Life comes and goes in seasons, and we find trials and triumphs in each one. Three years ago, I was in a season of profound grief after experiencing several trials within the span of a few months. I wrestled with loneliness, grief, and questions about how to start over in my mid-thirties. But through it all, God was faithful, steadfast, and true.

This week on the podcast, I reflect on the journey from sorrow to joy, share how the Psalms have ministered to my heart in every season, and invite you to consider where God has you right now. Whether you’re in a time of planting, resting, or harvesting, Immanuel—God with us—meets us right where we are.

I also have fun news to share: I have a new part-time job that perfectly fits this chapter of life and my upcoming book, Seasons of a Soul, walks you through the Psalms, coming alongside you wherever you are.

No matter your season, God’s steadfast love endures.

In this episode, I’m sharing what it looks like to pull back from striving, rest in God’s timing, and embrace the season I’m in with grace. If you’ve ever felt the weight of trying to do more, be more, or produce more, this one’s for you. Let’s go at the pace of grace together.

This week, I chatted with Cortney Norris about the power of fasting as a spiritual rhythm in our lives as believers in Christ. Oftentimes, we neglect to fast simply because we don’t understand it nor see it as a necessity. But Jesus instructed us to fast, and the Bible is full of verses that point to its significance. This rhythm is not simply to get something from God, but rather to get to know Him.

In this episode, we discuss the spiritual benefits of fasting and why so many in the church today have fallen out of this important spiritual rhythm and discipline. You aren’t going to walk away with more rules, but rather a deeper understanding of how fasting can bring you into a more intimate relationship with Jesus.

If you’ve ever wondered about the importance of fasting and questioned how to get started, this episode is for you!

This week, Ashley Holston and I talked about the joy of Jesus. She shares how sometimes, she gets so wrapped up in seeking tools and resources for her faith that she loses sight of the core—Jesus Himself. Even when she couldn't see it during hard times, God was quietly nurturing her faith, growing a supernatural joy within her heart. Her joy wasn't rooted in temporal things, but in the eternal hope of Jesus Christ.

If you’re struggling with all the extra activities, pressures, gifts, and parties thrown at you in this season, this conversation will encourage you to rest in Jesus alone and be content with Him.

This week, we continue our series on the fruit of the Spirit and consider the gentleness of Jesus Christ. We read in the Gospel of Mark about the story of Jairus' daughter, where we witness the depth of Jesus' kindness and love. His miracles are not just a showcase of His divine powers, but a testament to His love. His healing of the woman with the issue of blood and His revival of Jairus' daughter, who was declared dead, are examples of His boundless compassion.

In the second part of this episode, we reflect on the plight of the Israelites as they ventured from slavery towards an uncertain future in the wilderness. This narrative takes us on a journey of expectations, grief, and loss that is as relevant today as it was then. But the beauty of transformation lies in these small ripples of change. Let’s rest in the gentle touch of Jesus and His power to redefine us.

In this episode, learn from the biblical story of Ruth, a favorite of mine. Her resilience through her decision to stay with her mother-in-law Naomi and humble requests to her kinsman redeemer, Boaz help us to see that we are never alone, even when life has completely fallen apart. This episode will help you see the goodness of God through a favorite Bible story of redemption that resonates with us all.

We also discuss the impact of authenticity in relationships and the beauty of being truly known by our Heavenly Father. I share vulnerably about our early days of marriage in hopes that you may recognize the mask you might be unknowingly wearing. All of this culminates in our relationship with God and helps us to see how we may be placing barriers between us that keep us from true intimacy. Sometimes, joy feels unattainable because life is so overwhelming. But the fruit of the Spirit is not something that is special for “super Christians.” The Word is very clear that when we are in Christ, His Holy Spirit gives us these fruits that allow us to shine the light of Christ to others. We can have joy no matter what the circumstances because of Christ.

This week, we are taking a look at the life of Paul as we consider what it means to have joy in the midst of extremely difficult circumstances. It is possible through Christ!

This week’s episode is a little different than our previous shows. As I prayed and thought about what to share with you this Holy Week with Easter so near, I couldn’t stop thinking about our Savior as “Man of sorrows.” We have known so much sorrow over this last week as we consider the tragedy in Nashville along with personal grief and pain in our lives and the lives of those we love. We talk through the comfort our Savior brings us as we come to know Him as the suffering Savior, and we find hope in the midst of our pain when we trust that He is at work, even when it feels like evil has prevailed. I pray this episode encourages your heart as you look the cross and we prepare to celebrate the empty tomb. We praise God that He is risen, but we also remember His suffering and give thanks for His sacrifice. This week’s conversation on the podcast with my friend Hannah was so encouraging. Hannah experienced a health scare with a BRCA2 gene mutation diagnosis that indicated she was at a very high risk for developing breast cancer later in life and ended up having a preventive double mastectomy. In this conversation, we talked about how to trust God in the midst of a health scare you never imagined would be a part of your story. Growing up in the church, there was a saying that we all knew how to answer. It goes like this—when you say, “God is good,” we answer, “All the time.” And then you will likely say, “All the time?” to which the answer is, “God is good.”I want us to think about this for a little bit. As we consider the statement, “God is good,” there may be some feelings that come up for us. In our heads, we may know this is true. But our hearts may be telling us a different story. When we hear this statement, we may feel angry. Frustrated. Sad. Betrayed. Or indifferent. Today, we get to take a look at why God is good, even when our circumstances say that He isn’t. A lot of people may not have said this statement before: “God isn’t big enough to handle my problems,” but they have lived as though that were the reality. If they didn’t have the guts to admit that this is what they were thinking, they may have said something akin to this “If God were real, He wouldn’t have allowed ______ this to happen.” or “If God is real, then why does He allow sin and suffering?”Today we look at the story of Gideon. God used him to defeat a mighty army. But before he was a leader of a victorious army, he was hiding from the enemy under the cover of night. God saw him and called him a mighty warrior, even in his vulnerable moment of fear. Show notes:https://www.jessicanmathisen.com/podcastAre you thriving or surviving? What a joy to welcome Kia Stephens to the podcast today! Kia is the founder of Entrusted Women, which aims to increase and create opportunities for Christian women communicators of color. We have been friends online for a few years now and I have been so encouraged to watch her journey and learn from her. Her passion is to help women identify their father wounds and find healing through Christ’s love. Today is the release date of her book, “Overcoming Father Wounds: Exchanging Your Pain for God’s Perfect Love.” She can speak with authority on this subject because she knows it intimately, and she shares so vulnerably and gently about how to move past brokenness and into wholeness with God as our Healer. I so enjoyed this chat with Kia, and I know you will, too!SHOW NOTES: https://www.jessicanmathisen.com/podcast

Today on the podcast, we take a look at the story of Hannah in the Bible. This woman was so desperate for the Lord to open her womb that the priest thought she was drunk as she cried out to the Lord in the temple. What did she learn from Him that we need to know when God doesn’t grant us the desires of our hearts? In this episode, we unpack this statement: “God helps those who help themselves.” Many people believe that this phrase in Scripture. I was shocked to learn that a few years back, 52% of professing Christians believed that it was a verse in the Bible. Well, there is no such verse, friends! We have the privilege of resting in the love of our Savior and trusting Him to do what we could not and never could do, which is save us from ourselves.TAKE THE QUIZ: Are you living in survival mode? https://bit.ly/3IhGVV3
