Tune in on Wednesday, October, 9th at 1:20 PM EST for our Firehouse Session with Hiss Golden Messenger ahead of the special solo set at The Buskirk Chumley Theater performing the 2010 record “Bad Debt” in its entirety, along with other favorites. Tickets on sale now.
In 2010, M.C. Taylor—leader, songwriter and singer of Hiss GoldenMessenger—sat down at his kitchen table and started writing and recording the songs that would eventually become his beloved album Bad Debt. At the time, the songwriter was living in a drafty cedar cabin in the woods outside of Pittsboro, North Carolina with his wife and three-month old son Elijah, having recently moved across the country from California. Taylor was, for all intents and purposes, out of the music game.
While his child slept, Taylor wrote and sang his finished compositions into a cassette tape recorder, voice and guitar in the same intimate moment. As songs began to coalesce—intimate meditations on labor and joy and love and the heartbreaking, confounding fullness of life—Taylor shared them with his closest friends, feeling as though he had found something special. He had 200 copies of the album pressed on vinyl, created the artwork himself, and sold them out of the trunk of his car. When those copies sold, he pressed and sold another 200. These early, hand-wrought versions have become sought-after relics.
Bad Debt was the name Taylor gave to the deep and vulnerable collection of songs he wrote at his kitchen table; it went on to be profiled in the New Yorker, the Washington Post, Rolling Stone, Uncut Magazine, and many other publications, paving the way for Hiss Golden Messenger’s critically acclaimed, Grammy-nominated career.
In the fall of 2024, Taylor will play a series of solo shows during which he will perform Bad Debt in its entirety, in addition to songs from the rest of his celebrated catalog. Keep your ear to the ground.
Hannah Frances (b. 1997) is a vocalist, guitarist, composer, and poet that NPR’s Ann Powers calls “a stunning vocalist and songwriter, making monumental and mythic freak folk,” and was awarded Pitchfork’s Best New Music for her triumphant new album Keeper of the Shepherd. Through cutting lyricism and astute fingerpicked polyrhythms, Frances’ perennial sound melds avant-folk, progressive rock, and jazz. There is no singular way Frances grips us with her guitar or her storytelling. Drawing comparisons to Joni Mitchell and Jeff Buckley, her voice is colossal in its strength: piercing, warm, and always poised to embrace, even in its quietest expression. Whether performing as a solo act or with her full seven-piece ensemble, her mythology spellbinds with an insistent gravity.
All proceeds will benefit Amethyst House. Amethyst House is a Bloomington, IN based not-for-profit substance use disorder treatment program that has been in the Bloomington community since 1980. Amethyst is a United Way agency that provides residential and outpatient services for those recovering from addiction. Amethyst House provides a foundation for recovery by partnering with individuals, families, and communities impacted by substance-use disorders, offering high-quality residential and outpatient treatment services.

Released on May 24th, 2024 via Psychic Hotline and recorded in North Carolina at a studio started by Sylvan Esso members Amelia Meath and Nick Sanborn. Spacious, full-bodied folk songs, they are an ode to things that are good no matter how small; they sometimes feel like the ghost of a Mary Oliver poem. Bloomsday’s new record, ‘Heart of the Artichoke’, is a relic of unfettered creativity and community. They recount the miracles of the mundane, the memories that become sacred, an ode to all that is holy: nightswimming, songs plucked from the ether, the ways friendship can endure.

Good Looks write kindhearted and cathartic rock songs about the persistence required to make it through hard times. In April 2022, the Austin, Texas quartet released their critically acclaimed debut Bummer Year, which channeled post-2016 frustrations into lyrically generous and biting tracks. Immediately after their triumphant hometown record release show, tragedy struck. Walking outside the venue, lead guitarist Jake Ames was hit by a car crossing the street, fracturing his skull and tailbone. Following a necessary period of healing and processing which found him in the ICU and dealing with short-term memory issues, Ames recovered. The traumatic accident strengthened their bond, which is evident on their electric new album Lived Here For A While, currently in rotation at WFHB. Out June 7 via Keeled Scales, it’s fearlessly direct music that captures the full-throated intensity of their galvanizing live show.

Cutting their teeth on mics literally and metaphorically across the US for the past decade, Jones’s free-wheeling, do-it-yourself lifestyle is the stuff of modern folklore. With few prospects when the Florida-raised couple first moved to Nashville in 2017, they made rent by stacking beers at the local Piggly Wiggly.
Catchy, yet raw and arrestingly sincere, it’s no wonder Jones’s cult following has been steadily growing since the release of their seminal record Stories Up High (2022) produced by Andrjia Tokic (Alabama Shakes, Langhorne Slim) of the famed Bomb Shelter in East Nashville. Though the record wrestles with themes of depression and the meaning of life, the vibes are more bittersweet than sad.

On Monday, April 15th, 2024 country music star, Mason Ramsey joined us in our studio for a Firehouse Session with host, Abby Noroozi. They chatted about how his life changed after someone posted a video of him yodeling in Walmart when he was 11 years old and what it’s like to have millions of followers on social media. Mason shared about his very first public performance at Tootsies in Nashville at 3 years old and what it was like playing The Grand Ole Opry with his grandparents in the audience. He gave us an incredible stripped down performance of Blue Over You, his brand new single Something You Can Hold, and the upbeat How Do I Know If I’m In Love and promised to come back to WFHB if he’s in Bloomington again! It was a very special session.

Geese is composed of vocalist Cameron Winter, guitarist Gus Green, guitarist Foster Hudson, bassist Dom DiGesu, and drummer Max Bassin. Their new album 3D Country is the sound of a restless, adventurous band redefining themselves. While writing 3D Country, Winter was preoccupied with “modern doom,” the way climate change and all manner of looming catastrophes hang on the horizon while we otherwise go about our lives.

Equal parts classic songwriter and modern-day storyteller, Gabe Lee has built his own bridge between country, folk and rock. Storytelling has been an anchor of Lee’s music since the very beginning. Raised by Taiwanese parents in Nashville, TN, he left home during his teenage years and headed to Indiana, where he obtained college degrees in literature and journalism. Lee launched his career as a genre-bending musician after returning to Tennessee, quickly progressing from dive bar gigs to high-profile opening slots (including shows with Jason Isbell, Los Lobos, and other artists who, like him, blurred the lines between roots-rock, country, and other forms of American folk music) to his own headlining shows. Throughout it all, he drew upon the narrative skills he’d sharpened as a student. If albums like Honky-Tonk Hell and The Hometown Kid often unfolded like autobiographical entries from his road journal, then Drink the River shows an even broader range of his storytelling abilities. Lee isn’t just writing songs about himself; he’s writing songs about all of us. And maybe, in doing so, he can bring us a little closer together.

He talked about the mejoranera, a small Peruvian guitar-shaped instrument made out of one piece of wood and nylon strings, that he was playing and talking on tour. He also spoke about the band’s outreach with kids via Lotus Blossoms. The biggest surprise was the Tears for Fears cover on the mejoranera! It was an incredible interview and performance.
