Romans 13 is all about how we are to live as good & godly citizens in a secular society, particularly as it relates to the government and those in positions of power over us in society. How are we as followers of Jesus to think about our relationship with the state and with governing authorities? What about when we disagree with the governing authorities or when they even impose 'evil' laws upon us? What then? Paul talks us through it in Romans 13...

Romans 12-16 is all about how we are to live in light of all that God has done for us in Christ (i.e "The Gospel", as Paul explained it in Romans 1-11). And in Romans 12:3-21, Paul hones in our relationships with one another. How should the Gospel shape our relationships in the church? And how should it impact the way we deal with conflict and with people who make life difficult for us? How is the good news of Jesus good news for our relationships? That's the question in this week's passage...

Having marveled at the gospel and God’s sovereign power in the first eleven chapters of Romans, Paul now begins to consider the difference this makes in our lives and in the way we treat one another. So, how can we live full on for God? And how does the Gospel change the way we live?

In Romans 9–11, Paul grapples with many big questions about God’s sovereignty, his plan of salvation, 'divine election', the role of Israel in God's story, and his desire to use us to share his message with those who don't know Jesus. But if God is truly in control and everything is predetermined according to his sovereign plan, what is our role, really?

Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, we (who are in Christ) have been forgiven for all of our sin. But it doesn't stop there. Not only have we been forgiven, but we've also been given the Holy Spirit. But what does that mean? And what does it look like to experience "Life in the Spirit?"

Romans is a letter that has transformed many lives. From Paul’s original audience of first-century house churches in Rome to us today at The Gathering in 2024 - the truths contained in this letter are life-changing, giving us a deeper knowledge of the Gospel while also equipping us to apply the Gospel in our daily lives.

That’s why, throughout the winter and spring of 2024, we’re journeying through the book of Romans together as a church family. As we look ahead to all that God has for us as a church family, we want ensure that we are being shaped & formed by the Gospel in all that we do; knowing it more deeply while applying it more intentionally. We want to be a people who are being transformed by the Gospel!

Although the church Paul is writing to is facing difficulty and persecution, Paul is confident in the message of the gospel and urges them to remain confident as well. So how can we become confident in our faith despite the challenges we face today too?

Jesus had a lot to say about money. In fact, 1 out of every 7 verses of Jesus’ words are money in some way. It’s an unavoidable reality: Living a generous life includes financial generosity. We cannot simultaneously hoard our treasure and experience the kind of life that Jesus died to give us. So, how can we be intentional to live generously with our financial treasure, especially when it feels like we don’t have enough? And how might better understanding the gospel of Jesus lead us to live more financially generous lives?

God has given each of us a set of unique gifts and talents. And they are not just for our sake - they are for the sake of others. So how can we be intentional to live generously with our talents, especially when we aren’t so sure of what our talents are or where they fit? How might understanding how God has wired & gifted us empower us to live a more generous life?

Generosity is not just about what we do with our money; it is a way of life… a beautiful way of life.

Jesus told us that those who try to hold on to their lives will lose them while those who generously sacrifice their lives for his sake and for the sake of others will gain them. So then, what does it look like to live generous and sacrificial lives? And how can Jesus shape us into the kind of people whose lives reflect the beauty and generosity of God?

This January, join us at The Gathering as we explore the theme of generosity and how we can become even more intentional in giving of our time, talents and treasures - for Jesus’ sake and for the sake of our hurting world.

For many of us, our most valuable resource is not our money or something we own - it’s our time. And at times, it feels as though we don’t have enough of it. So how can we live generously with our time, especially when life feels so busy? And what priorities might Jesus invite us to have as we consider how we spend our time?

In a special “Pulpit Swap” with Renewal Church Ottawa, we’re hearing from Pastor Josh Wang!!  In John 8, we are presented with a messy scene. This is a tale of how religion can be wrongfully wielded to harm others rather than setting them free. A woman stands humiliated in full display before the crowd, and the religious accusers are setting a trap for Jesus. The angry crowd have stones in hand ready to execute her judgment, while others learn to drop the stone in light of Jesus. Who are WE in this story? Jesus reminds us why Love is the way, the truth and the life. Jesus reminds us that new life and turning from sins flows from the grace of the God who saves.

There are certain places where you might expect to see God at work. In a church for example, or within a religious group. However, in today's story we are reminded that Jesus goes to some unexpected places and has conversations that were very unusual for his time.  Through these stories we will remember how God is at work drawing people to himself that don't necessarily fit our ideal of a Christian. Jesus breaks through barriers and loves unexpected people in unexpected places.

Humanity was created to abide in God’s presence, to live in a way that is utterly distinct. These words were an invitation to live by the Spirit, to adopt a depth of joy, trust and gratitude when facing the harsh realities of the world. This blessing was not only instructive, but simultaneously inspiring, comforting and life-changing.

Most of us want to have a White Christmas every year. Even if we don’t like snow the rest of winter, we like it at Christmas. Why is that? Is it because of the nostalgia? Or is it because the sense of peace & calm that the snow brings (1 day a year)? Whatever the case, a “White Christmas” sounds great to most of us.

From a Christian perspective though, “White Christmas” is more than a dream. It’s actually why Jesus came that first Christmas some 2000 years ago. Not for snow, of course, but so that we could be forgiven and made as “white as snow” in Him (Isaiah 1:18).

This is what we celebrate each and every Christmas; That because God came near, we can be forgiven and made clean. And that because Jesus came as a baby, we can be made new (and as white as snow!).

It's Christmas Eve at The Gathering, let's experience a “White Christmas” together.

The Book of Acts tells an amazing story. It tells the story of how God began the movement known as The Church. And it tells the story of all the amazing things that God, by His Spirit, did through this movement as His people committed to following Jesus together and to reclaiming God’s vision for the world, even as they faced some extraordinary challenges together.

For us, coming out of the pandemic (we hope!), there may be no better time than now to explore this story together as a church. What can we learn about ‘being the church’ through this amazing story together? And how might God long to recapture our imaginations and rekindle His vision for the church in us as we look at this story together as The Gathering?

This fall, join us at The Gathering as we begin our journey through the book of Acts and look to receive fresh inspiration from God as we join Him in His mission today.

Today's episode is from Thanksgiving Sunday, Sunday October 10, 2021 and is called “Casting Lots”.  This week, our Lead Pastor Jeff Jantzi works through Acts 1:12-26, which talks about discerning God’s will for our lives. What can we learn from this story of Mathias replacing Judas?  Listen to find out!
