Here are the steps you can use as a guide
Lectio- Read. Just listen to the reading passively.
Meditatio- Listen to the reading again, this time paying special attention to any words or phrases that grab your attention. And pay special attention to your response to the words or phrases.
Oratio - Now follow that feeling or response to the words and lean into a conversation with God. It may help to go back and listen again, putting yourself on the scene as a character. Do you have questions for God? Do you have any special requests to ask of Him?
Contemplatio- Go back and listen again if you need. In this step spend some time in His wounded and Sacred Heart. A Heart wounded by betrayal. Wounded by our sins. Wounded and yet entirely loving. Let His love wash over you. Let your contrition wash over Him. Bathe Him in your contrite tears. Make a promise to never sin again. Entrust your heart to His.

When my brother was dying a Jewish friend of mine said "Y'all are so devout, why is God punishing you so much?" Her thinking was- if someone follows God, they should be exempt from worldly suffering. But that also means the flip side would be true- if someone doesn't follow God, then they should have heaps of worldly suffering.

Through the car keys and empty Brita pitchers. Through the butter left out of the fridge and dogs wanting out. Can we see the salvation in banana bread? In shoes left helter skelter after a morning spent "Parkouring"? Can we hear Jesus calling us along the path when we see that pile of wet towels? never ending wet towels.

For the people of Isreal
I memorized this prayer last summer when our church had a competition for the Feast of St John. We have this big bonanza- bon fire, dunk tank, live music, food (locusts and honey), and fellowship. It's fun times on the longest day of the year!
Since we've moved to the lake my mornning routine looks a bit different. We have a well so every morning I have to fill our 5 gallon water filter resevoir. I decided early on to couple this daily routine with prayer and I figured the Canticle of Zechariah would be good. As water pours out from the faucet and into the pitcher that I will then carry and dump into the filter the words begin almost automatically. But this morning I listened a bit differently.
As I prayed it this morning I wondered..."what would the Jews think of these words as they sit litereally in the darkness of death's shadow."
Blessed be the Lord, the God of Isreal
for he has visted and brought
redemption to his people
He has raised up a horn of salvation
from within the house of David, his servent
as he promised through the mouths
of his holy prophets from of old
salvation from our enemies
and freedom from those who hate us,
to show mercy to our fathers,
and to be mindful of his holy covenant

St Ignatius of Loyola began the four step process that is widely used, loved, and called The Examen. Use this four step process to return to God- to reconcile - as you move towards sleep. Come to God and place your contrite soul before Him. Thank Him for all the blessings of the day, and ask forgiveness for anything done wrong. Find yourself soothed and ready to head to sleep after you've placed the cares and worries of tomorrow into The Father's capable hands.

This was such an odd Lectio. We didn't start out by inviting the Holy Spirit in and boy, did I feel it! Don't worry, we figured it out about halfway through and the Blessed HS fixed the problem for us!
Join two Elizabeth's as we do Lectio Divina of Matthew 1:16, 18-21, 24 My new church friend, Elizabeth, thankfully didn't think I was too much of a freak when I invited her to be a guest this week!
Hopefully I didn't scare her off! She's really fun and very open to the Holy Spirit's movements.
A big thing I took away from her insightful sharing was God calling us to embrace our sins. Our failures often tell more about who we are than our successes. They also can bring us closer to Him- which is always a good thing!

My nephew Kolbe stopped by the house to record this one with me. He is no stranger to audio tech and microphones. I would call him my IT man with regard to all things audio tech. He is a musician- you can find him on Spotify- Drive Thru Pasta.
This week we discuss what faith is- how it works and the many different spots we've been at on our faith journey. Kolbe is currently in a "deconstruction/discovery" point in his journey. And I'm so glad he wanted to sit down and do Lectio Divina with us.
I'm solo on this one.
Well, Tuna is in the studio with me. He's my 3 month old lab puppy, who is recovering from femur surgery. I tell the story of how he fell out of the truck and broke his leg.
He's recovering quickly, as puppies will.

Is there someone or something that you place more of your trust in- than you do with Jesus? This reading will cause you to ask some fierce questions of yourself.
Gigi kicks us off for Lectio Divina for the 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time.
We read about what Jesus teaches His disciples about marriage and divorce and then Jesus blesses the children.
I share my gratitude for being a woman and Gigi imagines what it would have been like to be that child, be blessed, and then see Jesus die.

Rebecca first talks about life as an OBGyn who believes. She shares how sometimes it's hard to be a scientist who practices Christianity and be surrounded by unbelievers and skeptics. On the flip side her practice is in a location where finances aren't plenty and she witnesses the amazingly deep faith many of her patients have, even when facing trials. During Lectio Elizabeth and Nina are touched by the difference between the translations. Some say "receive a child" and some say "welcome a child".
Nina asks herself, "how can I be more welcoming?"
Elizabeth commits to a pilgrimage to beauty.
The famous John 3:16! Who does not know it? We all know it with our minds. But do we know it with our hearts?
Elizabeth and fellow swim mom Carolina crack open the famous passage and find new a fresh angles that God has customized for them this day.

Friends and neighbors, Katie and Elizabeth do Lectio Divina with Katie's family heirloom vintage bible collection.
They banter a bit about how memory goes as aging happens with our loved ones. How keepsakes can sometimes weigh us down if we aren't keeping it for the right reasons.

Trusting in the Lord because He has the words of eternal life. Stay with Him- stay with the source and the summit of your faith- His body, blood, and divinity. "Will you also leave me?"
Do not abandon the Lord and His priceless gift of self in the Eucharist.
Tracy, from Be Not Afraid, joins Elizabeth on this one. Be Not Afraid is an outreach and support ministry that serves families who have received a poor prenatal diagnosis. Tracy was Elizabeth's peer support in 2010 after she received a diagnosis of Trisomy 13 with her 7th pregnancy- Jedidiah. They doctors deemed Jedidiah "incompatible with life" and encouraged Elizabeth to terminate and "move on". Be Not Afraid offered such immense and invaluable support to Elizabeth and her family and through the years Elizabeth has turned and helped out as a peer for other moms experiencing similar diagnoses.
Be Not Afraid is currently being considered for Our Sunday Visitors's ministry competition- where OSV will choose a ministry to fund with $100, 000. But first they have to make a pitch in front of investors- like Shark Tank.
Elizabeth does Lectio Divina with her 9 year old son.
But first they banter about ramen and John complains about the indecency of Michelangelo's David.
When exposing the younger kids to Lectio Divina- or anyone for that matter- it's important to not push. Just lay it out there and meet them where they are at.

Rebecca is touched by a call for rest and peace. She prays that the Congo can experience the peace that Jesus calls us to when he calls His apostles "into the hills".
Elizabeth is called into thinking of what Jesus might be thankful for when He gives thanks and breaks the bread and blesses the few fish that lad shared.
Elizabeth and fellow homeschool big family mom friend, Stacy, read Mark 6:30-34.
They discuss the mother-daughter retreat Stacy and her daughter went on at Sister Servants of the Eternal Word.
During Lectio Divina they are touched by the words "rest" and "lonely place". It leads them to look to adding adoration to their weekly routine.
Elizabeth and her sister Denise enjoy some gospel of Mark on a hot day in summer. Denise is a very gifted and effective English teacher/swim coach/soccer coach. They open themselves up to a more trustful surrender. They talk about what road tripping with a cloistered nun looks like. Denise shares her daily prayer of surrender.
Elizabeth's niece, Chris, joins her for Lectio Divina for the 14th week of ordinary time.

Elizabeth and her brother, Father Kevin Peek, open their hearts to Mark 4:26-34.
Fr Kevin is a priest of the Archdiocese of Atlanta and also serves as a chaplain in the Georgia National Guard.
He opens up about the struggle he has with Lectio Divina as a male who was never encouraged as a child to listen to his emotions.
Elizabeth and her nephew talk about the state soccer playoffs and then dive into Lectio Divina on John's gospel on the lancing of Jesus's side as he hung on the cross.
