Here at the Word at Work we believe God's word (the Bible) is worth spending time unpacking, exploring and understanding and we believe that His Word is at work.
Our series in 2 Samuel with Scott Tubman comes to an end. Scott continues by looking at the kindness of the king and what will happen to those who end up not obeying the king.
As we near the end of our series in 2 Samuel we will spend the final two episodes with Scott looking at the Kindness of the King.
Having prayed his prayer, David commences his reign and conquest of many tribes and nations. In these final episodes we consider the type of king and kingdom that God is establishing through David.
In this episode, we continue with the famous passage of 2 Samuel 7. Here Scott looks at the prayer of David. In light of the prophecy of Nathan, what is it that David prays for?
In 2 Samuel 7 we find one of the Bible's most famous promises to King David. The great Davidic promise is where we are in this episode and Scott will be walking us through this very important passage.
Episode 4 of our series in 2 Samuel with Scott Tubman. In this episode we see what happens when David and his men bring the Ark of the Lord back to Jerusalem.
With kingship comes opposition and in this episode Scott looks at David and the Israelites going up against the ancient foe of Israel, the Philistines.

It's the first talk in our Advent series with Presiding Bishop of Reach SA Glenn Lyons. In this first talk we are in Matthew's gospel and our keyword is Rescue.
The church in Laodicea was in terrible shape and they didn’t know it. They were in danger of being spat out of Jesus’ mouth. When Jesus looks at the church he sees a church that is ineffective. A purposeless church. Neither hot nor cold. Jesus gives a warning and council to the church as they face this danger.
When we stand up for biblical truth, and speak the bible into our culture we can expect to be persecuted. How do we stand firm in faith when this happens? John encourages this church by reminding them that Jesus holds the key to the Kingdom, in him there is victory, Jesus helps us endure and he will keep us secure.
Confidence is a great quality in life. But overconfidence or false confidence can be dangerous. The church at Sardis needed a wake-up call. They seemed to have it all together, but were in danger of losing everything. Jesus’ words to them are so relevant for churches today.
Tolerance is the great virtue of our age. But what should God’s people tolerate? More importantly, what should they not tolerate? The church at Thyatira is in danger of getting it badly wrong. Let their mistakes be a warning to us.
The church at Pergamum is a warning to us. They had so much going for them, but failed in one crucial area - holiness. As a result, Jesus’ patience has almost run out. What do we need to do to avoid their mistakes?
The book of Revelation shows us that the normal Christian experience is opposition. What does it look like to hold onto your faith when the pressure is on? Jesus’ words to the church at Smyrna are an encouragement to us all.
We often pride ourselves on being holders of the truth, but instead of it leading to affections for Jesus and broken sinners, it sometimes leads to scepticism, religiosity and lovelessness, both for Jesus and others. Jesus is calling the church to recover its first love.
In these verses John paints for us one of the most breathtaking pictures of Jesus. It is both beautiful and terrifying all at once. It leaves us in awe of his power and glory, and should change us. True gospel change comes from steadily gazing at the glory of Jesus.
These verses function as an introduction and as a bit of a trailer of what’s to come. Most of the important themes are here. As we look at this introduction, there are important details of why this book exists and who will benefit from reading and understanding it.
North and south spiral around each other into the banality of idolatrous oblivion. Does God have a plan? What now for the Kingdom promised to David and the God who would dwell with his people?
As Jeroboam secures his throne in the north, God sends a prophet from the south to remind him whose kingdom it is. But the destinies of south and north are entwined, and a deadly encounter with a lion reminds us that their fate is not in their hands.
Solomon’s legacy is a mess. His son, Rehoboam, tussles for power with the formerly disgraced administrator, Jeroboam. The kingdom God promised to David tears itself apart, and we finally learn what it would take to be a righteous king. The temple is Solomon’s most enduring achievement. Breathtaking in scope, it is built to mirror the cosmic order itself. And it teaches us something about the God whose stubborn intention is to dwell with his people.

Welcome to the first episode in our series The Books of Kings. Our host for this series is Dr. Nathan Lovell from George Whitefield College (GWC). Nathan is part of the faculty at GWC and is also the Director of Research. Here is a rundown of our first episode: Israel’s great king David lies frail and weak, while his sons fight for power. What will become of the kingdom that he built? What will become of God’s promise to build an eternal kingdom through him?
We come, at last, to the final section of the introduction. Again and again, we have been told about two very different ways to live: the way of wisdom, and the way of folly. We receive two seemingly identical (but actually very different!) invitations from Lady Wisdom and Lady Folly. This section of Proverbs concludes by forcing the reader to make a decision: which way will we choose? In Proverbs 8, we read the most majestic section in the entire book. Lady Wisdom tells us about herself, and reveals all her wonderful attributes: insight, righteousness, sound judgement and power. She is indispensable to leadership and social order, because she is the fundamental principle of creation. In episode 3 of our series, as we continue to explore wisdom, we meet Lady Wisdom one of the key characters in the book of Proverbs. Lady Wisdom speaks up, and exhorts us to embrace her words. The stakes couldn’t be higher - and we are left with a key question: will we accept her teaching?
This, the first of the father’s lectures, introduces us to some of the crucial distinctions between wisdom and folly. Wisdom comes to us in the form of teaching and instruction, and so it may not look particularly appealing. However, it yields a harvest of social honour and moral beauty. Fooly, contrastingly, looks enticing but in the end yields destruction. This is the boomerang effect of folly: when we act foolishly, in the end we hurt ourselves. Fools lie in wait for their own blood.

This passage tells us what Proverbs will do for us - it will give us wisdom. We see here what wisdom consists of (discretion, righteousness, insight, etc), who it is for (both the young and simple as well as the wise and mature) and how to get it (fear the Lord!).
It's the final episode in our series. A big thank you to Murray Anderson from St. Peters church in Fish Hoek for this series in Matthew 8-10. In the extended section of teaching in Matthew 10 Jesus has one eye on the immediate mission he’s sending the disciples on, but another eye on preparing them for what they will face, further in the future, when he’s gone. There are some key principles and warnings that apply to any disciple in any era - the key thing to be prepared for, is the fact that preaching about Jesus will lead to division!
In this episode, Murray consider the compassion of the King. Before Jesus sends his disciples out on mission we get some insight into some of the core values that are to shape that mission: clarity about the Kingdom (and our role in preahcing it); gut-wrenching compassion for the lost and dependence on our Heavenly Father.
Faith is a misunderstood word! What is faith? In this episode we look at what “faith” is (and isn’t!) and see how different people showed varying degrees of faith in response to Jesus.
Jesus was a King on a mission. In this episode, Murray looks at Jesus' priorities. We'll see that his priority was to call sinners to repentance - offering them forgiveness and transformation.

In John 14:6 Jesus makes a bold and exclusive claim that showcases that the path to God is personal. The Path to God is through the person of Jesus and this path has no obstacles, no to-do lists, but to do one work of God: that is believe in Jesus.

In Hebrews 12:28 the writer exhorts us to ‘offer to God acceptable worship’. This language means different things to different people depending on their context. In Hebrews 13 the writer describes this acceptable worship as a way of life and a way of speaking which brings praise to God. Daily life and doctrine in practice are thus the way that we worship God.This is a very different view to the one that sees worship merely in terms of what happens in church or the songs we sing.
In Hebrews 12:3-29 we are given a description of Kingdom Life, that is the way of life that we are to pursue as those who, in Christ, are receiving a KIngdom that cannot be shaken (10:28). Once again the writer reminds us of our privileges and responsibilites. As sharers in the New Covenant we are part of the heavenly church and part of the family of God. Therefore we are to fight sin and pursue holiness. In this God’s loving discipline (instruction) is critical.
In Hebrews 11:1-12:3 we have a profound and powerfully motivating description of the life of faith. It is by faith that we run with perseverance the race that is set before us. Hebrews 11 shows that God’s people were always called upon to live for the future and thus by faith. But the greatest hero of the faith is Jesus Himself whom we are called to imitate. The link between faith, sight, hope and the future promise brings together the writers concern throughout the letter - that we persevere in our faith in the Lord Jesus no matter what the cost.
In this episode we look at Hebrews 10:19-39, the response to the fact that in Jesus we have become sharers in a new and better covenant. The writer urges us to remember that we are living in the light of eternity and the approaching day of judgement. With that in mind we are exhorted (1) to draw near to God’s heavenly throne through Christ our mediator, (2) hold fast to our confession of faith and (3) encourage one another in personal fellowship and godly perseverance in our faith.
In this episode we look at Hebrews 8:1-10:18, a passage in which the writer shows that the covenant that Jesus brings is far better than the first covenant of which Moses was the mediator. Both came from God but the first was temporary and fallible, at best a shadow of what was to come. The covenant in Jesus is the fulfilment of what God promised in Jeremiah 31, and succeeds for us because in it Jesus’ offers a perfect sacrifice in the true Holy place - the one in heaven of which the earthly tabernacle with its ritual was just a copy rather than the reality.
In this episode we look at our response to the fact that Jesus is the great high priest who has entered heaven and who remains a priest forever. We see that in Hebrews 4:14-16 and Hebrews 5:11-6:12 we are urged to hold fast to our faith by growing to maturity of understanding of who Jesus is and what He has done for us. We are also warned that since Jesus is the great high priest, He alone can save. To turn away from Him is thus to forfeit the salvation he has come to bring.
In this episode and the next we will be looking at the central claim of the letter, namely that Jesus the Son of God has become our great high priest and that His priesthood is permanent and thus superior to all who have gone before. This point is made and applied to the Christian’s daily life in Hebrews 4:14-7:28. Today we are looking at the truth about Jesus’ priesthood and in the next episode we will think about how we are to respond to Jesus our High Priest.
In Hebrews 3:1-4:13 the author shows that Jesus is far greater than Moses and that the Sabbath rest that Jesus gives is far greater than anything that Moses or Joshua could give to the people of Israel in the Promised land. God’s creation purpose of true rest and blessing in relationship with Him is thus fulfilled by believing the gospel about God’s son Jesus - today and everyday.
In Hebrews 2:5-18, the focus shifts from the glorified Son Jesus to the incarnate, suffering Son Jesus. For Jesus the road to glory is via the cross and it is there that he deals with our sin. But to do this he has to become just like us, sharing our humanity, so that through His obedience even to death, He can become our sympathetic high priest. Furthermore, by His death Jesus defeats death and overcomes the devil, thus setting us free.

In Hebrews 1:5 -2:4 the author compares Jesus with the angels and shows that now glorified at the Father’s right hand, Jesus has the name that is above every name, a name and thus status far superior to that of the angels. He is making this point because he wants to show us that the gospel word spoken by Jesus is far better than the old covenant words given to Moses through the angels.
