Welcome to another episode of Headcases! Today’s guest is uniquely qualified to help beauty professionals build financial confidence. She’s a certified financial educator, licensed fiduciary, licensed hairdresser, and she has spent more than 20 years leading education, artistic development, and business strategy for some of the world’s top beauty brands. Along the way, she discovered a common problem: talented professionals know how to earn money but have never been taught how to build wealth. Now, as the founder of Beauty Finance Group and Beautiful Wealth, she’s on a mission to help all of us create financial freedom, stability, and lasting legacy. Let’s get into this week’s Headcase with my good friend, Anna Manukyan.

Have you ever started a new job, joined a salon, or stepped into a new business, and genuinely wanted to help... only to have people look at you like, "Who are you?" It felt like no matter how hard you worked or how much value you brought, you were invisible.
The truth is, we've all been there.
The reason often has less to do with your talent and more to do with the stage you're in. There's a framework I teach called the Power Model. It's built around six different stages, or conditions, that we all move through in our careers, our finances, our relationships, and even our personal lives. Each stage comes with its own challenges, and if you don't recognize where you are, it's easy to feel stuck or frustrated.
In this episode, I'm going to walk you through the Power Model, explain each of the six stages, and help you understand where you are today. Once you know your current stage, you'll have a much clearer picture of what you need to do next to keep moving forward.

Hey my friends. Are you feeling overwhelmed with too much on your plate? Is your to-do list stealing time away from your friends and family? Are you cramming errands into an already packed day?
Then today’s guest is a must-listen. She’s an award-winning stylist, a national educator, a salon owner, and the founder of Spark Pro Salon, Spark Pro Global, and Alchemy Salon Consulting. Yep, she does all that. Through leadership strategies, delegation, and operational clarity, she helps salon owners step fully into their roles as CEO.
She’s also the host of the Brazen and Bold podcast, and she is passionate about helping entrepreneurs to stop trying to do it all -- and start leading with confidence, purpose, and sustainable growth.
This week’s Headcase will help you get your life back. Here is Heather Harris!

Today's guest is someone very special to me. He has been on Headcases before, and his episode is one of our highest-ranked ever. He's my teacher, my mentor, and a true friend. He played a major role in shaping who I am today as a leader, a speaker, and an educator.
He has trained hundreds of thousands of people across 25 countries in business, leadership, communication, and personal development. He works with Fortune 500 companies to strengthen leadership, elevate performance, and increase sales with results from 15-85%. He has also authored best sellers like Sales Dogs, Little Voice Mastery, and Summit Leadership, and we will get into some of that in today's conversation.
I am so honored to welcome him back once again to Headcases: my friend, teacher, and mentor, Mr Blair Singer.

They are more than just hairdressers–they are two true icons of the industry. They’ve owned prestigious bi-coastal salons. They've built careers as celebrity stylists and TV personalities in their own right. They are major beauty brand spokespeople, and they've created their own luxury retail lines.
But what really sets them apart is where their heart is—education. They’ve spent years traveling the world, inspiring and elevating hairdressers everywhere, and we love them for it. They are among the elite, and they are here with us as today's HeadCases, the incredible Ted Gibson and Jason Backe.

Welcome to another episode of Headcases! Today’s guest used a word that really stuck with me: flourish. Not just to survive… not even just to succeed… but to truly flourish–both financially and artistically.
With over 30 years coaching to the spa and salon industry, he brings deep expertise in marketing, communication, and business operations. He has delivered more than 900 trainings to over 40,000 professionals worldwide, and is widely recognized as an expert in beauty systems and the wellness industry. With a NAHA nomination as Educator of the Year, he has created content for Milady, L’ANZA, DMK International, and the Professional Beauty Association, and he has authored books on financial fitness, interdependent leadership, and the service cycle.
If you’re a salon owner, thinking about becoming one, or you're a stylist looking to strengthen your financial future, this conversation is for you. We talk about helping salons increase sales, streamline operations, boost profits, and build strong leadership from within.
So let’s get into this week’s Headcase, my new good friend, Mr. Steven Gomez.

Today's guest is a repeat offender. He's been on Headcases before, and he never fails to deliver the goods. He brings more than 40 years of experience to the table as a stylist, a manager, a multi-salon owner, and as executive chain director.
He co-founded the Summit Salon Business Center, and for over 35 years he has been the founder and president of the Salon Development Corporation, an international company specializing in salon business training. As a global business educator and salon innovator, he has received countless awards for helping tens of thousands of salon professionals transform their businesses–and their lives. His genius lies in spotting digital marketing and management trends and turning them into practical systems that drive dramatic growth.
He is a teacher of teachers and a mentor of mine, and most importantly a friend. This week's Headcase is the one and only Mr Michael Cole.

Each of these powerhouse women have been my guest in the past, but I could not resist the opportunity to bring these three best friends together for one epic conversation. So settle in and get ready for some laughs, some insight, and some pure inspiration.

I had such a great talk with my guest this week. She is a powerhouse influencer with a mission to elevate and amplify the real life impact of artists, salon owners, and educators on all of us.
She hosts her podcast, coaching, and personal development retreats under the Hair Love University umbrella. I can't wait to share with you this week’s guest: Elizabeth Faye.
• Elizabeth shares the emotional story of how a hairdresser changed her world right when she needed it at 12 years old
• She became ill during the four years of filming the Amazon Prime documentary "Hairstylists Change the World" and had to find her own tools to get better. She now shares these tools with other stylists through her retreats and coaching sessions
• Her mantra is “when you feel good, you do good”
• Find Elizabeth Faye online for her coaching sessions, her Hair Love Retreats, and her podcast Hair Love Radio

Welcome to another episode of Head Cases! This week’s guest is a little different from the norm, and his story is one you’ll never forget. Before I introduce him, let me share a quick story. Back when I used to sail, we had this tradition after races, we’d hand out two awards at the bar: the Aw Shit Award for the one who really messed up, and the Done Good Award for the one who nailed it. And let’s be honest, we’ve all had our “Aw Shit” moments in life, as well as those “Done Good” ones.
When I first heard about Lionel Kearse, I knew I had to bring him on. His life transformation is one of the most dramatic “Aw Shit to Done Good” journeys I’ve ever heard. I won’t give away the details - you’ll hear it best from him, but let me say this: if there was ever someone who embodied the idea that life has no remote -you’ve got to get up and change it yourself, it’s Lionel. So let’s get into this week’s Head Case with my good friend, Lionel Kearse.

This is the second time we’ve had the pleasure of welcoming this incredible guest to Headcases, and for good reason. We started with a powerful conversation about the role of questioning in the salon, as owners, as educators, and as leaders, and it became something much deeper. His perspective as a corporate executive coach carries so much insight I knew I had to bring him back and share even more of that wisdom with you.
Jay Williams is an executive coach who’s worked with Fortune 500 companies. He’s also a dynamic, funny, and thought-provoking speaker. He’s the author of This vs That: Better Thinking, Better Choices, Better Leaders and Leave Your Mark: The Thinking, Skills, and Behaviors of Influencers. Every conversation with him gives me fresh perspective, and I know you'll feel it too. So get comfortable, take it all in, and welcome back Jay Williams.

his week I'm chatting with someone I admire very much as a no-nonsense truth teller who leads with love. She is a published author. She is a world-renowned keynote speaker. She owns three schools and three salons where her mission is not to hire employees but to develop future partners. This mindset makes her a key part of the John Maxwell Team, one of the world's top leadership training organizations. She led nationwide values-based leadership initiatives for 25,000 leaders with Maxwell at the invitation of the governments of Guatemala and Costa Rica. And she co-hosts the Next Level Salon Podcast. This week's Headcase is the incredible Tina Black.

"What would you do if a person with autism sat in your chair for a haircut? What if the sounds of the salon triggered an episode—causing them to holler, scream, or bounce? Or if they were terrified of clippers? Would you know how to help?
That’s exactly why I’m so excited about today’s guest. Welcome to another episode of Head Cases! Our guest is not only a visionary but also the founder and CEO of Sensory Safe Solutions. With 24 years in the salon industry, she brings not just professional expertise but also a deeply personal perspective as a parent to a son with autism. Her firsthand experiences navigating the challenges of haircuts led her to dedicate the last five years to researching and refining sensory-safe haircuts.
In just 18 months, she has successfully certified over 2,400 providers across 12 states and nine countries—establishing Sensory Safe Solutions as a game-changer for the industry. Thanks to her work, salon professionals now have the tools and knowledge to create a more inclusive and supportive experience for all clients.
Let’s dive into this week’s Head Case with the incredible Kate Owens Heins!

This week I'm with a great friend who is a 13-time NAHA finalist and winner. His work has appeared in almost every industry magazine in the world. He’s been on Oprah, CNN, and Good Morning America. He has styled for movies, music videos, and fashion runways. Here is Mr Nicholas French!
• One of the best pieces of advice that Nicholas got from his father when he was only 10 years old: “Keep your eyes open 24 hrs a day because you never know what you are going to see”. You have to always be on the lookout for inspiration.
• Nick explains how he makes the distinction between fantasy and avant garde.
• Nicholas’s favorite quote: "Fashion is fleeting but technique stays the same."

Today's guest is especially exciting for me - not just because he’s an incredibly talented hairdresser, but because his passions extend far beyond hair to art, music, and fashion. Based in the UK, his creativity and vision have landed his work in TV and top industry magazines.
Recently, Creative Head Magazine honored him with the Business Thinker Award for building an outstanding multi-faceted brand. They even called him a ‘genius and an inspiration,’ and once you hear about his journey, you’ll see why. From salons and studios to academies and even a farm that sources ingredients for his product line, he has created a truly multi-platform empire.
He is the founder and creative director of the Electric brand, which includes Electric Salons, the Electric Studio, Electric Education Academy, and the Electric product range. Let’s dive into this week’s Headcases with the visionary Mark Woolley.

My guest this week is Shane Price, founder and CEO of Green Circle Salons, which helps salons become sustainable through the four pillars: be green, gain clients, build revenue, and save money. With over 16,000 members, they reclaim and repurpose more than 1 million pounds of beauty waste every year.
Join us and Shane and I discuss what salons can do to reduce their environmental footprint and make a real difference.

Today I’m chatting with a true entrepreneur. She is a hairdresser, a school co-owner, a school franchise co-owner, and her 25,000 square foot salon and med spa has been voted one of the top 100 salons by Elle Magazine no less than four times. I am so pleased to bring you my good friend Jill Krahn.
⁃ How did she get from a 3-chair boutique to her current 25,000ft salon with med spa and restaurant?
⁃ She had a detailed plan for running a very successful large salon, but no exit strategy. How will she know when it’s time to stop away?
⁃ What mistakes did she make along the way?
⁃ What’s the one biggest thing she wishes she’d done differently?

He is a top editorial stylist frequently to be found on set, styling for top magazines like Glamour, Cosmopolitan, Lucky, and Oprah Magazine. He’s a go-to artist at New York Fashion Week and a lead stylist in the bridal business. He’s a Redken International Artist, an entrepreneur, and the creator of Tear Sheets. He’s also a good friend, and it’s been too long since I last spoke to him. Please welcome Giovanni Giuntoli.
Giovanni slipped into the hair business completely by accident, striking up a conversation with a salon owner while serving him ice cream at Baskin Robbins. It led to a summer job at the salon and then straight on to beauty school.
Giovanni wanted to share his wealth of editorial and fashion experience. He saw that many talented hairstylists wanted to break into editorial work but had no idea how. He created Tear Sheets to provide them with the education they needed, including how to get hired for fashion shoots.

Ivan describes the “Right Pricing” and respecting the client’s perception of value (the price value proposition).
Right now, stylists are seeing their clients “down market test”. Listen to find out what Ivan says about this issue.

My guest this week was only a student when he became a NAHA finalist. He spent 10 years as an educator internationally and established technical academies across the globe. Today, he oversees the education team at Floyd's 99 Barbershops and this year he publishes his first book in collaboration with his sister Melissa. I've known him for years and I am so excited to share him with you on Headcases. Here is Patrick Butler.
• While at NAHA, he introduced himself to Irvine Rusk and, as a student, asked for career advice. Irvine told him to do good work over and over again until you master it. Fail, start over, and keep doing it.
• While with American Crew, Patrick worked on stage around the world and taught at several AC academies. The experienced built his confidence and developed his skill set beyond his expectations.
• If you can master the cause and effect - the why - in the foundational skills - you will be able to adapt to any challenge or trend that comes your way.
• What does Patrick mean when he says "100% is easy, 90% is hard"?

She is the resident master colorist at the Butterfly Studio salon in New York and she is a L'Oréal Professionnel International Artist. Thousands of hairdressers around the world have used her training videos. She is a corrective color expert and she is my next guest on Headcases: meet Min Kim.
• She thought she was destined to be a doctor, but she was always drawn to the beauty industry.
• In her earliest days as an educator for L'Oréal Professionnel, she realized you have to be true to your authentic self, and not try to wear a version of yourself based on someone else.
• Min wants us to learn from our mistakes - they always have something to teach. Some people get stuck and never get past them.
• Her best advice for stylists just starting out: listen, be present, pay attention. And don't be afraid of failure.

My guest this week is someone really special to me. I've known him since he was a little kid, traveling around to hair shows with his dad. Since then he has won Australian Hairdresser of the Year three times, and Educator of the Year four times in a row. He is a globally recognized educator, and a great guy. Today I'm catching up with Jules Tognini!
• Jules grew up around many enormously successful artists in the hair industry, thinking of them as aunties and uncles. It wasn't until years later he would realize how cool they were.
• Naturally hairdressing was the last career he wanted. He pursued an interest in fashion and traveled the world for many years.
• Restless again, he asked his dad for a job at the salon, and soon discovered his passion
• Benni Tognini is a mentor to Jules, and Jules is the first to admit he idolizes him
• "Nothing gets handed to you unless you apply."

Our podcast guest this week is a former CPA and has owned multiple salons internationally. He is recognized as a trusted financial expert and leader in the beauty and wellness business. He is a board member for Beauty Changes Lives, and is the founder of Qnity for Salons, Qnity for Schools, and Qnity Institute. He is known for his talent for simplifying finance and money matters, making them visual and approachable for creative professionals. His latest study with the Qnity Institute is very revealing, and we're going to get into it right now with Tom Kuhn.
While Tom was a CPA, he gravitated towards working with the creative industries, such as art dealers and art agencies. Later he became a CFO in a distribution company and discovered a love for educating his clients in finance.
• Tom was frustrated with the lack of financial data in the beauty industry, especially with earnings, so he founded the Qnity Institute to get to the bottom of it.
• That flagship study revealed that 24% of the respondents would have made over $100,000 if they had worked 40 hours a week, and that the average income was $38/hr

When he was just 22 years old, this week's guest was appointed Creative Director at Sassoon's. He was named Educator of the Year in his first year at Paul MItchell. His no-fluff approach to teaching and his ability to break down the what, when, why, and how in haircutting have made him one of the world's most sought-after educators. It was a genuine pleasure to get to know him better. Here is DJ Muldoon.
• He got started in the 90s at Sassoon's in Santa Monica, where the motto was "you do it until you can't do it wrong."
• He'd only been there a few months when he was asked to appear in a commercial shoot and he met Vidal Sassoon in person. It was the beginning of a personal mentorship under Vidal.
• After years with Sassoon he moved to Paul Mitchell, working with them for nearly a decade.
• DJ partnered with several other stylists to create their own production company to shoot for Paul Mitchell and their own educational videos.

Speaking with my guest this week was such a pleasure. She is a NAHA winner and 5-time finalist. She is the founder and co-owner of the Hair Lab Barber School in Detroit, and she is frequently sought after as a freelance educator and public speaker. She has been featured in magazines as a curly hair specialist. She recently won the Midwest Hairstyling Awards trifecta as Texture Artist of the Year, Master Stylist of the Year, and Hairstylist of the Year. Please join me in conversation with my new friend, Lauren Moser-Samuels.
• She met Rodrick Samuels in a clipper cutting course, and their instant bond led to a new career, marriage, and a life-long partnership
• Lauren recalls her start with curly hair by doing her sister's hair, with plenty of feedback both good and bad
• Taxes, ethics, and growth in the beauty industry
• Rodrick encouraged her to enter NAHA at a time when she was not focused on hair, so the win was especially validating of her talent

One word sums up my guest this week - ambition! He is, right now, taking exclusive appointments at no less than seven different salons in the US and Switzerland. Hailed by the professional beauty press as a rising star from his earliest days, he now has his own shears line and is world-renowned as a pioneer of dry cutting. I am excited to sit down with this week's Headcase, Mike Karg.
from the first time he saw Trevor Sorbie on stage in London he knew he wanted exactly that
his company, Karg Shears, was the first to cut hair in a booth at trade shows
Mike talks about his dry hair cutting process and what makes it so exceptional
how does Mike Kark decompress? Ultra running. I think I'll stick to cheerleading at the finish line, thanks

My very special guest this week is so committed to elevating the salon industry that he wrote a best-selling book about it called "Beautiful Business". He won NAHA's Lifetime Achievement Award and Editorial Stylist of the Year, and was inducted into the London Hairdresser Hall of Fame. He has a very successful salon in Manhattan and I am proud to call him a good friend. Please welcome Sam Brocato.
• Sam became hooked on the beauty industry at 16, when his mom took him to her part-time job at a local beauty school
• early in his career he showed his boss an ad in Modern Salon for training in London, and he gave him the money to sign up. Everyone was there at Sassoon's - Vidal, Trevor Sorbie, Christopher Booker, Roger Thompson
• Paul Mitchell and Horst Rechelbacher both encouraged Sam, even if it was in very different ways
• The title of Sam's book, Beautiful Business, refers to using both sides of the brain - creative and logical. Sam has always tried to use both to propel his very successful career.

I have been really looking forward to today. My guest is the author of the best-seller "Profitable Salon Owners" and the co-founder of High Performance Salon Academy. He has led wildly successful training events for Redken, Matrix, Massage Envy, Nordstrom, Baskin Robbins, and the US Army. He is my business coach and a very dear friend: Mr Jason Everett.
• Three words that capture Jason's essence for me - Positivity, Energy, and Mindset.
• Jason’s energy comes naturally to him, and he loves to encourage others. Where other coaches tear you down, he builds you up, and after training with him you'll feel smarter and stronger.
• Jason shares the 4 strategies at the core of the High Performance Salon Academy: Attract, Keep, Deliver, and Grow.
• He discusses how important it is for owners to delegate tasks and create jobs, rather than trying to do it all themselves.

• Hear how Jamal got into education in the hair industry, how it fills his cup, and how it pushes him further in his creativity.
• Jamal has a unique approach to working with Evie Johnson in major competitions. Not only is she his partner in inspiration and creativity, but in accountability too.

Today I sit down with the Midwest Hairstyling Awards Hairstylist of the Year, NAHA Educator of the Year and Director of the Hair Labs Detroit Barber School, Mr Rodrick Samuels.
Rodrick shares some great nuggets of wisdom this week including his top 3 list for students - you have to show up, you have to work hard and you have to listen.
He shares how education has changed so much from when he was in school, how teaching is 1000% different now.
Hear about the importance of failure and how this has always pushed Rodrick in his lifetime.
⁃How did she get from a 3-chair boutique to her current 25,000ft salon with med spa and restaurant?
⁃She had a detailed plan for running a very successful large salon, but no exit strategy. How will she know when it’s time to stop away?
⁃What mistakes did she make along the way?
⁃What’s the one biggest thing she wishes she’d done differently?
This week’s guest is a personal friend, a successful salon owner, a powerful advocate for the LGBTQ+ community, a NAHA winner as Men’s Hairstylist of the Year, and a key contributor to the Hair Has No Gender movement. She is someone I admire very much: Jamie DiGrazia.
⁃Jamie discusses the importance of gender-free pricing and breaks down the method used at their salon to price their hair cuts.
⁃Logan Parlor’s consultation is different. It’s a premium service in itself.
⁃Jamie shares how to start a dialogue about hair with questions about each element of the haircut.
This week’s guest is doing amazing things. She rose from homelessness to being one of the country’s most celebrated and respected stylists. She is a certified tricologist, a salon owner, a NAHA finalist, ABS Global Image award nominee, Behind the Chair One Shot finalist and so much more. I’m very happy to sit down with Evie Johnson on Headcases.
-Listen to Evie’s amazing journey, how she started in beauty school at age 13
-Evie has such a drive that she was appointed Artistic Director at age 23
-She became a Tricologist (a specialist who studies the diseases and problems related to hair and scalp)
-How the right mindset meant everything to her success
On Headcases this week I’m speaking with a Harvard and Wharton Business School grad and founder of Busy Salons. He is president of Salon Ninja, and the creator of A-Game Mastery Coaching. He is a Hi-Performance coach and has worked with many high profile salon artists. It’s my honour today to chat with Andrew Finkelstein.
⁃Andrew shares how he got started in the beauty industry after graduating from Harvard business school
⁃How business school was helpful to a point, but he realized that many people have to start with training their minds to think like a business person, and that doesn’t necessarily mean the numbers
⁃Managing starts with managing yourself, and building the right habits
