Having listened as the Law of the book of Moses was read and having participated in Sukkot, the people of Judah/the inhabitants of Jerusalem enter into a time of remembrance and confession. They recount the history of the relationship between Yahweh and God's chosen people, as well as the many missteps and failures of Judah to honor their covenantal responsibilities. Despite their many failures, God remains "gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in love." Today, we discuss the importance of remembering our past (good or bad), as well as the opportunity that we have to break the cycle with God's help –– embracing, leaning into, and living a new and different life as we follow Christ. Although he was born in captivity and despite having never been to Jerusalem, Nehemiah's heart breaks over the brokenness that has been reported. God stirs his heart. Nehemiah has the courage to care. He not only weeps over the situation and cries out to God, but he experiences God's leading. So he, with vulnerability, shares his concern with the king; requests safe passage and supplies; and has the courage to leave all behind to go. In today's Scripture, Nehemiah journeys to Jerusalem and, in so doing, faces opposition. Yet, he doesn't allow the opposition to get the better of him and he doesn't allow the opposition to stop him in his tracks. Today, we look at how a community, of diverse gifts and skills, joins with Nehemiah in the work of rebuilding the walls. Goldsmiths and perfume-makers; priests and homeowners and daughters –– all join in this work. When God is doing a new thing, it includes everyone! As chapter 4 begins, opposition mounts. Sanballat & Tobiah are determined to oppose the work that is taking place –– the new thing that God is doing. In the first part of chapter 5, Nehemiah addresses the "elephant in the room." In the latter half, he provides an example of an alternative way of life –– a life characterized by generosity rather than scarcity; hope rather than fear.

A request rooted, quite possibly, in their circumstances. Quite possibly, we, too, have reason to request increased faith. It could be health worries, concerns stemming from the news, economic frustrations –– whatever it is, each of us have a reason (or two or three) as to why we want and/or need our faith to increase. Yet, today, Jesus reminds us that only a small amount of faith is needed. A little bit of faith will do. This is comforting to those who are worn out. This is good news to those who are exasperated. The other man, Lazarus (a man whose name means 'God has helped') has nothing in this life. He has sores that he can't take care of. He eats scraps from the Rich Man's table. He was welcomed to that final supper, that last meal, as were the other disciples. In reality, many of them struggled with faith in the days to come. Many harbored doubts, fears, and questions.
