Welcome everyone to Bobcat Chat. A podcast designed to immerse you in the culture and happenings here at Haywood Community College. Each episode, one of our hosts will meet up with someone GREAT and interview them to see what they’re all about. We hope your ears are ready, because we’ve got a lot to chat about!
You may be a bird person, or not a bird person, but either way this episode is super fun! Andrew Isenhower, one of our Natural Resource instructors sits down with us to share some of his favorite odd bird sounds. You’ll hear from birds such as the Wood Duck, Barn Owl, Acorn Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, and a very special one only found in Australia. Grab those binoculars and get ready for a great time on Bobcat Chat with a variety of bird calls and learn a little about the birds while enjoying their calls.
Haywood Community College will hold the first Dahlia Ridge Trail Run on Saturday, September 16. This 5k is a family-friendly walk/run event open to all levels of runners, walkers, and hikers. Participants will receive a t-shirt and enjoy a post-race party with live music and food available for purchase. All proceeds will benefit the Haywood Strong Scholarship for displaced mill employees. Online registration is open through September 13, and participants need to register by August 30 to be guaranteed a race shirt.
Haywood Community College has worked hard to expand the on-campus trail system this past year. This project was officially completed in May, and with the trails reaching over 3 miles on campus, coordinating a fun run seemed an appropriate next step.

HCC is planning many exciting events and reasons for students to connect this fall. In this episode we sat down with Ethan Hall, Coordinator of Student Life. He gives us the scoop on planned activities, his hopes for students, and a little about his time here at HCC when he was a student. With the start of the fall semester upon us - welcome to Season 2 of Bobcat Chat!
Ever wonder about how our team supports students? We chatted with Bridget on the Student Success team to get insight into these details. We also talk a little about returning to school as an adult learner and a few tips and tricks to stay on track while in school.
HCC is Nationally recognized for our Natural Resources Program. With a variety of subjects, programs, and certifications available it’s nice to know a little more about this unique program. We sat down with two of our instructors to learn more! If you’ve been wondering what the difference is between Fish & Wildlife Management and Forestry Management – here’s your chance to hear all about it! In this episode, Andrew and George share the differences, similarities, and a bit about how to succeed in the program.
Have you ever wondered how a trail through the woods is even made? In this episode we sat down with Todd Branham with Long Cane Trails to talk about how he entered this industry, how it’s grown over the years and what all goes into building a trail system. It’s interesting to learn about the equipment to physically build the trails as well as how the planning process works. HCC’s trail build had its challenges and successes, just like any new trail, but the results is a stacked loop system that incorporates nature and pavement making it unique with great resources for length options and safety measures. Having a love for learning doesn’t come to all of us naturally. Once Tim Scapin found his passion within higher education, he never dreamed where it could take him. Tim is an Instructional Designer and Media Specialist with HCC and his start at a community college has helped guide his educational journey. In this episode we chat about where he started and where he is now along his higher educational path. He has had the opportunity to travel abroad as part of an international collaboration project and is very much looking forward to where his journey will take him in the years to come as he supports HCC students and works toward his doctorate degree simultaneously.
