How do you teach home economics when most schools don't?For many families, home economics has become a forgotten subject. But cooking, sewing, meal planning, budgeting, gardening, and creating with your hands are the very skills that build confidence, resilience, and independence.

In this episode of The Homestead Education Podcast, Kody Hanner sits down with Jessica Clark of The Lark Life to discuss why practical life skills deserve a place alongside traditional academics—and how families can begin teaching them today.

Jessica shares how teaching her children to cook, sew, quilt, and create has transformed their confidence and given them ownership over their education. Together, they explore why children were designed to be creators rather than passive consumers, and how giving kids meaningful responsibilities helps them develop problem-solving skills that last a lifetime.

Whether you homeschool, attend public school, or simply want to raise more capable kids, this conversation offers practical encouragement for bringing home economics back into everyday family life.

In This Episode* Why home economics is making a comeback * Teaching cooking, sewing, quilting, and practical life skills * Helping children become creators instead of consumers * Building confidence through responsibility and hands-on learning * Why mistakes are one of the best teachers * Raising kids who contribute to the family instead of simply being entertained * Teaching boys and girls the same practical skills * Creating a home where learning happens naturally * Jessica's new Foundations in Quilting curriculum for homeschool families * What "Keep Growing" means and why lifelong learning matters

Key Takeaways* Home economics is about far more than cooking—it's about preparing children for adulthood. * Kids gain confidence when they're trusted with real responsibilities. * Creativity, problem-solving, and resilience are learned by doing, not by watching. * Families don't need expensive equipment or perfect conditions to begin teaching practical skills. * Some of the most meaningful education happens around the kitchen table, in the garden, or beside a sewing machine.

Sugaring isn’t just for the Northeast anymore. And the truth is — there are opportunities for food, resources, and self-sufficiency sitting right in our own backyards… if we’re willing to look a little closer.

In this episode of The Homestead Education Podcast, Kody Hanner sits down with David Knudson of Montana Maple Works to talk about the surprising world of tapping trees for syrup in the Western U.S. — and what it really takes to turn sap into something usable, valuable, and even profitable.

From understanding tree types and sap flow to the reality of how much work goes into a single gallon of syrup — this episode breaks down both the science and the practicality behind it all.

In this episode, I share an update on Ranger, our Great Pyrenees livestock guardian who is still missing, and how our family is moving forward while holding onto hope. I also talk about our plan to bring home a new working male dog, what we’re looking for in a ranch-ready name, and how we’re navigating the emotions of change while keeping the homestead running.

Then I dive into my annual New Year reflection, including my word-of-the-year approach (reemerge, redefine, and bringing it home), what’s shifting in our family and business, and why executive functioning matters for both kids and adults. I explain how homesteading naturally builds real-life skills through purpose, cause and effect, and responsibility, share details about my free Executive Functioning for Homestead Kids download, and give an update on our student planners—plus the launch of the new Junior Homestead Student Planner.

In this episode, I’m talking about working dogs—and what happens when one goes missing. After a brief life update, I share the story of our livestock guardian dog, Ranger, and the events leading up to his disappearance. From late-night disturbances to injuries on multiple dogs, this episode explores the reality of relying on a guardian dog to protect a farm and the emotional weight of not knowing what happened.

I also address common misconceptions about working dogs, especially livestock guardian breeds like Great Pyrenees—how they’re raised, why they live differently than house pets, and why pet standards don’t always apply to working roles. Drawing from my background with hunting, herding, and farm dogs, I explain the difference between livestock guardians and farm guardians and invite listeners to think critically about breed-specific needs, farm protection, and respectful support during hard seasons.

In this episode, Kody chats with Katie Olthoff, co-founder of Chop Local and Chop Local University, about helping farmers sell meat directly to consumers in today’s market. Katie shares how she transitioned from teaching elementary school in rural Iowa to building an online farmers' market that connects producers with buyers nationwide. Together, they unpack the difference between custom-exempt and retail meat sales, how inspection laws affect shipping, and why clear pricing and education are key to building trust with customers. Katie also shares insights on simplifying online sales, using email marketing instead of relying on social media, and creative strategies for selling the lesser-known cuts that often sit in farmers’ freezers.

In this episode, Kody tackles one of the most complex and often misunderstood topics in America: the food stamp system and its impact on personal responsibility, nutrition, and self-sufficiency. She traces its origins from FDR’s 1939 program to today’s SNAP, uncovering how a system designed to feed the hungry gradually created a culture of dependency. Drawing from her own experience as a single mother who once relied on food assistance, Kody offers a compassionate yet challenging perspective on how modern policies, education gaps, and processed food industries have eroded our connection to real food and the skills to provide it.

She reminds listeners that if those in power control the food, they control the people. Through history, statistics, and personal reflection, Kody urges families to reclaim their independence by learning to cook, grow, and nourish themselves. She calls for a return of home economics and small-scale agriculture to schools, stronger nutrition education, and support for farmers—the very people who sustain our nation. This thought-provoking conversation challenges the idea that aid alone can solve hunger and points toward a future where resilience, knowledge, and self-reliance take the lead.

If your homestead isn't compliant, you can find yourself in trouble. Alexia Kulwiec from Farm to Consumer Legal Defense Fund has helpful tips for you.

Farm-to-Consumer Legal Defense Fund (FTCLDF) protects the rights of farmers and consumers to engage in direct commerce through legal representation and policy work. Our members receive help drafting the agreements they need to provide food directly to consumers. We are there for farmers facing inspection and regulatory issues and may provide representation of members facing litigation if it fits our mission. We work to influence state and local policy to ease the regulatory burden placed on independent farmers.

There’s a reason homesteading and homeschooling often go hand-in-hand. We recognize the shortcomings in the system and want to create a better childhood and a better future for our kids—one where they are free to be creative, healthy, active, smart, resilient, and resourceful. But as simple as that kind of life sounds, it’s not always easy.

Today’s podcast guest gets it. Ginny Yurich is the genius behind the 1000 Hours Outside movement and the author of the upcoming book Until the Streetlights Come On! Ginny discovered the benefits of unstructured outside play when her children were small. She was surprised to find that most children spend 1200 hours every year on a screen, and she began experimenting with the idea of spending hours upon hours outside with her kids in response to that notion. Ginny talks about the technological advances and modern-day comforts that are actually harming our children’s health, and social, mental, emotional, and physical development.

If you have children in your life, check out the full episode to learn more about the 1000 Hours Outside movement and how you can raise happy, healthy, well-rounded kids in this tech-heavy culture.

Don’t forget to leave a review and let me know if you want to hear more episodes like this one!

Fall is here again, and I'm ready to pull out my starter and make ALL THE BREAD for soup season. But have you ever wondered what is up with sourdough? In the last few years, sourdough’s been blowing up the internet as people all across the world try their hand at baking tangy, complex, DIY loaves and recipes.

In today's episode, we'll tell you how the sourdough craze got its start and how you can jump on the bandwagon just in time for your next bowl of soup.

Today’s podcast guest Kristen Stinson is the owner of The Curated Farm and my new go-to gal for all things sourdough. Kristen started her business as a way to connect with her community after moving to a 10-acre farm in rural Eastern WA. What began as a business to sell farm-grown calendula products at local farmers markets, quickly morphed into teaching sourdough classes to hundreds of people. Kristen recently was a speaker for the Modern Homesteading Conference in Idaho where she shared her knowledge and encouraged others in their sourdough journey.

She loves helping people get back to their roots and learn a skill that they can share with their families and communities, whether they’re living on a 50-acre farm or in an apartment downtown.

If you’ve ever tried and failed to make great sourdough or you’d like to give it a first-time shot, Kristen’s tips can tricks will give you the confidence you need to start baking and keep your sourdough alive and well—even if you’re an infrequent baker.

It’s 2023, and public schools are in a downward spiral. For many parents, covid was the catalyst that woke up a deep-seated desire to take back responsibility for our children’s educational and emotional well-being. But is homeschooling really the answer to a broken system? Can we really meet all of our kids’ needs inside the four walls of our home?

Today’s podcast guest says, yes! A quality education might be more accessible than you think. Meet Mandy Davis, a former elementary school principal turned homemaker, homeschooler, and homesteader. Together we talk about our experiences with the public school system and its inability to serve kids that don’t fit the mold due to neurodiversity and learning styles. We touch on some hot topics like parental consent, informal education, child-led learning, and more!

If you’re considering homeschooling or want to know what it looks like when you take charge of your kids’ education, check out Mandy’s free resources on her website and tune in to today’s episode!

“When I sat down with my husband to figure out that plan, it was not a plan without sacrifice because we were going from two incomes to a single income. It was, ‘This is going to be worth it because it's the life we want to live, and I'm okay giving up these other things.’ I wanted to find that peace and joy in my own home.” - Mandy Davis, HomeBuilt Education

As homesteaders, we like to be prepared for anything - with a little grit and determination. But as modern homesteaders with an image to maintain, it’s still okay to embrace convenience! In today’s episode, Bonnie Jones of Grain Maker Grain Mills shows us how we can have the best of both: convenience through innovation and hard-earned self-sufficiency.

Bonnie and her husband were homeschool parents facing the Y2K scare of 1999 when they began their venture into grain milling as a home business and disaster preparation plan. The very first GrainMaker® mill was designed when they were raising their family, homeschooling their children and generally learning to become more self-sufficient-or "God-reliant." Today, they’ve perfected their heirloom quality hand-operated and motorized mill that boasts a rustic homestead aesthetic, durability, and versatility. They still own and operate their flourishing home business, GrainMaker Grain Mills, and share their love for baking bread with homesteaders and homeschoolers at conferences across the country.

“We may not ever be the largest grain mill manufacturer in the world, but we really wanted to have a good name and do our very best. We're constantly growing and changing because of all the things that people are finding out and teaching us.” - Bonnie Jones, Grain Maker

How can we teach our kids to understand how money works in real life before real consequences happen? Join us today as we talk with one of my favorite conference friends, Charla McKinley of Beyond Personal Finance!

Charla explains how she created a fun and interactive homeschool finance curriculum with the goal of training kids to make informed decisions about realistic careers that fund the housing and expenses that form the future lifestyle they envision.

Charla McKinley graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in Finance. She went on to become a Certified Public Accountant with over 25 years experience in both corporate and private sectors. While homeschooling her two children, Charla was inspired to write an interactive personal finance curriculum that opens the student's eyes to the high costs of being an adult. After retiring from homeschooling, Charla continues to teach teens in Raleigh, NC and across the country using her Beyond Personal Finance curriculum.

Charla’s passion is teaching teens that their choices matter. She is a firm believer that in order to prepare teens for the road ahead they must be given the opportunity to practice making good (and not so good) choices using real dollars before they get out into the world and have real regrets.

"You've got to raise the kid that you have. You've got to notice notice their problems and walk them through it, and you... don't necessarily save them from the trouble. Help them navigate through the trouble." - Charla McKinley

If you’ve ever gone shopping for vacant land, you know how difficult it can be to find out which amenities are available on the property. A reliable water source and electricity are essentials for new and experienced homesteaders. And realtors don’t always have the deets.

In this podcast episode, we talk to my local friends Steven and Jessalyn Willis from American Water Locators to discuss their journey from coffee roasting to water locating and their involvement in mission work in Guatemala.

They are a family of 5, and they've been running a water-locating business since 2016. They use seismo-electric equipment to locate the depth, yield, and thickness of an aquifer, helping to save you from a dry well and take the guesswork out of getting the most available water on your property. They explain how their top-of-the-line technology helps locate water underground using artificial seismic events and electrical signals. It’s the only one that actually images water and provides peace of mind for homesteaders in the market for vacant land.

Join us as we nerd out on water location and hear more about Steven and Jessalyn’s journey from a hand-to-mouth existence to becoming business owners and philanthropists. I can’t wait for you to hear their story!

See the links below to check out their coffee roasting company, Norse Roots Roasters, and American Water Locators for all your water location needs!

“If we're not growing, then we're just getting stagnant. I don't think we're on this Earth to be stagnant… I think we're here to enjoy it, but … with the little time we're given we should make the biggest impact that we can with as many people as we can and make as many relationships as possible.” - Steven Willis, American Water Locators

How does a small, family-owned dairy farm survive over a hundred years and continue to grow in today’s shaky economy and flawed agricultural system—while maintaining a self-sufficient mindset?

Join me as I talk to Derrick Josi of TDF Honest Farming or, as I originally knew him, the Tillamook Dairy Farmer! Derrick Josi is steadfast in his quest to share farming through the community he’s established online behind the handle TDF Honest Farming. Born into a lineage of dairy farmers in the Pacific Northwest, he farms the same land as his great-grandfather, Alfred, who came to the United States from Switzerland as an indentured servant in 1912. A lot has changed in the 105 years they've been dairying in Tillamook, and Derrick is opening up modern Dairy to the world on a daily basis.

In this episode, we talk about how farming practices are changing, the pros and cons of subsidies, state laws, restrictions, price floors, and school vouchers for homeschoolers and private schoolers.

And, are cows really causing global warming? Hear Derrick weigh in with a simple explanation of the Biogenic Carbon Cycle.

Derrick tells what it’s like to share the highs and lows of dairy farming with his 1 million+ Facebook followers and 100,000 Instagram followers plus a behind-the-scenes of life on the farm—the good, the bad, and the ugly—just for my listeners.

“Even at 40 years old, like myself, you need to be growing as a person, learning new things … I want to still be learning and doing things well into my retirement because I am a firm believer that if you're not learning and growing, you're going the other way.” - Derrick Josi

Would you give up city life and veganism to heal your chronic health issues? The modern homesteading movement has attracted suburban men and women with a thirst for knowledge, self-sufficiency, and holistic health, who are ready to reject modern societal norms in favor of freedom. We’re smack dab in the middle of a learning revolution, and I’m here for it!

Join us as we chat with HannahJo of Prairie Mountain Homestead about leaving a whole-foods plant-based diet and suburban life to be a traditional wife living a homestead life. HannahJo of PrairieMountainHomestead is the creator of #backtoprairieliving. She's also a member of God’s army, the patriot party, a learner, defender, whole food creator and self-reliant seeker. You’re going to love hearing her story as she shares her journey toward healing chronic health issues and embracing homeschooling, homesteading, and a symbiotic relationship with animals as food and food producers.

“The symbiotic relationship between husband and wife in a role that we love, and in our places that we love, I just love to talk that way because it invites a conversation in which, you know, putting on an apron is so controversial these days because we're oppressed. […] I just love that I wear my apron because I choose to.“ -HannahJo, Prairie Mountain Homestead
