Barrie
We met when we were young and didn’t know anything,
The world was full of adventure waiting just for us.
All the right things were done,
Careers with an abundance of friends.
They couldn’t help but reproduce,
Like it was some hilarious joke.
Not for us it seemed, no matter how hard we tried.
Eventually we decided to live and love anyway.
Our friends met milestones we would never see,
But nothing stood in our way as long as we had eachother.
No one could stop us,
Until something did.
It snuck up like a current under the waves.
We had faced hardship before,
But this ship.
Was one that could not be righted, hitched or secured.
Once she lost all her hair and half her weight,
She finally had enough and let the current take her away.
I persevered with my simple life,
Through every Christmas,
Anniversary and event though it was never the same.
The thing that hurts the most,
The ultimate injustice.
Is none of it’s true,
She story I tell myself and anyone who asks,
To justify this life,
Out here on my own.
Where the land fades, till there’s nothing left but the sea.

The Market
It was a place of vibrant colours, smells and sounds.
We collided for brief moments of commerce,
All Shapes and sizes.
From livestock
To springs for watches,
Musicians and actors to entertain.
Beside the ferris wheel
And candy floss
Machines.
We didn’t notice
The restrictions at first,
Just a few minor inconveniences
For the greater good.
The divisions
Started with the regions,
Then friends couldn't be seen mingling
If one was from this town
Or that.
Eventually we locked the gates
And walked away.
A few of us tried to restart it
But It’s too hard to relight a flame
That has long been
Stamped out.

The Walls
We built them ourselves
With sticks and stones and anything we could find
To keep the others out
Eventually the sticks turned to iron
And the stones became reinforced concrete
The walls were no longer there to keep them out
But to keep us in
Afraid
Paranoid
Ready to lay blame on anyone but those responsible
They left a long time ago
Up there in their towers of silver and gold
Looking down on us as we scrape out a living in the dirt
Some of us still know how to get out
Every wall has a weakness
Every system has a blind spot
There is always hope
There is always a way

This is a poem I wrote in my early twenties, which has been interesting to revisit now that I'm older and hopefully more mature.
