Tried a stool to record videos and a new camera angle; I kind of like it this way...

It took me a little while to warm up to this song. Perhaps it took me some time becoming 'jaded' before realizing this song contained some powerful lyrics. Whatever it was, I think this song sends a powerful message. It very obviously tells the story of a narrator who has fallen in love with a beautiful woman who is extremely toxic. And I want to emphasize that the narrator has fallen in love, because the disdain and resent he is expressing throughout the song could only possibly come from someone who has loved and hurt and loathed as the narrator describes.

It kind of sucks how it feels like the most beautiful women who have entered my short life have often felt like the most toxic women to associate with. And it's not that you don't care about this person... far from that. I mentioned before that these feelings can ONLY come from someone who has felt love. I think the narrator of the song is conflicted primarily because he cannot quite fathom what it is about this woman that makes him love her. Part of me imagines it is the beauty she possesses which he continually refers back to, but in a way that feels too artificial and simplistic to describe the wave of emotions that feel like love. For me it's in a lot of ways how inviting their love is, and how easy it feels to imagine this person as a piece of your life... in a lot of ways it IS the little things that make you feel like you are in love. All of that aside, he also is able to recognize the toxicity that comes along with loving her, which I think is one of the hardest things to recognize in a moment. Blinders are a real thing, but when the realization about a situation you are engulfed in becomes clear, it becomes a very sobering feeling. For a while it becomes tolerable to put up with the toxicity, but then the fog clears, or in my case, spring comes around... and you realize what has been going on the whole time and how unbearable a situation can feel.

The whole song in a way feels like the narrator is pleading with himself, and reminding himself of all of the reasons that he has put this distance between himself and his former lover. That internal struggle has become the lyrics for a song that describes how it feels to stare into the eyes of a woman who you will always love for some reason.

I really don't like the word 'bitch'. I think it's tasteless and extremely derogatory. While I don't always think it is tied this closely, in a way - it equates a woman with the likes of a dog, and something about that just feels incredibly wrong. With that being said, I cannot think of another word that would carry the same poetic justice and meaning that it plays in this song. And I think in a way, my disdain for the word itself, plays into one of the reasons the message feels even more powerful.

Regardless of my emotions and feelings about the song, I really enjoy the melody of the tune. A simple song, only 4 chords really, but it has in my opinion, the perfectly simplistic accents on the D and the Am chords. Let me know what you think of the singing and playing (be kind on the singing please, I'm trying) and if you too are a fan of Ween.

Baby Bitch - Ween

It's been a while since I've seen you smile

But now you've come back again

Came into the room and you saw my girl

And you asked her how long it's been

"A year" she said and you shook your head

Said "I'm surprised it's gone on that long"

Baby, baby, baby bitch

For words I am at a loss

Baby, baby, baby bitch

I'm better now, please fuck off

What else you gonna say when while you're back on your stay?

Maybe something, maybe nothing, we'll see

It's just too bad, you're beautiful, I guess

I wasn't for you and you weren't for me

Baby, baby, baby bitch

Please slip back into yourself

Baby, baby, baby bitch

Go conquer someone else

People say, "How beautiful, how sweet, how kind"

You're perfect, you've got nothing to hide

But I, for one, have seen the sun

And the bitch that you've locked up inside

Got fat, got angry, started hating myself

Wrote "Birthday Boy" for you, babe

Now I'm skinny and sick and paranoid

Without a cent to my name

Baby, baby, baby bitch

Fuck you, you stinkin' ass ho

Most beauty I've seen

You come from a dream

But I can't close my eyes anymore

No, I can't close my eyes anymore

No, I can't close my eyes anymore

there isn't a whole lot to be said about this one… well, i guess there is a lot that could be said, but not a lot that i’m looking to say. it is just a classic americana tune that i feel a lot of people will recognize. one of my favorite grateful dead songs, but also one of my favorite songs in general. for me, it evokes feelings of adventure, and a desire to live dangerously. making deals with the devil and leaving women in different cities, one that may have your child may not be the lifestyle for everyone, and to most it may not sound like fun, but something about it feels very romanticized in this song.

the perfect song to listen to as the weather starts to get warmer, with the windows down.... and make sure to turn it up loud :)

would love to see others join in on the fun of a friday cover song... i know this gives me something to look forward to, and all of this activity on the hive is encouraging me to learn new music as well as practice my singing more and more. as always, all feedback is encouraged, and do let me know your thoughts on the song.

friend of the devil - grateful dead

i lit out from reno

i was trailed by twenty hounds

didn't get to sleep that night

till the morning came around

set out runnin' but i take my time

a friend of the devil is a friend of mine

if i get home before daylight

i just might get some sleep tonight

ran into the devil, babe

he loaned me twenty bills

i spent the night in utah

in a cave up in the hills

set out runnin' but i take my time

a friend of the devil is a friend of mine

if i get home before daylight

i just might get some sleep tonight

i ran down to the levee

but the devil caught me there

he took my twenty dollar bill

and he vanished in the air

set out runnin' but i take my time

a friend of the devil is a friend of mine

if i get home before daylight

i just might get some sleep tonight

got two reasons why i cry away each lonely night

the first one's named sweet anne marie and she's my hearts delight

the second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail

and if he catches up with me, i'll spend my life in jail

got a wife in chino, babe

and one in cherokee

first one says she's got my child

but it don't look like me

set out runnin' but i take my time

a friend of the devil is a friend of mine

if i get home before daylight

i just might get some sleep tonight

got two reasons why i cry away each lonely night

the first one's named sweet anne marie and she's my hearts delight

the second one is prison, babe, the sheriff's on my trail

and if he catches up with me, i'll spend my life in jail

got a wife in chino, babe

and one in cherokee

first one says she's got my child

but it don't look like me

i set out runnin' but i take my time

a friend of the devil is a friend of mine

sometimes the best music, is the music that you find as an accident. i stumbled upon this song when i was listening to music and working around this time last year. i had just begun working from home along with a lot of others, and i found myself needing to find a rhythm to maintain sanity surrounded by 4 other roommates. for me, that rhythm was literally music, and being able to sit back (turn my camera off so as to not get in trouble with the boss) and listen and play music. this song came on a playlist one day, but it was the phish cover of this song.

after hearing it the first time, i played it immediately again. and then one more time for good measure. i was hooked. so i looked up the song to try and learn the chords and chop my way through it, and it occurred to me that the band ween actually was the original writer of the song. i had heard of the band before, and i think a friend of mine had played the album chocolate and cheese for me once before, but they were never a group that stuck with me. in fact the only thing i knew about the band was that dean ween runs deep sea fishing charters out of new jersey, and never places his guitar in front of his member.

after listening to this song for nearly a year, i gave the ween version a chance again. a little bit different than the phish version, but i think it captures the essence of the song a little bit better. skepticism and questioning is okay. doing weird shit is okay. and love is a weird, weird experience to comprehend. for the longest time i really believed that the song was about the cost of love, and how you should not listen to the florist when he tells you that the roses are free, because there is an implied cost to everything. the roses may be free today, but the love who you are getting them for has cost you something, either financially, mentally, or spiritually.

but really that interpretation of the song is largely based on the fact that you shouldn't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free. in fact, when i listen to the song now, i find that it’s less about the implied cost of love, and more so about how love can sometimes feel like it makes no sense. a lot of these lyrics literally feel like nonsense, which makes sense why phish would love the song enough to cover it… i like that band, but most of their songs have nonsensical lyrics.

and then it happened, a few short weeks ago. i was sitting in my home with a friend. a woman who i thought (think?) i was (am?) falling in love with, and as we were playing chess i wanted to fill the dead air in the room with some music. so i yelled over to my google assistant to play “roses are free” and it responded to me “playing roses are free by ween” and then proceeded to play the phish version (sometimes technology can get itself confused). and as it turns out, the woman who was sitting there, has this random 1994 album chocolate and cheese in her car, and this is one of her favorite songs.

so then the song took on a whole new meaning for me. not only does love sometimes not make any sense at all, but it really doesn’t have to make any sense at all. love is such an odd feeling, it doesn’t feel like anything in particular after all, we all love differently, and we all feel different things. but it also feels like everything in the moment. and in those specific moments, the ones where your heart slowly begins to melt, and you find yourself staring deep into the soul of someone else as you both sing along to an obscure b-side track that was introduced to you from different walks of life, you realize that everything that brought you to where you are right now is exactly what it needed to be. and that is really the truly fascinating power of music, but more importantly, of love, and it can’t really be explained, but if it could, i feel like this song is trying to do a good job of it.

so give it a listen. obviously my video won’t do the song as much justice as one of these two versions, but i’m having fun singing and playing, even if they are both terrible. and the biggest thing is i feel like i am getting better, and at the very least i surely am more comfortable doing the two things. as @steevc was saying last week, it’s not easy to sing and play at the same time, and the playing needs to get down to being somewhat automatic before the singing can really come in. i’m still flubbing as i go along, but if every artist waited for “perfection” before releasing their art, the world would be a boring place. as always, please provide feedback on anything you think might make my singing better, as i would love to spare any and all ears as i continue to post music to the hive. would love to hear from anyone really!!!

ween version

phish version

roses are free - ween

take a piece of tinsel and put it on the tree

cut a slab of melon and pretend that you still love me

carve out a pumpkin and rely on your destiny

get in your car and cruise the land of the brave and the free

but don't forget to understand exactly what you put on the tree

don't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free

take a wrinkled raisin, and do with it what you will

push it into third if you know you're gonna climb a hill

eat plenty of lasagna 'til you know that you've had your fill

resist all the urges that make you want to go out and kill

but don't forget to understand exactly what you put on the tree

don't believe the florist when he tells you that the roses are free

throw that pumpkin at the tree

unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny

cast it off into the sea, bake that pie and eat it with me

throw that pumpkin at the tree

unless you think that pumpkin holds your destiny

cast it off into the sea, bake that pie and eat it with me

i don't know if this is a thing on here, where any one day a week a bunch of us her musicians cover a song that we like, but if it isn't already, let's make it a thing! i'd love to hear some of the songs the rest of you are into, and what music is really inspiring you from week to week!!!!!!

this one goes out to any phish fans out there - and no i'm not talking about the bad type of phish that we all hate.... i'm talking about the band that only most people hate :) i myself am actually quite fond of the band, and although they are mostly known for their extended instrumental improvisation, they have surely written a ton of beautiful and powerful songs.

trey anastasio, the frontman for the group, is the band's main songwriter, and is an artist i alone have seen perform live on 3 separate occasions in the past 3 years (his side project oysterhead (with les claypool and stewart copeland) was the last concert i saw pre-pandemic on 2/15/2020 in boulder, co), but i have yet to hear this song performed live. although trey is better known for his extremely complex and extended compositions, this song is vastly different. a bit humbling for himself as an artist, and i think accents the subject of it well.

this song was recorded with a relatively simple arrangement, extremely stripped down when you compare it to the normal phish sound, yet trey's soothing voice accents the melody beautifully, at times even harmonizing the two together (which i cannot do the song any justice for). the song just feels so accessible in listening to it, but then as you begin to hear the lyrics and really comprehend them, it all begins to make sense.

recently i have been obsessing over sappy love songs - call it a phase, but it's kind of always been this way as the hopeless romantic i am; this song plays perfectly into that. the most ironic thing about this song is in the fact that it is called "waste" when in fact the type of wasting that the song's protagonist wants is not really a waste at all. often times it does feel like you can just waste your time with someone special and it wouldn't matter. often times you actually want to waste all of your time with a lover, and ignore all of the responsibilities of having a profession or legitimate things to do. there is something extremely romantic and calming about being able to do nothing with someone you love and being completely fulfilled in doing so.

but it is not just the protagonists desire to want to waste his time with his love, but it is really his love's need to realize that she wants to waste her time with him (i use these pronouns because trey is a straight man, and i am also a straight man interpreting these lyrics, but they can obviously go any way your heart desires). the protagonist is asking her that if he is inside of her head, to not believe what she may have read, or see what he may have said, but to hear him. he wants her to come waste her time with him. come waste your time with me. nobody wants to "waste" their time with the wrong person, but to find that person would be something special.

this, in my eyes, may be the pinnacle form of love we are all searching for. the person to waste the rest of our lives with.

P.S. if anyone has any recommendations on how to become a better singer, please let me know. i am obviously trying my best, but i am very very sorry for making you all suffer through my harsh and off-pitch singing.

waste - phish

don't want to be an actor pretending on the stage

don't want to be a writer with my thoughts out on the page

don't want to be a painter 'cause everyone comes to look

don't want to be anything where my life's an open book

a dream it's true

but i'd see it through

if i could be

wasting my time with you

don't want to be a farmer working in the sun

don't want to be an outlaw always on the run

don't want to be a climber reaching for the top

don't want to be anything where i don't know when to stop

a dream it's true

but i'd see it through

if i could be

wasting my time with you

so if i'm inside your head

don't believe what you might have read

you'll see what i might have said

to hear it

come waste your time with me

come waste your time with me

so if i'm inside your head

don't believe what you might have read

you'll see what i might have said

to hear it

come waste your time with me

come waste your time with me

come waste your time with me

come waste your time with me

come waste your time with me

i can still recall the first time hearing this song played live on an acoustic guitar and the chills it sent through my body. hearing my friend matt play this song, was part of the inspiration for me to pick up a guitar in the first place, and this has always been a song i've been drawn to in my grateful dead listening experience. the studio version (youtube link below) off of their 1970 album Workingman's Dead is an exquisite piece of music, filled with beautiful harmonies and terrific instrumental fills that a solo acoustic guitar cannot fully appreciate (it's said that jerry garcia traded pedal steel guitar parts for crosby stills and nash's "teach your children" and in return they taught the dead how to harmonize [imagine what it'd be like to be in the san francisco music scene in the late 60's/early 70's!]). the whole album is really a masterful work of americana-styled music, and is where i think the band really began their drastic shift from psychedelic rockers to true musicians.

while the grateful dead are a band known for "being high" this song doesn't evoke the same feelings of "high" as in a stoned or intoxicated state. to me the "high time" is a man who is enjoying himself and living his life to the fullest. and this woman wants to join him on his journey, but hers is not quite as spectacular and joyful as his. he is able to recognize this, and is okay with the reality of the situation, and keeps encouraging her that "i could show you a high time" and "we could have us a high time" and he will help her through this time in her life, and it doesn't have to be much more complicated than that.

a simple kind of love, one which doesn't need to be complicated. let's both just enjoy ourselves "come in when it's raining / go on out when it's gone".

that'd be nice.

high time - grateful dead you told me goodbye

how was i to know

you didn't mean goodbye

you meant please don't let me go

i was having a high time

living the good life

well i know

the wheels are muddy

got a ton of hay

now listen here baby

'cause i mean what i say

i'm having a hard time

living the good life

well i know

i was losing time, i had nothing to do

no-one to fight, i came to you

wheels broke down, the leader won't draw

the line is busted, the last one i saw

tomorrow comes trouble (note 1)

tomorrow comes pain

now don't think too hard, baby

'cause you know what i'm saying

i could show you a high time

living the good life

don't be that way

nothing's for certain

it could always go wrong

come in when it's raining

go on out when it's gone

we could have us a high time

living the good life

well i know

first and foremost, i'm sorry for the heinous vocals.

love is such an interesting experience. with the many stages of it, it’s no surprise they all feel so different and powerful. it’s difficult to have perspective on a situation when you’re enveloped in it, but sometimes perspective is all you need to give yourself clarity.

i’m 24 years old, and a somewhat inexperienced lover. i’ve had relationships of sorts with women and had some fun in them too, but nothing ever really serious and things have never really lasted more than 6 months or so.

this is arguably one of the best most simply written songs to describe what a heart break actually feels like, specifically for a young man (i can’t speak to the experiences of other sexes). here, neil talks about what it’s like to be a young “lover”. someone who is out looking for a good time and cannot settle down and commit to someone. while it’s fun to play games, ultimately he feels alone by the lack of “love” in his life. i think that’s a relatable feelings for a lot of people. while we try to fill voids in our lives with physical connections, the emotional ones are really what we’re seeking as they provide the warmth long after the person leaves your side. so in order to do that, it’s necessary to go out and truly fall in love, because hooking up with women for the sake of it doesn’t actually help the heart to grow.

the chorus sums up perfectly why we are all searching for that special someone, and the lengths we will go to sometimes find out that the person you are with is not the one. ultimately you won’t always know, which is why you “try to be sure right from the start” to avoid your world falling apart when your heart is broken because you’ve fallen in love with the wrong woman. “yes, only love can break your heart” is a gentle and sobering reminder that what you’ve felt was in fact love, as even when you’re feeling it it’s hard to know. but that pain in your chest where you find yourself thinking about this person long after they’ve left sure is indicative of a heartbreak.

the next verse where neil talks about a friend really is resonating with me today. for a long time of listening to this song i had just assumed his friend was another person, but upon listening to it this morning i have a new perspective. his friend is his own ego. when you experience a heart break your life can often feel as though it’s in shambles. the pieces that once made sense are now a mystery and you no longer feel like doing the things you once did. neil’s ego is hiding in dreams; dreams of love, dreams of romance, dreams of alternate realities where his heart is not broken. in reality, a heart break is really just a bruised ego that needs repairing. our egos are all so fragile and when you build your world around someone you care about you begin to give a part of yourself up. you expose your ego and your partner has a mainline into it. at a moments notice, they can cut that off and it just hurts so badly for a while until it heals. you’ve gotta lose the down that you’ve found.

it’s said that neil young wrote this song for his friend graham nash after his split with joni mitchell, and it’s really amazing to understand that someone could si prolifically write a song for a friend to help them make sense of what they’re feeling. you’d have to imagine yourself that he in fact had experienced his own heartbreak that gave way for his inspiration.

i think the most important takeaway from this song though is, that a heartbreak will always heal. it may feel awful today, but as fragile as our egos are, they will heal. the ego itself is conditioned to be hurt when things like this happen, and our brains try to trick us into thinking that our egos are ourselves, but in reality it’s just a manifestation of the expectations and feelings we’re conditioned to believe.

only love can break your heart - neil young

when you were young

and on your own

how did it feel to be alone

i was always thinking of games

that i was playing

trying to make the best of my time

but only love can break your heart

try to be sure right from the start

yes, only love can break your heart

what if your world should fall apart

i have a friend i've never seen

he hides his head inside a dream

someone should call him and see

if he can come out

trying to lose the down that he's found

but only love can break your heart

try to be sure right from the start

yes, only love can break your heart

what if your world should fall apart

i have a friend i've never seen

he hides his head inside a dream

yes, only love can break your heart

yes, only love can break your heart

yes, only love can break your heart

yes, only love can break your heart

yes, only love can break your heart

cover of the first track from neil young’s album “Harvest” a powerful song with lots of imagery and a complete story, all while being vague and mysterious like neil usually was. tells a story of a lonely boy unsure of where he is in his life, and who falls in love with women too easily, or at the very least before they do.

forgive my poor singing, i’m trying :) (neil by critical standards wasn't that great either, but could you imagine a neil young song without his voice??)
