Pilots, Alcohol, Aviation and Addiction These are not 4 words that we typically want to associate together. Yet, it's a real thing, and somewhat of a hidden epidemic.
Today, David and Chelsey Shaffer step forward to share their story and offer hope and help to other Pilot, Pilot Wives and anyone questioning their own use, or abuse of alcohol. The pandemic not only increased alcohol consumption by 30-40%, but excessive drinking by 21% according to a Harvard study.
Watch the Video Here.
Alcohol use and abuse is not exclusive to careers nor excluded by some, including commercial airline and other pilots. As I have worked with pilot wives and other clients, these stories often come out, cloaked in fear, shame, guilt and a sense that something is wrong with us.
David and Chelsey share some key points:
Seeking help and eliminating the fear and stigma
The HIMS Program for Aviation
The Importance of Knowing How to Navigate Help Strategically and Avoid Pitfalls
Probably 4-5 Times the Number of Pilots Actually Need Help Who Are Not in the Program
Pilot Wives - We know this involves you, too, and we see it in the Pilot Wife Groups
Help is Confidential so No Fear
The Fear of Mental Health Disclosure on an Aviation First Class Medical
The Recovery Programs WANT You to Succeed
No Affect on Future Career or Getting Hired By a Legacy Carrier and Keeping Your Ability to Fly For a Career
And, more. David was drinking 6 "Handles" of alcohol a week - a handle of liquor is a 1.75 L bottle of liquor. That means each one has 39 1.5-ounce shots in it. So, we are talking almost 240 shots a week. You do the math.
Today, he is well, recovered and helping others!

There is no doubt that the aviation community has a culture of alcohol. Let's talk about some of the ways we use, think about and question alcohol in our lives.
This is a judgement free zone, and considering any of this does not mean you are an alcoholic; that you have a problem with alcohol, or anything you don't want it to mean. It's just a chance to become aware, and more intentional and clean up your body a little as we head into the holidays!

So, who is it for?
It’s for anyone who may have had any of these thoughts or questions:
Am I happy with when and how much I drink?
Do I over drink?
WHY do I drink so much?
Is alcohol affecting my health? My sleep? My sex life - OH, I got some GOOD stuff around sex and alcohol.
Is alcohol having an impact on my children? My marriage and relationships?
Is alcohol keeping this extra weight on my body?
Is alcohol relieving my stress and anxiety or adding to it? You may be surprised by some of the science and data I have to share on that.
You may also wonder:
What will people say? Think? Do? How will they react? Will I get unfriended? Will I still be invited and fit in socially?

Jealousy is a super hungry emotion that needs to keep being fed.
Be willing to communicate your needs - connection, loneliness,
Desires, fears and boundaries - communicate ahead of time.

Pilot Chris Lowery and his wife, Terri share their inspiring story. Just look at the photos! Actually, Intermittent Fasting is PERFECT for pilots and others in Aviation, especially with food challenges in airports and on the go.
This is NOT medical advice so always check with your doctor, first, before starting an Intermittent Fasting program as a pilot.
We reference Dr. Jason Fung, and his team told me - Intermittent Fasting is no different for pilots. Obviously, if you feel HANGRY, eat.

Finding joy in the journey, one step at a time. The Mastaler family found themselves in the spotlight, but not in a way they could have ever imagined.
In 2015, Michael’s police dog attacked Hunter, their oldest son. The bite was so severe they were forced to amputate his left leg below the knee. Seeing their names and pictures in news articles and stories across the world was mortifying. All they wanted was privacy and to recover in peace.
As healing occurred and Hunter adapted, they felt inspired to share their journey of hope and finding joy. They knew they were more than a tragedy.
Michael then went on to pursue aviation as a career, thus her pilot wife status. This story will bring you to tears and lift you up with joy, all in less than an hour!

“Contrails - contrails are evidence you were there. Contrails are simply what you leave behind.” Erika Armstrong , A Chick in the Cockpit
Erika Armstrong became a pilot by accident, after going to work for a FBO to pay college bills. She fell in love with the aviation profession, the smell of jet fuel and the tales of various pilots who she crossed paths with.
One flight lesson later and the rest is history. Erika Armstrong was addicted.
We cover the 2 strong women who shaped her career, one for the good, how the 99s helped her get hours, and then an opposing female force, who tried to derail Erika’s career by holding her back because she was a woman, and “the corporate clients may not be comfortable with a woman pilot…”
Being the token female in a male dominated industry like aviation. Maybe only 6% of the pilot workforce are female, and a smaller number are captains.
How do we encourage, educate and attract the next generation of female pilots. It’s such a great time to get into the industry with the pilot shortage out there.
How late is too late to shift careers and become an airline pilot?
What are the characteristics of a good pilot:
Age and wisdom are great. Life experiences.
Are pilots more likely to cheat and what goes on in Aviation?
98% of the male pilots and men in aviation along Erika’s path were amazing and so encouraging and helpful of her career.
Erika, unfortunately made a poor choice in her husband, who ended up being an abuser, both physically and psychologically. He manipulated her to the point of giving up her career, and ultimately putting into a position of losing her pilot’s license.
Thankfully, it was resolved and cleared off her record.
How the system itself let Erika down and failed her. The importance of your female network of friends. And, being a mentor and source for other women.
We explore how Erika dealt with motherhood and the extreme stress and challenges placed on her as a new mom and a pilot, leaving her child for days at a time.
The struggles, even today, with childcare and accommodating working mothers.
Compartmentalizing - this is a known part of most pilot personalities and males, and how this plays into Erika’s personality. Low neuroticism and how pilots can remain calm during emergencies and not freak out.
Situational awareness - conscious acknowledgement of your surroundings and understanding them vs remaining on auto pilot.
Multi tasking and how women are great at much of this.
A and B students vs C students - who is more risk averse and who can handle risk?
What inspired writing “A Chick in the Cockpit”? Stories like Eat Pray Love and Wild, sharing those challenges and stories that we as women and the human spirit endures and grows through.
Are there life lessons? Do things happen for a reason? What does the future hold for Erika Armstrong - all good things!

No one of course wants to go into marriage thinking about divorce, and yet that statistic is high. The 2020 stat states: Despite the fact that the rate of marriage is declining faster than rates of divorce, experts predict that somewhere between 40 and 50% of all marriages existing today will ultimately end in divorce.
Aviation Marriages and Pilot Divorces are likely no different, thus we title the show: Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome with Laughlin Legal, PC.
A little research reveals:
Pilot Divorce Ratet - 30.5%
Just as with flight attendants, the pilot divorce rate is high at 30.5%. Divorce is so common among pilots that there's a term for it in the industry: Aviation Induced Divorce Syndrome.
Joining me today fromLaughlin Legal, PC. is:
Amy Laughlin, Rose Jamili:, Caitlin Ly and Stephanie Huang
We cover:
Overall divorce statistics
Most Common Reasons for Divorce
Prenuptial Agreements
When family assets are involved
Should you get a therapist FIRST?
Mental Health
How to find details for your state and should you just rely on Google or a good friend's advice?
Laughlin Legal is licensed in California, be aware, and nothing on the show should be considered, nor is it legal advice of counsel.

Life is full of lessons and learning. Today, my guest Charity shares her story of an unfaithful pilot. While it’s shocking because it is not your typical story. It involves prostitution and escort services. And, as ironic as it sounds, it also provides great insight into staying more present in the marriage, on both sides.
Listen to Part 1
As I’ve shared, when I launched the podcast and began asking in the Pilot Wife communities what topics they wanted to hear, pilot infidelity, or more specifically, are pilots more likely to cheat was by far the most requested topic.
It surprised me on the one hand, and on the other, not so much.
My own theory is that the pilots profession does not make one more likely to cheat.
By far, mostly of the pilots I have talked to knew early on they wanted this career, and I don’t think they were thinking, as a young child - I wanna be a pilot so I can cheat from town to town.
Charity contacted me and wanted to share her story on the show. After we get through the specifics of what happened, it turned into a solid learning experience and my hope is that anyone who listens will take something away from it on how to best manage communication and relationships. I welcome your feedback, as always.
Wondering how to create a life that's not so turbulent; maintaining a positive self image and a great relationships?
Let's Talk!
I am a mindset and peak performance coach, helping women rediscover their own sense of identity and purpose, and create a better flight plan, avoid turbulence and put their own oxygen mask on first! Together, we work to get you out of Autopilot and create a functional checklist for life and relationship success.
As a pilot wife for over 33 years, I have navigated thousands of miles and moments of life in aviation, mommyhood, business and LIFE!

There are a lot of decisions to be made in this thing called “adulting” and pilot wife life is no different.
Today, we cover domicile and living in base vs commuting; the deviations we often make throughout the course of a career, and the details that go along with it.
Thank you to Crew Chief Mom and Proud Pilot Wife for your Rating and Review on the Podcast.
All of the things to consider about domiciles and commuting: distance, jumpseat availability, expenses such as crash pad, hotels and lodging, meals and uber, airline tickets to get home for holidays and special occasions; local family and friends, the wear and tear of commuting. There is no one size fits all, unfortunately. You must weight in on each area of your life.
The deviations of aviation: Base closings, furloughs, economic shifts, war, oil and gulf conflict, mergers, cease flyings, loss of medical through injury or illness, Equipment change and domicile changes.
Be open to weighing all options thoroughly. Have someone else help coach you through your blind spots around it, preferably someone who has been there.

Pilot and Aviation Career Advisor Jason DuVernay is back for Part 2, we go further into the “Stigmas” and how inaccurate these have been, associated with certain types of flying and airlines; how to network well and ask for help without being annoying; good communication when applying for jobs and building solid relationships vs being transactional.
I ask Jason to look in his crystal ball and tell us his predictions for the next 20-30 years. We talk about Ultra Low Cost Carriers more in depth.
How to set yourself up financially so whatever happens in the turbulent aviation and airline industry is not so devastating on the financial front.
The importance of family; his wife’s background as a pilot and aviation pro; and how much it means to have the one at home understand the stress and the reality of life as a pilot, and how it is not just layovers at exotic places. And, finally, trust - trusting the time, distance and layovers that separate spouses and partners.

We talk about the choices, the things to consider - Quality of life; amount of time home vs gone, parenting as a pilot, speed to left seat or Captain upgrade, wide body flying opportunities and more.

What is it about the public that makes so many swoon about a pilot? They ask a million questions and can’t seem to get enough? Maybe it’s just the thrill of flight itself and the thought of being in that “magical office environment” as a job, 30-40,000 feet above the ground.
Whatever the case, as the pilot wife and family, it can seem like your own identity can get lost. Welcome to show #21 of the Pilot wife podcast.
I’m a Peak Performance and mindset coach, and this is the process I mention on the show.
STEBAR
Situation, thoughts, emotion, belief, action, result
Processing your own thoughts, feelings and emotions around any situation is key.
WHO are you? Without the other labels?
WHO do you want to be?
Who are you as a partner to your pilot?
WHO are you in regards to the other hats you wear and labels “accept” for yourself?

It’s no secret pilot wife can be lonely, filled with anxiety and uncertainty; holidays, special events; lack of ability to long term plan. How do we deal with this, especially if we have no prior experience in the Aviation world?
My guest today wrote the book, literally.
Peyton Garland is a writer, wanna-be rapper, and coffee shop hopper who loves connecting people to a grace much bigger than expected. Her debut book, Not so by Myself, was promoted by Former White House Press Secretary Dana Perino and endorsed by TED Talk speaker Hannah Brencher.
We cover:
Her childhood as a Military brat, a "Pre-Med Flunkie"; News Reporter, an Enneagram 1, (her Husband is a 3 on the Enneagram).
Peyton was quickly thrust into the role of “Pilot Wife” when her husband changed careers 6 months after their marriage, leaving behind a career as a sales rep with the Atlanta Falcons.
They struggled through her taking on 3 jobs to get him through flight training and certifications; their separation when he left on his first job in Indiana; his abrupt, furloughed career during Covid, and their recent celebration of his upcoming commercial airline job. He currently trains Air Force Pilots.
She was led to write the book when she felt the tug of struggle and loneliness, wondering why she felt this way. She’s a strong woman of Christian faith, and vulnerably shares her struggles with mental health.
Aren’t we no longer supposed to be lonely when we are married? And a young marriage?
She talks about isolation and loneliness in an unhealthy church regarding women. Her tendency to perfection and her realization while sitting across from a therapist how she had struggled with this for years, shoving much under the rug.
And, she did the work to unpack herself, her thoughts, her limiting beliefs and the work she did on herself.
The “Brainspotting” technique, and how much of what she thought was an issue with her husband or outside situations were actually internal conflicts within herself.
Her drunken saga on her honeymoon flight, trying to fight a fever!
Wow - powerful stuff!

Jill See has a full colorful history in aviation. She started as a child on her father’s lap flying in a small plane, yet was not initially encouraged to become a pilot.
During college, her interest was revived. She started as a flight attendant, yet was still drawn to the flight deck!
She paid her way through flight school, became a flight instructor, regional pilot and made her way into the big leagues! She met and married a fellow pilot, became a mom, chose to stay home and is now a realtor.
She met her husband, Bob, on a flight while they were both commuting, and soon were dating, then married.
Today, they have a daughter, live in an airpark, complete with airplane and boat, and she loves her rich, full Aviation Lifestyle!
That lifestyle led her to meet and fly with Captain Sully Sullenberger, the famous "Miracle on the Hudson" landing and Al Haynes, the United Airlines Captain who crash landed in Iowa after a catastrophic engine failure.

Communication is the cornerstone of success in any relationship and the Pilot and Aviation Lifestyle probably magnifies the need for this. We cover good tips and techniques for communication in today’s show.
I was a terrible communicator in young adulthood and into midlife, honestly. I just buried stuff and ignored it.
With time, frustration and work, here are a few things I learned and share on the podcast.
Communication takes work.Starting those tough conversations takes work.
The power in “I” messages and how you feel vs YOU DID THIS
The danger in the written communication - tone, meaning and context.
Communication and good protocols in the Digital Age.
Nothing worse than a misunderstood text.
A fairly innocent text exchange between two members of the opposite sex…coworkers or good friends, can create a lot of turbulence.
Use good judgment. A passing exchange can wreak havoc for years. Trust is easier to establish in the beginning and much harder to regain. It casts doubt on everything.
Learn my STEBAR Process for managing your mind, your thoughts, feelings and beliefs.
How do you rate your ability to resolve conflict, without just ignoring it or shoving it under the rug.
If you continue in these ways, what do you think your relationship will look like in 6 months? a year? 5. 10? Will it survive?
What are your big goals for your relationship, marriage and future? This matters.

Do Pilots Cheat More Than Other Professions.- without a doubt THE most requested topic by the Pilot Wives for the podcast.

I’ve spoken with at least 10 women who have an experience to share. Some will be interviewed and others want to share their story but with anonymity.
In Part 1 - I’m going to start with my opinion and experiences about whether pilots are more likely to cheat than other profession, after over 35 years in aviation in general. This is simply my opinion and experiences and is in no way meant to undermine anything you have gone through.
I worked in aviation for 3 years before dating, and then 5 years before marrying a pilot. I've worked at small airports, meeting lots of regional airline crews; spent time as a crew scheduler; I also spent a year as a flight attendant. And, I've spent most of it as a pilot wife.

I learned to create new traditions that we have carried on for years, and that have become a bright spot and memory.
Our Christmas Eve tradition of Santa Claus pictures, hot chocolate and fun
Our Christmas Eve tradition of a family and neighborhood open house
Be willing to let go of your perfect ideal of the “Hallmark Christmas” for new possibilities and experiences.
I learned to ask myself - will it matter in 5 hours? 5 days? 5 weeks? 5 months? 5 years?
The anticipation of the emptiness is often much worse than the reality.
We must choose our emotions each day.
My kids and I (and my husband) look back now and remember only the good times. I learned to put my focus on them and making their experience the bet it could be and not focusing on what we didn’t have.
Remember to be aware of, acknowledge and accept your emotions ahead of time. Then, be prepared to make it amazing, in spite of.

I'm Jackie Ulmer, your Co-Captain, on this journey because YOU are ultimately in charge of charting your flight plan, Choosing your destination, knowing how to course correct through turbulence and keeping your passengers (that would be the rest of the family, and your pilot) as safe and as comfortable as possible and taking care of YOU, too.
As they say - please secure your own oxygen mask first, before assisting others, and that is the goal if this podcast - to be your oxygen mask.
A little about me - probably much like you, I wear a lot of different hats. Pilot wife, certainly and also mom, daughter, sister, friend and entrepreneur. Throw in Kids handler and personal uber service; head cook and bottle washer; first aid medic - you name it - we do it all, right?
I was 25 when I married my pilot, and I worked for 10 years in the airline industry, too. Not as a pilot, but I’ve done about everything except fly the airplane. So, I had a knowing already of the fate that awaited me, ha ha!
My foray into the travel world started as a travel agent. One day, the station manager for a local airline took me to lunch and offered me a job at the airline.
The pay was better, as were the hours and it sounded like an adventure, with flight benefits! So, my airline career started with me as a customer service agent in Farmington New Mexico, working for Air Midwest airlines, a small regional airline that flew 17 passenger turbo props.
My mom used to tell people I was like the girl on Wings, the 90s sitcom. And, that’s kinda how small town airports are. There were 4 airlines total and we were a family.
Listen in to hear more about how we met, married and our journey!

Hello, and Welcome to the Pilot Wife Podcast.
No matter where you are in your journey as a pilot wife, spouse, partner or family member, this community is for you!
If you are new to the aviation and pilot lifestyle, you may be wondering -
What the heck have I gotten myself into? Is this for me? Am I the only one with these questions? What’s the next 10 or 20 years going to be like? What about kids and family?
I get it, these are common questions most of us had.
I’m Jackie Ulmer, your Co-Captain and host, and as I began thinking about this podcast taking flight, I had a fun walk down memory lane with all of the stories and experiences to be shared.
Today, I am at 33 years and counting as a pilot wife, and I never really thought about all of the insight gained from over 12,000 days of this!
Marriage, kids, moving, furloughs, paycuts, upgrades, aircraft changes, training, more training, check rides, medicals, loneliness, dealing with all the real life stuff that happens while they are flying.
We have a funny joke in my house. Any time a conversation starts with “Mark was flying”, it’s going to be a train wreck. Trees falling on roofs, plumbing issues, power outages, garage door falling off the mounts -yep - “shiznit” happens.
You’ll be hearing from many other Pilot Wives in every age group, geographic area, in various companies and with LOTS of great stories, experiences and tips to share. Know this - whatever you are going through - we have someone who’s been there, too!
We know all about the erratic schedules, disrupted plans, re-assignments at the most inopportune times, frustrating communication when they are flying, or in their “man cave.” We know about domicile and airplane changes, flight medicals, uprooting and moving, just when you are making friends and settling in.
We’ve known the loneliness at times, and have found strength in our pilot wife community - a group who truly “gets” it. We understand the anxieties and worry of what they are up to in their “resort style life.”
Most of the time it’s not so “resort like!” We’ve learned to make the most of the down times, and enjoy every bit of the good times.
Add this podcast to your favorites; share it on your Pilot Facebook groups and on Instagram, and with anyone you know who might enjoy it, and find value in it.
