The Podcast that talks the art and craft of Nature Photography around the world. Presented and hosted by professional Nature Photographer and AIPP Double Master of Photography, Joshua Holko.
In this episode, I am kicking off a new series of deep dive episodes on wildlife species I have been photographing consistently over the last two decades. The purpose of this series is to share my thoughts and experiences photographing various animals in their natural environments around the world; to talk a little about the species, what has worked in photographing them, the time of year, equipment practices, etc. We begin with my favourite animal to photograph: Vulpes lagopus - the Arctic Fox.

In this episode, I discuss how white your snow should be on a print. There’s a lot of high-key photography in which the majority of the image is pure white. Snow, without texture and tone in a print, will appear pure white and can often look unreal. Meanwhile, the actual scene may have been overcast, rendering the snow greyer or bluer. Wildlife paintings often render snow as grey or blue. How should you approach this?

In this episode, I discuss my current approach to culling and editing thousands of RAW photographs, whether from a long day in the field or upon returning to the studio at the end of a trip. I cover the software I use, why I use it, how I choose my selects, what gets kept and what gets deleted. Culling and editing can be an extremely time-consuming part of the photographic process, but it is an absolutely critical stage in distilling the work to a manageable level while keeping only the very best.

In this episode, I offer a strong opinion about why the 'People's Choice Award' is a bad idea in photographic competitions. Such categories are never won by the 'best' photograph in class but are invariably taken out by whoever can scream the loudest on social media, 'Vote for Me!' This approach is the exact antithesis of why anyone should be entering a photographic competition, and such categories do little to foster the promotion of quality photography. Entering photography competitions should (if we enter for the right reasons) be about improving our work, growing as photographers through the feedback of our professional peers and competing against ourselves, and not worrying about social media popularity.

In this episode, I review Travel and Documentary photographer Richard L'Anson's new magnum opus - 'Way Down South'. A massive tome of a book containing the sum of Richard's work from Antarctica, the Falkland Islands, South Shetlands and South Georgia. This was an interesting and thoroughly enjoyable book for me to review, as it's a subject and region near and dear to my heart and my passion for the world's Polar regions.
Yesterday, I also released my new short film – Guardians of the Forest. Filmed over ten days in the Boreal Forest of Finland in Autumn, this film is about my journey photographing wolves and bears and my thoughts as a wildlife photographer. I hope you enjoy this passion project.

In this episode, I spend some time looking into what is coming up in 2026. Historically, I have done a very long blog post or podcast that is both a retrospective on the current year (the year that was) and a look forward into the new year. This year, I have decided to break it up into two more bite-sized chunks and have two separate podcasts. This episode looks ahead to 2026, with some thoughts on travel, equipment, and photography in general.
In other news, I was also appointed an Adobe Community Expert for both Lightroom and Photoshop this week. Which means I will now be on the Adobe community forums to answer Lightroom questions whenever I can. Feel free to PM me there if you have anything specific you want to ask.

In this episode, I review Daniel Bergmann's wonderful new book 'Birds in Iceland - A Visual Journey'. In case you want to skip the podcast (you shouldn't), I will give you the short of it - Buy it. It is a fabulous example of how a photographic book should be approached, designed and executed. Even more importantly, it's a visual journey of more than twenty years of outstanding bird photography by Iceland's leading bird photographer. This book transcends mere documentation and gives us wonderful insights into the genius of a master bird photographer.

In this episode, I round up the latest batch of news, including the exciting news that I have again made the semi-finals in Nature's Best Photography (more details to come when the finalists/winners are announced). The Svalbard Winter expedition 2026 is now sold out, and we have only a few places left on our Winter Pallas Cat workshop to Mongolia in January. I also have my thoughts on the Canon EOS R1, having shot with it in the field for more than 8 months (also recently published to Canon Rumours). Some additional information on my upcoming exhibition in Sharjah in the UAE next January 2026, and lastly, my preparations and thoughts for the forthcoming Spain and Finland workshops.

In this episode, I take a moment to acknowledge the passing of Sebastião Salgado - a photographer whose work documented mankind's destruction of our planet. Those of you familiar with Sebastião’s photography will already know that he specialised in humanitarian documentary photojournalism. You may not be aware however that he was incredibly active in conservation in Brazil and that he was responsible for the replantation of millions of trees and the reconstruction of an entire ecosystem. Perhaps his most well known book ‘Workers: An Archaeology of the Industrial Age‘ should be required reading for every photographer. This short video in which Sebastião discusses his career and his photography is well worth fifteen minutes of your time. It is a remarkable insight into a truly remarkable photographer. Watch the video here: VIDEO Also in this episode, discuss my upcoming back-to-back trips for the Atlantic Puffin in Iceland as well as the 18-day expedition to Svalbard for Polar Bears in the pack ice. These three trips present some unique equipment challenges making packing a difficult compromise.

In this episode, I touch on some recent Travel Photographer of the Year competition news and dive into a really interesting email I received last week from a regular reader and follower of my work, the crux of which is included below:
'Hey Josh, You know I love your photography as this isn't my first email :-). You have a unique minimalist style that really sets your work apart; its truly wonderful that you not only find and create such amazing photographic art in this insane world but that you help others also achieve their photo dreams. But something has been bothering me and its these other workshop leaders who seem to be copying everything you do. I have followed you for years and watched you lead unique first of their kind trips for Arctic Fox, Greenland winter, Pallas Cat in Mongolia and more. I have also watched others copy exactly what you do. I am sure you are aware of it, but I get quite annoyed on your behalf when I see these others market themselves as 'the first', or 'class leading' or whatever term they choose to use. I have no idea if it bothers you, but I hope you continue to look forward and not back. Keep up the incredible work. I know there are many others out there who feel the same as me about your work and how you are being copied. I just wanted you to know you had some support out there and that we have your back."
Firstly, thank you so much to the author for the wonderful words about my own work. Hugely appreciated. After I received this email, I had to think long and hard about how I felt about this topic. I had a subsequent follow-up email discussion with the author, and we both decided that this topic was worthy of a podcast. It's bound to be somewhat divisive, and perhaps that's what is required at this juncture? I am unsure, and I certainly don't want to come across as arrogant, but what I do know is that I have no rear-vision mirror of consequence for those who choose to follow in this field. I have always looked forward, and I believe it's firmly up to the person choosing and booking a workshop, whether they want to go with someone who chooses to lead in their field - or someone who follows the crumbs. Every person can and should decide who they travel with and why. Just one of the many reasons it's so important to do your homework when booking any trip. As they say, onward, forward and ever upward....

In this episode, I look back at the incredible year 2024, the travel, the countries, experiences, and photographs, and I look forward to travelling and participating in workshops in 2025. 2025 kicks off in just a few days with travel from Australia to Mongolia for back-to-back workshops for Pallas Cat and Snow Leopard in both the far east and west of this amazing country. This will be quickly backed up by two back-to-back Arctic Fox workshops in the far north of Iceland. It's promising to be a huge year, and I am super keen to get underway.
If I had to sum up 2024 in one word, it would be ‘gratitude.’ I am grateful to have shared my passion for photography with many like-minded individuals. I am likewise grateful for a safe and prosperous year and for the incredible experiences throughout the year. My sincere thanks to all who travelled and participated in one of my trips this year; it was beautiful to have such fantastic shared experiences. It was an incredible year of travel and photography that sometimes left me breathless at the pace and intensity. Don’t forget to check out my twelve favourite photographs for the year HERE.
Last and certainly not least, I wish all of you a very safe and happy New Year, and may 2025 be one of health, happiness and one of travel, amazing light, and experiences for all of you. See you in the New Year!

In this episode, I give my thoughts (a short short rant) on YouTube 'Click Bait' titles in relation to the as-yet-unreleased Canon EOS R1 camera. As of today, the 26th of October, 2024, there are no production Canon EOS R1 cameras in the hands of end users or YouTubers in Australia (according to my reliable source at Canon Australia). Production EOS R1 Cameras are still slated for mid-November delivery, and any EOS R1 cameras currently in the field in Australia are pre-production models. I also discuss a fascinating visit to a wildlife park here in Sweden called Nordens Ark that is doing work with Pallas cat research and preservation.

I have just published episode 104 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I discuss my thoughts on the new Canon EOS R5 MK2 camera now that I have had an opportunity to use the camera in the Arctic for several weeks of intense photography (Eastern Greenland and South Western Iceland). I first tested the camera back in September in Australia over three days of landscape photography down the Great Ocean Road. During this shoot, I was photographing only from a tripod and had not yet shot handheld with the camera in my preferred polar environment. My initial impressions from this shoot in Australia were all positive, and I was very keen to get the camera up to Greenland to see how it performed. After shooting with the camera in Eastern Greenland and Iceland for the last three weeks, I have (perhaps surprisingly) concluded that this camera is not for me. The files are excellent at low to moderate ISO (ISO800 and below) but fall far short of those from the EOS R3 at ISO800 and above. Since most of my photography is at moderate to high ISO (typically 800 and above), this is a significant factor in my decision-making process. Of more importance, however, is that the ergonomics of the EOS R5MK2 just don't suit my size hands or my style of shooting. It is a wonderful camera that will undoubtedly make many people happy - but it isn't for me. Find out more in this podcast.

I also have a short rant about the current state of YouTube inspired by a comment tweeted by my friend Craig: 'You Tube is a Cancer'. And, of course, this is episode 100 of the podcast, so I take a moment to reflect back on the previous 99 episodes and discuss the future of the podcast.

In this episode, I discuss the consumption of Nature vs, appreciation of Nature after a recent, somewhat sour 'tourist' experience during a tour in the Cango caves in South Africa. Apologies in advance, but I somehow managed to screw up the numbering of these podcasts and refer to this episode as number 89 during the recording when it is, in fact, episode 99. That was most probably jet lag.

In this episode, I briefly update my Namibia workshop, which I wrapped up a couple of days ago (an amazing group and a fantastic trip). I then dive into the Canon EOS R1 Development Announcement, the 'incorrect' Adorama specifications that were unfortunately published worldwide, and discuss the actual resolution and some of specifications of the camera from an inside source.

In this episode, I discuss (ok, I rant) how the airlines take advantage of their customers, maximising their profits at their customer's expense. I also delve into my upcoming Namibia and Zululand workshops and discuss the camera equipment I am taking with me. Lastly, I also discuss my thoughts on the many rumour websites and YouTube channels (more of which are popping up daily) related to as-yet unreleased or unannounced photographic equipment.

In this episode, I briefly wrap up my recent February Arctic Fox workshop at the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the far north of Iceland and give my thoughts on cold weather gloves for Nature photographers. As a specialist Polar photographer and over the years of trying many different pairs, I have some experience with what works and what doesn't when it comes to shooting in cold climates. If you shoot a Canon EOS R3 or 1 1DXMK3 with the touch-sensitive AF button in cold weather, you are going to want to listen to this podcast.

I have just published Episode #88, Season 4, of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I retrospectively look back at the travel and workshops from 2023 and dive into the 2024 year of travel ahead. During the year 2023, I guided twelve different workshops and expeditions around the world, as well as several private workshops and multiple print and processing workshops. Links to the 2023 Trip Reports are included below. My book pick of the year is Vincent Munier's new masterpiece 'Munier' (Podcast review coming very soon) and my gear pick of the year is the Canon RF 100-500mm lens. Also included is the news of an exciting new ambassadorship appointment with Mr. Jan Gear (I will have more to say on that topic in a future blog post). Lastly, my favourite photographs from 2023 can be seen online HERE.

In my Wild Nature Photography Podcast's latest season (season 4) for 2024, I wrap up my just completed January Pallas Cat expedition to Mongolia's eastern Steppe region in Winter. I will have a full written trip report on this expedition in the next few days, along with some photographs, but I wanted to get my initial thoughts down in a podcast while they are still fresh in my mind (2023 Trip Report). I will be returning again to the far east of Mongolia to lead a workshop to photograph these amazing cats in January of 2025. The expedition will run from January 4th to January 10th 2025, and is for those photographers looking to get out into the wilderness to photograph these incredible felines. Drop me an email if you would like more information.

In this podcast episode, I wrap up my 2023 Antarctica expedition with some initial thoughts on this incredible trip (full trip report coming soon), give my thoughts on a short scouting trip to Easter Island, and review the 2023 Podcast year. Although I did not squeeze in as many Podcasts as I would have liked in 2023, I managed to get a new episode out almost every two weeks with an average of 2.08 (much better than I first thought). The podcast was downloaded across a total of 67 countries over the course of the year, with the USA topping the charts for the most downloads. The most downloaded episode was the Ethical Use of Drones in Wildlife Photography, which was published on the 11th of July, 2023. Of course, I will be endeavouring to improve on those statistics in 2024 with more episodes with even higher quality content. In this episode, I also cover the recently published January 2024 edition of the UK's EOS magazine, which featured my photography on the front cover, as well as an extended feature on my Polar photography. Also recently published was a second feature on my photography in Food and Travel magazine.

In this episode, I discuss what equipment I am taking with me to Antarctica next week, as well as my packing strategy and decision not to purchase Canon's new RF10-20mm Lens. This will probably be the last podcast before I depart for Antarctica next week - although I will do my best to get in my review of either Volume 8 of Bird Photographer of the Year or Vincent Munier's new retrospective 'Munier'.

I have just published episode #83 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this long overdue episode (apologies for the significant delay), I give my thoughts on two new Canon Lenses, the RF 10-20mm and the yet-to-be-officially-announced 200-800mm telephoto lens (look for the official announcement of this lens in the next few days). I also briefly discuss the new HDR feature in the latest version of Adobe Lightroom and the excellent new Point Colour / HSL local adjustment capability that is now available inside the individual masking tools in Lightroom. I also give my initial impressions of the 8th edition of the Bird Photographer of the Year annual book (includes three of my commended photographs) and Scott Portelli's new Antarctica book (reviews of both will be coming in future podcast episodes). Additionally, I provide details of my upcoming webinar for BenQ on post-production. This webinar will be held on the 8th of November and is free (you just need to register). I also discuss the main topic of this episode: what happens when serendipity meets technology and my experience photographing the European Pygmy Owl in near total darkness in northern Finland with the Canon EOS R3 and Canon RF600mm f4L IS USM lens. By way of preview, the European Pygmy Owl will be the November photograph of the month for 2023.

I have just published Episode #63 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast . In this episode, I discuss packing and equipment for my Arctic Fox expedition in the Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in north-western Iceland as well as discuss the often maligned Canon RF 100-500mm f4.5-7.1 IS L series lens. This is a lens I was not too keen on initially based on its variable f-stop, but recent tests have made me a complete convert. This lens is a must-have for Canon wildlife photographers.

I have just published Episode #61 of my Wild Nature Photography Podcast. In this episode, I briefly wrap up our fantastic Pallas Cat expedition in the far east of Mongolia in Winter (full trip report coming soon) and then move on to a significant rant about the total lack of customer service and care from what is supposed to be Australia's number-one premier airline - Qantas. The total lack of customer support, lack of care, and total focus on profit at all costs is an embarrassment to Australia. I have been a Qantas Platinum flyer (a status that is apparently utterly worthless) for nearly ten years. I have spent many tens of thousands of dollars annually with the airline over the last decade. Today was the final straw, with Qantas providing me an unworkable connection time of just twenty minutes in Helsinki as their solution to a change in their flight schedules. Apparently, I am expected to land in Helsinki from Reykjavik and change to my international flight to Doha in twenty minutes. An absolutely impossible transit time. Their solution when I pointed this out was, I quote, 'We are sorry; that is all we can offer you. You can speak with the service desk when you arrive in Helsinki.' My answer is to vote with my wallet and take my business elsewhere. In summary, I am absolutely done with Qantas and will no longer book future travel with them if I can avoid it. Sayonara Qantas.

As is tradition on my blog, every year I do a “What’s in Store” post for the new year as well as reflect back, and wrap up the year that was. 2021 was quite frankly a disastrous year for just about everyone and when I look back at the calamitous results of the COVID pandemic I can categorically say I am very glad to see the back of 2021. Historically, I have always done this as a written blog post, but because of the extended length, I have decided to move my Wrap post to the Podcast format.
2021 was a year that included just one travel destination, that was Finland for my Wolves and Wolverines workshop (Read the Trip Report). The rest of the year was more or less spent in various stages of COVID lockdown.
