We are three educated women who love horses and wine, not in that particular order. And we’ve got stuff to talk about, dammit!
Erica brings in her expertise in communications, journalism and marketing, and is the head wine wrangler. She’s responsible for picking the different wines we drink during each episode, mostly because she has an entire aisle named for her at Liquor Barn.
Kristen shares her knowledge of nutrition, marketing and social media, and the mastermind behind this crazy podcast idea (honestly, she was probably drunk when she thought of it).
Leandra - jack of all trades, and master of quite a few as well, she’s easily the most worldly of the three of us and will eventually lead us in a full episode all about Icelandic Ponies and Björk
Drink along with Erica and Kristen as they start the pod with a Spanish Cabernet Sav, Suertudo.
Tis the season - the season of Spring. For some horse enthusiasts, that means beautiful, lush green pastures, mares and foals frolicking and truly a picturesque Kentucky equestrian scene. For others, Spring means a spike in cortisol and paranoia, possibly medicinal alcohol consumption, by humans as the thought of turning their horses and ponies out on lush Spring grass. As lovely as it is to see, Spring grasses can present a serious risk for laminitis, a painful and debilitating condition that both Erica and Kristen have personal experience with. Take a listen to what we call Erica and Kristen's Six Ways to Conquer Laminitis Season.
No, it's never too early to talk about the Derby! Erica and Kristen decide to give their early predictions a go, for better or worse....and knowing them, it's probably for the worse. Plus, a breakdown of why you should never ask the internet to choose and vote for the name of a submarine (or snowplow or boat or any type of machinery owned by the government), as demonstrated in the most hilarious way on Saturday Night Live. Plus, allergies (this will make sense when you listen). All rolled up in the 14th episode of Wine and Whinny!
Just Kristen and Erica this week...and America's chosen groundhog, Punxsutawney Phil. We horsemen and women sit with bated breath for the announcement of an early Spring (YAY) or 6 more weeks of heated water buckets (BOO). How did it come so far for our sanity and seasonal depression to lie at the feet (paws?) of a groundhog? Listen and find out in this, the 13th episode of Wine and Whinny!
Let's start 2023 off with a full set! Leandra, Erica and Kristen discuss the struggles of making new years resolutions and the challenges of working in an industry that's also a lifestyle.
Erica and Kristen wrap up our 2022 Breeders Cup picks, and talk to special guest Brittany Carter, Manager of the Broodmare Division at Shadwell Farm and Maalathat expert! Enjoy!
After what seemed like 4-5 months for those of us that can't do math today (Kristen), the dynamic trio has returned from their brief hiatus! We drink and we know things...or at least attempt to know things about the horses in the Breeders' Cup Classic and Distaff races. Anyways, if you are looking for a quick way to potentially, maybe, but probably not win, you should definitely listen to this episode!
Erica, Kristen and Leandra welcome our first guest, Dr. Shannon Pratt Phillips from North Carolina State University, and discuss her research aimed to encourage healthy weight in horses and ponies. Recently, Shannon attended the International Conference of Equine Exercise Physiology in Uppsala, Sweden, where she presented her ground-breaking data on how judges favor adiposity in athletic show ponies. What does that mean, exactly? Listen and find out all about it!
It's the fun new game that all the cool kids are talking about. It's "Guess The Chronicle Forum Topic", a quiz show where Kristen attempts to get Leandra and Erica to guess the topic from a single random quote from the thread, and chaos ensues as expected. Plus, Kristen and Leandra invent a entire new line of hunt show clothing! Check it out!
The three amigos are back together and as spicy as ever. Tune in as Kristen, Erica and Leandra talk about the upcoming Belmont Stakes and introduce a new and highly enjoyable segment to the podcast!
Kristen and Erica make excuses as to our failure to handicap the Kentucky Derby and look to make more predictions for the Preakness.
In this episode, Erica, Leandra and Kristen take a look at the horses in the 2022 Kentucky Derby, and give handicapping a go on their own scale of cuteness, color and fun names!
On this episode, Leandra, Erica and Kristen talk all about responsibility when selling or rehoming a horse, and the importance of being able to set that horse and owner up for success.
Plus, a deep dive into some of our strange family traditions. Which may or may not have resulted in a broken TV or two!
Erica and Kristen fly solo this week and relive stories of their misadventures in this exclusive series of the TEAM EK Chronicles titled "Well, that didn't go as planned"!
March is Women’s History Month, and we are women, so Erica, Leandra and Kristen talk about being women in agriculture, a particularly heavily male dominated field. Women who have positively influenced our lives and careers and advice we would give to women looking towards a career in agriculture. Check it out!
Episode 1 of the Wine and Whinny Podcast - Credibility
Let’s talk credibility and what makes someone credible in their field of expertise, especially in the vast array of specialties that encompass the equine industry. Kristen, Erica and Leandra give it some thought.
