This episode of the Workin' on the Weekends Podcast is all about dealing with difficult people at work. We break down some common archetypes of people we can't stand working with, and how you can navigate those relationships best.

The Types Of People We Find Hard To Work With/For

Aka The Corporate Archetypes We Hate

  1. The bottleneck - the people that you are always waiting on to get something done. You constantly find yourself “circling back” with them to check on the status of XYZ and you can never get your job done until you hear back from them.
  2. The micromanager - the people that always have an edit, always want to change something that you worked on.
  3. And we’re not talking about general feedback, we’re talking about a social media caption with 10 changes and unnecessary feedback that in turn, becomes a bottleneck

  4. The “too busy for you” - it sucks to have a manager that doesn’t have time for you to support you or get you what you need to be successful in your role

How To Deal With Difficult People In The Workplace

GENERAL:

  • Have a work bestie to vent to!
  • Side note: don’t make venting about people your entire friendship though

  • Document interactions with difficult people so you have proof to refer to if you ever need it

  • Loop in your manager so they’re aware of the situation

SPECIFIC:

How to deal with the bottleneck:

  • When following up with these types of people, be extremely specific in the timing you need them to get back to you by.
  • Start the conversations earlier than your standard processes. For example, if you’d normally give a work week to review content, try a week or a week and a half.

How to deal with the micromanager:

  • Have a conversation, like:
  • Can you teach/show me exactly what you’re looking for in something like this so next time I can do it more in the way it seems you’re looking?
  • Is there an area where I am missing the mark in your eyes that is making you need to give me this much feedback?

  • Take into consideration the past feedback you’ve received from your client and implement moving forward to cut down on the back and forth.

How to deal with the “too busy for you”

  • Set recurring meetings with agendas so you can batch your questions and make sure you’re being heard and being provided support when you need it.
  • Ask any questions you can upfront when work is delegated to you, in case this is the last time you can get in touch with your manager for a while.

Want your brand to excel on social media? Peyton and Eileen from the Workin' on the Weekends podcast put together this list to help you feel more confident and prepared.

TIPS FROM SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGERS TO BRANDS

  • Determine your target audience and cater your types of content to them
  • Be consistent! Sporadic posting is not the move
  • Don’t overthink everything. If you have an idea, go for it! If something doesn’t work, don’t sweat it. Social media is a learning game
  • Engage, engage, engage. Algorithms promote content that is “well-liked” (liked, shared with a friend, saved for later, etc.) the best way to amplify this concept is to stay involved in the community
  • You don’t have to be everywhere, start showing up where the majority of your audience is, and go from there.
  • Make sure your content is “social first”, don’t reshare huge Youtube thumbnails or horizontally shot video content on Instagram
  • Be human and approachable and not too salesy, helpful over salesy
  • Use a social scheduling software that can give you reports and data to help you do your job better and smarter
  • Identify your content pillars and utilize that as inspiration for all your posts.

THIS IS WHAT TO BRING TO THE CONVERSATION ABOUT ASKING FOR A RAISE:

  • Approach the conversation with your “progress report”, (for example working in social you can refer to the business goals/objectives/what you’ve been tasked with and show the data behind what you’ve done) - Your manager is looking to determine the ROI on the work you’re doing

  • Be respectful, polite, and patient in the convo. Try not to be super nervous and emotional

IF YOU FEEL LIKE YOU DESERVE MORE MONEY, USE THESE TIPS AS EVIDENCE:

  • Do some research on average salaries, you can use Indeed’s salary calculator or Glassdoor to determine your worth!

  • Ask people in your field, or coworkers what they’re making (we love income transparency).

  • Blame it on the economy and inflation and say that is a reason to raise your rates!

  • You could see what other companies are offering for similar positions, and respectfully share to your current company that you'll be applying to those if they don’t give you a raise.

IF THEY CAN’T GIVE YOU MORE MONEY FOR WHAT YOU’RE CURRENTLY DOING BUT YOU STILL WANT TO MAKE MORE MONEY, HERE’S HOW:

  • Offer to do more! If you’re only doing organic social, maybe you offer to do paid. If you’re only doing Facebook/Instagram, mention the brand showing up on TikTok or another social outlet.

When you freelance or own your own business, you likely operate outside the typical 9-5. Join Peyton Robinson and Eileen Tauchman every other Monday as they spill the tea on being freelance marketers in the content and social world. Red flags: These are signs that something is NOT good. They can often signs of toxic or negative behavior and when you see these red flags in a potential client, RUN!

Green flags: These are positive signs you get from a client and traits that keep you working with them and enjoying your relationship with them.

Episode Resources:

Why it’s uncomfortable to say no and why people don’t like to say no

  • People don’t like to say no because they fear it will make them seem difficult to work with, disagreeable, or give them a bad rep in general.
  • People want to be liked
  • Especially in your career, saying no is nerve wracking because you want to avoid conflict or confrontation
  • As a freelancer, they can get rid of you at any time so you feel the need to people please.

Why it’s important to say no

  • Your time is important and you’re busy
  • You just have to!
  • Things tend to get out of control and chaotic when you don’t say no

Tips on learning how to say no

  • Start with saying no to a small request to give yourself courage
  • Be polite, don’t just be blunt and say no
  • Provide a solution/more reasonable timetable if that’s what your roadblock is
  • Compromise
  • Reframe your “no” to sound more positive
  • Give yourself time to respond, you don’t need to say no immediately
