The country of Brazil gets a Level 2 travel advistory from the US State Department, but specific neighborhoods in Rio de Janeiro get a Level 4, which means DO NOT TRAVEL. Clark talks about the favelas. Would you go into a favela? Would you travel to a Level 4 country? There are currently 19 counties in the world that get a Level 4 Travel Advisory.

Part 2 of Thailand! In 2014, Clark Vandeventer and his family spent 3 months in Thailand. In this episode, Clark talks about the intense love the Thai people had for their king, King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who died in 2016. The current King of Thailand, King Maha Vajiralongkorn is the wealthiest monarch in the world.
In this episode Clark compares Phuket to Koh Samui, and talks about one of his all-time worst travel experiences. He also talks about the huge difference betweeen the way Westerners and the people of Thailand think about mixing religion with public life.

Clark Vandeventer interviews Alisa Lybbert on New Zealand!
Alisa and her husband Jared met in Alaska when they were both in college. They got married and continued to live in Alaska seasonally for the first 7 summers of their marriage. Kids came along -- and yet -- for the first 10 years of being married -- they never spent more than 5 or 6 months in one place -- except for an 11 month stint in Mexico.
They’ve now been married for 20 years -- they have 6 kids ranging from 5 to 18 years old. They lived in and traveled throughout Mexico for 2 years. They spent 3 months backpacking Europe. Spent 3 months in Southeast Asia, and have visited 20 different countries as a family.
And -- in this interview -- she focuses on New Zealand.
Alisa and Jared run an ecommerce business, where they develop products, build their own brands, and market and sell them on platforms like Amazon. In an effort to diversify, they recently launched a franchise called ACASA Senior Care.
They are awesome people, living life intentionally, and you are going to love this interview and all of her insights about travel and New Zealand.

Clark Vandeventer interviews George Beals about Azerbaijan.
In 2014, George became the Director of Strategic Development for World Hope International. Before serving with World Hope, George served his local church as the Pastor of Global Ministries for over two decades. He was the very first missions pastor in his denomination. While serving as the missions pastor, his church was involved in sending their people short-term and long-term cross-culturally. George led the church to strategize their part in fulfilling the Great Commission.
George earned a Doctor of Applied Intercultural Studies degree with a concentration in International Relief and Development. His research was on training Christian business professionals who are working cross-culturally. George is the director of the missions pastor forum for West Michigan, which brings together mission pastors and mission agency leaders to exchange ideas. In 2019, George participated in the United Nations High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development in New York City.
Sometimes, in humanitarian work, and in relief and development work, we can do more harm than good. I have spent a lot of time thinking about these unintended consequences, and how we can do relief and development work that helps without hurting.
I've thought a LOT about this, but George has thought a LOT more than me. He’s studied it. And he has experience in it. He’s traveled to 45+ countries -- some that no longer exist.

James and Angela live in Southern Utah and are parents to three teenagers and a tween. James started an education company and ran it for 14 years and he transitioned out of that two years ago and has been on a sabbatical since. James and Angela. They are intentional people. In the interview -- you will hear James refer to Adventure being one of their family values. They have identified their family values being WELL-BEING, CONNECTION, CREATIVITY, and ADVENTURE. And Travel is how they live their value of adventure together.
A lot of really cool perspectives in this interview -- and I sort of feel like Spain was just a jumping off point to get them to talk about lots of cool things they have come to know through their deliberate travels -- but -- I loved their individual answers at the end of this interview about their top experiences in Spain.

Clark Vandeventer interviews JT & Lydia Gardner about life in Spain.
Clark and his family got to know JT and Lydia when their lives intersected for a few months while they were both living in Guatemala.
Lydia and JT Gardner have been married for 2 and ½ years. JT is a student at Brigham Young University and will graduate in April with a degree in International Relations. Lydia is working as a high school seminary teacher for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and is working on a Master’s degree in Organizational Leadership through Gonzaga University. The couple spent a summer in Guatemala a month after they were married. The following year, JT was doing research in Spain and Morocco with one of his professors, so Lydia decided to study Spanish and live in Barcelona while he studied. Spending time in Spain was special because JT had lived in various locations throughout Spain for 2 years while serving there as a missionary. JT spent time in Mexico and Peru on humanitarian trips while in High School. The couple loves adventures and doing hard things together. They have completed several marathons and love riding their tandem bike around Utah. In this interview, they talk about how different the pace of life is in Spain compared to the United States. Late night dinners, festivals, community, history, and Gaudi! This was such a fun conversation!

Jo Anne talked about how she admires Sierra Leone's ABILITY TO RECOVER FROM A BRUTAL WAR WITH TRUTH AND RECONCILIATION.

As the founder and previous CEO of World Hope International, Jo Anne directed the faith-based relief and development organization into over 30 countries to alleviate suffering and injustice. During her time as CEO, she was involved with several countries experiencing fragility, conflict and violence with a strong focus on the role of faith. Her previous 30 years of pastoral ministry contributed to the effectiveness of the work. Following 12 years of service to World Hope International she was elected as the General Superintendent of The Wesleyan Church worldwide. She served in that position for eight years. At the close of her tenure, she was invited to serve as the Ambassador for The Wesleyan Church for the following four years by action of the General Board to retain the considerable connections and influence she has had to extend the influence of the Church.
Jo Anne serves on the board of directors of many organizations such as Bread for the World, Vice-Chair of the Board of National Association of Evangelicals, National Religious Partnership for the Environment, Council on Faith of the World Economic Forum, previously President Obama’s Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships and others.
She holds a master’s degree in Counseling Psychology, continued graduate studies in Historical Theology and has been granted five honorary doctorates. She is an ordained minister of the Wesleyan Church. The recipient of the 2016 “World Methodist Peace Award”, 2017 “Keeper of the American Dream Award” from the National Immigration Forum in Washington DC as well as various other awards.
Dr. Lyon and her husband, Rev. Wayne Lyon, live in the Indianapolis area. They have four children and 10 grandchildren.

Clark became acquainted with Sabina and her family around 2010 or 11 when he and his wife had crashed and burned and were trying to re-invent their life. At that time, blogs were a big thing -- and they got connected with so many cool people around the world. Sabina was one of those people.

Born in Poland. Her family immigrated to America when she was 5 years old. Sweden is the most populous of the Scandinavian countries, and more than half of it is covered in forest. In 2017, Clark rode his bike solo and unassisted from Stockholm, Sweden to Copenhagen Denmark. That was a 500 mile bike ride, with about 470 of those miles being in Sweden. This is a wonderful and fascinating country with a long history.

Brazil is the world's 5th largest country by land mass and the 7th largest country by population. It's also home to the world's #1 and #3 tallest statues of Jesus in the world. Antarctica is home of the world's biggest ice cube. The Ross Ice Shelf is about the size of France! It's also a difficult place to pee. All trash is transported off the continent, including human waste, and if you go on a hike, you have to take a pee bottle with you. In this episode of the podcast Clark talks about Hong Kong -- the wealthy capitalistic dependecy of Communist China. The "one country, two systems" agreement put in place by Margaret Thatcher in 1984 before Hong Kong would transfer to Chinese rule in 1997. Tokyo is the most populated metro area in the world with about 40 Million people, meaning there are more people in Tokyo than the whole country of Canada. This week we are in North and South Korea and we have two countries that could not be more different. Clark had a student from South Korea in class this week so we were able to get some insights from someone who is from that country. We talked about the leadership of the highly controversial Kim Jong Un of North Korea and contrasted that with the leadership of Park Chung Hee in South Korea (who was also a dictator, by the way, but he was backed by the US because he was a free-market dictator).
This week in Around the World with Mr. Clark we went to China. The most populous country in the world is also the place where the greatest migration in human history is currently taking place. In 1958 with the launching of Mao's Great Leap Forward the goal was the transition China from an agrarian society to an industrial society. That goal was achieved. 50 Million people died. But the migration of China from Rural China to the Urban Centers is astounding, and there are now 160+ cities in China with more than a million people. In this episode Clark also talks about where Confucius ranks in terms of the most impactful people in history.
