The War Beneath the War
James 4:1-10

In this passage, we explore "the war beneath the war"—how our deepest internal desires and idols drive external conflict and surface in our relationships. Rather than letting worldly pursuits control us, James calls us to embrace true repentance, dethrone our idols, and draw near to God. Jesus offers the ultimate rest for your soul and provides more grace to transform your heart from the inside out.

Wisdom Through Conflict
James 3:13-18

In this passage, we explore the distinct contrast between earthly wisdom—fueled by selfish ambition and jealousy—and heavenly wisdom, which is rooted in the fear of the Lord. Discover how godly wisdom empowers us to be peacemakers who choose gentleness, mercy, and sincere listening over winning arguments.

  • Wisdom is showing meekness not retaliation.
  • Wisdom is only as pure as the source, and pure wisdom comes from God alone.
  • Godly wisdom doesn’t win arguments- it builds peace, restores hearts, and ultimately reflects Christ.

Disability Sunday
Psalm 139:13-16

While our culture often measures a person's worth by their productivity, performance, or ability, the Gospel reminds us that our true value comes solely from whose image we bear. We are not mass-produced; we are carefully handcrafted by God. In this sermon, we host a panel discussion with two of our church families sharing their personal journeys, struggles, and joys of raising children with special needs. We learn how to move beyond mere accommodation and truly become a church family where everyone is genuinely included and welcomed.

Real Faith
James 2:14-26

What does authentic faith actually look like? In this passage, we explore the difference between a faith that simply talks and a faith that takes action. While salvation is completely by grace through faith in Jesus alone, true saving faith will always change how we live and serve those around us.

James’ 3 Faith Categories

  • Dead Faith: All lip service with no lifestyle change.
  • Demonic Faith: Having theological information without life transformation.
  • Dynamic Faith: Genuine internal devotion that naturally translates into loving and serving others.

Faith Under Pressure
James 1:1-12

In this passage, we explore how true faith acts and endures when life gets difficult. While trials are unexpected and painful, James challenges believers to shift their mindset and find joy in knowing that these hardships are being used by a sovereign God to produce endurance and Christian maturity. Rather than simply praying for a quick fix to our circumstances, we are encouraged to ask God faithfully for His wisdom so we can understand His greater purpose through our pain.

  • Rejoice in Your Trials
  • Trials & adversity are the path to Christian maturity

What Do These Stones Mean to You?
Joshua 3-4

In this passage, we look at how radical obedience and personal consecration pave the way for God to do the impossible in our lives today. You’ll see how this Old Testament miracle points straight to Jesus, our true and better Ark, who stepped into the waters of judgment so we could walk through on dry ground.

  • Obedience to God leads to deliverance and freedom
  • Preparation precedes provision

The Anointing of David
1 Samuel 16:1-13

In this passage we encounter the story of God choosing David and anointing him as the next king of Israel. It’s a surprising and somewhat unexpected story as David was the least likely candidate to be chosen. He was actually quite ordinary, yet God chose him and set him apart to accomplish the extraordinary for God’s purpose.

  • When we pursue our own glory above God’s glory we’re destined for destruction.
  • Trusting God’s way instead of relying on our own way leads to a much better outcome every single time.
  • God often uses the ordinary to accomplish the extraordinary.

Daniel and the Lion’s Den

Daniel’s story is full of risk, courage, and standing up for what’s right under immense cultural pressure. He trusted God, lived by faith, and left the outcome to God.
Like Daniel, Jesus was thrown to the lions, even though He didn’t deserve it. But unlike Daniel, God would not protect His Son from the den. Jesus allowed Himself to be crushed on our behalf. Daniel’s story points to Jesus who died in our place.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego
Daniel 3

The Old Testament reveals one clear story: God loves you, and He’ll do anything to save you. What we see from Genesis to Revelation is a God who steps into the fire on our behalf, to rescue us. And that’s the headline of this story today. The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is one of the most inspiring and relevant accounts in all of the Bible, and it points directly to Jesus.
These stories don’t provide heroes that we try to be but point to a Savior who we desperately need.

Let Mercy Lead
Galatians 6:1-10

Living by grace doesn’t mean freedom to live for yourself but freedom to live for God. Keeping in step with the Spirit means living by the Spirit's power. In this passage, Paul shifts gears and talks about what this looks like in community! He is going to show us that you can’t do this on your own. We need each other, which means we need accountability and expectations, but we also need help, and we need mercy.

Characteristics of a merciful church:

  • They restore fallen brethren
  • They relieve heavy burdens
  • They reject arrogant boasting
  • They relish God’s business
  • They reward good leaders
  • They refuse to give up

In this passage, Paul encourages us to walk by the Spirit. Walk by the Spirit, and you’ll have the fruit of the Spirit. Walk in the flesh, and that rotten fruit will come out. The world’s way and our fleshly desires offer hollow promises. We enjoy grace by keeping in step with the Spirit. By obeying God’s way and following His Spirit.

Slavery versus Sonship
Galatians 4:8-31

You can be out of spiritual slavery, but still have slavery in your reflexes.
In this passage, Paul is reminding us that we are not slaves! We are adopted, wanted, and forever in the family of God. Slaves obey out of fear. Sons obey out of belonging.
Many of us today fall into legalism by treating Christian obedience as a means to earn God’s favor, rather than a grateful response to grace already received. What would it look like for you to stop earning God’s approval and start resting in it?

John 15:9-17

We love a lot of things, but there is only one love that is so transformative and worth abiding in. It’s the love of Jesus.

  • Obedience is how to remain in Christ’s love.
  • Obedience leads to joy, not misery.
  • Obedience is tested by how you love others.

The Gospel
Galatians 4:1-7

We are free spiritually, but we so often circle back to spiritual slavery by trying to secure our own security. But we were not saved by our righteousness, nor do we keep our salvation by doing good. We’re saved because Jesus stepped onto the cross, in our place, died the death we should have died, so that we can have His life!
In this passage, we see that God wants a personal relationship with us. He’s our Dad. That it’s not about standing at attention and reciting the right words, but that this is a relationship with a loving Dad who wants us to know Him.

  • We were slaves to sin
  • The Father sent the Son to redeem and adopt us
  • Our relationship with God is close and personal

It’s Not What You Think
Galatians 2:15—3:1-9

In this passage, Paul drives home that you’re not saved by your own effort, but through faith in Jesus Christ. Not only are you initially saved by faith… You’re continually saved by faith!
Christians often think that we’re saved by the gospel, but then we grow by our own efforts. But we are not just saved by the gospel. We grow by applying the gospel to every part of life.

We could never save ourselves. So God the Father sent His Son to save us from our sin, pay the penalty we could never pay,and rise again from death. However, Jesus didn’t save you just to get you to heaven—He saved you to make disciples and change the world, for His glory.

Paul’s message in Galatians is one centered on the grace of Jesus, not the works of man. Our salvation and purpose are given and sustained by Jesus. Are We There Yet?
Numbers 13-14

God delivered His people over and over in dramatic and only-God-could-do-it ways. Then they face a trial, and all seems lost. All of a sudden, they began to see themselves as grasshoppers to be stepped on instead of seeing themselves as God’s chosen people. The people of Israel idolized the Promised Land over God Himself. Idols cannot simply be removed. They need to be replaced. By what? By Jesus taking the burden of sin and shame from you, and by looking to Him for ultimate satisfaction, joy, fulfillment, identity, and more.

Stand Firm, Go Forward
Exodus 14:10-14

God had shown His people that He would fight on their behalf, and He had proven that He would not abandon them. How quickly they forgot those lessons when confronted by an enemy. It’s like they forgot who they were and who they belonged to.
God hasn’t delivered yet? Hang on and have faith, because He’s a God who delivers.
God hasn’t answered yet? Listen up and have faith, because He’s a God who answers.
Remember… we can trust the Almighty God who knows all, sees all, and is good.

How was Abraham Saved?
Genesis 12-17

The Old Testament and New Testament are not two separate stories but one unified story about our great God. The Old Testament presents endless opportunities to discover Jesus. We can see His glory in every Bible theme, every genre, every deliverance storyline, every major image and every major figure. Today, we’ll see that our God always keeps His promises.

  • God never breaks His promises.
  • To be saved is to receive credited righteousness.

Noah and the Great Flood
Genesis 6-9

The rainbow is a declaration that God’s patience continues, even though we deserve judgment. The rainbow points us to the cross. We’re lifted up above the waters of judgment, because Jesus was submerged into them.

  • God is full of love and justice.
  • The ark points us directly to Jesus.

Creation and the Image of God
Genesis 1

Genesis 1 is the foundation of all Scripture. And it tells us— not just how the world came into existence— but more importantly, who is at the center of all reality: God Himself. It tells us who God is, what He has done, and why it matters for us today.

  • God is the eternal Creator
  • God brings order by His Word

Compassion Sunday
Acts 9:36-42

We are embarking on a new partnership with Compassion International. Compassion’s Mission statement is releasing children from poverty in Jesus’ name. It is a church-centered, Jesus-centered, disciple-making organization. They do everything through a local church, a Bible-believing church. This is who we are as a church. We are the people who take care of people, especially the ones who society has thrown out. If you’re following in the way of Jesus, you’re serving people who no one else cares about.

21 Days of Prayer: Fast and Pray
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18

Prayer is a matter of practice. Little practices that grow into a life of praying without ceasing. Fasting helps us gain a new perspective and a renewed reliance upon God. We fast and pray to get closer to Jesus!

  • The purpose of fasting is to take our eyes off the things of this world and to focus completely on God.
  • Denying yourself lies at the root of much of your spiritual growth.

21 Days of Prayer
Luke 11:1-10

When we go to our Father and ask, he tells us to go seek and knock. Why? Because it pushes us to grow closer to him. It pushes us to grow in our Faith with Jesus Christ. The Father wants us to seek after him, and he wants us to relentlessly knock at the door.

  • An active prayer life leads us to a shameless posture of seeking Him.
  • An active prayer life pushes us to be active in our faith!
  • An active prayer life leads us to grow in intimacy with Him.

At the end of the Sermon on the Mount Jesus gives a clear and direct invitation – calling us to a point of decision. We must decide whether we will follow the way of Jesus or the way of the world.

Do Not Judge
Matthew 7:1-5

The Pharisees, who Jesus is addressing in this sermon, had a fundamental problem: they misunderstood God, so they judged themselves wrongly, so they judged others wrongly, so they judged God wrongly. Now fast-forward to the 21st century, where we live in a culture of criticism. What we see in Jesus is that acts of mercy bring life. Mercy must defeat the desire to judge, to criticize, and the desire to point out the fault. The way of mercy is the way of Jesus, and this is the way we all long for.

  • A culture of mercy brings life. A culture of judgment brings death.
  • Notice your sin before critiquing theirs.
  • I need to address my sin before their sin.

Anxiety and Seeking God’s Kingdom
Matthew 6:25-34

Is there a more relevant topic than anxiety? It’s a pervasive subject with endless articles, books, documentaries, and podcasts. Jesus shows us a pathway from fear and anxiety to happiness and freedom. From a life of self-focus to a life connected to His transcendent purposes and Kingdom.

  • We are controlled by what we fear and by what we love
  • As we seek His kingdom and practice His way… fears subside, and freedom sets in

Most of us have a tendency for retaliation & revenge when we have been hurt, wronged, disrespected, or shamed. Matthew 5:27-30

The Blueprint and the Finished Product
Matthew 5:17-20

In this passage, Jesus discusses the Old Testament and what New Testament life will be like in light of it. Sometimes it's hard to make sense of the Old Testament, with its laws, prophecies, and stories, and figure out what this means for us today, after the cross. Salt and Light
Matthew 5:13-16

The character that we see in the Beatitudes is what makes us salty and light. It’s us living out Jesus’ way: humility over arrogance, other-centeredness over self-centeredness, forgiving over holding a grudge. Those kinds of people change an office. They change a family. They change a school. They lift a city!
Be salty this week! Shine your light! Taking risks for the sake of the gospel is not only acceptable… it’s essential.

Taking the Bible Seriously

How do we know that the Bible’s true? The Bible is an inspiring and controversial book that brings about both devotion and derision across the world. Throughout the centuries, Christians have responded to tons of challenges seeking to undermine the authority and relevance of the Bible. It's extraordinary how consistent the Bible's message is. Yet for all that variety of authorship, historical context and literary style, the whole book carries a single, compelling, message from Genesis to Revelation: everything points to a developing understanding of the grace of God in creation, redemption and salvation.

Why is the Bible true?

  • Large Number of manuscripts
  • Agreement with archeology
  • Internal consistencies
  • Fulfilled prophecies
  • Sociological Reason

Luke 10:38-42

If you find your identity and value in how much money you make, how hard you work, how good you are, you’re going to have to keep working harder, keep being better, and making more to just get by. If it defines you, it won’t fulfill you…except for Jesus!
What we really need to do is reorient our lives to where we focus on Jesus because when we focus on Jesus, we see the gospel. And when we see the gospel, we understand who we are in Christ!

Making Disciples
Luke 5:1-11

Jesus didn’t want to do ministry all by Himself. That’s why we see Him do something in this text today that quite literally changed the world. Jesus sought out some blue-collar, rough-around-the-edges guys to start His church with. God's not searching today, trying to find who is the most self-righteous or the most important. He's searching for people who will follow Him. Disciples are not mass-produced; they’re handmade. Each of us has a role in this mission of making disciples. So who will you include in God’s kingdom?

  • A disciple of Jesus obeys Jesus.
  • A disciple of Jesus makes disciples.
  • A disciple of Jesus leaves everything to follow Jesus.

The end of Paul’s letter shows the loyal relationships he has with this church. The guilt and shame from what we’ve done and from what’s been done to us can be overwhelming at times. But if you’re in Christ, you’re not going to be judged by what you’ve done, but what Jesus has done. God did all this so that we can have hope and even abound in hope.

Let’s Get To It
1 Peter 1:22-2:3
The more our souls are involved in obedience to God, the more purification occurs. And the more our souls are purified, the greater our obedience will be. Obedience, purification and holiness begin working together and acting in concert!

These ideas of personal holiness and obedience to God are very much tied to knowing the Word. The Bible is the primary way that God speaks today, and it’s essential to understand who God is. Create a habit. Increase your Bible intake and increase God’s voice in your day-to-day life

Mary’s Song
Luke 1:46-55
In Luke 1, Mary receives quite shocking news, that she’s about to be pregnant. It’s hard to imagine what she could have felt as she received this news. But Mary does not make it about her. She starts her song by singing, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”

In your life, how can your soul magnify the Lord?

You can’t read very far in Luke without seeing Jesus bless somebody. You won’t go more than a few verses without seeing Jesus bless someone with a kind word or help someone who society had overlooked. Jesus sees: the other, the overlooked, and the obvious.

The real joy of following Jesus is following Jesus, to follow in His footsteps, to see what He did, and to act just like Him.

How to Celebrate Christmas
John 3:16-17; Matthew 11:28-30
Christmas should fill us up as we consider and celebrate what Jesus has done for us. Enjoy being in Christ this Christmas. Enjoy the extra time off that God gives you, celebrating the life and peace He’s offering you.

To celebrate Christmas:

  • Enjoy the Gift of Christmas… Jesus!
  • Enjoy instead of impress.
  • Be still and remember God.
  • Share burdens instead of bearing them all by yourself.

The Widow’s Mite
Luke 21:1-4

In this passage, the widow didn’t give more in the sense of a higher dollar amount, but her sacrifice was greater. The world would never notice this woman or this gift, but Jesus notices. Jesus was more interested in why she gave than what she gave because God is after her heart. He wants all of your heart, like His Father had all of this poor widow’s heart.

  • Jesus’ radical generosity toward us is a model for our radical generosity toward others.
  • God gives some people more, so they can share with those who have less.
  • God wants His people to enjoy what He’s given to them.
  • Money cannot make anyone happy.
  • It’s good to save money and build wealth.

Any of these principles taken alone will leave you out of balance, but holding them all in tension together will provide you with a biblically sound and balanced approach to your money and possessions.

Salvation to All
Romans 9:30-10:17

When we work for our own righteousness, when we try to be good enough, that path leads to sadness. The world’s path and all it’s promising you is passing away, but this pathway with Jesus is forever.

As we practice the way of Jesus, we get Jesus! Not as a goal to be attained, but He grows in our hearts— more and more!

We are called to be on mission in Fort Worth and around the world for the glory of God! Be kind, take some initiative, and talk to someone about Jesus.

God’s Sovereign Choice
Romans 9

Romans 9 gives us a God-centered view of God that will help us see that our God can be trusted as faithful. Paul’s point is that it isn't your performance or your race or your heritage that allows you to be part of God’s people. Rather, what makes you part of God’s people is if you’re in Christ.

  • You are chosen if you say “yes” to Jesus.
  • God chooses based on His calling, not our performance.
  • Salvation is about His mercy and His gift, not our work or our right.

Romans 8:12-17

One of the odd characteristics of sin is that it’s a free act that enslaves you. Sin creates the illusion of freedom, but, in the end, it fools us into seeking freedom from God rather than finding freedom in God.

Since you’re no longer condemned, quit living like you’re apart from God! Press into your relationship with God when you sin and fall. Run to Him, not away from Him!

  • We were in bondage to sin.
  • We have been adopted by God.

Romans 8:1-11

Paul articulates two kinds of ways we get freedom from sin that came from salvation: by His death, Jesus freed us from the penalty of sin; through His Spirit, He releases us from the power of sin!

  • Jesus’ death wiped out not only the present existence of condemnation, but it wiped out the possibility of future condemnation.
  • Coming to Christ is not a return to religion; it’s a surrender to a person
  • The Christian life is not a gradual self-improvement. It is fellowship with the Holy Spirit

Waging War
Romans 7

We aren’t using the law as a system of salvation. Jesus’ perfect life, His death, burial, and resurrection, are the ladder up to God! And we are accepted in Christ! Jesus is moving us away from this exhausting experience of focusing on the external and toward focusing on the heart.

  • What’s underyour sin is a battle for who is king of your heart.
  • The real me is in Christ.

3 ways for you to wage war on your sin:

  • Fix your gaze on Jesus.
  • Notice what makes you angry, sad, happy, or fearful.

Know & Say “No”
Romans 6

Salvation is a process and once we surrender in faith to Jesus, we spend the rest of lives here on earth growing & maturing in our faith. So, as we strive to live out our faith in Jesus, Paul gives us a reminder and an action: know your identity in Christ and don’t let sin reign in your life.

  • Our identity in Jesus is our most important identity - it shapes everything about us and fills us with hope.
  • You can serve sin or you can serve the Savior

Wake up each morning choosing not to serve sin, which leads to death, but instead to serve Jesus, which leads to life.

Romans 5:12-21

What we have here is the story of two men and two kingdoms: Adam and Jesus. You identify with one of these two. Sin and death is what comes with us being in Adam. We are all related to Adam. But now we have - Jesus. And what we get in Adam, that is so bad, is contrasted with what we get in Jesus Christ, which is so immeasurably good, it changes everything.

What we get in Jesus:A free gift (v. 15)
Grace (v. 15,20)
Justification (v. 16)
Righteousness (v. 17,19)
Life (v. 18)

  • Where we once experienced- Adam’s condemnation, now we experience– Jesus’ salvation.
  • Where once you were doomed to experience death, now we can experience life!

Reality Check
Romans 3:1-20

Sin is a heart condition–one we can’t defeat & overcome on our own. We’re sinners, all of us, & that’s bad. But it’s good news at the same time because Jesus has taken care of it for us. Jesus perfectly paid the penalty for our sins & gives us opportunity for forgiveness & grace when we put our faith in Him.

Kindness Leads to Repentance
Romans 2:1-5
In chapter 2, Paul shows that religious people can reject God by making their own good works an idol. Focused on themselves instead of Jesus.

  • Religious people need the gospel just as much as non-religious people.

God’s kindness leads us to repentance. And then we mimic God in this way...our kindness, not our judgment, will lead lost people to Jesus.

How do we, as God’s people, live for what’s right and not judge?

  • 1st Practice: Notice your sin before critiquing their sin.
  • 2nd Practice: Show radical kindness to those around me.

Trading the Truth for a Lie
Romans 1:18-32

In Rome, they suppressed the plain truth about God and didn’t honor God, so they faced the consequences of their sin by trading the truth for a lie.
When we say, “Welcome Home,” we mean that anyone can be at home here. And at the same time, we don’t suppress the truth or invite God’s wrath by practicing things that He says are sinful.

How do we even more become a church where people can speak openly about themselves while we hold true to what God says? We suffer and love well. We make it about Jesus, and we build a beautiful family of God where there’s room for everyone at the table.

The bible calls Jesus the Good Shepherd because Jesus is not afraid of the wolf of fear, the bear of doubt or the panther of temptation. In fact, the bible says that God's rescue mission was completed in the work of Jesus and was fulfilled on the cross, when Jesus defeated the ultimate monsters that approached His sheep, Sin and Death.

God doesn’t promise a problem free life, but He does promise to give you a life full of joy, guidance, protection and purpose through His son Christ Jesus: The Good Shepherd

God gives Jonah a clear command: get up and go to Nineveh. So Jonah gets up and goes the opposite direction. By heading in the opposite direction and attempting to flee God’s presence, Jonah is announcing his unwillingness to serve God.

As we try do it our way, we find it to be a dead end. Either we do reach the summit, only to find there are more summits to climb or we fall to the bottom and waste our lives wishing for what could have been.

But Jesus offers a different way… A different route for your life altogether. To repent means to turn from your way and turn towards God’s way. Come to Jesus today. He’ll give you new life and a new path that actually leads to peace and fulfillment.

Jesus Never Said That: Only God can Judge Me
Matthew 7:1-5
Jesus’ two words “judge not” here in Matthew 7 may be His most famous saying in our modern culture and may be His most often misquoted or misunderstood. We live in a culture of criticism. Criticism and judgmentalism are first cousins. Be careful of developing a critical spirit. Judgment is bad for you and sets itself in opposition to the culture of mercy that Jesus brings to the world.

  • We have to be People of Mercy
  • Notice your sin before critiquing theirs.
  • I need to address my sin before their sin.

Jesus Never Said That: God helps those who help themselves
Matthew 11:28-30
Today, we’ll look at that great, hope-filled promise that God helps those who help themselves… yeah… Jesus never said that! We are, in fact, helpless. Our God, instead of demanding that we work hard and figure out a way up the mountain, Jesus came down the mountain and carries us to Him.
There are a lot of offers that we get that just seem a little too good to be true. But Jesus’ offer is real. Jesus is not harsh and demanding. His way is easy and light.

  • We’re fully known and fully accepted without conditions by Jesus.
  • We give Jesus the full weight of our sin, shame, and burdens, and He gives us rest, peace, and life.

Jesus Never Said That: God will never give you more than you can handle
Matthew 14:22-33

Jesus often gives you more than you can handle so that you’ll lean into Him, depend on Him and remember that you actually aren’t self-sufficient.

You might be following Jesus if…

  • You can only see one step in front of you.
  • You’re going through a storm.
  • You have doubts.
  • You’re drenched.
  • You’re starting to sink.
  • Your storm produces worship.

Risen
Luke 24

Easter is a day of celebration across the world, hundreds of millions of people will gather to celebrate that Jesus is alive! We celebrate that love is more powerful than death. We celebrate that Jesus died in our place, on our behalf. The Bible says He took our sin onto Himself and then 3 days later He rose again, to conquer death, hell, and the grave. If you don’t know Jesus, He wants to extend that love to you to today. He wants to save you!

The Reality of Our Redemption
Isaiah 53
This powerful passage displays the reality of our redemption. A suffering servant, who willingly died in our place. God’s plan of salvation for us, through the death of His Son.

  • Jesus is the only One who qualifies as a sufficient substitute to pay the penalty for our sins.
  • We’re sinners by nature & by choice.
  • The severity of our sins shouted loudly from the cross as our Suffering Servant silently endured for our sake.
  • The greater good of God’s grace was in view at the cross.

Because grace doesn’t make sense and life isn’t fair, let’s take up our cross & follow Jesus.

Partnership & Progress
Philippians 4:10-23
Paul ends this letter with a joyful expression of thanks to the Philippians. He’s thankful for their partnership & their progress. Their loyalty to Jesus is growing as they’ve given sacrificially, even in the midst of their own struggles, to help advance the gospel.
As we seek to be good partners in the gospel & make progress on our spiritual journey, we must learn from Paul here the secret to contentment.

  • Our generosity for Christ exemplifies our growth in Christ.
  • Christ is enough. Christ empowers us to be content.
  • Contentment should be disconnected from our circumstances & connected to Jesus.
  • Confidence in Christ (not ourselves) breeds contentment.
  • As we joyfully walk with Jesus we must know Jesus is the One providing & Jesus is the One strengthening us along the way.

Pressing On
Philippians 3:12-4:1
In this text, Paul provides an inspiring and instructive path toward maturity in Christ and it’s like training for a marathon. We won’t slide into the “prize” but pursue it.
Practices to forget what lies behind:

  1. Pray my emotions to God.
  2. Drop my sin.
  3. Drop extra weight.

Practices for pursuing the prize:

  1. Filling my mind with God’s Word.
  2. Practicing generosity with “my” money.
  3. Pursuing biblical community.
  4. Worshipping God.

Gospel Focus
Philippians 1:12-18

Paul wanted to preach the gospel in Rome & you would think being in prison would hinder it, but God’s plan continues to press ahead. God was blazing a trail for the gospel through the imperial guard. Not only was God converting soldiers to faith in Jesus, He was strengthening the faith of current believers to share the gospel.

  • We might be surprised how God can use us to advance the gospel, even in the most unlikely of circumstances.
  • True joy is found in focusing on Jesus.

What is a church?

The church is not a building or a meeting. People do not go to church but are the church. And so, commitment to your church is not commitment to a building or a set of preferences but to a group of people!

  • The church is a people
  • Members have privileges; partners have ownership.
    • Partners own the responsibility of carrying the mission forward
  • Unity isn’t the result of sameness.
    • We’re not unified because we’re all alike. We’re unified because we’re on the same mission
  • We commit to each other.

A Holy People
1 Peter 1:13-21

God isn’t calling us to be perfect, but to be distinct from the world. We’re to live a set-apart life, not trying to "blend in" with the world, but instead living according to God’s Word.

  • The same Father God who is setting this high expectation of holiness for us is quick to forgive. He’s quick to welcome us home. He’s eager to heal and restore and renew.

Real Hope
1 Peter 1:1-12

1 Peter is a letter to the believers who had been dispersed, sent throughout the ancient world and who were under intense persecution. Peter knew what it took to endure without bitterness, without losing hope. He understood first hand what it looked like to have big faith in a big God.

  • For it to be hope, it has to come from Jesus.
    • There are two components to this living hope: right-now hope and future/forever hope.
  • We all want gold, but trials are more valuable.
    • Learning that lesson, to depend more on God or whatever the result of the trial is… that genuineness is more precious than gold.

Praise through the trial and through the pain, knowing that Jesus is your Living Hope!

Enjoying God through Celebration

Celebration is at the heart of the way of Christ. Christ, the Redeemer, came to set people free who are slaves and prisoners to sin.  And that’s cause to celebrate. Celebration brings joy into life, and joy makes us strong. With that strength we endure certain trials, knowing that better days are ahead. As Christians, we always have hope in Christ!
Every discipline should bring joy, excitement, and a sense of thanksgiving. And making celebration a regular occurrence, we systematize remembrance. We set up times where we stop, look up, and celebrate/enjoy

Enjoying God in Stillness
Psalm 46
There’s something we can only know about God in stillness. Sitting still before God reminds us that He’s God, and that He’s with us. There is a perspective on life that we can only get as we sit still before God to remember and receive.Being still and knowing He’s God has a life-changing effect. We reject the world’s message of a sovereign self and give our lives anew to our Sovereign God.

How to practice stillness in God: 5-10 minutes per day of patient, open-ended yieldedness, centering yourself on God

Enjoying God through His WordIn this new series, we’ll look at 5 spiritual practices through which we enjoy our growing relationship with God. Practicing these habits and practicing the way of Jesus is the good life. What is the Bible?

  • It is God’s Word. Its purpose is to reveal God to us. It is God’s self-revelation to humanity. The Bible also tells us who we are.

4 reasons why committed Christians don’t read the Bible:

  1. Is the Bible actually perfect?
  2. Does the Bible have authority in my life?
  3. It’s complicated, and we give up.
  4. “I don’t have time.”

How to Enjoy God through reading the Bible every day:

  • Make a habit reading the Bible 20 minutes a day for the rest of my life
  • Increase your Bible intake throughout the week:
    • Listen to the Bible
    • Memorize Bible verses
    • Find a Bible Buddy.

The Gospel
Galatians 4:1-7
In this message, we see that our relationship with Jesus is not about standing attention and reciting the right words, but that this is a relationship with a loving Dad who wants us to know Him and wants to be known by us.
The modern view of freedom is that you’re free from everyone and everything and can do what you want. But Jesus wants to set you free for something, to live according to the purpose that God created for you. True freedom isn’t independence of self, but dependence on God.

  • We were slaves to sin.
  • The Father sent the Son to redeem and adopt us.
  • Our relationship with God is close and personal.

Jesus and Zacchaeus
Luke 19:1-10
Jesus shattered the social structures of His day by dining with those who had no business dining with Him. Kindness and goodness expressed in the form of hospitality, surrounding our family table with strangers and the unlikeliest of guests, has the power to redefine belonging in a divisive world.
Jesus challenges you to take His mission home… He sets up your house, your apartment, your dorm room as an embassy of the kingdom.

  • Christian hospitality is about those who have no business being there, being there.
  • Zacchaeus started the day with a full bank account and an empty life, but he ended the day with a full life and an empty bank account.

The Rich Young Ruler
Luke 18:18-30
Jesus was calling this young man toward a kind of faith that relinquishes this life in exchange for eternal life. Jesus displaces the treasures of this world so that He alone will be adored, trusted, and obeyed. He does this because He loves us. Because what He’s offering and life with Him is infinitely better and freer!

To inherit eternal life:

  • I must be clear on who Jesus is.
  • I must lay down the things of this world so that I can have Jesus.
  • I must submit to Jesus.

Pharisee and Tax Collector
Luke 18:9-14

In this parable, Jesus is getting to this implicit question: who is really righteous in God’s sight? Who is truly part of His kingdom?
Meaning and purpose come only when God is in the center of our lives, not ourselves.

  • The Pharisee had an inflated sense of self and a deflated sense of God.
  • The tax collector was justified because he humbled himself before God and had faith in God.

How to grow in spiritual humility:

  • When you catch yourself judging someone, pray the tax collector’s prayer:  "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
  • Preach the gospel to yourself every day.

What the world offers is not greater than the Father’s heart and love.

  • Choose the Father’s LOVE over THINGS.
  • The kiss came before the son’s confession.
    • No matter who you are, no matter what you did, if you come home God will accept you and love you. You do not have to earn it.

What makes heaven erupt with joy is a lost, troublemaking, wandering child of His coming home! Be like Jesus and go out of your way seeking and finding the lost sheep and loving them into God’s kingdom, where they really belong.

  • Churches lose their way and start dying when the wrong things make them mad.
  • Jesus thinks that all of the heartache, and all of the extra searching for that one troublemaker is worth it.

Humility
Luke 14:7-11
In this life, you have two options:

  1. Be humbled.
  2. Humble yourself.

The world is teaching you that focusing on yourself brings happiness, but Jesus teaches us that serving others brings true life. That humbling yourself and putting others first is best for you.
Choosing humility is better/safer/wiser for you because God created the world to work in such a way that people who exalt themselves will be humbled, and people who choose humility will prosper.

How to practicing humility:

  1. Serve others
  2. City Group
  3. Ask God for help.

Do Not Be Anxious
Luke 12:22-34

God is sovereign over our struggles, our worries and our anxieties. Have faith in God who is our provider. Live your life for the Kingdom of Heaven and everything will fall into place.

Reasons why we shouldn't be anxious:

  1. Worrying doesn't do us any good
  2. Our worry paints an inconsistent view of God to those around us
  3. Worry is a marker for us that our heart is not in the right place

One Necessary Thing
Luke 10:38-42
We’re busy. We’re beyond distracted. We’ll see today, too, that Martha was a workaholic. Martha was busy, busy, busy. She was so busy tidying up and preparing and serving that she missed Jesus.
Are you weary? Are you distracted? Are you busy and anxious? Come to Jesus. His invitation is for you. Come to Him now, by faith, and He’ll give you rest.

  1. Busyness holds me back from hearing God.
  2. Busyness makes me anxious.
  3. I need to reorient my attention onto Jesus.

Applications:

  • Make Time for Jesus (Daily, Weekly, Monthly, Yearly)
  • Physically write down somewhere where you’ll see this every day:
What does Jesus want for me today?

Redefined Greatness
Luke 9:46-48

How do you define greatness? Jesus says that the person who takes the lowly position of service is great in God’s kingdom. He is calling you to this redefined greatness. Who are you serving?

  • Great people minister to the one that the rest of society wants to forget is even there.
  • Comparison either tears down or puffs up.
  • We believe that small things done with great love will change the world.

Don’t Follow Your Heart
Luke 9:23-27
All we hear in the world is: "Believe in yourself, Express yourself, Realize the power within you." But Jesus comes and says, “Empty yourself and believe in Me.” If you want your shackles tightened, believe in yourself.  If you want your chains gone, believe in Jesus. Following Christ means disowning the self and giving allegiance to Him instead. That’s the only path toward happiness and fulfillment!

  • To follow Jesus, I must deny myself
  • To follow Jesus, I must take up my cross daily.
  • To follow Jesus, I must give my entire life to Jesus.

“Where is Your Faith?”
Luke 8:22-25

Where is your faith placed? If your faith is placed on your shoulders, you’re going to be so exhausted. Won’t you let Jesus be your rest today?

  1. Storms create opportunities for Jesus to grow in my heart.
  2. Jesus is in control, even if it doesn’t feel that way.
  3. The object of my faith must be Jesus.

How do you continue to grow into Jesus being the Object of your faith? Here are a few practices/habits:

  • Tell God about your storm and give Him the weight of it.
  • Memorize Bible verses that remind me of Jesus being the object of my faith.
  • Think about God’s attributes.
  • Think about the Names of God in the Bible.
  • Name your storms in City Group.

He is not here, but has risen!
Luke 24
"He is not here, but has risen!" Those 7 words changed history.Jesus is inviting you to leave the burdensome ways of this world and to step into His way that is easy, with His burden that’s light!

  • Why did God do all this? Because He cares. Jesus loves you, so He died in your place on the cross to pay for your sin, then He rose to life to defeat death and offer you eternal life.
  • Sin promises you happiness, but it costs you everything.Jesus came to free you from that endless cycle of hope and disappointment.

Becoming a People of Radical Acceptance
Luke 7:34-50

If we own the mission of accepting people like Jesus did and offering them forgiveness from God, we should see everywhere we go as an opportunity to bless someone, accept someone, welcome someone, and to turn that everyday space into a sacred moment with God.

  • Jesus welcomes every kind of person.
  • Hospitality and welcoming people might be the best reconciliation tools in our hands.
  • Jesus wants to forgive sin.

The Widow’s Mite
Luke 21:1-4

The Bible gives us a very helpful framework through which we can view our possessions. It is a set of biblical principles that we must hold in tension. Now, any of these principles taken alone will take you out of balance, but holding them all in tension together will provide you with a biblically sound and balanced approach to your money and possessions.

Ditches to avoid when it comes to how Christians view their possessions and money:

  1. Ditch #1: God wants 10% of my money, and I can do whatever I want with the other 90%.
  2. Ditch #2: I can’t enjoy spending money, because I should have given this money to someone in need.

Biblical principles

  1. Jesus’ radical generosity toward us is a model for our radical generosity toward others.
  2. God gives some people more, so they can share with those who have less.
  3. God wants His people to enjoy what He’s given to them.
  4. Money cannot make anyone happy.
  5. It’s good to save money and build wealth.

Judging Others
Luke 6:37-42
We have to be people of mercy. If we want to be set free emotionally and spiritually, we have to let Jesus change our tendency and desire to criticize and judge others. Mercy must defeat the desire to judge, to criticize, or to point out faults. The way of mercy is the way of Jesus, and this is the way we all long for.

  • Principle of Returning Judgment
If we go around judging people, we're inviting others to judge us too.
  • Notice your sin before critiquing their sin.
We notice their sin before our sin because of pride and shame.
But there is mercy for our mistakes. Jesus has not given up on us.
    Evaluate your behavior and repent.
  • I need to address my sin before I address their sin.
We approach others with much more humility and love when we're aware of our own brokenness.

Love Your Enemies
Luke 6:27-36
Jesus wants to free us from our anger and hate so effectively that we’re able to love our enemies.

  • Be loving toward your enemies. We are to be people building bridges made of love. Applying bandages to society made of forgiveness, hope, mercy, and grace.
  • Freedom from anger.Jesus wants to free us from our sinful anger and hate so effectively that we’re able to love our enemies. Chronic guilt is the price we pay if we avoid internal change. Repentance is the way forward.
  • Ask yourself:
    • Who doesn’t love me, but I really desire their love?
    • Who do I have a hard time freely doing good to?
    • Who do I have bitterness for?
  • Do the work to recognize the anger, engage the anger, and repent.

Luke 6:20-23

In this passage Jesus speaks to being spiritually poor, hungry for the righteousness of God, and mourning your old self. When we experience the true kingdom of God, then comes the worldly rejection but we are not alone in that suffering!

  • Spiritual Poverty- We are blessed when we put the totality of our hope for any spiritual gain in the person and work of Jesus Christ, not in ourselves.
  • Hunger for Righteousness- We are blessed when we have a deep, consuming, longing desire for the acceptance of God.
  • When we experience the true kingdom of God, then comes the worldly rejection- Blessed are you when you are different from the world, when you suffer on account of the Son of God.

How to Become a Pharisee
Luke 6:1-11

Don't be a pharisee. How can we focus on what Jesus has done instead of what we are doing? God’s invitation to you today is to avoid becoming a Pharisee by receiving this Sabbath: resting from work and resting in Christ.

How to Become a Pharisee:

  1. Hold your opinions and traditions more tightly than the Bible (verse 2)
  2. Focus on being right (verse 7)
  3. Be more concerned with rules than love (verse 11)
  4. Focus on what you do instead of what Jesus has done (1-11)

Does Fort Worth Ever Cross Your Mind?
Luke 5:27-32
In this passage we see Jesus go out of His way to engage a sinner. This is what He's really about. He took on human form and came to earth to seek and save the lost. He’s inviting you to do the same; to open your home, to open your life, to invite people to Jesus across the table or at a party.

  • "Follow Me"
Jesus came to a man who routinely stole from his own people and called him to be His disciple. Matthew, right then, packed up and said Yes!
Starting a relationship with Jesus is accessible. Matthew took Jesus at His Word and started walking after Him. You can do that too!
  • Stop, engage, invite and have dinner with them
If you’re seeing what Jesus sees and doing what Jesus does, you’re engaging with everyone! Having meals with unchurched people for the purpose of them meeting Jesus is probably the best way for you to live on mission for Jesus!

Making Disciples
Luke 5:1-11
What Jesus introduces in this passage actually matters. He invites us into a life of expanding His love and spreading His good news to our neighbors and friends, and then showing them how to follow Jesus along with us.

  • A disciple of Jesus, obeys Jesus.
Obedience to God invites favor and blessings into your life. Sin dismisses blessings and brings chaos and exhaustion into your life.
  • A disciple of Jesus makes disciples.
  • A disciple of Jesus leaves everything to follow Jesus.
There’s a decision that we must all make. If you follow Jesus, He is your Lord and He is in charge.

The Temptation of Jesus
Luke 4:1-13

What we view as God’s punishment is oftentimes God’s training. We think this difficult circumstance is some sort of penalty, but it might be Him equipping you for what He wants you to do next.

  • TRUTH: I can still trust God in the wilderness
  • WEAPON: God's spirit in us.
Jesus approached the coming temptations,  Not in His own physical strength, but with the strength from His Father.
  • WEAPON:  SPEAK GOD’S WORD. Speak God's Word
Jesus fought the fake promises of the enemy with the dependable promises of God!
  • TRUTH: What I'm really longing for, only Jesus can provide!

Forward Into the Second Season

We are so excited for this second season at Redemption City Church as we begin 2 services! Pray for our church as we fear not, stand firm, and go forward!

Fear Not

  • Don’t live in fear of "what ifs" but press on in Christ! Let faith drive you! Your fears are great, but the truth is greater!

Stand Firm

  • Stand firm in His strength, not yours. You can stand firm through the trial, into the next season because of who He is, not because of what you bring to the table.

Go Forward

Vision Sunday
John 3:16-17

We are loving and generous people because Jesus is loving and generous. Now He has sent us into Fort Worth, Texas to love people, to welcome people into our church and into our lives because we love them like Jesus loves us!

  • For God so loved: This is love that is stronger than death. God is love and He always acts in consistency with His character; therefore, He cannot stop loving you.
  • The whole world: God’s love crosses borders and barriers unlike any other force in the history of the world.
  • That whoever believes: Whoever means whoever. No matter what you’ve done; no matter your sin. Belief is a real trust in Jesus’ work and in His Person.
  • Should not perish but have eternal life: People who do not believe in Jesus will never experience life in its fullness here on earth, and they’ll be separated from God forever after this life.
  • God’s heart for you is salvation. Not condemnation. He sacrificed His own Son. Jesus willingly gave His life for you!
  • Jesus really loves people! God the Father sent God the Son, and now God the Son has empowered us with God the Spirit to reach this city and love others like He loves!

The Genealogy of Jesus
Luke 3:23-38

What we see in this passage is God’s master plan, from the very beginning, to corroborate Jesus’ credentials as the Messiah— the Christ. Every page of this perfect book is about Him… Jesus. And He wants you to know that He’s the Messiah, because He wants to save you!**

  • Jesus' Genealogy is important. Any claim to royalty back then had to been verified.
  • The real reason that God goes to such great lengths to show us that Jesus is His Son? LOVE.

United in Prayer
Ephesians 6:10-20
In this scripture, Paul is warning us—God’s people—that living for Jesus will bring adversaries and hate that often don’t even make sense. But our Lord carries us through life as we are strong only in the Lord!

Satan’s Playbook:

  1. Doubt God’s Word (Gen 3)
  2. Consumption, Security, and Status (Matt 4)
  3. Tempt me to act independently from the Father (Gen 3 and Matt 4)

Put on the armor of God:

  1. Belt of truth: We fasten the belt of truth by soaking our minds in the inerrant Word of God.
  2. Breastplate of righteousness: Deny sinful temptations & pursue righteousness at every turn.
  3. Gospel of peace: Because of the gospel, we stand ready! We stand strong!
  4. Shield of faith: Have faith to walk in His way & to stand behind His impenetrable shield.
  5. Helmet of salvation: Let the gospel protect your thinking. Believe what God says about you!
  6. Sword of the Spirit: Our weapon against Satan is the Word of God!

Love and Respect
Ephesians 5:21-33 (B)

The Bible is calling husbands and wives to have unconditional love and unconditional respect for each other.  When a husband feels disrespected, it’s especially hard to love his wife. When a wife feels unloved, it’s especially hard to respect him. This is how we get caught in the crazy cycle. So, the million-dollar question, how in the world do we avoid or get out of the crazy cycle?

3 ways:

  1. Commit to unconditional love and respect
  2. Proactively show love and respect
  3. Argue with love and respect
