No matter how you train, at some point you need to move an animal from the protected training area to the real world, whether that is on exhibit, in the show ring, or on the street. At that point, you need to consider your safety back up equipment (and skills!), and make sure that all are protected. This is crucial when you work with dangerous dogs (or other animals).

Some of the best animal people I know are happy to call themselves pet parents - they love their animals, they care for them, and their animals are family. But I think there is much more to this. I think that the nuance is important. Just as we can miss the moon if the rocket path is off by half a degree, in our desire to be the best partners to animals, I think we miss a really important point, when we designate ourselves in parent roles, rather than in collaborative roles. The Cost of repetition To a background of cicadas and crickets, we explore the effect of repetition during training. Repetition can be due to requests to repeat a step during training, or during presentations, or even when we ask a question but keep repeating it, as if the animal did not answer it.
Perception Modification is a suite of tools which lead animals to be able to self manage in the face of triggers, usually in 15 hours or less (per issue). The fact that these animals become self managing hugely boosts their success in life, regardless of the expertise of their owners, handlers or subsequent trainers.
Bridges, both the Terminal and the IB, and the 2- finger target are the first three things we teach, in SATS. This gives us the basis of our communication system, and takes less than one minute. What to teach next. Kayce recommends teaching the pole target and the station target next, along with their hierarchy. ' Hierarchy?' I hear you question. This very important stay takes just a minute or two to teach, and sets an important precedent that can safeguard your targets and your animals from that point forward.
When you bring your audience on as partners in your training, it can really help your training program and your institution, and it hugely enriches the experience of the audience and the animals. Kayce talks about some of the ways she has included the audience in training.

Sometimes we need to teach a single ‘rule of engagement’. We discuss such a case: the need for an animal to come when asked. This can be a life and death situation, as happened one year when Kayce needed to move her horse partner to evacuate for a hurricane at 2 am. Cooperation with this strange request was essential, but the horse did not want to suddenly wake up and get on a trailer. So Kayce made a point of teaching that she would follow up if she asked for ‘getting on a trailer’. A similar case came up with another horse who suddenly, after an injury and some extreme weather, chose not to come in when asked. Kayce and the horse's partner worked together to teach that coming when asked is not optional. They gently, but steadfastly persevered till the horse decided to cooperate. It is a matter of safety. But getting this point across does not need to be scary or stressful. Tune into what we did to change everything overnight. Then Kayce and Joseph explore a few other things. Thanks for tuning in!
