Continuing her commitment to women’s health, Dr. Odunsi underwent fellowship training in Minimally Invasive and Robotic Surgery in Gynecology and Reproductive Surgery at Nezhat Medical Center and Northside Hospital, GA.

Dr. Odunsi has practiced in many states across the country, including Washington, Georgia, Florida, and currently, Illinois. She is passionate about equitable healthcare, building trusting patient-provider relationships, and improving processes that support continuity of care.

We as physicians often still follow archaic notions of how medicine should be practiced.

If I had a dollar for every time I heard an older attending say how we don’t have it as bad as they did, and that we just need to push through it and work…I would never work again. I could be a lady of leisure.

Tune in to this week's episode to hear why these practices are not applicable in your medical careers or in today's economy and culture, and why you need to change your goalposts.

As doctors, July marks a series of new transitions – from being a student in training to resident to an attending. For me, every July reminds me of the time when I made the mindset shift from being a “pick me” doc to discovering the type of attending I wanted to be, because I knew for a fact that this wasn’t the career I wanted.

This episode is for you if you feel like you are the person that is really “grateful to have been chosen,” “grateful to just have a job,” and you're trying to convince yourself that it's more important to go along and get along.

If you want to release the guilt of asking for what you need and become an attending that sets and reinforces boundaries, tune in!

Be honest, do you force yourself to show up when you probably shouldn't? I’m talking sickness, mental health breaks, and burnout. Are you honoring yourself and what you need?

I ask this question but I already know that most of us push through what we need to continue working.

After returning home from vacation last week I got hit (punched) with the flu and yet I still went back and forth with myself on rescheduling my commitments. It’s honestly a continued struggle even though we know the principles of self care. The way we feel we need to honor work before we honor ourselves is WILD.

Tune in to hear my internal process on rescheduling my commitments and why you need to do the same thing, when you need a break.

What would you ask for in your current role if you knew you could get it? Higher salary? More paid time off? Would you enforce your boundaries more?

I empower you to really think about that question, because what if it just all worked out? Why not, right?

Join me in today’s episode where I share my thoughts on asking for what you want, even when it's extremely uncomfortable. I won’t sit here and pretend that I don’t also experience that discomfort when I negotiate. It’s a natural feeling when asking for something that you feel puts you at risk.

Tune in as I cover my current position on boundary setting at work and at home, my thoughts on entrepreneurship, and why I no longer feel compelled to solve problems that aren’t within my pay grade. Not my pay grade, not my problem y’all.

What does job security mean to you? Is it just simply having a job, even if you hate it, even if you're underpaid? At least you’re employed, right? Or…is it having a job that you love, with a salary that you actually deserve and time freedom to have a life of your own outside of work.

I’ll give you a hint, it ain’t the first one.

But it is ingrained in us to just be grateful for the employment we have because we are “lucky” to have been chosen, we’re “lucky” to even be there and get a paycheck no matter the amount. Ew.

If you resonate with the feeling of “I should be grateful to have a job,” then this episode is for you. You are worth so much more and you worked too hard to be in a job that you don’t enjoy. Listen to this episode, then reach out to me and let’s get this fixed!

Hating your job doesn't automatically mean changing careers.

That non clinical job isn't a magic gateway to joy or freedom.

If you are considering leaving medicine for a non-clinical role because it feels more sustainable, then let me save you some trouble.

You can end up overworked, underpaid, and disrespected anywhere.

You will hate your job in any setting if you don’t speak up for what you want.

If the reason you are burnt out in medicine is because of the lack of agency in your own life, that is something we can negotiate.

Join me while I share how I came to realize that after years of schooling…I was not about the physician life. I was able to like medicine again by changing my whole definition of what it means to work as a doctor; working less and earning more.

I also share a real case study of how I helped my client negotiate her way to working less and earning $50k more (yep, that's right).

Join me for the 75th episode of The Black Doctor Collective Podcast as I discuss how we have been bamboozled into this false narrative of how to practice self care. Raise your hand if you have been focused on facials and spa treatments, shopping, yoga, and meditation. Don’t get me wrong, I love and partake in all of those things but I am realizing that's not how to create sustainable self care practices.

I’ve come to see that true self care is having the agency to make my own choices on what I need and then decidingwhen and how I get to do them. (what a concept!).

Tune in for more on how self care is all about having agency and how I’ve negotiated a schedule that allows self care to be a regular practice for me.

Come hangout with me while I recap my recent birthday trip to Grenada and share about my addiction to productivity.

In this episode, I talk about how my learned behaviors from years of medical training are now seeping into my everyday life, including vacations and “off’-time”. Constantly trying to be the most productive and be the best for my patients, has led me to being addicted to productivity and not knowing how to just truly relax.

Tune in to hear stories of how I nearly scared off my boyfriend by meticulously planning every second of our first vacation together. Your girl loves a plan!

I was recently asked to speak at my med school back in Grenada, which was a full circle moment. I of course said yes. I wondered “What would I have needed to hear at that stage?”

I reflected on my own journey from med school to becoming an attending. Starting out as a busy medical student, to residency and fellowship, and then practicing medicine while learning a sense of balance by prioritizing myself and a balanced lifestyle.

It’s been a ride. I think my biggest takeaway from this journey down memory lane is that I’ve always found ways to fill my cup. It is why I am a good doctor. It’s why I don’t feel bad for prioritizing vacations. I built this life so I can not only be the best for me but for my patients.

Tune in to hear how I have done this over the years, throughout med school to now.

Q1 has been one for the books. Lot’s of learning experiences and overall growth moments. I’m spilling all the tea on how I failed to follow my own framework that I teach to my coaching clients. I share what I didn’t do, what I compromised on, and how those choices have led to less than desirable working conditions.

I’ve had three MAJOR takeaways from Q1. First, the importance of building self-trust through personal metrics. Second, why you should constantly be evaluating your work environments. Third, understanding that being a confident negotiator equates to being courageous enough to ask for what you want.

Tune in to hear all the work drama (it’s good, y’all) but also to learn what these three takeaways can mean for you as a negotiator.

I spent some time reflecting on the last three months – really diving into the process of what made me successful, what worked, what didn't, what I enjoyed and disliked. All the things. What I realized is that it all comes down to delegation.

I am my best when I am not bogged down with a to-do list. Sure, there will always be things that I have to do and only I can do them, but that is not the majority. In fact, most of the tasks that fill up my to-do list are something I can delegate. I am willing to bet that this is the case for you too.

My biggest takeaway from delegating the last few months: I am actually able to focus on tasks that will move the needle for both my business and just my overall happiness. Join me as I share the hurdles I had to overcome to delegate and then my learning process with how to delegate and release control to my team.

Be wary of terms like “team player” and “above and beyond”.

The same words employers use to praise you, they’ll use to criticize.

When you refuse to do what they want, take work home, do unpaid tasks, they’ll weaponize these terms to attack your character. Creating my own measures for success meant I could see this strategy for what it was: a faulty negotiation tactic.

Today's episode covers why you need to create your own metrics.

You can create your success measures so you can distinguish between true feedback and manipulative communication. You must learn how to become a strong, clear, unflappable negotiator.

We're going to talk about how to approach problems like a boss.

First off, let's ask ourselves, "Is this really a problem, or how is this my problem?"

You would expect that because we're doctors, and we deal with life and death situations all the time, personal decisions wouldn't be so dang difficult. But since life is always lifing, Mercury is doing a backstroke or theres a full moon, we have things that come up and disrupt our life.

The next step is deciding: solve? or eradicate? And if we do decide to solve it, let's break it down into bite-sized pieces. So, grab your wine or tea, and let's get problem-solving like the pros we are!

We are back for the continuation of last episode's conversation with Dr Kerri!

We discussed being neurodivergent in medicine. We also talk about when things weren't working out for dr Kerri she was forced to follow a different and now better path. Listen in to learn about trauma informed work in justice, equity, diversity and inclusion.

ABOUT Dr Kerri

Dr. Kerri M. Lockhart is a westside Chicago native, born and raised near Humboldt Park. She graduated from Northwestern University, with a BA in Psychology. Dr. Lockhart pursued her lifelong desire to become a physician via Southern Illinois University’s MEDPREP program, graduating from SIU School of Medicine. Her first-choice residency match in general pediatrics at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Illinois, represented a full-circle moment, bringing her home to Chicago, and the community she loves and desired to serve. Dr. Lockhart’s practice at community health centers on the West and South sides of Chicago allowed her the opportunity to serve people who struggle to access healthcare, which was a familiar experience from childhood, and a driving force behind her commitment to medicine. Her academic position at Rush University Medical Group allowed her to blend her commitment to serve, with her love and skill as a teacher and mentor for physicians in training. While there, she also served as the pediatric department’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee chair, and was recipient of the 20-21 Excellence in Humanism Award and voted the 20-21 Outstanding Medical Student Educator.

Dr. Lockhart anticipated retiring as a clinician. After nearly 10 years in practice, the limitations to affect impactful changes around inclusion and health inequities were undeniable. In order to contribute more meaningfully, she stepped away from clinical medicine. Common values and a shared vision led her to become a Certified Professional Coach and to her current position as Director of Justice Equity Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) with Lodestar Consulting and Executive Coaching and also a senior coach and facilitates her teams internal growth and development around the intersection of trauma and oppression and JEDI. She helps facilitate trauma informed and trauma responsive leadership trainings in organizations including but not exclusively healthcare. She spends some of my time doing keynotes or presenting at conferences about this topic as well.

And lastly, she coaches clients around topics for which they would like support with a trauma informed/trauma responsive lens.

Lastly, Dr. Lockhart is a board-certified pediatrician and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and holds a Leading

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion certification through Northwestern University

She is a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the National Medical Association, American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), and the Illinois Chapter of the AAP. And when time allows, she enjoys traveling, live music, and reading fiction and non-fiction.

Unpopular opinion: You need to be choosy about how you spend you time and money once you become a doctor. Graduation doesn't man you've made it. And trying to be everything for everyone will leave you broke.

We tell ourselves that negotiation is

  • a skill that we aren't good at

  • something that should have been included in our curriculum but wasn't

  • risk, hard, uncomfortable

We categorize negotiation as a hard conversation. But is any of this true? I mean sure it probably wasn't on the syllabus. But is it true you dont know how to negotiate? Is it true that the other person doesn't want to give you what you're asking for? Do you gear up for an argument when you think about negotiating?

Listen here, we negotiate every day. In fact, I think we are naturally masters of it.

Don't believe me?

In this episode, Dr. Tammi keeps it 💯 in her story which includes being a Black female doctor, a mom, an entrepreneur who burned out, survived post partum and is dancing her way to wellness, while leaving behind idealistic and unrealistic notions of motherhood and self care.

No one else can determine what you should feel. Yes, you can feel guilty about “making it” and not wanting to be there.

Happy New Year! This is the start of season 2!

This season is all about storytelling.

How do doctors carve out a safe, fulfilling place for ourselves when we are feeling powerless?

In this first episode of the season, I share two pivotal times in my career that shaped my trajectory; one in residency and one in fellowship. Both of them involved saying no to good but wrong opportunities. When I think of being a resident or a fellow, I dont think of a time of empowerment and YET I was out here making HUGE decisions for myself.

I hope my story resonates with you. You are never powerless. Do whatever it takes to learn how to advocate for yourself.

Also, I talk about what to expect this season. It's about to be SOOOO good. I'm already excited for you to hear what we have recorded!

View Details

At the end of a year, a season, a quarter, we have moments of reflection where we are deciding whether we are successful or not.. How do you decide when something is a failure? How do you decide when to quit or pivot?

In this episode we discuss what is a failure, when/ how to decide to quit. We discuss shame, regret, and disappointment. Also what do you do when you're not sure.

As always, let me know your thoughts!! I'm glad to be a part of your personal development journey.

Thank you so much for listening, and for your feedback.

If you feel like you don’t fit, it’s not because you’re an imposter. It’s because you’re on a system that doesn’t reflect you. The fact that you’re thriving is because you’re impressive.

You are NOT under qualified. You do NOT need more experience or more training.

The feelings are because the external measures we use to gauge our success isn't our own.

It's time we challenge the cues we are receiving and turn it around. Let's reclaim our glory, our success!

Defining why it's not you (burnout), it's them (moral injury). And also encouraging you to change your mind about why you aren't the imposter.

This episode contains 3 ways to start to unlearning what harms you:

  • tackling self talk

  • changing your habits

  • purging your environment

Thanks as always for listening.

Welcome to episode 3. In the last two episodes I shared how I came to develop the Blk Doctor. How much of a struggle I was in while in training and the subsequent struggle in convincing myself to take a break.

I pose 2 challenges in this episode:

  1. Jobs aren't as secure as we believe

  2. Throw out job metrics and create your own.

Hope you enjoy.

Please remember to rate 5/5 stars and write a review! Thanks in advance.

So after all that talk in episode one about my dissatisfaction I thought I should give you a resolution on what I ended up doing. I decided, when I graduated fellowship that July, I was going to take a short break.

Y’all … the stress I felt not having an answer to what I was doing next, because you know that’s the next question, as soon as you do one thing, somebody request the next thing. There is no room for standing still. Like if you’re not moving or growing you’re stagnant. there’s no rest for the weary.

I had no idea how much I internalized the grind until I decided I really desperately needed to take a break, and I didn’t even know how to justify even to myself. Sis was having a whole internal struggle by herself.

Me. I am sis.

At the end of fellowship, they gave us an assignment to write a personal narrative. A narrative usually explains an issue, how it relates to your story and should inspire others to take an action. And I wrote my narrative about taking a break.

In episode 2 I share the personal narrative that I wrote at that time. Notice how I still had to qualify my rest and what I would be doing.. how id still be contributory and productive.

Enjoy

Start of transcript:

As I mentioned in the intro, my name is Sheneka, Dr Horne to some.

I’m a pediatrician. I have a degree in public health. I did a fellowship in global health. I’m the founder/ creator of The Blk Doctor.

Tell me why I didn’t know what it was going to be like to be an attending?

I’m an early career physician and I burned out. This could’ve happened in med school, definitely residency, sprinkling a little bit more in fellowship.

I really had to take time and exam and why. I also wanted to help others who feel the way I feel about the medical system. So being an attending did not stop my dissatisfaction with medicine.

I thought when I graduated fellowship, the tasks that took me away from the part of my career that I loved would end, right? I would get to make all the firm decisions on how many hours I was working. Definitely no nights and weekends. I would stand up to the disrespect from some of these other staff.

I would have more. More money for sure. More time, more autonomy, more influence. But the thing about starting from a place of burn out and already not being excited, when you end up in a job where you are trying to please everyone else you’re definitely not gonna be satisfied.

I felt like I needed to write notes so that risk management, legal, billing, (who are all these people), who all have different needs, and I wanted to write note so that they were happy. I needed to write notes during an appointment so I’m saving time but not during the appointment, so that the patient gets the eye contact that they interpret as feeling heard and understood. I needed to write prescriptions as soon as the patient walks out the door so when they go straight to the pharmacy they’re not waiting too long. But I needed to be quick about all of it that the next patient isn’t waiting too long, so that the nurses and the techs don’t think I’m slow and therefore incompetent. Because we have this fear in medicine that someone’s gonna think that we’re stupid, despite the fact that we’ve gotten as far as we have, which is evidence to the contrary.

I needed to write notes, quality notes, so that the next doctor who sees the patient has a good idea of what’s going on. But they can’t be too long cause ain’t nobody trying to read your long notes and they’ll think that you have no idea what pertinent positive is.

The thing is as an attending, I got more… more tasks, more responsibility and more dissatisfied.

When you’re that busy, you literally have no time to look up. Life just keeps life-ing and you’re stuck in this wheel with no time to analyze how to make any kind of grand change that would bring the kind of ease and free time and overall satisfaction that you want.

I just became this workhorse. I wanted to be a thought leader, changemaker. But I was just so busy and so tired.

And with all of this, you have this guilt. Guilt about not being home with your family, missing important events. When you are home, you're too tired. You’re guilty about not staying later work because you have bad feelings about your unfinished billing and your unfinished notes.

There’s so many ways that medicine can be better in order to positively affect our lives.

The only way to get to that change is to change our mindsets. Our mindsets have to shift. We cannot continue to willingly be the cog in the wheel, the perfect employee.

This podcast aims to tackle the mindset shifts that doctors need to make in order to assess their environment, to make solid changes, to collectively shift.

The reason the podcast is titled collective is because there’s really nothing that we cannot accomplish as a community. We need community.

When you hear other doctors talk; sometimes this baseline isolation in medicine is described. Where we’re in the spaces where no one looks like us and we’re alone in the room.
