I’ve worked with older adults for a long time, and if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: the hardest conversations are often the most necessary. We plan for weddings, retirements, even vacations—but not for how we want to be cared for when we can’t speak for ourselves.

That’s why I invited Kate DeBartolo, Senior Director at the Institute for Healthcare Improvement, to join me for a powerful, practical conversation about how to talk with your loved ones about your wishes for care through the end of life. Spoiler alert: it's not really about dying—it's about how you want to live.

When you think about sunlight, you probably picture warm summer days — not a cutting-edge medical treatment. But as recent research reveals, specific wavelengths of UV light can help calm runaway inflammation, a key driver behind autoimmune diseases.

In this conversation, John MacMahon, co-founder of Cytokind and veteran medical device entrepreneur, shares how a dermatology treatment for psoriasis led to groundbreaking results for MS, COVID, and other inflammatory conditions. • What you can do today to naturally boost your regulatory T cells (hint: it’s free)

If you or someone you love is living with an autoimmune condition, this episode could open the door to a whole new way of thinking about treatment and prevention.

We’ve all heard of the dreaded “midlife crisis”. But what if it didn’t need to be a crisis at all—but a motivating awakening?

Michael Clinton is a former Hearst Magazine publisher and bestselling author. He is best known for his book, ROAR, which encourages people to develop new identities and personas for themselves beyond the roles of partner, parent, and career. Clinton had an epiphany that led him to make changes to his life in his mid-forties, such as taking flying lessons, starting a vineyard, and becoming a marathon runner. He is a strong advocate for lifelong learning, rejecting the traditional notion of retiring, and replacing words such as “midlife crisis” with “midlife awakening.” Clinton has also conducted research at Yale University that shows that people with a positive attitude towards aging live longer and spend less time and money in the health care system.

On this episode, host Cathleen Toomey interviews Michael about the concept of life layering and how it can help people live a more meaningful and fulfilled life. Michael encourages people to pursue lifelong learning and reject the traditional notion of retiring.

Michael also discusses research conducted at Yale University that shows that people with a positive attitude towards aging live longer and spend less time and money in the health care system. He believes that the Boomer generation will lead the charge in changing old-fashioned attitudes towards aging. He also encourages people to start a counter-culture movement against ageism.

She also explains how writing letters can help us take responsibility for our actions and lead to forgiveness. Nancy also shares stories about the impact of writing thank you letters, such as a woman who wrote 100 letters in 100 days and her friend who wrote 50 letters for her 50th birthday.

Nancy also talks about how writing these letters made her feel calmer, more centered, and relaxed, and how it changed her attitude towards life. Lastly, Nancy talks about refraining from posting photos on social media when it is not her news to share, her guilty pleasure, her favorite healthy practice, her favorite source of laughter, the last book she loved, and her favorite escape.

Dr. Michelle Rozen knows a thing or two about change—but she’s also figured out a way to not only embrace it, but use it to help her thrive.

Show NotesHave things felt a bit stagnant in your life? Many seniors feel that way too. But sometimes, it can be due to our own decision making.

In this episode of Seniority Authority, Cathleen interviews Dr. Michelle Rozen, a change consultant and PhD in Psychology from NSU who has written a book called Two Second Decisions. Dr. Rozen explains that craving change in life can lead to amazing things and that fear of change is largely physiological. We’ll talk about how she suggests making specific and granular changes and repeating them for 30-45 days to create a neural pathway in the brain—and what that can do to our decisions.

Dr. Rozen also encourages people to find their special purpose and passion in life and how to use the “two second decisions” technique to make quick, winning choices!

"I just tell them, like, you need to pick your lane, because not everybody is the same here, and they have very different outlooks on their future, and you need to understand that before you start trying to talk to people."

David Stewart is the founder of AGEIST, an agency that specializes in marketing to older adults. He is also a world-renowned photographer and has been featured in Vogue, New York Times Magazine, and other publications.

This is David Stewart's story...

David Stewart was a world-renowned photographer who began to notice a disconnect between the way older adults were being represented in the media and the way they actually looked and felt. He decided to start his own agency, AGEIST, to change the way businesses thought about and marketed to older adults. Now, businesses come to AGEIST for help understanding how to correctly communicate with and develop products for the 50+ population. Stewart and his team have identified a small group of 18% of this population who they feel are the most open to new ideas and who they focus their messaging on. Despite the fact that this group is not representative of the entire 50+ population, Stewart believes that by changing the way this group thinks about aging, the rest of the population will follow.

In this episode, you will learn:

  1. David Stewart's experience as a world-traveling photographer and how it led him to notice a disconnect between how older adults are represented in the media and advertising, and how they are actually living their lives.

  2. The challenge businesses face in understanding and marketing to a highly fragmented population of older adults with diverse backgrounds, interests, and needs.

  3. The importance of expanding people's imagination of what is possible as they age, and how this can lead to positive changes in attitudes and perceptions about aging.

Today’s episode topic is thanks to a listener suggestion on the topic of bereavement.

Today’s guest, Dr. Toni Miles, is an expert on the field of bereavement, fellow on the Gerontological Society of America, faculty on the University of Georgia College of Public Health, MD and PhD from Howard University, and recognized as a national expert on chronic health epid, gerontology, and bereavement. She has researched the topic of bereavement since 2012 and her work is used by a number of efficacy groups. Her team has disseminated best practices on bereavement care and trains healthcare professionals on bereavement, and has recently been quoted by the Wall Street Journal.

On today’s episode, Dr. Toni and I talk about her decade of studying bereavement and public health and translating her understanding of bereavement so our listeners can put it into practice. Practices like reversing the assumption that most bereaved people are older adults, how to talk to people who are grieving (don’t tell them how to feel - just listen!), and the major health benefits of going for a walk with someone who is grieving. We also discuss generational differences in bereavement, how to talk about your own eventual death, and best practices for showing up for the grieving people in your life (hint: bring healthy food, and stay off social media).

Episode 43: True confessions: I love to sing. (Note that I didn’t say people would want to hear me singing, but singing to me is a joyful expression!) In high school I tried out for every musical, and was roundly rejected! But as an adult, I found a local singing group to join, Voices from the Heart, and it was a fabulous experience.

Even if you’re no Pavarotti, there are so many health benefits to singing that it’s worth forging ahead despite any initial embarrassment. In fact, singing can provide concrete benefits if you have Parkinson’s or other vocal or breathing challenges.

Today’s guest, Angelynne Hinson, has decades of experience as a regional soprano soloist in a wide variety of genres. She has been a member of a critically acclaimed classical vocal duo as well as an award-winning a cappella jazz quartet. She has spent more than 25 years in voice instruction, rehabilitation, workshop development, and has created arts education curriculum for many regional programs.

Jeremy grew up in a small town in Ontario and went to school in Montreal, Quebec at McGill University. He initially thought he’d become a doctor only to decide two years into college that he didn’t want to spend 10 more years in school. So, he dropped out and decided he’d help older adults. He and his friends spent a year living in a nursing home, and the result of their year was a product called Sensassure, which Jeremy piloted, perfected, and marketed. He sold that company and has started a new journey with his next venture, called Bloom — an online community of adults 50+ who are looking to redefine their new phase of life.

In today’s episode, Jeremy chats with Cathleen about his passion for solving the real-life problems of older adults. He discusses how his year with nursing home residents inspired the creation of Sensassure, and, once that company was sold, his new inspiration. Jeremy’s new company is called Bloom, which started as a meetup group focused on connecting like-minded 50+ adults. Bloom is now on a mission to change the aging narrative and redefine retirement. Steele began his professional life as a physicist. Growing up, he was fascinated by space, just like many other scientists. It was after his Ph.D. in physics from the University of Oxford that he decided that aging was the single most important scientific challenge of our time, and switched fields to computational biology.

In this episode, Andrew chats with Cathleen about developing therapies that are bound to eliminate the physical and mental decline associated with aging, what occurs biologically as we age, as well as practical ways we can slow down the process. The hope isn’t that we get to live longer for the sake of it, it is that we live longer in good health.
