What does it take for a first-generation lawyer from a small town to build a distinguished practice before the Supreme Court of India?

In this episode of The Daily Lawyer Podcast, Jenna Krishnan speaks with Anupam Lal Das, Senior Advocate, about his journey from Hazaribagh to the country’s highest court, and the hard work, preparation and professional discipline that shaped his career.

An “accidental lawyer” with no family background in the profession, Anupam Lal Das began his career handling trial-court matters before moving to Supreme Court practice, qualifying as an Advocate-on-Record and eventually being designated as a Senior Advocate.

In this candid conversation, he discusses:

• Breaking into the Supreme Court Bar as a first-generation lawyer
• Why performance, not pedigree, ultimately determines recognition
• What the Advocate-on-Record examination involves and why it matters
• The importance of reading every brief from cover to cover
• How to prepare for the most difficult question a judge may ask
• His work on one of India’s earliest cybercrime matters under the Information Technology Act
• The opportunities and risks presented by artificial intelligence in law
• Why AI may assist lawyers and judges but cannot replace human judgment
• The challenges facing arbitration and insolvency practice in India
• How virtual hearings have improved transparency and accountability
• The importance of being fair to the Court and truthful with clients
• Practical advice for young lawyers building an independent practice

His message to aspiring lawyers is direct: breaking the glass ceiling may be difficult, particularly for first-generation professionals, but once the opportunity arrives, you must be prepared to perform - every single day.

And his enduring advice for courtroom lawyers?

“Know your judge, know your judge, and know your judge.”

The Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act is now in force and most business owners still assume it's "only for the big companies." It isn't. If your organisation touches personal data in any form, this conversation is for you.

In this special episode in collaboration with Zoho Contracts, we sit down with Priyanka Sharma, Head of Technology Laws at the Aditya Birla Group (and a Data Protection Officer), to break the DPDP Act down to its nuts and bolts i.e. what it is, who it applies to, and the practical steps every founder, professional, and in-house team needs to take.

Drawing on her experience implementing GDPR for US clients before returning to India, Priyanka explains why the DPDP Act is best understood as a trust law, not a data law — and why that single shift in mindset changes how you build your entire privacy programme.

What we cover:

  1. Why DPDP applies to every organisation, not just large enterprises

  2. "Personal data," "data fiduciary," and "data principal" are explained simply (including the toy analogy that even a 5-year-old understood)

  3. Why a privacy policy alone is NOT a privacy programme

  4. The myth of "throwing technology at the problem"

  5. How vendor and processor relationships create real liability — and where contracts become your safeguard

  6. Practical HR examples: talent acquisition, payroll partners, and onboarding

  7. Why consent is not a one-time exercise — and the right to withdraw it

  8. AI, nudges, and the next wave of data privacy questions

The big takeaway: DPDP compliance isn't a licence you obtain once. It's an ongoing discipline that becomes part of your culture and, done well, a genuine competitive advantage.

Our guest: Priyanka Sharma is the Head of Technology Laws, Aditya Birla Group. She's a Data Protection Officer, and a member of several industry and government-facing councils on data privacy, AI governance, and cyber security law.

Vivek’s journey is a masterclass in career agility, global leadership, and the "How" of hiring. 2. Global Leadership: Lessons from leading massive M&A deals in Brazil, Mexico, and Japan, and managing cross-cultural teams.

  3. The "How" of Hiring: Why Vivek gives 50% or more weightage to a candidate's attitude and ethics over their technical domain skills.

In this episode of The Daily Lawyer Podcast, we sit down with Ashok Kumar, Chief Legal Officer at UltraTech Cement, for a deeply insightful conversation on building a long-term in-house legal career, leading litigation strategy, and growing into a business-first legal leader. From being a small-town boy from Tamil Nadu and an “accidental lawyer” to leading legal functions at some of India’s biggest corporates, Ashok shares his remarkable professional journey across companies such as ABB, JSW, ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel, and UltraTech Cement.

In this episode, we discuss:* Ashok Kumar’s journey from Salem to the top of India’s corporate legal world * What it really takes to build a successful in-house legal career * Why in-house counsel must stay in the driver’s seat in litigation * How to choose the right external counsel and build trusted legal networks * The importance of business understanding for modern general counsel * Leadership, team-building, and hiring for attitude over skill * Legal tech, AI, and why law leaders must be thoughtful before adopting new tools * The qualities every great GC must possess * Advice for young lawyers looking to grow in-house

One of the biggest takeaways from this conversation:Litigation is not something an in-house lawyer simply hands over to a law firm. As Ashok explains, the strategy, objective, team selection, and business alignment must all be driven by in-house counsel.

This is an important and refreshing conversation for anyone who wants to understand how legal leaders think beyond law and operate as true business partners.

  • A single missed contract renewal can create criminal liability
  • CEOs now expect answers in minutes - not days
  • CLM has moved from “legal cost” to boardroom necessity
  • AI-powered contracting is essential - but human judgment still matters
  • MSMEs and startups need CLM even before scale

This episode is especially relevant for:
✔️ In-house legal teams
✔️ General Counsel & Legal Heads
✔️ CXOs, CFOs & Compliance Leaders
✔️ Founders, MSMEs & IPO-bound companies
✔️ Legal Ops & Risk Professionals

Key Topics Covered:

  • The evolution of legal from “no-go” to “co-pilot”
  • Why contract renewals are the most dangerous blind spot
  • How CLM prevents revenue leakage & compliance failures
  • Speed-to-market as a legal KPI
  • AI vs human review: what truly works
  • Why CLM is as essential as a mobile phone today

Our sincere thanks to Zoho Contracts for enabling this collaboration, and to Mr. Atul Juvle for sharing his time, experience, and perspective with our audience.

Part 2 of our historic Legacy Series conversation with Professor H.D. Pithawalla - one of India’s longest-serving, most respected, and most beloved law professors.

For 53 years, Prof. Pithawalla has shaped three generations of lawyers - Chief Justices, senior counsels, managing partners, policy advisors, and thousands of practitioners across India and beyond.

In this episode, he speaks with disarming clarity and rare honesty about:

  • Why students must stop studying “for exams”
  • How to think like a lawyer, not memorize like a student
  • The first moral temptation every young lawyer must resist
  • The crisis of punctuality and professionalism
  • The problem with adjournments and why litigants suffer
  • What he learnt from giants like Nani Palkhivala, Ashok Desai & Ram Jethmalani
  • Why knowledge, conscience and hard work are the real engines of a sustainable career
  • Drafting Bhutan’s Contract Act - the responsibility he almost declined
  • What legacy really means

This is more than an interview - it’s a bridge between generations.

The Legacy Series is created in collaboration with Solomon & Co., Advocates & Solicitors, one of India’s oldest law firms with 115+ years of heritage - united with us in preserving the wisdom of India’s greatest legal minds.

What if legal help in India could begin not with fear, but with awareness?

Earlier this month, while I was in my office, Susheel Bellara sent me a message on LinkedIn. Four hours later, he was sitting across from me. As we spoke about Haq Se and the quiet revolution he’s building, we decided, spontaneously, to hit record.

No preparation, no lights or makeup, no agenda. Just two people talking about a platform that could genuinely help both litigants and lawyers.

That is how this episode was born: raw, simple, and honest.

In this special episode of The Daily Lawyer Podcast, I sit down with Barrister Sushil Bellara, founder of Haq Se : a free, non-profit platform designed to make legal understanding accessible to everyone.

Through Haq Se, families and individuals can:

  • Estimate realistic maintenance amounts using a calculator based off Supreme court judgments on maintenance
  • Access mediation support under India’s new Mediation Act (Section 5)
  • Connect with trusted NGOs, pro bono lawyers, and counsellors
  • Safely record, and send to a trusted source in real-time, incidents of domestic violence (or other traumatic events) through a “Secret Diary” feature

Senior members of the judiciary, including former Supreme Court and High Court judges, have already recognised the potential of Haq Se to bridge awareness gaps across India.

Listen in to see how technology, empathy, and law can come together to create meaningful change.

In this unforgettable episode of The Legacy Series, we are deeply honoured to host Justice Mukul Mudgal, one of India’s most influential legal minds and reformers. A former Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court and retired judge of the Delhi High Court, Justice Mudgal’s contribution to Indian law spans far beyond the courtroom.

From shaping India’s prison reform jurisprudence to redefining sports law and governance globally, Justice Mudgal’s career is a remarkable testament to courage, conscience, and the quiet conviction to do what’s right.

In this wide-ranging, thoughtful conversation, he reflects on:

  • His landmark role in cases like Sunil Batra and Prem Shankar Shukla that changed how India treats its undertrials and convicts
  • The creation of the "rarest of the rare" doctrine in death penalty law through Bachan Singh
  • His fierce commitment to legal aid, pro bono work, and access to justice for the poorest
  • Declaring BCCI a public body, and his investigation of the 2013 IPL scandal
  • Chairing FIFA’s Governance Committee, and lessons from global sports administration
  • His bold take on arbitration reform, junior lawyers’ rights, and why judges must be humane
  • The role of fine arts in shaping empathy and judicial sensibility
  • His honest views on the life of a judge beyond the gavel: isolation, discipline, and public service

Justice Mudgal doesn’t just talk about the law - he embodies its purpose: to protect the vulnerable and uphold dignity. This episode is a masterclass in public service, legal ethics, and moral clarity, offering an extraordinary lens into Indian legal history.

Watch till the end for his life lessons, favourite books, productivity habits, and what he believes should be every lawyer’s true legacy.

Did you know?

Justice Mudgal also brings his unique sense of empathy and social responsibility beyond the courtroom.
He supported the Texas Hold ’Em Online Championship on 15th September 2019, with all profits donated to Romil Seva Sanstha, a charitable organisation he personally selected.

It’s one more example of how his commitment to justice extends well beyond the legal system and into everyday acts of giving.

This is yet another episode in our #thedailystories series. This series is fast becoming among our most popular series on the podcast! Which is why we are releasing more episodes on this series on a loop

Today’s guest is someone who has become very dear to me - a chartered accountant turned mindfulness practitioner, Ms. Sneha Arvind.

Sneha is the founder of Arvindaa - a venture that seeks to make mindfulness a person’s first habit. She is a mindfulness coach and works with people across the world and across age groups to build in them a habit of mindfulness, meditation and provide a safe space for them to express themselves. Sneha even works with children and I am particularly appreciative of this facet of her work, because it positively informs a child’s psyche and therefore, is so much more powerful.

Sneha faced a personal trauma, and speaks candidly about her struggles, not just at a personal level, but even externally, the difficulties she encountered while trying to get what she was entitled to; Sneha also freely shared everything that she learnt in and through this traumatic journey, so that others can learn a bit from her experience and hopefully, not go through something similar.

She also speaks about her learnings in her entrepreneurial journey with Arvindaa, and in her easy-going way, shares incidents which helped her learn the practical aspects of running a business.

I'm so excited to be launching something amazing today!

Today is yet another TDL x ILA episode and I am so honoured and grateful that I have an opportunity today, to introduce an absolutely fantastic initiative, powered by ILA, called Manage My Crisis.

Manage my Crisis is pioneered by four incredible people, who are all on today’s episode with me and will be speaking more about the initiative, how & why they got here.

Crisis. That’s a word that hits our lives every now and then. Some we can manage to handle on our own. But more often than not, there are more that we just don’t know what to do about. Nor do know whom to turn to for help and advice. That’s when we start to panic and we take the wrong decisions which further cause more stress and anxiety.

And it’s exactly to help us navigate such a situation, we have with us today probably India’s first organisation that is focussing on professionally managing your crisis.

Please welcome on the show today the amazing team of ManageMyCrisis.

We have with us:

Jamshed Mistry, advocate at the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court.

Unnati Jhaveri, a therapeutic counsellor and life coach with international experience.

Tapan Parekh, an Internet solutions expert and founder of Dot Solutions.

Tejas Mehta, a communications specialist, journalist and content creator.

While all of us 'want' plenty from our business, I encourage you to stop & think of your absolute 'no-no's when it comes to your business/ What would you absolutely not tolerate from your business?

Is it a loss of control? Losing your work-life balance? No cutting corners/ having anti-bribery initiatives? Having your legalities in place? Paying your dues - taxes, salaries, expenses, vendor payments - on time? Building an inclusive work culture? Encouraging pro bono work? Making your organization family first? Having open-door policies? Taking mental health seriously? A strict adherence to quality over everything else?

Whatever it is, having your non-negotiables in place is the FIRST step to set up any business.

Your non-negotiables will dictate -

  • What kind of corporate structure you can go for

  • What kind of policies you should have/ get drafted in your business

  • What questions you should be asking, and seeking clarity on

  • What kind of professionals would you need to help you through the business set up/ running of

  • How and when you should hire/ fire - and how to provide for those in your employment contracts

  • What you should provide for in your third-party contracts

In short, your non-negotiables create a boundary within which your creativity and your business can flourish, be nourished and protected. In business, the pressures, opinions and opportunities can be distracting, but these non-negotiables would help keep you focussed on your mission; help you make decisions that would be optimal for you, and help you provide clear and unambiguous instructions to your partners/vendors/other professionals whom you'd engage within the course of your journey;

Today is yet another episode in our ILA dialogues series. As the Daily Lawyer is part of the amazing International Legal Alliance (ILA) network, I am happy to take this opportunity to feature one ILA member, every month, under the ‘ILA Dialogues series”.

Our guest today is Ms. Rashna Jehani, a corporate lawyer and Associate Partner at ZMC Law - a full service law firm in Mumbai.

Along with getting her basic law degree (BLS LLB) from GLC Mumbai, she earned an LLM degree from Columbia Law School, New York City, in 2017. Rashna honed her expertise across various corporate law fields from banking and property documentation to private equity and debt transactions, through her stints at various large law firms.

What I love about her story is that after spending a significant time honing her practical legal experience, Rashna realised that an MBA degree would better help her understand the position of her clients and she then set out to pursue a global MBA program from the S P Jain Institute of Management, in 2020.

Rashna advises companies of all sizes, from start-ups to large conglomerates, on structuring, investments, private equity and various other documentation that ensure protection of their rights and interests. She also regularly posts regulatory and legislative updates on the ZMC law page on LinkedIn, to inform the general public about the changes in the law and what it would mean for businesses.

Rashna, through the firm, ZMC Law, is a member of the International Legal Alliance.

We’re kicking off a new series on the The Daily Lawyer Podcast - #thedailystories

I started the Daily Lawyer podcast to make the law more relatable, and give a realistic understanding of both the profession and the professionals. Towards this end, and to give a more holistic understanding of the practical applications of law or, the pitfalls of not having your risk assessed by professionals, I started the #thedailystories series - where I invite business owners, across industries, to speak about how focussing on documentation/seeking legal advice helped them make better and safer business decisions - which directly spoke to their business bottom lines.

Kicking off this series is Mr. Aditya Iyer, co-founder of NeoTrader, a pioneering software that offers ready-made trades with multiple exit points, enabling anyone to comfortably trade in the (Indian) stock markets. Aditya, an MBA and a CMT, was into equity research with a large financial services company, before he made the switch to entrepreneurship, and co-founded NeoTrader, along with his amazing co-founder, Mr. Raja Venkatraman, under the aegis of the ‘Father of technical analysis in India’ - Dr. C. K Narayan.

In this episode, Aditya speaks about the challenges he faced while running and growing an organization through Covid, the steps he took to protect his risk and why he believes that seeking professional help from lawyers is imperative at every stage of the business.

Today, we’re starting a new series on the podcast - #TDLxILADialogues

This series is in collaboration with the International Legal Alliance (ILA) - a network of independent legal practitioners, across more than 150 countries, working together on a best friend basis to provide effective solutions to clients and advocate on important issues with the judiciary.

I am so proud to announce that The Daily Lawyer is now part of the ILA Network :)

In this series, we will be having conversations on various aspects of the law, from law professionals within the ILA who practice in those areas. It was only right that we started this series with Mr, Jamshed Mistry, the founder of ILA and a counsel at the Bombay High Court. Most of you by now may have heard that the Supreme Court of India, is allowing live streaming of constitutional law cases. This is a big win and a positive step forward for the future. Jamshed along with Senior Advocate Indira Jaising ably argued this matter, and I was thrilled when he agreed to come on the podcast to share how this journey started, and what the implications of this would be.

Tune in to listen to this mini-episode and do tell us what you think.

You can find Jamshed on - https://www.linkedin.com/in/jamshed-mistry-061a769/

Today’s #careersinlaw series podcast is our longest podcast ever. I debated between releasing it in two parts, but after I heard the podcast again (And again!) There are people who leave you in awe with just how MUCH they have accomplish, and continue to accomplish, in one lifetime. Kabir is one such person for me.

The first time I met Kabir, was when I was a student at the investment arbitration class at Columbia Law School and Kabir was assisting my then professor, and he rattled off, without looking at any reference material statistics of ANY investment arbitration case that had ever been decided. My 'awe' began there, and hasn't stopped yet. Through this conversation, you'd probably see why.

Kabir has not one, but four international law degrees, he has walked the halls of some of the greatest law schools in the world, he is associated in an academic capacity with some of the greatest law schools in America, he is an Attorney with the large, full-service law firm, and amid all this, he finds the time to dedicate himself to campaigning for and making an impact in bringing in greater diversity in the international arbitration space... AND... doing yoga!! Phew! I'm exhausted just writing his bio!

Listen to this brilliant conversation, make notes and take away something meaningful from this.

I have a lot to say about wills and since #lawsimplified is a bite-sized legal information segment, I decided to break this up into sections. So this is the first episode in that mini-series.

In this episode, I speak about What are wills and Why one must make a will.

If you enjoyed this episode, it would mean the world to me if you could take some time off and write a review for the podcast up on Apple reviews (https://podcasts.apple.com/in/podcast/the-daily-lawyer-podcast/id1621919832)

In today’s #careersinlaw episode, we have Adv. Siddharth Ranka, a dual-qualified lawyer (qualified both in India and England), currently working in Dubai (!), to speak about maritime or shipping law.

Siddharth has a wonderfully focussed and rounded experience within the maritime law space - not just in India but also other major shipping hubs like Singapore and Dubai. He has worked both in a law firm set up and as an in-house counsel, thereby seeing both sides of the proverbial coin, when it comes to general legal practice.

Siddharth also speaks about getting qualified as a Solicitor (England& Wales), the process to do so and the utility of this degree. This completely honest conversation  is packed with useful tips and tricks and  I cannot be more thankful to Siddharth for being so generous with his time and sharing his learnings so selflessly on this platform.

In this age of everyday unicorns and occasional decacorns, being an entrepreneur is becoming an attractive dream. And I am all for this burgeoning trend.

We see a lot of literature on the latest business trends or start-up innovations, but we rarely see or hear practical tips that are needed in order to start your business.

I've put together 5 points that I think a potential entrepreneur needs to think about BEFORE he starts a business. I believe going through each of these points and having a clear understanding of where you stand relative to each, will be hugely beneficial in giving you a clear direction of the next steps you need to take in the business

I hope you enjoy this episode. IF you did, please share and subscribe to the podcast. It would mean a lot to me if you could leave me a review. Or leave a comment on our social media handles -

I am so excited to present this conversation to you all! This is a very different career path that one can pursue while being within the legal industry but not practising the law per se.

Tanisha Deshpande is a lawyer-turned-entrepreneur. Having spent a few years in corporate law practice, Tanisha realised that her skills and interests lay elsewhere. So, through her stints with Vahura, AZB & Partners and LinkedIn, Tanisha honed her skills in business development for law firms.

Thereafter, she co-founded the Grey Matter LLP, a full-service boutique firm providing law firm management to law firms to build and develop their business, marketing, culture, employee engagement and employer brands. She also enjoys processes and standardizing them to ensure parity.

Tanisha speaks to us about skills necessary to craft such a career.

In today's #careersinlaw series, Jenna speaks to Malavika Menon, a banking law expert, Partner and Lead of the banking law practice at Dhaval Vussonji & Co. Malavika sheds light on the banking law practice and what lawyers/law students can expect if they seek to pursue banking law.

Interestingly, Malavika also took some career breaks to prioritise her personal life at some points in her career journey. Malavika speaks about having the courage to forge your own path, not give in to the timelines and general narratives of society and be your own guiding light.

A super interesting and inspiring episode, I hope you all like it.
