Yes, Virginia. It’s Okay to Blame China! Because China is responsible for one of the worst pandemics in history. They created a monster of a virus, they released it (by mistake or on purpose), they hid the local epidemic that resulted, they allowed thousands of Chinese people to leave China and visit the world, and they refused to take responsibility and blamed America.
“It was the best of times; it was the worst of times.” The virus has brought the world to a screeching halt. And as we approach Passover and Easter, the realities of this nightmare are balanced by the hope that our scientists and doctors will use today’s technology to find a test, a cure, and a vaccine to prevent this from happening again.
We are in the middle of a great plague. Life is almost surreal, COVID-19 still has not yet reached its moment of greatest fury – and Americans are still sitting on the cusp. It wasn’t a particularly good week for the Democrats. First there was the impeachment acquittal, and then the fallout from the absolute chaos of the Iowa caucus. The New Hampshire primaries with a Socialist winning the prize. And Virginia’s new gun law. Wow! What a week! Also, we cannot forget the scary coronavirus, which has experts worried, and that cruise ship from hell.
There were three big stories this week - the debacle of the Iowa Caucus, the President’s State of the Union speech, and the ongoing story of the Coronavirus. And a sad story about one of our favorite people.
Two big stories this week: The coronavirus called 2019-n-CoV that’s raging in China. It’s a killer! And President Trump’s Middle East Peace Plan – the “Deal of the Century”. And, oh yes, the impeachment that goes on and on. But the Republican defense was awesome!
The Riot That Didn’t Happen and Other Stories - The big story this week was the story about 16,000 Virginia gun owners who converged on the capital in Richmond and didn’t start a riot. But Oh! How the governor and his fellow politicians panicked! The big story this past week was the dangerous confrontation with Iran after our drones killed their most senior terrorist. It could have led to war – but didn’t. Instead the people of Iran are in the streets throughout the country, fighting for their freedom. And meanwhile the dysfunction in Washington continues to get worse, Hong Kong is strangely silent, Jeopardy! hit a snag, and Austin Texas is in real trouble.

The President’s speech at the U.N. was Epic! Still, an unidentified whistleblower in an anonymous complaint has attacked the President - again. But the most outrageous attack against him came from a fellow Republican. Israel’s elections and another stalemate. A secret mission for the head of Iran’s elite al Quds force. Followed by Iraqi Shia militias massing on the Iraqi–Syrian/Iraqi-Jordanian borders. Israel and Saudi Arabia carried out joint bombing raids on both. What a week!
Israel spying on U.S.? Not likely. The story didn’t pass the smell test. And Netanyahu says, “War with Hamas is inevitable.” But he may not have won the election? So what now? And what about Iran. Do they already have nukes? And then there is the professor who has told us that good grammar is racist, and Beto has pledged to take our guns. What a week this has been!
The troubles that are brewing in China are now centering around the trade talks and the incipient confrontation in Hong Kong are a recipe for trouble. The slanders that are so freely tossed around in America (“racist”, “Nazi”, “white supremacist”) are the tools of stupid people who never studied history and haven’t a clue what they are talking about. Debates and Conferences Take Over Prime Time - The big stories of the week revolved around the Democrat debates in Florida and the G20 Conference in Osaka, Japan. As the Democrats sharpened their wits in order to “out-left” their opponents, the President did his best to negotiate his way through the G20 and succeed he did. Meanwhile, Israel discovered a 2,000-year-old tunnel in Jerusalem, and reports of a Russian submarine going down off the coast of Alaska raised fears of new tensions between the U.S. and Russia. All in all, it was another interesting week.
The President is damned if he does, and damned if he doesn’t. At least that’s what the Democrats think. And now he faces Iran, but as far as his opposition at home, he can’t win. Still he has grit and he doesn’t give up. And his new peace initiative for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict just got its first airing in Bahrain. How did he do? In the mean time, Hamas has lit the match that may set off a new and bloodier war against Israel than has ever happened before. And because Israel is our strong ally, this will involve America as well. This is a story that hasn’t ended yet.
The attack against a synagogue in California was one more reminder that the rise of anti-Semitism in America is raising specters of Germany in the 1930s. And the push by new Congresswomen to promote a switch to socialism in America reminds us of the Soviet Union then and Venezuela now. Santayana said “Those who don’t learn from history are destined to repeat it.” So this week we will look to history to see if we can find the clues to our own national salvation.
