? Straying from societal norms can be scary, as we may feel left out or isolated. Fear can keep us in a corner, but self-love and embracing our truth can help us break free. In this episode, I will explore how our society and certain groups train women to prioritize agreeableness, friendliness, and compliance. We may be trained to wait for external validation, but we can learn to trust ourselves and our inner dialogue.

Join me as I delve deeper into these topics and offer practical advice on how to speak up for yourself and others.

Episodes 4 & 5 are about my story and the experiences that shaped my opinions and views. Experiences can take different forms - they can be both full of love and harmful teachings, create wonderful connections and deep anxiety, and be important for one phase of life but lose their significance as circumstances change. In this episode, I talk about my upbringing in the LDS (Mormon) Church, how it influenced me, and why I ultimately left.

When I created Stop People Pleasing, it was from a deeply personal autobiographical experience. People pleasing can feel like walking through life with 20-pound weights shackled to each ankle. You can do it, but you'll be dragging a lot of resentment, fear, and obligation with you, and you don't have to. Much of what I was taught contributed to this. I'm deeply grateful for some of it, but unlearning some of it was necessary to reclaim my sovereignty.

Whether it was religion, family culture, or society that taught you to be small or less than you are, it's time for the unlearning.
