What does a successful financial planning firm actually look like?

For Andrew Damcevski, founder of AJD Wealth Management, the answer isn’t building the biggest firm possible. It’s working with 100 great clients, providing a high level of service, and building a business that gives him control over his time.

In this episode, Andrew joins us to talk about his path from starting in the insurance world and moving to the fee-only world, starting and selling a firm, and eventually launching AJD Wealth Management.

We get into the value of learning sales early in your career, the realities of starting from scratch, why keeping your personal expenses low can give new firm owners more runway, and the tradeoffs between building a large enterprise and intentionally staying small.

Sometimes the goal isn’t a bigger practice. It’s building the practice you actually want.

What happens when a Dow Chemical employee turned real estate investor can't find a financial planner willing to look at his whole picture? He becomes one himself.

In this episode of Only Fee Only, Peter and Broc talk with Ethan Kok, owner of Sage Wealth Planning. Ethan shares how his search for real financial advice as a young investor in Midland, Michigan opened his eyes to the fee-only model — and ultimately pulled him out of a corporate career and into financial planning. He breaks down how he built his early client base by mastering Dow's complex employee benefits, why offering flat-fee planning to clients without big portfolios is an opportunity most advisors miss, and what he learned from purchasing Sage from its founder, including why the transition plan matters just as much as the purchase price.

Ethan also talks about his team's shared passion for tax planning, how his appreciation for insurance planning has grown over the years, the "downer meeting" his firm uses to help clients get real about life insurance and estate planning, and his advice for anyone at a big company thinking about a career change into this profession.

Your clients may have millions in company stock and still struggle with the decisions that matter most: exercise now or later, hold or sell, diversify or stay concentrated. In this episode, we sit down with Marcel Miu, founder of Simplify Wealth Planning in Austin, Texas, to discuss how advisors can help clients navigate equity compensation while building a successful advisory firm.

Marcel shares his journey from JP Morgan and Cohen & Steers to launching his own fee-only RIA, and why technical expertise alone isn't enough to grow a business. We discuss the realities of client acquisition, how marketing has evolved, why LinkedIn isn't the opportunity it once was, and why advisors need multiple marketing channels instead of relying on a single strategy.

We also explore flat-fee financial planning versus AUM, particularly for tech professionals whose investment portfolios may be simple but whose planning needs are anything but. Marcel explains why a flat-fee model often creates better alignment, how to set clear expectations, and how to determine whether a client is the right fit.

Money advice tends to break down in one predictable place: the messy middle between knowing what you should do and actually doing it this week. That's where Linda Grizely shines.

Linda is a financial coach, speaker, and podcast host who took a winding path into financial services. She brings a rare mix of empathy and practicality for people who feel behind, ashamed, or priced out of traditional financial planning.

We talk about what she learned in sales-driven environments, why advice-only and coaching can better serve everyday households, and how meeting people where they are changes everything. Linda shares how her own life experiences shaped her mission to help the people many advisors overlook, especially clients without the assets for an AUM relationship or the budget for a full fee-only plan. The through-line is simple: clear education, no jargon, and systems that make progress feel possible.

Then we get into her Me Money Method, a behavioral approach to budgeting and cash flow that turns gray-area spending into an intentional container. You will hear the story that inspired it, how it reduces guilt, improves communication between couples, and creates better choices without shaming lattes, shoes, golf trips, or vacations. Linda also breaks down five money personality types and how advisors can listen for cues to tailor strategies people will actually follow.

If you want a realistic way to track spending, build money habits, and lower money stress, hit play. Subscribe, share this with a friend who feels stuck, and leave a review so more listeners can find the show.

Money decisions are rarely just about math. The hardest part is often the human side. Rafael Melendez of NextGen Financial Planning joins us to discuss how fee-only financial planning helps younger families move from stress and uncertainty to confident, intentional decisions.

We explore Rafael’s path into the profession, what he learned from sales-driven environments, and how those experiences shaped his client-first approach. We also break down what “fee-only” really means and why it can be a great fit for people who need planning guidance without having millions invested.

Rafael shares his journey from joining NextGen during the pandemic to becoming a partner as the firm evolved. We discuss firm ownership, balancing growth with flexibility, and his advice for aspiring RIA owners: design the life you want first, then build the business around it.

We also walk through a real-world planning scenario involving a high-stress job, stock compensation, student loans, and the decision to earn less in exchange for a better quality of life.

A hedge fund job that started with weeding a garden? Colin Page's career story is unique, but the lessons are practical for anyone building a fee-only financial planning firm.

We sit down with Colin, founder of Oakleigh Wealth Services in Charlottesville, Virginia, and trace his path from teaching high school math after the 2009 financial crisis, to more than a decade investing in distressed securities and bankruptcies, to launching his own independent practice.

We talk about what changes when you move from markets to people. Colin shares why hedge fund work can feel disconnected from real goals, and what pulled him toward fiduciary planning for retirees and near-retirees: retirement income, tax-efficient withdrawals, Medicare choices, and legacy planning. We also get specific about the messy early decisions every advisor faces around niche, marketing, compliance, and building a firm without an existing book.

Colin breaks down the mental game too: pricing "head trash," choosing between AUM, advice-only, and flat-fee models, and designing onboarding that respects your time. His document-first consultation approach is a simple filter that signals seriousness and keeps a lifestyle practice sustainable as referrals grow.

If you're trying to build a practice that supports your life, not the other way around, this one is worth your time.

Your income can grow fast and still leave you feeling behind. That's the paradox we dig into with Sean Rawlings, founder of WealthBound Advisors, who works with young, high-income earners scaling toward $500K or seven figures only to realize they have no system for taxes, spending, or big decisions.

Sean shares his story: Southern California roots, a start at a mutual firm, and the growing discomfort of watching "financial planning" turn into product pitches. He explains what pushed him toward independence, how he found the fee-only model, and why building an RIA is more achievable than many new advisors think.

From there, we get specific. Sean covers what great onboarding looks like for first-time planning clients, how he uses modern tools (including AI like Claude) to stay efficient while keeping things high-touch, and the biggest pain point for fast-growing earners: tax planning around variable income. We close with real estate as an asset class, when it's worth the complexity, and how concepts like cost segregation and 1031 exchanges fit into a coordinated plan.

A lot of wealth management still assumes you've already "made it" before you deserve real advice. Chelsea Ransom-Cooper, CFP®, co-founder of Zenith Wealth Partners, is challenging that assumption by building a fee-only RIA designed to serve women and people of color with relatable, high-quality financial planning.

Chelsea walks us through the turning points that shaped Zenith: discovering fee-only planning through early networking, recognizing in 2020 that her client base didn't reflect the people who inspired her to enter the profession, and partnering with co-founder Jason Ray to build what they couldn't find in the market. She shares a concrete early-business tactic we loved — using a simple "30-name" validation list to prove demand and build confidence before making the leap, then turning those early conversations into her first wave of clients.

We also get specific on how to scale without losing the mission. Chelsea explains how Zenith thinks about capacity (targeting 60 to 80 clients per advisor), support staffing, and using EOS to put the right people in the right seats. We dig into their flexible fee structure, including why they hold a minimum fee for service, avoid asset minimums, and blend planning engagements, retainer-style work, and AUM as clients' balance sheets evolve.

Chelsea also shares how she manages a packed calendar through delegation, why that creates real growth opportunities for the next generation of advisors, and how her "zone of genius" in equity compensation helps her stand out. If you care about accessible financial advice, building a sustainable fee-only firm, and scaling with intention, this one is for you.

A lot of advisors want to launch their own fee-only RIA, but the gap between "I'm ready" and "I have clients" can feel enormous. We're talking with Matt Ryan, founder of Focused Mission Financial in San Diego, about how he made the leap in 2022 after nearly a decade inside planning-focused firms, and what it actually looked like to build momentum from the ground up.

We get specific about how his growth really happened: boots-on-the-ground marketing through coffees, lunches, and golf, backed by consistent touchpoints like a newsletter and short-form video. Matt also shares the truth about shiny objects, including paid lead programs like SmartAsset, and why some tactics fall flat for a solo RIA without the time and speed to follow up like a larger team.

On the client service side, Matt walks us through how his process evolved into a formal six-step onboarding system, plus what changed when he hired an operations specialist to tighten workflows. We also dig into his work with self-employed clients, including solo 401(k) planning and tax planning, and how those needs show up differently than traditional retiree households.

Finally, we talk about scaling with intention, integrating clients from a retiring advisor's book, and setting a boundary around lifestyle so growth never crowds out family time.

If you're building an advisory firm, refining your financial planning process, or trying to find marketing that fits your personality, you'll take away practical ideas you can use right away. A "backup plan" PowerPoint deck can become a real firm faster than you'd think, but the messy middle is where most people quit. Ryan Johnson, founder of Hundred Financial Planning, joins us to talk through what it actually takes to build a fee-only firm from the ground up.

Ryan shares how he found the fee-only RIA community through cold outreach, why he wanted ownership of a book of business, and what the first two years really felt like. We get into client experience, including the early mistake of overwhelming plan presentations and how he's shaping an ongoing service model that stays structured without feeling rigid.

We also dig into growth: why LinkedIn finally started generating leads, why silent followers often turn into your best prospects, his niche focus on high-earning young families, and the values-first discovery meeting that helps clients feel heard before any numbers come out. We close with AI in financial advice, where it helps, where it breaks, and why the risk of a wrong answer makes a human advisor worth the cost.

You can feel stuck in a successful career and still know it's not the life you want.

In this episode, we talk with Jacob Tally of Prospero Wealth about what it actually looks like to pivot later, especially after years in high-intensity environments like startups, corporate finance rotations, and big-name financial services.

Jacob shares the practical side of making the move: deciding between going solo or joining an independent RIA, why fee-only planning mattered to him, and how he evaluated firm fit before jumping.

We also get into planning for tech and startup employees, where equity compensation, job changes, and sudden life transitions create complexity that generic advice can't solve.

The most useful part is the decision framework. We dig into risk management beyond investing: pressure testing your situation, spotting blind spots, and using fear setting to turn vague anxiety into clear options. Jacob also challenges the obsession with goals, reframing growth around principles that keep you moving when life doesn't follow a neat timeline.

If you're considering a career change, building a financial plan, or trying to make a brave decision without guessing, this conversation gives you language and structure you can use right away.

Most financial advice is built around a default life plan — and it quietly breaks down when you've opted out of that script. Cory Smith is a fee-only financial life planner and founder of Discretionary Inc. in Reno, Nevada, where he works exclusively with childfree individuals, couples, and business owners who want their finances to support the life they actually want — not the one they were expected to want.

In this episode, we get into his core concept of discretion: the freedom to determine your own best course of action. We talk about what changes in planning when there are no assumed heirs, why longevity and support structures deserve more attention in this space, and how he works backward from a client's vision to build a financial framework around it.

Cory also shares the path that shaped his philosophy — from commission-driven environments and door knocking at Edward Jones to the fee-only model — and how he integrates George Kinder's Real Life Planning process into a modern client experience, including a concurrent planning approach that delivers early wins while the deeper work unfolds.

We also cover what's working in his business today: partnerships, community building, and using short-form and long-form content to reach people who are quietly rewriting the rules.

If you're interested in values-based planning and building a life on your own terms, this one's worth your time.

Ethan Miller had a six-month waitlist… while still working a full-time job.

We sat down with the founder of Planning for Progress to talk about how he went from union organizing to building a thriving fee-only firm just outside DC—without taking a reckless leap.

He shares how he found fee-only planning, built early momentum through project work, and knew commissions weren’t the path for him. We also get into what it actually looked like to earn his CFP while working nights and weekends—and the moment he knew it was time to go all in.

We also cover how he’s designed a lifestyle practice of ~50 households, how he thinks about client fit, and why being a “people person” can matter more than a finance background when starting out.

If you’re thinking about making the jump into financial planning, this is a grounded, real-world blueprint.

He didn’t grow his RIA through ads or a content machine. He grew it through trust, a simple fee model, and doing the unglamorous work when it mattered most.

In this episode, we’re joined by Logan Valentine, CFP®, founder of Valentine Wealth Management in Seymour, Indiana. We unpack his path from insurance to Charles Schwab, how earning the CFP shifted his thinking, and what clicked when he discovered the fee-only RIA model.

We also talk about the reality of building a firm early on—tight runway, young family, and the mindset required to keep going when things feel uncertain.

Then we get practical. Logan breaks down his pricing structure, including a minimum fee and capped maximum, and explains why he avoids charging on held-away assets like 401(k)s and 529s. The result: fewer conflicts and a simpler, more transparent sales process.

On the marketing side, this isn’t about hacks. It’s about what actually works for most advisors—strong reputation, Google reviews, local presence, SEO, and creating long-term advocates by helping people whether they become clients or not. (At one point, someone even found him by asking AI who to call.)

We wrap with the client experience—from discovery to onboarding—why cash flow is the foundation of good planning, and how thoughtful tax decisions can lead to real, tangible savings.

If you’re building a firm—or looking for transparent, fee-only advice—there’s a lot here you can take and apply.

One of the most uncomfortable questions in financial planning is also one of the most important: if you can’t speak for yourself, who will?

We’re joined by Maddy Roche, Chief Growth Officer at Childfree Trust and a long-time leader in the fee-only advisor community, to explore the planning gaps that often arise for clients who are child-free or permanently childless. This isn’t a niche situation—about one in four Americans doesn’t have kids, and that number is even higher among younger generations.

We discuss how a child-free lens can reshape a financial plan, from Monte Carlo projections and decumulation strategies to estate planning priorities and insurance needs. Maddy explains why life insurance may be less relevant for many in this group, while disability insurance, long-term care planning, and a clear medical power of attorney become even more important.

We also touch on the emotional side—the peace of mind that comes from having a professional, unbiased third party in place, rather than leaving difficult decisions to friends or distant relatives.

Maddy outlines what Childfree Trust offers nationwide, including serving as financial POA, medical POA, executor, or trustee, along with building detailed care plans covering everything from key contacts to pet care to end-of-life preferences.

For advisors, this conversation highlights the risks of overlooking these roles and documents—and how making the right referral can add meaningful value across your client base.

Geoffrey Schaefer thought he’d work in finance. The Army had other plans.

After serving as a U.S. infantry officer, Geoffrey eventually found his way back to the industry—now as a fee-only fiduciary wealth advisor and partner at an independent firm serving families, retirees, and small business owners.

In this episode, we talk about starting out in a product-driven environment where the tools can be impressive, but the incentives can quietly shape the planning relationship. Geoffrey explains the long-term impact of production culture, why many clients end up with “an investment guy” instead of a real financial planner, and how the conversation changes when you can say the only people who pay you are the clients themselves.

We also go behind the scenes of running an advisory firm—partner dynamics, dividing responsibilities like compliance and investment management, outsourcing what doesn’t belong on an advisor’s desk, and building a multi-generational planning model that serves parents, kids, and grandkids through major life transitions.

Geoffrey closes with practical advice for newer advisors on humility, mentorship, and why earning the CFP early can make a real difference.

Two weeks before the shutdown, Dan Ryan left a big firm to launch Sinceris Advisory with a simple plan: stay virtual, serve clients deeply, and let great work drive growth. Then COVID hit. Meetings vanished, Zoom became standard, and he had to adapt fast.

Today, the firm manages $226M for 150 families. Dan shares the real story—cancelled deals, “tire kickers,” 80-hour onboarding weeks, and learning that referrals are the only growth channel that truly compounds.

We also talk about operations and hiring (most advisors wait too long), bringing on partner David Wilson in May 2020, and their decision to avoid client handoffs—protecting service quality even if it limits scale.

Dan works across tech equity comp and physician practices, which keeps the work engaging and prevents burnout. His advice to founders: it doesn’t get easier, but autonomy is worth it. Lead with compassion, set boundaries, and price sustainably.

Andy Fisher spent 25 years leading operations at a Fortune 500 company before launching Path Setter Financial, a fee-only RIA built on clarity, transparency, and calm.

In this episode, we talk about his transition from corporate leadership to advisory firm owner—and what engineering discipline taught him about building better financial planning processes.

We discuss how fee structures influence outcomes, why fiduciary advice truly changes the conversation, and how Andy structures discovery to help couples align spending with values. His philosophy is simple: the math is straightforward, but behavior drives results.

We also get into real advisor topics—navigating stock comp, pensions, and early retirement windows; launching an RIA; early operational mistakes; implementing a CRM; outsourcing strategically; and the role peer groups play in momentum and accountability.

If you’re building or refining your firm, this conversation offers practical insight into process design, client communication, and helping families move from analysis to action.

Meet the person you want on your side when policies get real. We sit down with Charles Priest, our new head of Property and Casualty at BC Brokerage, to unpack how a planning‑first mindset turns confusing coverage into clear, confident decisions for households and businesses. Charles brings 16 years of experience helping clients navigate tough choices, manage risk trade‑offs, and pick carriers that stand up when a claim lands—not just when a quote looks cheap.

We start with the basics that most people miss: why umbrella liability is a cornerstone of personal protection, how to right‑size auto and home limits, and the small tweaks that lower friction without raising exposure. For advisors, Charles lays out quick checks that surface red flags fast, from missing umbrellas to deductibles that don’t match cash reserves. Then we move to the commercial side where growth outpaces coverage, and cyber risk demands real defenses. Social engineering and ransomware aren’t fringe threats anymore; they’re everyday business hazards. Charles explains what good cyber insurance should fund—incident response, forensics, notification, restoration, and business interruption—and how to align limits with the data and dollars at stake.

We also dig into timing and markets. The ideal window to shop is roughly 60 days before renewal so we can clarify goals, work with underwriters, and tailor terms. Mid‑term updates can still deliver value with pro‑rated changes. Most of all, we challenge the myth of “apples to apples”: policy wording, exclusions, and claims handling vary widely, and the cheapest option can become the costliest mistake when it matters. If you’re an advisor seeking a smarter P&C partner or a client who wants fewer surprises and better outcomes, this conversation offers a clear path.

If you find this helpful, follow the show, share it with a colleague, and leave a quick review—what P&C question should we tackle next?

Why do some advisors thrive without managing assets? We talk with Kelly Nilsson, founder of Brava Financial, about building a planning-first, advice-only practice that focuses on real-life risk—not just market returns. With a background in insurance, Kelly believes households are more often disrupted by death, disability, or long-term care than by volatility, and her plans are built to handle those moments.

Kelly shares how she launched a virtual RIA, why project-based planning fuels her growth, and how clear scope, flat fees, and objective advice create better client outcomes. “Rent my brain” means no product pressure, no discounts, and clients who are ready to implement.

This episode covers practical ways to identify the right clients, use paid consults as discovery, and design services people actually understand. A must-listen for advisors questioning the AUM default and looking to build a sustainable, planning-led practice.

Imagine walking into tax season already knowing the number.

That’s what happens when a fee-only planner and a proactive CPA plan the year together—before December 31. In this episode, we’re joined by Elliot Vaughn, CFP®, and Ryan Hickel, CPA, to show how they turn scattered inputs like Social Security, IRA distributions, pensions, and equity sales into one coordinated plan.

We break down their joint workflow: fall reviews that forecast income, model marginal tax rates, and evaluate moves like Roth conversions while there’s still time to act. Elliot explains why “everything a planner does ends up on a tax return,” and Ryan translates that into brackets, credits, and phaseouts clients can actually understand.

You’ll hear why the years around retirement are prime for conversions and gain harvesting, and how early-career professionals can build a strong foundation with the right savings order and tax-aware decisions.

We also cover the bigger picture: delivering a family-office experience without massive wealth, coordinating with specialists when needed, and pushing back on popular myths—like calling permanent life insurance a “Roth on steroids.” The theme is simple: fiduciary collaboration and clean process matter more than buzzwords.

If you want fewer April surprises and more confident decisions, this episode shows what a real advisor–CPA partnership looks like. Subscribe, share it with a friend, and leave a review with the tax topic you want covered next.

A simple spreadsheet for his dad sparked a complete career pivot. In this episode, Andy Cole breaks down his move from civil engineering to fee-only financial planning—and how he built a lean, resilient practice while working full time and raising a family. What began as a deep dive into risk-adjusted returns evolved into a planning-first firm serving engineers with a flexible, transparent fee model.

Andy shares the early challenges of running a solo RIA—compliance, invoicing, endless paperwork—and the turning point when he found a corporate RIA structure that gave him real leverage. By outsourcing back-office work while keeping full autonomy, he accelerated growth and regained the joy of advising. We also get into the numbers, including payout grids and the math that helped him reach roughly $200k in revenue with low personal overhead.

We talk niche and pricing strategy, too. Engineers often want DIY portfolio control, so Andy pairs flat-fee planning with optional low AUM. He also offers practical marketing advice: increase your at-bats, stay consistent on LinkedIn, and build offers for a specific audience—not everyone.

Want a founder story that includes spreadsheets, a stint as a roadie, an Atlantic crossing, and a will-signing party that packed the room? Meet Shane Mason of Brooklyn FI — a CPA/CFP who went from Big Four tax to touring life, then teamed up with AJ to build a 20-person advisory firm rooted in transparency, productized service, and genuine hospitality.

We dig into the early days: running a tax practice out of a bar booth, pricing low to get at-bats, and taking weekend prospect meetings to sharpen the offer. Shane explains why he and AJ decided from day one to build an enterprise rather than a lifestyle practice, documenting workflows so every client gets the same quality of service no matter who’s in the seat. That mindset shaped their hiring, retention, and their eventual shift from serving creatives to working with tech employees navigating ISOs, NSOs, RSUs, and liquidity events.

The conversation gets practical fast. Shane shares why most equity compensation issues are really tax issues, why offering refunds can be a reputation-saving move, and how turning estate planning into a social, notarized event helps clients finally take action. We also explore the difference between small giants and scalable firms, the value of serialized advice, and what happens when founders step back from client work to rethink the business. Plus, a look at Gemifi, the fintech platform Brooklyn FI built to help advisors visualize vesting schedules and future balance sheets.

If you’re building or scaling an RIA, this episode is full of hard-won insights on niches, processes, client experience, and leading through growth.

How do you go from knocking on doors in the snow to running a referral-driven, tax-focused retirement firm? Hamilton Brandenburg shares his path from Chick-fil-A’s “my pleasure” culture, to prospecting at Edward Jones, to launching a fee-only practice built around tax-smart retirement planning. A near-lapsing whole life case pushed him toward a model where taxes, decumulation, and clear service rhythms give clients real value they can feel.

Hamilton talks about the habits that mattered early, how they evolved into surge meetings and a proactive review schedule, and why retirees need more than pie charts. They need coordination on withdrawals, Roth conversions, Social Security timing, and account sequencing that keeps lifetime taxes low.

We also get into the chapter where he built a virtual practice from a 46-foot fifth wheel while raising four kids, and how remote work forced cleaner systems and sharper communication. He shares practical advice for advisors going independent and simple ways retirees can evaluate whether an advisor is really planning through taxes.

Krystal shares how witnessing a "don't ask questions" sales culture shaped her ethical approach and how one generous Saturday conversation sparked a lasting referral flywheel.

We also dig into launching with XY Planning Network, how their compliance, registration, and peer support helped her hit the ground running, and the early days of signing her first clients. Krystal talks about finding quality leads, paying it forward, and designing a sustainable life that includes marathon training, CrossFit, and boundaries that protect her energy.

For new planners, she offers a surprising tip: spend time in a wirehouse. You’ll learn the complex products clients bring to the table and how to untangle them with empathy. Then build the model that fits your values.

If this episode helps you see a better way to serve clients, follow the show, share it, and leave a quick review so more planners can find it.

What if you could scale your advisory firm without rushing to hire and manage a full team?

In this episode, we talk with Michelle Wong, founder and CEO of Nifty Advisor Support, about how solo and small RIAs can build lasting capacity through remote support, strong processes, and a culture-first approach.

Michelle shares how Nifty grew from a pre-COVID launch to supporting more than 60 firms today, and how the rise of remote work changed the way advisors handle client service, marketing, and operations. She explains Nifty’s two main ways of working with firms: ongoing support that feels like a dedicated team member, and short project sprints designed to solve specific problems.

We also cover the “Nifty Fit” framework, which focuses on matching both technology and communication style so advisors avoid costly hiring mistakes.

Michelle opens up about the real bottlenecks that hold firms back—piled-up service work, inconsistent follow-up, and operational debt—and how her team helps fix them. She also introduces the Nifty Lab, a community where advisors and ops pros share templates and ideas before committing to ongoing support.

If you’re a fee-only or fee-based RIA thinking about outsourcing, this episode gives you a clear roadmap for what to delegate first, how to measure success, and how to reclaim your time.

How does a fee-only firm grow without losing its purpose? In this episode, we talk with Sean Gillespie, president of Redeployment Wealth Strategies, about the lessons behind raising fees, building the right team, and serving military families with care and consistency.

Sean explains why their first-year planning fee reflects the real work of sorting through insurance, TSP choices, and transition planning, and how they keep ongoing service affordable for younger service members.

One story sums it up well: a client calls mid-PCS, asking if they can buy a beach house near family. Within a minute, Sean knows the answer and the funding source. That’s the value of clear planning—fast decisions, managed risks, and confidence in the next step.

We also discuss why “hire us for returns” is a losing pitch, how RWS uses a passive, factor-based approach, and what it takes to hire and train through SkillBridge. Sean shares how their firm grew by focusing on character over titles and why their biggest competitor isn’t another advisor—it’s Google.

Finally, he explains how they simplified compliance by co-founding Apforia, an SEC-registered umbrella that helps independent firms keep their brand while easing regulatory headaches.

If you care about fair pricing, meaningful planning, and building a business that lasts, this conversation is full of practical lessons you can use.

Austin Preece went from selling insurance to building a thriving fee-only financial planning firm—by doing things differently. He rejected the traditional AUM model in favor of charging 0.5% of net worth, aligning his fees with client outcomes. When he realized a 100% prospect close rate meant his pricing was too low, he raised his fees and built a sustainable practice around clients who truly value his expertise.

Rather than broad marketing, Austin carved out a niche with real estate professionals, using his expertise in 1031 exchanges and Delaware Statutory Trusts to help agents manage feast-or-famine income cycles. From zero clients to now overseeing $40–50 million in assets, his journey is a blueprint for building a values-driven firm—and a must-listen for anyone navigating the future of financial planning.

What happens when someone who used to sell financial technology decides to become a financial advisor? Clark Jeffries, founder of Jeffries Wealth Management, takes us inside his transition from FinTech sales to running his own independent practice.

After five years at Hidden Levers (later acquired by Orion Advisor Tech), Clark worked closely with hundreds of advisory firms and noticed a major gap. High-earning professionals weren’t being well served—many were managing money on their own, sticking with family advisors, or fielding product pitches from old acquaintances. Clark saw an opportunity to create something different.

Making the switch wasn’t without surprises. He quickly realized that while technology is helpful, clients don’t actually care about your tech stack—they care about how you can genuinely help them. Integrations fail, updates cause issues, and advisors often use only a fraction of their tools. What really matters, Clark says, is the human connection.

Instead of adopting a polished, corporate image, Clark chose authenticity. By being himself, he attracts the clients who align with his style and values. He views financial planning as an ongoing process, not a static plan, and believes long-term trust is built on real relationships.

How do you build a financial planning practice that succeeds without losing your values?

Fran Walsh, co-founder of Opulus LLC and one of Investopedia’s Top 100 Advisors, believes the key is authenticity. From a football award that unexpectedly introduced him to his future business partner to launching his firm just before COVID hit, Fran’s path has been anything but straight. His mindset has stayed the same: “The people who never quit and just keep going are going to be inevitably successful.”

At first, Fran didn’t rush to pick a niche. Instead, he worked with a range of clients while building momentum, eventually focusing on high-earning millennials, athletes, and business owners who share his drive for constant improvement. He also made a conscious choice to skip the traditional corporate image: “We wear t-shirts every day. We want clients to see we’re normal people just like them.”

His approach shows that being yourself can strengthen client relationships while building a business you actually enjoy running.

What does it take to build a successful financial planning firm—while living off the grid in a cabin-caboose hybrid?

Ryan Sullivan of Off the Beaten Path Financial did just that. After leaving a career in engineering that lacked the flexibility and impact he wanted, a chance meeting led him to financial planning. Despite industry warnings, he launched his RIA while still working full-time.

He and his wife bought 20 acres in remote Montana, where their home—half log cabin, half 1890s train caboose—is only accessible by snowmobile in winter. Ryan commuted up to four hours a day while building his firm on nights and weekends.

Early growth was slow—until he hired a coach, shifted away from rigid service models, and focused on project-based planning for architects and engineers. His technical mindset became his advantage, and the business took off.

In January 2025, he earned more than in the previous two years combined. Now, he runs his firm fully off-grid, embracing the lifestyle and clients that make it truly off the beaten path.

Matt Zeigler and Ben Tuscai of Sunpoint Investments take a different approach to wealth management. Instead of just managing money, they combine deep financial planning with investment consulting to build real relationships and help clients make smarter decisions.

Their paths into the industry were unique—Matt was a music major, and Ben worked for the Phillies before spending eight years at Vanguard. That experience helps them think more broadly about client needs. At Sunpoint, they helped redesign the firm’s service model to go beyond portfolios and address the full picture of a client’s life.

They work with everyone from young professionals to billion-dollar families, applying the same core principles: track cash flow, build strong balance sheets, plan for life events, and manage risk. For ultra-wealthy families, they focus on education—teaching kids as early as sixth grade to understand money and avoid entitlement.

They call it “garden glove service”—hands-on, practical, and focused on building something meaningful. They also emphasize five types of capital: financial, human, intellectual, social, and wisdom.

Their planning helps clients avoid tax mistakes, close insurance gaps, and navigate big life transitions. As Matt says, they often just “stand between clients and stupid.”

A lot of financial planners don’t actually want to run a business.
They just want to help people.

But when the only way to do that is to launch your own firm… you end up becoming an accidental entrepreneur—juggling compliance, operations, tech, and marketing instead of focusing on clients.

Stephen Fox saw that problem firsthand.

Marine Corps veteran. Financial planner. Firm builder.
And now, the founder of Advice Only—a platform built for planners who want to offer advice without managing assets or selling products.

Instead of taking a percentage of revenue, Advice Only charges a flat fee.
Instead of leaving you to build everything from scratch, it handles the RIA, compliance, and infrastructure.
Instead of forcing you into a traditional model, it gives you space to just be a planner.

It’s not just idealistic—it’s practical.

✅ Lower overhead
✅ Faster path to revenue
✅ Easier compliance
✅ Access to a broader client base

Stephen believes advice-only planning is the future—and after hearing his story, you might agree.

What if financial planning could be simpler—and better?

Guy Penn, founder of Core Planning, joins us to share how building the simplest version of an RIA has led to something powerful: a close-knit community of advisors built on generosity, trust, and support.

At Core, everything starts with one question: “What can we remove to make this better?” Instead of adding layers of complexity, the firm focuses only on what helps clients and advisors. The result? A place where people come first and relationships thrive.

Generosity is the core value. Advisors help each other, share ideas, and grow together—without sacrificing their own unique way of working.

Guy also challenges the idea that experience is everything. He believes new advisors bring fresh insight and asks the questions others overlook. At Core, they’re welcomed and empowered to use the tools that work best for them.

And for those struggling with impostor syndrome? Guy’s advice is simple: “If you act with integrity and are willing to find the answers, this profession needs you.”

What happens when two advisors decide to completely rebuild their firm from the ground up?

In this episode, Tommy Blackburn and John Mason share how they transformed Mason & Associates from a commission-based practice to a thriving fee-only RIA focused on federal employees.

They break down how they made those tough decisions, how they preserved relationships, and why having a partner with complementary strengths made the journey possible.

Their niche-focused marketing—including a podcast and YouTube channel—now attracts exactly the clients they want to serve.

What happens when your lifestyle practice takes off faster than you ever expected?

Andy Panko, founder of Tenon Financial, didn’t set out to build a firm. After leaving the corporate finance world in 2019, his goal was simple: work with 50 clients, enjoy flexibility, and ease into retirement on his own terms.

But within two years, he was at capacity—and suddenly facing a new question: Now what?

In this episode, Andy shares how he navigated that inflection point and grew Tenon Financial without sacrificing the lifestyle he set out to protect. Rather than hiring assistants or junior staff to “scale,” he took a different route—bringing on experienced advisors with decades of prior careers who operate independently with their own client bases. The result is a lean team of three serving more clients without compromising autonomy or quality of life.

Andy opens up about his approach to hiring, compensation, and why he places intentional limits on growth. “I don’t want the business to consume me,” he says. “Since I started Tenon, I’ve never once felt like I had to go to work.”

We also dive into industry-wide tensions around product sales and compensation structures. Andy, who owns an IUL policy himself but regularly calls out misleading marketing, offers a nuanced view on where insurance fits—and where it goes wrong.

If you're a solo advisor wondering what comes next—or just want to hear what it looks like to grow without giving up control—this conversation is a must-listen. As Andy puts it:

“When you take ‘just being about money’ off the table, it’s actually very liberating.”

Taylor Stewart didn’t set out to build software. He created a simple spreadsheet to help with his own planning, and it quickly caught the attention of other advisors. When one offered to buy it, he named a price that felt too high—and they said yes without hesitation. That moment sparked the creation of Income Mapper, and later, the tools that would become the foundation of Partheon, where Taylor now leads financial advice. He also runs his own fee-only firm, Adaroke Wealth.

As a second-generation advisor, Taylor grew up watching his father build a traditional AUM practice. His experience taught him something many advisors miss: we tend to undervalue our own ideas. It also taught him that waiting for clients to show up doesn’t work. After a year of slow growth, he realized the problem was fear—of showing up, of being seen, of failing. So he started sharing. Through podcasts, writing, and social media, he began to attract the right people by leading with value.

Taylor doesn’t measure success by revenue. In his words, “I don’t even know how much my firm makes.” He focuses on the impact—helping people make better financial decisions. Whether through planning or software, that mission drives everything he does. His advice to advisors who feel stuck is simple: “Just go create the problem. You’ll fix it.”

Struggling to connect with clients through video?

Katie Braden, founder of Advisor Video Marketing, says most advisors are overthinking it. With a background in photography and as a CFP, she’s helped advisors use simple, authentic videos to build real connections.

Forget fancy production. Katie once shot a quick 42-second iPhone video in the dark and wind—and it got over 167,000 views. Why? Because people connect with real, not perfect.

She recommends short, personal videos—like 45-60 seconds for follow-ups, birthday messages, or thank-yous. It’s an easy way to show you care.

Katie gets the challenges advisors face and has built a system that uses video throughout the client journey—marketing, onboarding, service, even internal updates. Her 12-week workshop helps you set up, create content, and get confident on camera.

The big takeaway? Video isn’t just about marketing—it’s about building trust. A short, thoughtful video can make a big impression.

Vrishin's Bio:

I am Vrishin Subramaniam (he/him), IAR, CFP® candidate, and Founder of CapitalWe

Originally born and raised in New Delhi, India, I came to the USA when I was 17 to attend college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. A little over a decade later, I have worked as a technology consultant, lived in 7 cities, gotten married to my lovely wife Sharanya, and picked up a liking (plus a license!) for Scuba diving. We have been calling the DC area (Arlington, VA) home for just under a year, although we do spend a considerable time in sunny California!
I want to make financial planning more accessible to more people (especially people on an H1b or GC) while eschewing the suit and tie

In 2014, I graduated college without a job offer lined up, so I moved to the Bay Area in search of a job. Desperate after a couple months of non-stop job searching, I took the first offer I got, which paid a low salary (by Bay Area standards). I found it challenging to cover bills and rent even while being paid a “coveted” bay area tech salary. In order to make ends meet, I quickly became obsessed with optimizing each dollar and eventually with the FIRE movement (Financial Independence / Retire Early). After speaking with friends, family and colleagues who were all struggling with similar challenges, I realized this is a universal problem.

Having learnt about investing, I wanted to find a good advisor who would be able to round out my spreadsheets and was willing to work with young professionals, but found the advisors either had high minimums or were trying to sign me up for sub-par financial products to earn their commissions. I started CapitalWe to relieve financial stress for all young professionals as they transition between various stages of life: school, marriage, home-buying and all other firsts!

Devin's Bio:

Growing up lower middle-class in Pittsburgh, money was always an issue. But I had two things going for me: my immigrant father instilled in me the hustler mentality and my mother always stressed academics. So in middle school I started mini-businesses to make extra cash, trying my best to stay out of trouble, while making straight A’s. In high school I realized I was too soft to make it in the trades, but knew I had a knack for numbers and people. So I decided to focus on my education. Hello, college.

After graduating from Penn State with a finance degree, I went right back to school and studied accounting at Notre Dame. Master’s degree in hand, I kicked off my career at Ernst & Young (auditing), moved over to KPMG (consulting), and eventually jumped to PNC (banking). Over the course of 15 years, I worked with some of the most recognizable names in finance (and logged over 700 Marriott nights).

Now, I’m a full-time husband, father, and CFP® with an eclectic (read: weird) set of interests ranging from football, photography, and Frank Lloyd Wright to languages, Latin music and Leonardo da Vinci. I love traveling overseas, reading five books at once, and creating Spotify playlists.

Kevin's Bio:

Hello! My name is Kevin Lao. I am first and foremost a family man. My amazing wife, Jessica, and I are blessed with three active boys. Tristan came first, and our twins, Julian and Jackson, a short 16 months later. They are my "why," and I do my best to lead by example and pursue my passions in hopes my boys pursue theirs.

After spending my first 12 years in the financial services industry split between two fortune 500 companies, I developed an obsession for helping people plan for retirement. It sounds simple, but many people don't have the systems and processes in place to achieve financial independence. Life gets busy, and all of a sudden you are 10 years away from 60 and unsure if you’re on track.

However, I came to realize the conflicts of interests inherent with the "big firm" mentality didn't align with my personal value system. As a result, I launched Imagine Financial Security as a Flat Fee Financial Planner/Fiduciary, and have the ability to work with clients locally in Jacksonville, FL as well as across the United States virtually.

I am originally from the suburbs of DC, but have lived in the Jacksonville, FL area for almost 8 years. We are fortunate to have family close by as it takes a village with our crew!

When I am not running my business or spending time with my wife and kids, I enjoy "dad-golf," fishing, cooking, reading, researching, writing, teaching and being in the outdoors.

Go Gamecocks! Go DC Sports!

Eric's Bio:

In 2018, after graduating the U.S. Air Force Academy with an Economics degree, I began my professional career as a hospital administrator in the Air Force. As I was sitting in my apartment in Cheyenne, Wyoming after work every day, I quickly realized that this wasn't going to be a career for me. It was a great first job, but wasn’t ultimately my calling and didn’t get me up out of bed every morning. I was captain of a Division I hockey team in college, and I still have that competitive drive that I need to harness into something. I knew that I needed to start a business, I just didn't know what yet.

For the next 9 months, I binged business and entrepreneurship books and researched business ideas. I had a One Note with about 20 different ideas. I was teaching myself to code computer software, trade foreign exchange, and anything else that I could get my hands on.

One book in particular called the $100 Startup by Chris Guillebeau said that you should find something that people naturally come to you for, something that you are passionate about, and something that people will pay for. This was my lightbulb moment. For me, that thing has always been investing and personal finance. I was always interested in the stock market, and many times found myself in conversations giving people finance pointers. I had also seen what the typical financial advisor did for family and friends, and was very frustrated with the lack of transparency, and lack of value for the fees that are paid.

From there on out, I was dead set on building a fee-only financial planning firm to help families align their money with their values. I began building the groundwork for Baskin Financial Planning in early 2019 while getting my MBA, studying for and passing the CFP exam, then finally launching the business in 2021 all while serving on active duty.

Through my time as a financial planner, I have found that the military community is not properly served by one single service and pricing model. Not everyone can afford or needs the help of an ongoing financial planner at all times in their life. To address this problem, I have now gone on to develop specific offerings to best serve the military community and each families’ unique stage in life from younger military members just getting started, to transitioning military members, to Veterans and business owners building life changing wealth.

Andy's Bio:

While studying toward a finance degree at the University of Delaware, I decided to work toward a career helping others with their finances. I didn't quite know what that job would look like, but I figured it must exist. I assumed it would involve helping and educating

In my senior year at Delaware, I interviewed at a few of the large household name financial services companies for roles they called "financial advisor." I assumed those would be the sort of financial planning careers I was thinking of. Unfortunately, I quickly realized those jobs were not about giving financial advice or guidance. Instead, they were just commissioned sales positions to sell the companies' products - life insurance, annuities and mutual funds. I was completely turned off by that and gave up on trying to find a financial planning job. I ended up getting a corporate job at a large insurance company

After graduating college in 2000, I spent the next 19 years working for multiple global insurance, banking and brokerage firms. I worked in functions that involved the creation, risk management, trading, portfolio management and financing of many of the insurance and investment products and strategies used throughout the financial services industry. My roles included pension risk management, investment management, securities financing and investment fund analysis and diligence

Along the way I went back to school - in 2004 I earned a Master of Business Administration degree from Rutgers Business School. I've also taught multiple semesters as an adjunct lecturer for the finance department of Rutgers Business School

In 2016, I had an experience that reignited my desire to do personal financial planning. My mother was transitioning into retirement and was trying to figure out how best to claim her Social Security benefits. After getting different answers from different people - including different answers from within the Social Security Administration itself - I dug in and helped her research the relevant laws and regulations. We ultimately got to the correct answer and she was able to make the best claiming decision for her and her circumstances

At that point, the proverbial light went off for me - helping people make decisions about their retirement finances was what I was supposed to be doing with my life. Since that point in 2016, I committed myself to getting educated on all things related to financial planning for retirement. In that journey, I obtained the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ("CFP®") designation, the Retirement Income Certified Professional® ("RICP®") designation and the IRS Enrolled Agent ("EA") license

In 2019, I left the institutional investment and banking world to launch Tenon Financial. I also started a separate tax return preparation and filing company, Tenon Tax Preparation. And I remain committed to sharing knowledge and helping educate others

Patricia's Bio:

In 2009 I founded Game Theory Academy, a nonprofit that teaches financial skills to teenagers through the lens of strategic decision-making. My favorite part of that work has been guiding young people to set their own goals outside of what their grownups want for them and then align their day-to-day decisions with those goals. I bring that same strategic curiosity to financial planning. Prior to Game Theory Academy, I was CFO of a news media organization, Pacific News Service/New America Media. I hold an MBA from Yale and a BA in Political Science from UC Berkeley. I hold a Series 65 securities license and completed the certificate in Personal Financial Planning at UC Berkeley Extension. I have a lifelong interest in economics and am excited to do the heavy lifting of financial planning so people can focus on what they love to do. As the founder and CEO of Wealthtender, I'm proud of our growing impact in helping thousands of Americans each month make more informed and educated decisions, whether hiring a financial advisor or managing money on their own.

Since founding the company in 2019, Wealthtender has become an industry-leading digital marketing platform providing hundreds of financial advisors with impactful benefits to rank higher in search engines, build authority online, and accelerate the growth of their business.

We also know regulatory change creates opportunities for marketplace disruption. After 60 years of prohibition, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) changed its rules, permitting financial advisors to solicit and promote client testimonials in their marketing activities. With thousands of hours spent evaluating all aspects of the new SEC Marketing Rule and adapting our platform accordingly, Wealthtender launched the first SEC-compliant financial advisor online review platform.

Wealthtender reaches tens of thousands of people each month who visit wealthtender.com, follow us on social media, and view our content syndicated nationally on sites like MSN.com, Associated Press affiliates, and popular personal finance websites.

Our story is just getting started. I'm grateful for the financial advisors in our community, friends throughout the industry, and consumers we hear from each month who inspire us to reinvest in our business, so we can continue in our mission to help millions of Americans enjoy life more with less money stress.

Nick's Bio:

Nick Nauta has been practicing financial planning since moving to the Lansing area in 2006. After studying Financial Management and Economics at Northern Michigan University, Nick ventured into the financial planning industry. Having a young daughter and wife, Nick wanted to stay in Michigan. At the time he graduated, one of the few jobs available for a finance major was as a financial advisor.

Nick struggled through his first few years in the profession. He relates the struggle to his early memories of money living in Spring Lake, Michigan. One of the things he learned about money when he was growing up was the people who seemed to have the most of it, weren’t inherently happier than those who didn’t. When he started in the financial advising industry, the profession appeared to be all about making money, something he didn’t hold in high esteem.

Some years later, around the time his son was born, Nick finally started to figure out his place in the financial planning world. He was challenged to answer the question of why he did what he did. Thinking back on his early memories of money, he concluded he was in the financial planning profession to help people realize their life goals.

Nick enjoys giving back to the community as well as his profession. He is currently the past president of the Davies Project, Treasurer of Loaves and Fishes homeless shelter, President of Delta-side business association, and Secretary of Kiwanis of Delta Township. Nick is a Certified Financial Planner™, Chartered Life Underwriter™, Registered Life Planner™, board member of the Greater Lansing Estate Planning Council, and a member of the following professional associations:

National Association of Personal Financial Advisors (NAPFA)

Financial Planning Association (FPA)

Fee-Only Network

Jeff's Bio:

While my interest in personal finance dates back to grade school “stock picking” assignments and investment fundamentals senior projects in high school, my career helping individual investors began in 2003. After spending time managing a branch office for a large online brokerage firm, I joined one of the nation's largest retirement plan providers as an advisor providing comprehensive financial planning advice for high net worth clients.

I received a bachelor's degree in finance and an MBA both from the University of Central Florida. In 2016 I completed the requirements to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation. Over time I have gained nearly two decades of experience evaluating investments, retirement plans, insurance offerings, and many of the complicated elements of your financial life you may be struggling with. More recently in 2021, I added the Certified Student Loan ProfessionalTM designation to gain the knowledge to provide more complete planning around student loans within a client's overall financial plan.

I always had a vision for a firm dedicated to helping people become financially independent, not just helping those who are already there. The decisions we make early in our financial lives, whether they are good or bad, will compound positively or negatively for decades into the future. In 2020 I founded Create Wealth Financial Planning to help the individuals and families I work with make positive financial decisions while they still have time to make a dramatic impact.

In between client meetings I like to keep a clear head playing piano - usually classical or rock songs, or weightlifting out in the garage and getting myself ready to compete some day. I also enjoy working on my public speaking as a member of the Deerwood Toastmasters of Jacksonville, FL. On a nice morning you might catch me hacking up the golf course. I married my wonderful wife Michele in 2007 after we met in college a few years earlier. We live in Saint Johns, Florida raising our two amazing daughters and we love spending time with family and friends, a quick trip to St. Augustine or to the beach, and cheering on our favorite sports teams.

Brett's Bio:

I’m a born and raised Buffalonian, and the founder of Eudaimonia Wealth.

I’ve spent the majority of my career working for a large wealth management firm. Over time, I realized the focus was more on how to make the firm more money, not how to make a greater difference in the lives of the families served. I knew there was a better way.

In 2019, I chose to leave the brokerage world and establish Eudaimonia Wealth. As an independent, fee-only registered investment advisor, I'm proud to provide advice 100% of the time under the fiduciary standard; a legal requirement to always put the interests of my clients first.

I’m passionate about the work I do and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. I hold the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ designation, and am a member of the following professional organizations:

  • CFP Board
  • National Association of Personal Financial Planners (NAPFA)
  • Financial Planning Association (FPA)
  • XY Planning Network
  • Fee-Only Network

I grew up in Kenmore, attended Canisius College, and live in the Elmwood Village alongside my wife, Erin. I currently serve on the board of directors for Habitat for Humanity Buffalo, the board of directors for the Financial Planning Association of WNY, and enjoy staying actively involved in the many things that make Buffalo great.

On the personal side, I'm a Buffalo sports enthusiast, have played ice hockey and soccer for most of my life, and love the shift in perspective that traveling provides. Here are a few fun facts about me that you might not find elsewhere!

Matt's Bio:

I spent over 10 years helping corporations, hedge funds and institutional investors squeeze every last dollar out of their investments before I finally asked myself: what is most important in life, and what's keeping me from getting there?

So, what's important to me:  spending time with my family, pursuing a career I'm passionate about and running a business that allows me to partner with like-minded individuals.

My dad passed away at age 58 and I constantly remind myself that life is short, and I better not regret how I live it. I am now lucky enough to say I work in a field that brings me happiness and fosters my personal values.

A perfectionist by nature and self-proclaimed finance/tax nerd, I genuinely love helping individuals simplify their financial lives so they too can focus on what's most important to them.

Sean's Bio:

I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1992 and served in the Navy for twenty years as a surface warfare officer. My education in financial planning began in the spring of 1994 when a Naval Academy classmate who cared enough about my wife and me to not take no for an answer told us, “We’re going to dinner Wednesday night.” Tom routinely chose great restaurants, so we showed up at the appointed place and time without discussion or complaint.

Dinner was unremarkable. Fixed menu rubber chicken fare. Perfectly adequate, just not the over-the-top good stuff we were used to Tom picking out. But the seminar given during dessert changed our lives. In less than sixty minutes, we were shown the simple outline of a financial plan to get us moving in a sustainable fashion toward a comfortable retirement. And afterward, Tom introduced us to the man who would be our agent for twenty years. Dave helped put us on our path to financial independence in 1994 and helped us make the adjustments along the way to keep us on it. And when I retired after twenty years of Navy service, he mentored me into the financial services business.

Among dozens of things Dave taught me over twenty years, two of them were critically important. One of them was the sort of product knowledge that got me credentialed and sufficiently competent to help others identify their own goals for financial independence. Far more important was the spirit of service he exemplified every day. Lots of people talk the “client always comes first” talk. Dave walked it, being just as candid with us when we were on track as when he thought we were getting ready to make a mistake. And we always felt his recommendations were in our best interests. It wasn’t just that his interests were secondary. They didn’t enter into the conversation at all. It was in that spirit that I got licensed in 2013 to help families plan for their own sustainable financial futures.

My wife Jennifer and I have been married since 1992. When I retired, we decided to put down roots in Chesapeake Virginia, in the community where we have owned a home since 2001 and, when not stationed overseas, raised our three daughters.

Ann's Bio:

I’m also a CFP® and owner of Independent Progressive Advisors, a fee-only Registered Investment Advisor in Portland OR, author of The College Financial Lady blog (thecollegefinanciallady.com). My blog has approximately 15,000 subscribers in various media (blog, Facebook). In addition, I’m regularly cited in national media (New York Times, US News & World Report) on the subject of college planning. I earned a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and am a member of Phi Beta Kappa and of NAPFA, the leading association of fee-only financial advisors.

Early in my career as an advisor, I noticed that clients had so many questions about college—and very few advisors were willing to tackle those questions. Since I kept hearing the same questions again and again (and wanted the answers myself), I started writing down answers in blog format, and The College Financial Lady was born. After seven years, I have developed a wealth of content on this topic through research, interaction with readers, and personal experience. Two years ago, I had an opportunity to put my knowledge to the test when the time came for my own children to apply to college.

John's Bio:

“John is the only financial advisor you’ll ever meet who’s managed over $3 billion and a sushi kitchen.”That’s what it says on my public relations bio at least, and I’d bet it’s true. My path to financial planning was neither straightforward nor easy. That winding road gave me a unique and valuable perspective on investing and life.

After working through the crucible of the 2008/9 financial crisis, I decided to take a page from Monty Python... “And Now for Something Completely Different.” In 2010 I opened Rold Rite Sushi, a wholesaler of fresh sushi and other Asian foods to the trade. I grew the business until I sold it in 2015 to take on the most important job of my life to date, as a stay-at-home dad.

When my son entered school, I knew I wanted to return to finance. This time I have a selfless desire to help people that I learned by working in the food business. Food service workers want to make people feel better. I want to share knowledge and wisdom that can help folks better prepare for the future. I want my clients to feel better and worry less about their future because they have a plan for it.

I spent decades on Wall Street. I traded and designed some of the most complex bonds ever seen. Then I managed massive portfolios for large institutions. I learned two important lessons from that time.

  • First, the more complex the investment, the greater its costs.
  • Second, the greater its costs, the worse it performs.

For investors, simple is better than complex. Einstein said, “Everything should be made as simple as possible, but not simpler.” My mission is to give you more simplicity and less complexity – in both investing and in life.

Kaylin's Bio:

When my dad died his life insurance policy was supposed to name my sister and me as the beneficiaries according to his divorce agreement with my mom. It turned out he had changed the beneficiary to his new wife. I was a teenager, and this was my first time learning that there’s no one out there making sure people stick to their legal agreements. It seemed bizarre to me that the only mechanism to enforce an agreement is to pursue someone legally after they’ve broken it. Surely lots of people don’t even mean to break their agreements, right?

When my husband and I got married we first signed a prenuptial agreement. By that point I’d already learned that it was up to us to make sure we upheld the terms of our own agreement. We didn’t have an authority figure reminding us how to title our accounts and property, paying attention to which accounts should receive what type of income deposits, or making sure we maintain life insurance, as we’d agreed to do. But I started thinking: wouldn’t it be nice if we did?

Financial advisors are in a unique position to help families proactively keep family law out of their family’s choices.

Whether it’s for a divorce or a marriage, couples don’t enter into marital agreements lightly. This is why I care about helping couples uphold the agreements they’ve made all the while helping them plan confidently for their future together.

Meg's Bio:

"I worked in the tech industry straight out of college. Through the first Dot Com Boom. Aaaaand through the crash. When I got laid off. Fun times.

In my 30s, I got bored with my work in tech, and I changed careers into financial planning. I also got married, had two babies, moved cross-country twice, went back to school for a graduate degree, bought my first home, decided (I mean, not unilaterally) to have my husband retire from tech and become a stay-at-home dad, and started a business (this one!).

I don’t know if I’d have had the guts to do all of that without the money and flexibility my husband and I both got from the tech industry. Which is why I love working with women in their early to mid career in the tech industry.

It’s such an exciting time of life. And the opportunities are almost boundless. But it’s so stressful. And oh my goodness, what do you mean “estimated taxes”?!

I’ve learned that if we are intentional and if we do the work, our opportunities in the tech industry can help us build that fulfilling life we all crave.

What else about me?

Wellllll, I grew up in Newport News, Virginia. I went to Wellesley College in Massachusetts, where I majored in Economics, gained 10 pounds (unlimited Fruit Loops? whut?!), and learned to banish writer’s block. I moved to the Bay Area in 1998 and worked as a technical writer for 10 years in the San Francisco Bay Area, mostly in the software-security sector. ‘Tis also, it should be noted, where I met my husband. We both worked on the Engineering team at a small startup.

After I changed careers, I got my Master’s of Science in Financial Planning from Golden Gate University. I then worked for fee-only Registered Investment Advisors, back in Tidewater Virginia.

In search of a home better suited to us, my husband, my two daughters, and I moved to Bellingham, WA. Julia the Dog—a sweet girl, if not technically a good girl—joined us a couple years later.

So much of what makes me happy—hiking, biking, cooking, yoga, kale, and ancient minivans missing hubcaps—are part of the fabric of life here. For those rare times when I have a stretch of silence and time, I love reading books about European royal history, sci-fi/fantasy, and Anything Russia.

I am a Certified Financial Planner™ professional, a Registered Life Planner™ and a member of the XY Planning Network and the Financial Planning Association."

Daniel's Bio

Hello, I’m Daniel – husband to Anna, widower to Sarah, Air Force veteran, business owner, writer, speaker, CFP® Professional, financial planner, and Christ-follower. I’m the founder of Wise Stewardship Financial Planning where we offer fee-only, fiduciary financial planning and investment advice with a special focus on young widows and widowers as well as servicemembers and their families.

Grief changes everything. I know that all too well from personal experience as I became a widower at 31 and before that, father to 3 children in heaven. My passion and purpose now is to take what I’ve learned from those experiences combined with financial planning and advice to be a help to you in your own unique grief journey. Wise Stewardship works together with you to help gain stability in your current financial situation, prioritize next steps, and walk with you into a new and different future.

Here’s the rest of my story and why I became a financial planner. I’ve always been interested in money since I was a little kid, including out-bidding my siblings for chores-for-hire, to providing loans to my siblings and friends when they had spent all their money and diligently saving my allowance for future goals. Over time this evolved into reading the stock pages in the newspaper as a young teenager and then choosing to major in economics in college. After completing Air Force ROTC at Purdue University, I commissioned as an officer into the Air Force in 2009 but continued my personal interest into personal finances, investing, and all things money-related.

In my college years and early 20s, I read hundreds of books and spent thousands of hours studying financial planning topics. I also had the opportunity to be a volunteer financial counselor during many of the years when I was on active duty in addition to helping and educating family and friends over the years. Thanks to countless help along the way, I learned more about the financial services industry and found my way to fee-only, fiduciary financial planning. It was through these experiences that sparked my passion and helped me realize what I wanted to do whenever I decided to leave the military!

As an officer on active duty for almost 9 years, along with a brother, sister, and brother-in-law in the military, I experienced firsthand the benefits and challenges that military life can have on all aspects of life especially finances. Frequent changes like TDY’s, deployments, and PCS’s add unique potential opportunities and obstacles to meeting goals and dreams. Add in the often disparate and sometimes confusing military pay, benefits, scattered military benefits and discounts, and countless people offering advice or services, and there is often a lack of clarity on how best to optimize all of these to best meet goals.

Travis's Bio:

Hi! I’m Travis, A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and the founder of Kinetix Financial Planning. I believe money is a tool that can unlock the optionality of life. My goals are to help optimize your cash flow, grow wealth, and pay less money to Uncle Sam through dynamic financial planning and investment management.

Prior to my career as a financial planner, I graduated with a business degree from the University of North Texas in Denton, Texas. I began my professional career at a large brokerage firm where I learned the ins and outs of the financial markets. During this time I was able to gain valuable experience in financial markets, risk management, and personal finance. I then found my path working as a wealth manager for a small financial firm serving pre-retirees and retirees which included selling insurance to clients. I realized that insurance sales mixed with financial planning created a huge conflict of interest! I made the decision to become a fee-only financial planner in order to give my clients real financial advice with limited conflicts of interest.

On a personal note, I live in the Dallas/ Fort Worth area but grew up a small-town kid in central Texas. When I am not helping my clients, I enjoy the outdoors, traveling, reading, or listening to the next queued up podcast. In addition, I am a supporter of the professional sports teams in the Dallas/Fort Worth area. An avid outdoorsman – hunting, fishing, hiking, skiing, and everything in between. I have a husky that keeps me busy and active named Koda. Who is also the CEO (see below). My favorite getaway is Montana where I have family!

Jim's Bio:

Hi, I’m Jim Crider— a husband, dad, and CEO of Intentional Living FP.

Prior to starting Intentional Living FP, I worked primarily with the standard clients of most wealth management firms— financially successful families seeking guidance with the wealth they’ve accumulated over decades.  While I cherish each client I’ve served,  I came to find the clients I enjoy most: families that desire to achieve early financial independence for the sake of spending significant time with the people they care about, doing the things they enjoy.

I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, and the message I tell every client I work with is that my role is to guide— to live where my clients’ lives and money intersect so they can live the life they want to live. The money is simply a tool, a resource that is there to help you live the life you want.

When I’m not engaged in a conversation with people about life, priorities, and doing what is important to them, I can be found chasing around my kids, Atticus, Asher, & Arlo, spending time with my wife, Kendra, or out on an adventure.

Nick's Bio:

I’m a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER ™ based in Costa Mesa, California. I love financial planning and truly nerd out over it. I decided to create Swell Financial because I believe a financial planning firm ultimately succeeds by putting clients first. I also firmly believe in the concept of ABUNDANCE.  This notion that money is simply a tool that we are called to steward in order to enrich our lives and the lives of those around us. Abundance calls us to disregard the mindset of greed and scarcity and instead believe in the concept of always having enough, being generous, and blessing others. It’s my mission to help people improve their finances and turn their dreams into reality.

Outside of the office, you can find me surfing, tirelessly searching for the best local restaurant in town on Yelp, or maximizing a 3-day travel weekend with my wife, Kristin.  Full disclosure, if you see me on my phone, I’m more than likely scrolling through dog videos on Instagram as Kristin and I dream about one-day being dog parents in the not too distant future.

Tyler's Bio:

Why I chose financial planning : It brings me great satisfaction helping the people I work with solve the problems that worry them the most. Aside from the head knowledge and experience required on my part, taking time to listen, organize, and plan in collaboration is equally important. The communication portion of my work is very fulfilling to me, and it has led to many enduring relationships that I cherish. In the end, it is the peace of mind that my clients possess that leads me to continue in this work.

What I believe : I believe people are their own best financial advocates, even if they need help from planners like me. To that end, I give all of my knowledge to the people I work with so that they are more and more empowered to advocate for themselves. When I am needed less, that is a win, that is the best outcome.

When I’m not working you’ll find me spending time doing volunteer work in the community, and getting out into nature with my wife and our young son.

Phil's Bio:

My earliest memories of being exposed to the stock market are drawn from experiences with both of my grandfathers. As immigrants without any formal education, investing was a way for them to partake of the American dream and grow their limited but hard-earned wealth. I have memories of being at my grandparents’ home on a Friday night and watching Louis Rukeyser’s “Wall Street Week” on public television in the 1980s. Occasionally, I would even receive a share or two of stock for my birthday and with that, my passion for investing and the capital markets was born.

After college graduation, I went to work on the floor of the exchange and before long, I scraped up a little money and leased a membership at the Chicago Board of Trade. At that time, the 30-Year Treasury Bond pit was the largest, most active futures contract in the world. That’s where my journey began. While personally trading a thousand contracts a day at times, I saw firsthand how devastating a lack of discipline and planning can be to your financial health.

After a series of business opportunities, I was offered a wealth management position with the Wall Street firms Morgan Stanley and later at JP Morgan. The training and experience at the big firms was great but with their emphasis on selling financial products, I became frustrated. My compensation was largely based on what I sold, not on how I advised regarding wealth accumulation, retirement or tax planning. I had learned years ago from my father, a CPA with his own practice, that relationships are your most valuable asset. My father, in fact, has served some clients and their families for over 50 years- and that is not an accident.

My firm, Breakout Private Wealth, was founded on that principle.

Everything begins and ends with my family. My boys, Andrew and Blake, now teenagers, have taught me more about life than any book or designation. Our time together at the rink, on the field or just at home challenges me to continue to be a better version of myself. My wife Jami, who had no idea that a blind date at the Chicago Blackhawks game twenty plus years ago would turn into a lifetime of hockey rinks and a garage full of sporting equipment, keeps us all on track.

MAX PASHMAN, CFP®

FINANCIAL PLANNER

Your priorities should be addressed by what's best for your needs rather than someone else's sales quota. Unfortunately, the traditional business model in the financial industry has failed to recognize this. Rather than jumping right into a client-facing role, Max decided to invest his time learning more about the financial sector. He worked for several successful teams that guided him towards the appropriate steps towards understanding the financial planning process over time. During his training, he assisted hundreds of households to get them closer to their financial goals and obtained his Series 7, 66, and life + health licenses.

By the time he gained the appropriate knowledge, he had started building his book of business and established a successful online presence to push financial education for his followers. While advising clients at One Wealth Management, Max had begun to understand how he truly wanted to create the best financial planning for his clients. He realized to serve his existing and upcoming clients better required transforming his business into an actual fiduciary model. After obtaining his CFP designation, he founded Pashman Financial as a fee-only company built on that promise.

Leland's Bio:

Hey there, I’m Leland!

I am passionate about building relationships and coaching people. It has been said that personal finance is more personal than finance. I find that true. When working with someone’s finances, I don’t often hear them talk about their investment returns right off the bat. Oftentimes I first hear them talk about the things they care about most in life like their family, their dreams, their fears, their stresses, etc.

I believe finances are a tool in our lives that can cause one of two things; anxiety or confidence. I am passionate about helping individuals and families foster confidence and an abundance mindset around their life goals.

After many years working in the insurance and broker-dealer world, I grew tired of transactional relationships. I was working to do financial planning, but It was more product sales than relationships. That is where PeaceLink Financial Planning LLC came in.

I founded PLFP to make a real difference in people’s lives. Through a focus on the financial planning process and building relationships, I am able to understand my clients and what they desire in life. This allows me to tailor advice in a way to maximize the resources at their disposal and help them develop the life that they long for both now and in the future.

As a fee-only CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ ,I have the privilege of serving my clients nationwide to experience the life that they desire. Being “fee-only” means my only source of income is directly from my clients. I don’t get paid through hidden fees or commissions for selling products. This helps minimize the conflicts of interest in our relationship and puts us on the “same side of the table” to achieve your goals.

When I am not working with my clients, you can find me spending time with my family (my wife, Lindy, our son, Levi, and our pup, Sutton) being with our family and friends, playing pickleball, or doing anything that involves water (swimming, surfing, boating).

Justin's Bio:

I founded Assist FP to help online fitness coaches and fitness entrepreneurs navigate the financial challenges associated with being a business owner.

The real me.. (keep scrolling for the professional version)

In my free time, I love to spend time with my fiancée, family, and friends. I’m usually in a gym or somewhere by the water during the summer (I hibernate during the winter). I love to read business and personal growth books, listen to podcasts, binge documentaries, or watch Boston sports during my downtime.

My fiancée is a travel nurse, so we currently bounce around the United States every 13 weeks.

I believe that life is too short to take it seriously all the time, so I try to inject humor often. A little laughter goes a long way.

Why did I become a financial planner?

I got my first job at the age of 17 while my peers focused on school. I grew up in a lower middle-class family until my father was disabled in his early 30’s which seemed to bring harder times. My parents did the best to provide for our family and I’m forever grateful for all they have done for me. I never went without the necessities. Rent was paid, lights were on, and food was always on the table.

After college, life gave me a crash course on personal financial planning. I didn’t know what the stock market was until I was 22 years old. I had to learn everything they don’t teach you in school. That led me down a path of taking control of my own financial life, and I fell in love with it, so I decided to go back to school to learn how to help others take control of their financial lives too!

Why did I start my own firm?

“Millennials want to be seen and heard by the financial planning profession.”

As a sophomore in college, I received a phone call that my mother had been diagnosed with Stage 4 lung cancer. She passed away 6 months after her diagnosis (on the day before her health insurance lapsed!!) at the young age of 40. I had to grow up a lot quicker than many of my peers, and I decided early on that I was going to be very intentional with how I built my life.

Like many of you, I have always had the entrepreneurial itch. My first entrepreneurial endeavor was the classic lemonade stand story. I grew up in a neighborhood with an outdoor basketball court, and during the summer they had men’s league games. I saw an opportunity and convinced my mom to let me set up a Gatorade stand next to the courts and started selling.

I knew from day 1 of pursuing the journey of becoming a financial planner that I wanted to create my own business that was different from any other financial planning firm you’ve seen.

Let’s shake up the traditional model of the financial industry together.

Professional..

Certified Financial Planner™ Professional

Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning, Kansas State University

I decided to pursue my interest in personal finance a few years after receiving a Bachelors of Science in Sports Management from the State University of New York at Cortland. I was living in Manhattan, Kansas (the Little Apple) at the time and I decided to enroll in the Personal Financial Planning program at Kansas State University.

In 2016, I completed the education requirement of the CFP® certification and entered the profession at a small fee-only firm on Cape Cod, MA. During that time, I became a CFP® Professional after fulfilling all of the necessary requirements. In December 2019, I graduated from K-State with a Master of Science in Personal Financial Planning (MSPFP).

At some point, I will probably add more designations and add to the alphabet soup after my name.

Tim Woodward Bio:

I am a number-cruncher to the core. I strongly believe that a data driven approach to wealth building is the key to helping people understand how even small decisions can significantly impact financial goals.

I help simplify financial decision-making by letting the data do the talking and by applying my engineering brain to interpret numbers and translate what they’re saying into plain, simple, English.

I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and joined the industry following a successful “first” career in engineering. I believe in the value of wealth building for all families and the positive impact that good stewardship has on yourself, your marriage, your family and your community.

I have always had a passion for helping others, and now I'm fortunate to help blended families navigate these same complexities that we have experienced on our blended family journey.

I have a heart for marriage, for families and blended families who desire great relationships combined with financial freedom. I love to spend time with my wife Alexis and our boys Conner & Christian. You will often find us outdoors exploring new parks, hiking, biking, camping or hanging out by the pool.

Alexis Woodward Bio:

As a kid, I loved the idea of saving towards a goal. Before I was old enough to have a job, I was running around my neighborhood trying to see how many lawns I could mow, which was pretty unusual for a girl in middle school.

I have always had a passion for Finance and Entrepreneurship, from mowing lawns to later begging my grandma to let me attend her financial planning meetings with her advisor. So if someone would have told the younger version of me that I would eventually be a financial planner, I wouldn't have been surprised. Now if someone had said that I was going to marry a man with 2 kids, I would have definitely looked at them like they were crazy!

Fast forward to today, I am a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, wife to my very best friend, stepmom, Believer and Co-Founder of Blend Wealth. I have a strong passion for marriage and a heart for blended families. I love being a family that serves families. We make a great team as Tim loves to crunch the numbers and I love to dig deep into the relational and emotional side of money.

Tim and I are fortunate enough to understand the benefits of having our financial life in order, and we want to help others do the same! Diving deep into our financial situation has brought more organization in our lives, stability in our marriage and more freedom in all areas of our life.
