What is blended wine? Blends are wines that do not carry a single varietal designation. Some of the finest wines in the world are actually wine blends. Bordeaux blends and Rhone blends are some of the most famous but here in California Opus One and Joseph Phelps in the Napa Valley have honed their skills creating phenomenal wine blends themselves. For example; Insignia. A blended wine is complex in which the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

A Sunday morning brainstorming session and breakfast are good when you enjoy diner-style food with a cup of coffee or a tall glass of orange juice. My co-host, Victoria, and I ate at Pappy's Diner in Santa Maria off the 101 freeway while creating content for this podcast. We both enjoyed omelets but chose two very different styles than the other. She had a Ranchero, and I ordered a California-style Omelet. She also ordered Rye bread while I ordered an English Muffin. Both meals are considered healthy but hers was healthier than mine. Listen along as we discuss diners across the USA and the Central Coast of California.

A trip to wine country in January means one thing, no lines, and a chance for excellent service due to dry January followers. In this case, I am not a follower. Dry January means no alcohol, to dry out from partaking too much during the holidays. I don't agree with the concept as it is detrimental to the wine industry in which I love and have been part of for years. It's a stress and burden on the economy in wine country.

This last weekend during a short drive to Ballard Canyon we spent an afternoon tasting well balanced, well made Estate wines, blends and sparkling from Santa Catalina Island and Rusack Vineyards. They make a stellar line up of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah from their Estate nestled along the hills in Ballard Canyon.

An afternoon baking cookies is a pure joy. With the addition of children, it becomes an immense joy.

I spent an afternoon with Michelle as she baked cookies with her friends' children as their pretend grandma and pretend grandchildren. As they, the children, measured ingredients and counted out chocolate chips, Michelle lovingly taught the children math and English in her baking routine. By the end of the day, the children sat around the dinner table, dunked their cookies into milk, and talked about how good they were and wanted to go for round 2 with oatmeal raisin cookies.

Michelle Snyder Curtin, Property Management & Public Accounting. As a young child in Santa Barbara, CA, Michelle had the opportunity to learn cooking basics from the Queen of the Kitchen, Julia Childs. Michelle learned to cook to feed people and that is how you show your love among other things.

Property Management and Public Accounting are Michelle's career fields along with cooking and baking as her passions.

A day on the farm is a day well spent. Attending Santa Barbara County's Farm Day in the Santa Maria Valley is full of fun interactive activities for the community to engage their senses.

Join a tour by a tractor ride with a trailer full of hay, hop on a tractor and pretend to drive the rows of a crop, or take a bite of a crisp raw vegetable hand-picked that morning to taste its freshness.

No matter where you go, you learn a little bit about where our food comes from. Regenerative farming is a holistic approach to managing the grasslands for cattle grazing. Farmers today are changing their methods and returning to ancient techniques to imitate the pattern of old migrating herds.

Meet two exceptional winemakers from Santa Barbara County, Chuck and Ricki. Between the two of them they make everything from Chardonnay to Petite Sirah. This year's harvest will prove to be fruitful but not without consequence due to the amount of rain we experienced this year. The benefits from all the rain will be more prominent with next year's harvest. From watching the wave sets to timing the fog burn off, wine making begins in the spring in the vineyard and is governed by Mother Nature herself. Listen along as we explore making wine with this year crop.

Chuck Carlson's winemaking career spans more than 34 years, specializing in limited-edition wines including Pinot Noir from Santa Rita Hills along with Cabernet Franc and several aromatic white wines in Santa Ynez Valley.

Ricki Hill, a New Zealand native commenced his winemaking career whilst working full-time in the 1980's. Passion for classic, world-class wines drives Ricki's goal to craft amazing wines every vintage. His wines are balanced, elegant and drink well by themselves and as part of a meal.

Happy Birthday to my dad, Bill Bogue.  Today is your day.

Qu ' ils mangent de la brioche, French saying, "Let them eat cake!" Coined by Jean Jacques Rousseau in 1765.

Birthday cakes date back to the 15th century and evolved in the 17th century to what we know them for today. Single layers are now doubled and more butter and sugar is used in the recipe to make the layers lighter, fluffier and sweet to taste.

The title accurately describes an evening of oysters and some more oysters among friends and family. For the love of food in general and spending time with friends and family Dr. Ray Arensdorf and his wife Courtney created this fun event as a fundraiser for local charities in the Santa Maria Valley. And I, being a foodie myself, was invited to attend.

Our evening was spent around the island in an outdoor patio bbq room surrounded by coolers of raw oysters and many friends. Ray and Courtney created oyster masterpieces for the guests to sip, savor and indulge their senses. We ate them as fast as they were prepared and anxiously awaited more. The evening was unique and felt like it flew by, although we had been there for multiple hours. Little did we know the planning and care for the event began when they left their house in the morning to pick up supplies for the day that took them to the Morro Bay Embarcadero and a walk on the beach.

Dr. Ray was born in California and raised in the Santa Maria Valley. He received a Bachelor's Degree from UC Santa Barbara and his Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College of Chiropractic West. In his personal time he participates as an Oyster and Sushi Chef for family gatherings as well as fundraising charity events.
