Trusting God’s way instead of relying on our own way leads to a much better outcome every single time.

Daniel’s story is full of risk, courage, and standing up for what’s right under immense cultural pressure. He trusted God, lived by faith, and left the outcome to God.
Like Daniel, Jesus was thrown to the lions, even though He didn’t deserve it. But unlike Daniel, God would not protect His Son from the den. Jesus allowed Himself to be crushed on our behalf. Daniel’s story points to Jesus who died in our place.

And that’s the headline of this story today. The story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego is one of the most inspiring and relevant accounts in all of the Bible, and it points directly to Jesus.

You can be out of spiritual slavery, but still have slavery in your reflexes.
In this passage, Paul is reminding us that we are not slaves! We are adopted, wanted, and forever in the family of God. Slaves obey out of fear. Sons obey out of belonging.
Many of us today fall into legalism by treating Christian obedience as a means to earn God’s favor, rather than a grateful response to grace already received. What would it look like for you to stop earning God’s approval and start resting in it?

We are free spiritually, but we so often circle back to spiritual slavery by trying to secure our own security. But we were not saved by our righteousness, nor do we keep our salvation by doing good. We’re saved because Jesus stepped onto the cross, in our place, died the death we should have died, so that we can have His life!
In this passage, we see that God wants a personal relationship with us. He’s our Dad. That it’s not about standing at attention and reciting the right words, but that this is a relationship with a loving Dad who wants us to know Him.

God delivered His people over and over in dramatic and only-God-could-do-it ways. Then they face a trial, and all seems lost. All of a sudden, they began to see themselves as grasshoppers to be stepped on instead of seeing themselves as God’s chosen people. The people of Israel idolized the Promised Land over God Himself. Idols cannot simply be removed. They need to be replaced. By what? Exodus 14:10-14

God had shown His people that He would fight on their behalf, and He had proven that He would not abandon them. How quickly they forgot those lessons when confronted by an enemy. It’s like they forgot who they were and who they belonged to.
God hasn’t delivered yet? Hang on and have faith, because He’s a God who delivers.
God hasn’t answered yet? Listen up and have faith, because He’s a God who answers.
Remember… we can trust the Almighty God who knows all, sees all, and is good.

Planted faith grows into bigger faith

We are the people who take care of people, especially the ones who society has thrown out. If you’re following in the way of Jesus, you’re serving people who no one else cares about.

Do Not Judge
Matthew 7:1-5

The Pharisees, who Jesus is addressing in this sermon, had a fundamental problem: they misunderstood God, so they judged themselves wrongly, so they judged others wrongly, so they judged God wrongly. Now fast-forward to the 21st century, where we live in a culture of criticism. What we see in Jesus is that acts of mercy bring life. Mercy must defeat the desire to judge, to criticize, and the desire to point out the fault. The way of mercy is the way of Jesus, and this is the way we all long for.

A culture of mercy brings life. A culture of judgment brings death.
Notice your sin before critiquing theirs.
I need to address my sin before their sin.

How do we know that the Bible’s true? The Bible is an inspiring and controversial book that brings about both devotion and derision across the world. Throughout the centuries, Christians have responded to tons of challenges seeking to undermine the authority and relevance of the Bible. It's extraordinary how consistent the Bible's message is. Yet for all that variety of authorship, historical context and literary style, the whole book carries a single, compelling, message from Genesis to Revelation: everything points to a developing understanding of the grace of God in creation, redemption and salvation.

If you find your identity and value in how much money you make, how hard you work, how good you are, you’re going to have to keep working harder, keep being better, and making more to just get by. If it defines you, it won’t fulfill you…except for Jesus!
What we really need to do is reorient our lives to where we focus on Jesus because when we focus on Jesus, we see the gospel. And when we see the gospel, we understand who we are in Christ!

Busyness keeps me from Jesus.
Busyness makes me anxious.
I need to center my attention on Jesus.

Jesus sought out some blue-collar, rough-around-the-edges guys to start His church with. God's not searching today, trying to find who is the most self-righteous or the most important. He's searching for people who will follow Him. Disciples are not mass-produced; they’re handmade. Each of us has a role in this mission of making disciples. So who will you include in God’s kingdom?

A disciple of Jesus obeys Jesus.
A disciple of Jesus makes disciples.
A disciple of Jesus leaves everything to follow Jesus.

Luke 1:46-55In Luke 1, Mary receives quite shocking news, that she’s about to be pregnant. It’s hard to imagine what she could have felt as she received this news. But Mary does not make it about her. She starts her song by singing, “My soul magnifies the Lord.”

In your life, how can your soul magnify the Lord?

You can’t read very far in Luke without seeing Jesus bless somebody. You won’t go more than a few verses without seeing Jesus bless someone with a kind word or help someone who society had overlooked. Jesus sees: the other, the overlooked, and the obvious.

The real joy of following Jesus is following Jesus, to follow in His footsteps, to see what He did, and to act just like Him.

The Widow’s Mite
Luke 21:1-4

In this passage, the widow didn’t give more in the sense of a higher dollar amount, but her sacrifice was greater. The world would never notice this woman or this gift, but Jesus notices. Jesus was more interested in why she gave than what she gave because God is after her heart. He wants all of your heart, like His Father had all of this poor widow’s heart.

Jesus’ radical generosity toward us is a model for our radical generosity toward others.
God gives some people more, so they can share with those who have less.
God wants His people to enjoy what He’s given to them.
Money cannot make anyone happy.
It’s good to save money and build wealth.

Any of these principles taken alone will leave you out of balance, but holding them all in tension together will provide you with a biblically sound and balanced approach to your money and possessions.

What we have here is the story of two men and two kingdoms: Adam and Jesus. You identify with one of these two. Sin and death is what comes with us being in Adam. We are all related to Adam. But now we have - Jesus. And what we get in Adam, that is so bad, is contrasted with what we get in Jesus Christ, which is so immeasurably good, it changes everything.

What we get in Jesus:A free gift (v. 15)
Grace (v. 15,20)
Justification (v. 16)
Righteousness (v. 17,19)
Life (v. 18)

Where we once experienced- Adam’s condemnation, now we experience– Jesus’ salvation.
Where once you were doomed to experience death, now we can experience life!

I Did it My Way
Jonah 1God gives Jonah a clear command: get up and go to Nineveh. So Jonah gets up and goes the opposite direction. By heading in the opposite direction and attempting to flee God’s presence, Jonah is announcing his unwillingness to serve God.

As we try do it our way, we find it to be a dead end. Either we do reach the summit, only to find there are more summits to climb or we fall to the bottom and waste our lives wishing for what could have been.

But Jesus offers a different way… A different route for your life altogether. To repent means to turn from your way and turn towards God’s way. Come to Jesus today. He’ll give you new life and a new path that actually leads to peace and fulfillment.

Jesus Never Said That: Only God can Judge Me
Matthew 7:1-5Jesus’ two words “judge not” here in Matthew 7 may be His most famous saying in our modern culture and may be His most often misquoted or misunderstood. We live in a culture of criticism. Criticism and judgmentalism are first cousins. Be careful of developing a critical spirit. Judgment is bad for you and sets itself in opposition to the culture of mercy that Jesus brings to the world.

We have to be People of Mercy
Notice your sin before critiquing theirs.
I need to address my sin before their sin.

Jesus Never Said That: God helps those who help themselves
Matthew 11:28-30Today, we’ll look at that great, hope-filled promise that God helps those who help themselves… yeah… Jesus never said that! We are, in fact, helpless. Our God, instead of demanding that we work hard and figure out a way up the mountain, Jesus came down the mountain and carries us to Him.
There are a lot of offers that we get that just seem a little too good to be true. But Jesus’ offer is real. Jesus is not harsh and demanding. His way is easy and light.

We’re fully known and fully accepted without conditions by Jesus.
We give Jesus the full weight of our sin, shame, and burdens, and He gives us rest, peace, and life.

The Reality of Our Redemption
Isaiah 53This powerful passage displays the reality of our redemption. A suffering servant, who willingly died in our place. God’s plan of salvation for us, through the death of His Son.

Jesus is the only One who qualifies as a sufficient substitute to pay the penalty for our sins.
We’re sinners by nature & by choice.
The severity of our sins shouted loudly from the cross as our Suffering Servant silently endured for our sake.
The greater good of God’s grace was in view at the cross.

Because grace doesn’t make sense and life isn’t fair, let’s take up our cross & follow Jesus.

Contentment should be disconnected from our circumstances & connected to Jesus.
Confidence in Christ (not ourselves) breeds contentment.
As we joyfully walk with Jesus we must know Jesus is the One providing & Jesus is the One strengthening us along the way.

Paul wanted to preach the gospel in Rome & you would think being in prison would hinder it, but God’s plan continues to press ahead. God was blazing a trail for the gospel through the imperial guard. Not only was God converting soldiers to faith in Jesus, He was strengthening the faith of current believers to share the gospel.

We might be surprised how God can use us to advance the gospel, even in the most unlikely of circumstances.
True joy is found in focusing on Jesus.
Joy isn’t the satisfaction of getting our way, but instead joy is satisfaction that Jesus is enough & He is in control.
Adversity is an avenue for the advancement of the gospel.

Instead of reminding Jesus of how good and how loyal Lazarus has been to Jesus, they emphasize Jesus’ love for Lazarus. These sisters understand their standing with Jesus. They understand that Jesus possibly healing Lazarus isn’t going to happen because their brother is good… but BECAUSE JESUS IS GOOD.

Jesus has better timing than me.
When I don’t know what Jesus is doing, I can be sure He’s doing something.
Jesus is the resurrection and the life.

1 Peter 1:1-12

1 Peter is a letter to the believers who had been dispersed, sent throughout the ancient world and who were under intense persecution. Peter knew what it took to endure without bitterness, without losing hope. He understood first hand what it looked like to have big faith in a big God.

For it to be hope, it has to come from Jesus.
- There are two components to this living hope: right-now hope and future/forever hope.
We all want gold, but trials are more valuable.
- Learning that lesson, to depend more on God or whatever the result of the trial is… that genuineness is more precious than gold.

Praise through the trial and through the pain, knowing that Jesus is your Living Hope!

The Gospel
Galatians 4:1-7In this message, we see that our relationship with Jesus is not about standing attention and reciting the right words, but that this is a relationship with a loving Dad who wants us to know Him and wants to be known by us.
The modern view of freedom is that you’re free from everyone and everything and can do what you want. But Jesus wants to set you free for something, to live according to the purpose that God created for you. True freedom isn’t independence of self, but dependence on God.

We were slaves to sin.

In this parable, Jesus is getting to this implicit question: who is really righteous in God’s sight? Who is truly part of His kingdom?
Meaning and purpose come only when God is in the center of our lives, not ourselves.

The Pharisee had an inflated sense of self and a deflated sense of God.
The tax collector was justified because he humbled himself before God and had faith in God.

How to grow in spiritual humility:

When you catch yourself judging someone, pray the tax collector’s prayer: "God, be merciful to me, a sinner!"
Preach the gospel to yourself every day.

In this passage there are two sons: one good, staying and obeying and one bad, leaving and disobeying. But they both disrespected the father. They both wanted the father things, and not the father's love.
What the world offers is not greater than the Father’s heart and love.

Choose the Father’s LOVE over THINGS.⁠
The kiss came before the son’s confession.
- No matter who you are, no matter what you did, if you come home God will accept you and love you. You do not have to earn it.
Jesus is the true elder brother.
- This younger son in the story gets a pharisee for an elder brother, as believers we do not!

Are you weary? Are you distracted? Are you busy and anxious? Come to Jesus. His invitation is for you. Come to Him now, by faith, and He’ll give you rest.

Busyness holds me back from hearing God.
Busyness makes me anxious.
I need to reorient my attention onto Jesus.

Where is your faith placed? If your faith is placed on your shoulders, you’re going to be so exhausted. Won’t you let Jesus be your rest today?

Storms create opportunities for Jesus to grow in my heart.
Jesus is in control, even if it doesn’t feel that way.
The object of my faith must be Jesus.

How do you continue to grow into Jesus being the Object of your faith?Here are a few practices/habits:

Tell God about your storm and give Him the weight of it.
Memorize Bible verses that remind me of Jesus being the object of my faith.
Think about God’s attributes.
Think about the Names of God in the Bible.
Name your storms in City Group.

The Bible gives us a very helpful framework through which we can view our possessions. It is a set of biblical principles that we must hold in tension. Now, any of these principles taken alone will take you out of balance, but holding them all in tension together will provide you with a biblically sound and balanced approach to your money and possessions.

Ditches to avoid when it comes to how Christians view their possessions and money:

Ditch #1: God wants 10% of my money, and I can do whatever I want with the other 90%.
Ditch #2: I can’t enjoy spending money, because I should have given this money to someone in need.

Biblical principles

Jesus’ radical generosity toward us is a model for our radical generosity toward others.
God gives some people more, so they can share with those who have less.
God wants His people to enjoy what He’s given to them.
Money cannot make anyone happy.
It’s good to save money and build wealth.

Judging Others
Luke 6:37-42We have to be people of mercy. If we want to be set free emotionally and spiritually, we have to let Jesus change our tendency and desire to criticize and judge others. Mercy must defeat the desire to judge, to criticize, or to point out faults. The way of mercy is the way of Jesus, and this is the way we all long for.

Principle of Returning Judgment
If we go around judging people, we're inviting others to judge us too.
Notice your sin before critiquing their sin.
We notice their sin before our sin because of pride and shame.
But there is mercy for our mistakes. Jesus has not given up on us.
Evaluate your behavior and repent.
I need to address my sin before I address their sin.
We approach others with much more humility and love when we're aware of our own brokenness.

Be loving toward your enemies.We are to be people building bridges made of love. Applying bandages to society made of forgiveness, hope, mercy, and grace.
Freedom from anger.Jesus wants to free us from our sinful anger and hate so effectively that we’re able to love our enemies. Chronic guilt is the price we pay if we avoid internal change. Repentance is the way forward.
Ask yourself:
- Who doesn’t love me, but I really desire their love?
- Who do I have a hard time freely doing good to?
- Who do I have bitterness for?
Do the work to recognize the anger, engage the anger, and repent.

Spiritual Poverty- We are blessed when we put the totality of our hope for any spiritual gain in the person and work of Jesus Christ, not in ourselves.
Hunger for Righteousness- We are blessed when we have a deep, consuming, longing desire for the acceptance of God.
When we experience the true kingdom of God, then comes the worldly rejection- Blessed are you when you are different from the world, when you suffer on account of the Son of God.

Luke 5:27-32In this passage we see Jesus go out of His way to engage a sinner. This is what He's really about. He took on human form and came to earth to seek and save the lost. He’s inviting you to do the same; to open your home, to open your life, to invite people to Jesus across the table or at a party.

"Follow Me"
Jesus came to a man who routinely stole from his own people and called him to be His disciple. Matthew, right then, packed up and said Yes!
Starting a relationship with Jesus is accessible. Matthew took Jesus at His Word and started walking after Him. You can do that too!
Stop, engage, invite and have dinner with them
If you’re seeing what Jesus sees and doing what Jesus does, you’re engaging with everyone! Having meals with unchurched people for the purpose of them meeting Jesus is probably the best way for you to live on mission for Jesus!

We are loving and generous people because Jesus is loving and generous. Now He has sent us into Fort Worth, Texas to love people, to welcome people into our church and into our lives because we love them like Jesus loves us!

For God so loved: This is love that is stronger than death. God is love and He always acts in consistency with His character; therefore, He cannot stop loving you.
The whole world: God’s love crosses borders and barriers unlike any other force in the history of the world.
That whoever believes: Whoever means whoever. No matter what you’ve done; no matter your sin. Belief is a real trust in Jesus’ work and in His Person.
Should not perish but have eternal life: People who do not believe in Jesus will never experience life in its fullness here on earth, and they’ll be separated from God forever after this life.
God’s heart for you is salvation. Not condemnation. He sacrificed His own Son. Jesus willingly gave His life for you!
Jesus really loves people! God the Father sent God the Son, and now God the Son has empowered us with God the Spirit to reach this city and love others like He loves!

What we see in this passage is God’s master plan, from the very beginning, to corroborate Jesus’ credentials as the Messiah— the Christ. Every page of this perfect book is about Him… Jesus. And He wants you to know that He’s the Messiah, because He wants to save you!**

Jesus' Genealogy is important. Any claim to royalty back then had to been verified.
The real reason that God goes to such great lengths to show us that Jesus is His Son? LOVE.

So, the million-dollar question, how in the world do we avoid or get out of the crazy cycle?
