The average American citizen creates around 5 pounds of waste per day. As a nation, We create 1.6 Billion pounds of waste on a daily basis, with a massive part of that waste being non-biodegradable plastic. We mix that dirty, crushed plastic in with our garbage, throw the bags into bins, and turn a blind eye as our overwhelmed recycling centers attempt to sort out the mess. When they fail, the plastic enters our ecosystems, crumbling to our water and into our food. When the system of recycling succeeds, the plastic is sorted, sold for a profit, reused, remade, and has the chance to realize its full potential as one of the incredible inventions of our species. Plastic is not the enemy of our future, it’s a tool - our civilization just needs to become better at managing that tool.
On this episode, We welcome Amanda Marrs of Amp Robotics. Amp Robotics is a company that uses machine vision and machine learning to train custom-built robots that can sort our trash faster and more accurately than has ever been done before. They can see and categorize our trash to any degree of specificity, creating perfectly sorted bales that can be easily sold, remade, or repurposed. This technology could be a pivot point for our civilization, as we take step after tiny step towards an economy where everything is reused, where few things are wasted, and where landfills are a relic of an uncertain past.

The backbone of every functional democracy is a free and fair election, in which the candidate with the strongest support from the majority of the citizens, a candidate that could beat any other candidate in a 1-1 match, is elected into office. It sounds simple, and yet the electoral system in the United States is broken. It has resulted in what we have accepted as the status quo of our democracy - bipartisanship. Run-off elections. Bad candidates. Voting for the lesser of two evils. Swinging the vote. Billions of dollars and years of our attention as a nation that are wasted on presidential campaigns that are no better than a for-profit sporting event. An event in which the citizens, and not the politicians, are the losers. All of these phenomena are symptoms of a broken electoral system. So how do we fix it?
On Type One Planet, we are working to answer this existential question. Our guest in this episode, Aaron Hamlin, tells us that — “there May be a solution to this puzzle.” Aaron is the co-founder and Executive Director of The Center for Election Science, where they bolster a simple idea - Approval Voting. Plastic - it is the foundational substance of our modern world. Cheap, malleable, and durable, it has enabled our species to make exponential strides in our ability to transport food, build affordable and lightweight technology, and provide what some would define as a higher standard of living. But the ease and frivolity with which we have mass produced plastic on this planet has come with a grave consequence - for every short term gain that we are afforded with using plastic, we have created a substance that either takes thousands of years to biodegrade, or it aggressively contaminates the environment that we rely on to survive.
On Type One Planet, we will be doing a series of conversations about plastic. How to recycle it, how to reuse it, and how to get micro plastics and polymers out of our drinking water and out of our bodies. There are many who believe that this endeavor is directly tied to the short term survival of our species, and the long-term design of a civilization that has learned to sustainably use this astonishing material in our day-to-day lives.
Today, we spoke with Dr. Frank Leibfarth, one such scientist who has set out to understand certain forms of plastic polymers that have been found in our bodies, causing elevated cholesterol, thyroid disease, lowered immunity, cancer, and other disarray in our endocrine system. These polymers enter our bodies through our drinking water, and Frank has dedicated his team to finding a way to remove those materials from our most precious resource. Because of his work Frank was recognized by Popular Science as one of their “Brilliant 10,” a list of scientists and engineers from across the nation who have the potential to transform the world with their innovative approaches to key issues. We sat down to find out why.

Of all the tools human beings use to make decisions, there is one that is one that is highly effective in capturing the will of large populations of people: Democracy. Though the current democratic systems of government are flawed, corrupt, and easily swayed by financial incentives, they appear to be the most fertile ground from which we could grow the foundation for a Type One Planet. The question is, how do we make our democracy truly resilient, unquestionably reliable, and dynamically receptive to new and innovative ideas on how we can redesign our civilization for centuries to come.
Bruce Schneier is a person who has dedicated his life to these questions. He is a public-interest technologist, a cryptographer, and a computer security specialist. He is a fellow and lecturer at Harvard's Kennedy School, and a board member at the Electronic Frontier Foundation, which is dedicated to defending digital privacy, free speech, and innovation.
In his books, articles, and lectures, Bruce has classified Democracy as an Information System that faces a crucial dilemma: In order to exist, Democracies depend on the free flow of accurate information, empowering their citizens to make informed voting decisions, provide policy input, and hold officials accountable. At the same time, information flows can be manipulated to undermine democracy by allowing the unchecked spread of propaganda and pseudo facts. In the dawn of advanced technology like the internet, automation, and machine learning, this manipulation has begun to test the tensile strength of democracy.
In order to survive, the model of democracy must evolve. Let’s explore how that evolution is possible, and what it could look like in the modern technological age.

Lewis Dartnell is an author, presenter, and professor of science communication at the University of Westminster. His works of popular science include The Knowledge: How to Rebuild our World from Scratch and Origins, which looks at how geology has impacted human history.
The Apocalypse: A Global Catastrophe in which our fragile civilization collapses, possibly engineered by human hand, by a massive asteroid, by a raging virus - These events do NOT have a probability of zero, and therefore must be taken seriously.
Let us imagine that, through human negligence or just bad luck, such an event has happened. You are left with the remains of a broken civilization, without access to electricity, the internet, telephones, or even a reliable source of food. Yes, you might be able to survive for a while, maybe even years, but at some point the momentum and the resources from the fallen society will run out. Will you know how to grow food? To purify water? To capture electricity in a homemade battery? Will you know how to rediscover and utilize the incredible inventions of the past?
In 2014, an astrophysicist named Lewis Dartnell wrote a book called “The Knowledge: How to Rebuild our World from Scratch” - It is an instructional manual of sorts, not for skills of survival, but for the cultivation and reinvention of a technologically advanced civilization. It is a civilization seed. When planted in a mind that is curious, industrious, and resilient, this seed has the ability to bear civilizational fruit, and to bring humanity back from the brink of extinction.
Dartnell’s book isn’t meant to save the world - it’s a piece of art, a reminder of our incredible achievements as a species, a spark that lets you see the technological marvels around you in a new light, and as a warning - for this planetary ecosystem is a house of cards - fragile, complex, and worth protecting.

What is a Type One Planet?
In 1964, a man named Nicolai Kardashev created the Kardashev Scale, a model of civilizations in which we could extrapolate on what a successful civilization could look like in the future.
A Type One Civilization is the first stage, in which the dominant species has become a cohesive planetary population that can harness and control 100% of the energy available on that planet. While there are many adaptations on this model, we propose an adaptation that goes beyond the old Soviet focus on energy and power.
Consider instead a Type One Planet. A Type One Planet is a cohesive planetary ecosystem in which the dominant species can harness the energy needed for their civilization, along with the democratization of 100% of the knowledge that is available on the planet. It is a planetary civilization that is in equilibrium with themselves as a population and with the surrounding environment. They're able to sustainably utilize all of the available resources while maximizing the psychological capabilities of its population.
This is a long term, sustainable state in which we can communicate and coexist effectively and peacefully on a planetary scale. A Type One Planet represents absolute democratization of knowledge, energy distribution, life sustaining technology and resources, and environmental balance.
The purpose of this project is to help lay the foundational elements of becoming a Type One Planet.
The Type One Planet podcast is our first step in this process. It features interviews, round tables, debates, and collaborative sessions to ideate on concepts that will enable us to lay the foundation for becoming a Type One Planet. Each guest is a mission driven visionary, including inventors, scientists, and early entrepreneurs. Each interview is a deep exploration on the innovation, technology, or line of scientific study that the guest is pursuing. By the end of each episode, every listener should be able to articulate an explanation of what the guest does, how their innovation works and explore how their work can contribute to the development of a Type One Planet. As we host more guests with similar missions, but unique approaches, we will bring them together in round table collaborative discussions to come up with new ideas and concepts that build towards our common, foundational mission.
