Having taken 2nd place in the Senior Sean Nós Dancing Competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023 in Mullingar, Ava Glancy dances a Reel, repeating her All-Ireland performance, in her native Ballymote at the Paddy Killoran Annual Festival in September 2023. The Festival was a wonderful celebration of the Branch’s amazing level of success at the Fleadh with seven 1st places. In all, the County had 13 All-Ireland medallists in 2023, with eight of the All-Ireland medallists now providing the music (“The Duke of Leinster”) for Ava’s dance. They are L/R Lisa Golden, Gervase Carty, Aaron Glancy, Amy Cullen, Shauna Cullen, Sinéad Johnson, Conor McDonagh and Ryan Sheridan.
In a special Open Air Concert Tribute to the late great Joe Burke at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023, a group of 28 All-Ireland Senior Button Accordion Champions from 1963 to 2022 played this selection of Reels - “Lord McDonald’s” and “Ballinasloe Fair” - with accompaniment by Adrian Ó Brádaigh.The excellent Concert was organised by Karen McCormack and presented by well-known Accordion player Martin Donoghue, who also joined in the group selections. During the Concert each of the Accordion players did a solo performance and there were several full group selections during the Concert. The newly crowned Fiddler of Dooney 2023, Ademar O Connor from Co. Offaly, playing a Reel - “Brendan McGlinchey’s” - in the Competition in Sligo on 29th October 2023. Ademar also won the Senior Fiddle Competition at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023 in Mullingar.
Taking 1st place in 15-18 Duets Competition at the Ulster Fleadh Cheoil 2023 in Dromore, Co. Tyrone, Ciarán McKenna and Megan Teague from CCÉ, Clogher Valley, Co. Tyrone, play a Jig - “The Castleblaney Piper” (Ed. Reavy”).
Recorded in the local historic Claregalway Castle, Galway, 5 musicians from the local Lackagh Comhaltas Branch play a Jig and Reel - “Sir Donats Road” and “The Red Bee” (J. Liddy). Don’t miss the Glissando ‘Explosion’ on the piano in the middle of the tunes ! ! The musicians are Emma Crowley, Lorna Forde, Nicole McLoughlin, Aisling Cribbin and Leah Elwood. Many thanks to Sharon Connell-Geraghty for her invitation to record and for all her help organising the recordings on 10th March 2024, and to her fellow Lackagh Comhaltas Teachers - Sinéad Walsh, Annemarie Hughes,Mary Duggan and Rachael Hughes. All-Ireland Champion for 2011 on Concert Flute and Tin Whistle, Orlaith McAuliffe from London is joined by the McKee brothers from Derry - Stephen on Banjo and Eoin on Bodhrán, with Eddie Kane (Kildare) on Guitar, for a selection of 3 Reels - “Tommy People’s”, “The Long Drop” and “The Galtee Rangers”. Stephen and Eoin played with the Slieve Gallion Céilí Band (on Banjo and Drums) in Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2019. Incidentally, Stephen is playing the rarely-heard 22-fret Banjo, as against the more usual 19 fret.

The Band, who travelled over 17,000 Km, received a rousing and well-deserved reception from the delighted audience. Band members are - Fiddles : Angus Barbary, Caitlín Brennan and Declan Simpson; Flute : Máirtin Staunton; Concertina : Shauna Moore; Pipes : Conor Hoy; Banjo : Anthony McTigue; Piano : Margaret Carty; Drums : Bec Simpson; Didgeridoo : Rhys Crimmin. At the Scoil Éigse Tutors Concert at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2023, Tutors Sandra Walsh (banjo) and Máiréad Carey (flute) play a Hornpipe composed by fellow Corkman Martin Power, called “Joe’s 85th”, called after another well known Corkman Joe O’ Donovan. Both Martin and Joe have contributed enormously in many ways to our Music and Dance culture over many decades. The Hornpipe played by Sandra and Máiréad is followed by a Reel - “The Whistling Postman”.

The current All-Ireland 12-15 Fiddle Champion Laoise Kennedy from Ormond Comhaltas in Nenagh, Co.
