On this day,
Anna Julia Haywood Cooper rose to become one of the best-educated Black Women ever. She went on to earn a PhD at the Sorbonne in France, and excelled as an educator, university founder, author, sociologist, feminist, and an activist against all oppression. She published a seminal book, A Voice from the South, considered to be one of the first major works on feminism. Anna J Cooper died on this day in 1964 at the age of 105.

In 1869, The United States Congress passed The Fifteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution which prohibited states and the federal government from denying a citizen the rights to vote. It, however, only applied to males. It was duly ratified on March 30, 1870.

Kwame Nkrumah was the leader of Ghana from 1957 until this day in 1966 when he was overthrown in a coup d’état at home while on a peace mission to Vietnam. From 1945 until his death, Nkrumah was the greatest advocate of Africans from all over the world to go back to the continent.

Frederick Augustus Washington Bailey, popularly known as Frederick Douglass, diplomat, abolitionist, orator, writer, statesman, formerly enslaved, died from a heart attack in 1895 at his Anacostia home in Washington, DC. He had addressed a meeting of the National Council of Women earlier that day.

The Pan-African Congress was held beginning in 1919 to coincide with the Peace talks in Paris after World War I. W.E.B. DuBois was as usual the driving force behind this meeting, with European colonization in Africa as the main topic. Fifty-seven delegates represented fifteen countries. In all, there have been 8 conferences, the last one held in 2014 in South Africa.

Audre Geraldine Lorde, writer, poet, feminist, womanist, librarian, and activist, was born in 1934 in Harlem, New York. Chloe Anthony Wofford ‘Toni’ Morrison, novelist, editor, essayist, and professor, was born in 1931 in Lorain, Ohio. She won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1993.

Gary Wayne Coleman, comedian, actor, and writer, was born in 1968 in Zion, Illinois. He was a major child start of television in the 1970s and 1980s and starred in the iconic show "Good Times" when it premiered in 1974 on CBS across the US. Dr. Carter G. Woodson started the first Negro History Week to “extend and deepen the study and scholarship on Black History” in 1926. Decades later, it was expanded to cover the whole of February. Radical Reconstructionist Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania on this day in 1866 proposed in Congressional debate on the Freedmen’s Bureau the idea of continuing the practice that started during the war which allocated white confiscated lands to freed Africans after the Civil War. Newly installed president Andrew Johnson, an ally of the Confederates, ensured that this policy did not become law. It was the idea of Forty Acres and a Mule, which reasoned that the newly freed would need resources to live.

Autherine Lucy, the first Black person to be accepted at the University of Alabama after a court order, enrolled for classes in 1956. Three days later, on February 6, the school suspended her saying that she was responsible for riots engaged in by a white mob of over 1000 people.
