On episode 4, we speak with Dr. Neftalie Williams, a sociologist and USC Provost’s Post-Doctoral Scholar at the Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism, and Yale Schwarzman Center Visiting Fellow in Race, Culture & Community. He investigates global issues of race, diversity, identity, and youth empowerment, using the lens of action sports culture. Williams holds a Ph.D. from the University of Waikato and has upcoming books with Artisan Books and UC Press focused on skateboarding culture. He is also the first ‘Ambassador of Skateboarding,’ and envoy for the US Department of State, he introduced the concept of skateboarding as a tool for cultural diplomacy in both theory and practice. On our second episode, we speak with NGO Concrete Jungle Foundation (CJF), an international non-profit organization that uses skateboarding as a tool to stimulate positive personal and community development for underprivileged youth around the world. They coordinate the construction of new skateparks, the provision of skateboarding and safety equipment, and the organization and implementation of locally run programs focused on life-skills and empowerment.
