My name is Javier Jordan, and I have worked in safety for over sixteen years. I grew up in South Florida and have had the privilege of working or living throughout the US. I am a retired EMT/Paramedic of seventeen years. I began my career in safety in 2008 and have worked in the areas of oil and gas, refinery construction, and power generation consulting, covering projects domestically and internationally. I completed my master’s degree in occupational safety and health in 2017 at Columbia Southern University in Orange Beach, AL. My constant goal as a safety professional is to bring awareness to everyone I encounter regarding the importance of working as safely as possible so they can return home the same way they arrived at work that same day. My wife and I have been married for twenty-two years. We have two daughters and three grandchildren. My hobbies include going to the gym, movies, spending time with my family, and ministering at my local church. I am a huge football fan of the Miami Dolphins and Miami Hurricanes.

John Calvert is passionate about ensuring the safety of students and educators on a personal and professional level. His wife is an educator, and he has two children. He has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice and was a full-time Law Enforcement Officer for 12 years. During that time, he was a School Resource Officer for 6 years. John is currently the Director of School Safety for the Kansas Department of Education and a part-time Law Enforcement Officer. John is a National Speaker who focuses on empowering educators, law enforcement officers, and students to build positive relationships to keep our schools safe. He is recognized by the United States Department of Education’s Safe and Secure Schools Unit as a Subject Matter Expert in School Safety.

Jason Stoddard Bio
Jason Stoddard is the Director of School Safety and Security for the Charles County Public Schools (MD). He is responsible for sustaining a safe learning and work environment for over 27,000 students and nearly 4,000 staff members. Since coming to the public schools in April of 2018, he has created the Office of School Safety and Security, been awarded millions of dollars in grant money, implemented major evolutions such as revolving backgrounds for all employees, options-based active shooter response, the “I love u guys” Foundation Standard Response Protocols, a state of art radio communication system with public safety interoperability, first its kind intelligence unit, drone program and most recently install Gun Detect, an artificial intelligence driven solution for surveillance cameras in all the system schools. Originally from a small town in Iowa, Mr. Stoddard came to the Washington, DC area while serving as a Security Police Officer in the United States Air Force. After completing his service obligation, he embarked on a career in civilian law enforcement. He spent over 20 years with the Charles County Sheriff’s Office rising to the rank of Lieutenant. His executive command assignments include tours within the Patrol Division, Special Operations Section (overseeing the SWAT team, K-9, Marine, Traffic, and Civil Disturbance), and Homeland Security and Intelligence Sections. He has a master’s degree in organizational leadership. He is a graduate of the Northwestern University, School of Police Staff and Command, and the FBI Law Enforcement Executive Development Program. Mr. Stoddard also serves as an adjunct professor at several universities, teaches executive-level leadership for the Maryland Police Training Commission, has authored several articles for magazines on topics ranging from school safety to organizational leadership, serves as a consultant for the Department of Justice and National Institutes of Justice, sits on several advisory boards, and has often traveled the country teaching school safety, active assailant response, leadership, data/evidence-based decision making, and crisis communications, and incident management.

Robin Schawe, LPC, LAC (She/Her) is a native of Colorado Springs and has been working in the mental health field for the past 20 years. She started her career as a School Counselor where she worked within an alternative middle/high school for 14 years. She has always had a passion for working with youth and their families which drove her to make a change as she felt like she wasn’t able to make the changes necessary in mental health for those in her community. She transitioned to Aspen Pointe where she worked as a Crisis Evaluator. During this time, she traveled to all of the emergency rooms in El Paso county completing mental health evaluations for patients. She worked with the patients and their families to develop care plans for the patients. Care plans varied from patient to patient and included such treatments as hospitalizations, safety planning, outpatient therapy and rehab. Robin loved being a part of the community and felt like she had more to offer and felt right at home when she moved into her next position as the first clinician on the El Paso County BHCON unit. Robin spent three years serving her community in conjunction with an El Paso County Sheriff’s Deputy. Robin’s love of people and her passion to help others in need makes her a great fit for her current position as the Zero Suicide Coordinator for UCHealth in the Southern Region.

Erin Edwards began her journey into the risk and safety world when she became a firefighter 21 years ago. Erin has worked extensively in the structural, wildland, technical rescue, air crash rescue, hazmat, and medical realms of the fire service. She currently holds the rank of platoon captain in her fire department where she leads a platoon of amazing firefighters. She has worked as both a paid and volunteer firefighter throughout her tenure. 2 of her years in the fire service were spent in Iraq as a contract firefighter with a military contractor providing fire and emergency services to our deployed military service members.
Erin also holds her Certified Risk Managers designation and has worked in the government sector of risk management for 6 years as an analyst and then risk manager. Her education includes a bachelor's degree in criminal justice with an undergraduate certificate in counterintelligence as well as a master's certificate in intelligence studies. In her spare time Erin wrote and self-published a book called "This Is Not A Sports Book" as a no holds barred, tongue in cheek, short, coffee table read born from the many questions she received over the years from her guy friends and fellow firefighters regarding the nuances of women. Erin believes in always learning something new as well as finding places and things in the world to experience and enjoy.

Amy Barnes is a Safety and Training Specialist in North Carolina with eight years of experience working in the EHS Field. She graduated from UNC-Pembroke in 2015 with a bachelor’s degree in biology and a concentration in Microbiology. After graduating she was offered a Safety Coordinator position and has been in a safety role since.
In her spare time, Amy enjoys spending time at the beach with her two daughters, Hannah (18) and Emmy (4).

Kyle Black started at Sabre Industries in June 2015 as an EHS Specialist and is currently the EHS Manager of the Sioux Campus. Sabre Industries specializes in manufacturing tubular utility and telecom structures as well as other telecom structures, such as concealed and angle iron structures. Sabre Industries also provides coating and galvanizing services.
Kyle has 4 children 3 boys: Jaiden, Isaiah, and Vincent, and a girl, Liliana, a wife Brenda and a cat Baue Jangles.
Kyle went to school for EMT/Fire Science at Kirkwood and studied Public Administration with a specialty in Emergency Management at Upper Iowa University.
Kyle has 5 years of ER Technician experience. 3 years of Field EMS and 8 years of industrial response. 4 years of security between Kirkwood apartments and St. Luke’s Hospital. 3 years as a Fire Fighter 1/Hazmat Specialist. 8 years as a Horizontal Engineer specializing in Crane Operations in the US Army Reserve.

Joseph brings 40 years of knowledge and experience in the regulatory arena with both the United States Coast Guard and the State of Texas. In his 22 years of experience in the US Coast Guard, Joseph was a Maritime Vessel Inspector, Federal On-Scene Coordinator’s Representative, Spill Response Officer, Facility Compliance Officer, and a Training Instructor. In his 18 years as a Senior Response Officer with the Texas General Land Office (TGLO) Oil Spill Division, he was designated as a lead senior trainer and instructor for spill response, equipment deployments, vessel and facility compliance, and State On-Scene Coordinator’s Representative. Currently, for the past 8 years employed with an consultant firm based out of Houston, Texas conducting wide-range of training and exercises worldwide.
During this time, he was also a planner, designer, State On-Scene Coordinator and instructor for regional and international training and exercise, including being part of the design team for Mexico and United States (MEXUS) since the first exercise in 2002. Over the past 20 years Joseph has been an authorized Train-the-Trainer under the Hazardous Material Research Institute (HMTRI) and National Institute for Environmental Health Science (NIEHS). He has also been an Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) authorized trainer for General Industry, Construction, Ship-breaking, Ag Terrorism, and Maritime. He has been a detailed plan writer for maritime and petrochemical facilities, including international airports. Lastly, he has been a Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) authorized Train-the-Trainer for deliverables of the incident command system (ICS) and section specific training.
His response background with the State of Texas and the US Coast Guard provides extensive knowledge in all levels of industry and maritime vessels and understanding the regulatory requirements. Since the pandemic, he has accomplished delivery for both training and exercises in a virtual format utilizing MS Teams, Zoom, and other virtual platforms. Paula Deck is the Strategic Account Executive for Red Cross Training Services in Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Northwest and Southwest Iowa since 2018. She is responsible for promoting, consulting, and selling American Red Cross training solutions, AEDs, AED management programs, and training and preparedness supplies to companies, organizations, healthcare systems, colleges and universities, and schools to help them build and maintain a world class safety and emergency response program that prepares people to respond to emergencies and save lives with confidence and skill based on the latest and best emergency science.

Paula is a certified Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor, and she enjoys reading, writing, and camping with family and friends.
Tammy Lee is the Executive Director for the Northwest Iowa and Northeast Nebraska Chapter of the American Red Cross. Her primary area of responsibility is to work with leadership volunteers and community partners across 33 counties in northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska to ensure support for and delivery of the Red Cross mission.
Tammy’s service with the American Red Cross began in 1991 while a college student, volunteering as a CPR and First Aid instructor in Waterloo, Iowa. She completed her BA in Leisure Services and MA in Non-Profit Administration at the University of Northern Iowa and joined the Red Cross full-time in 1995 as manager of the Health and Safety department in Mason City, Iowa. Tammy became a member of the Siouxland Area Chapter (Sioux City, IA) staff in 1999 first to manage health and safety program, then as the Assistant Executive Director. Tammy took on the role of Executive Director in 2007.

Cris Burgin has a Master of Science degree in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management with a concentration in Occupational Safety and a Bachelor of Science degree in Aerospace Management with a minor in Business Management, both from Eastern Kentucky University. He holds Graduate Safety Practitioner (GSP) and Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) certifications through the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP).
He works in the construction industry as a Safety Manager for Helix Electric in Washington DC, Virginia, and Maryland. He is in the process of a promotion to Regional Safety Manager for Helix Electric’s Sothern California Region. He is also a facilitator for Eastern Kentucky University’s online undergraduate and graduate programs. He was previously employed as a Safety Coordinator for the Denham-Blythe Company located in Lexington, Kentucky.
He has been relied upon to perform lead site safety supervision on projects which consist of data centers, high rises, a hospital, processing plants, and manufacturing plants. He has been involved in new construction, as well as demo rebuild construction projects while employed at Helix Electric and Denham Blythe. He has taken on numerous highly hazardous operations which dealt with energizations, cranes, confined space entries, excavations, and scaffolding just to name a few.

Rocky DeWitt is a Supervisor at District 5 Woodbury County. He has 22.5 years with MidAmerican Energy (fka IPS) where he worked as the coal-fired power plant operations dept., Instrument and Electrical Tech department. He is accustomed to OSHA trainings in rigging, scaffolding, first-aid/CPR etc. He has 3 years with FedEx Express, 7 years with Wells' Inc, as a Refrigeration Tech, and 2.5 years as Sales Associate at Rooster's H-D.
He is currently an USCCA Concealed Carry Instructor for IA and NE, he also works for Woodbury County Sheriff's Office as Court Security Deputy, and is running for Iowa State Senate. He is a life-long Woodbury County resident, living in Lawton, IA.

Diana Martinez is the Environmental Health and Safety Manager at a cabinet manufacturing company located in Hamlet, NC. As the Environmental Health and Safety Manager, she oversees various assignments from accident investigation and powered industrial equipment to storm water pollution prevention plans. She has successfully completed OSHA #511 Standards for General Industry, OSHA #501 Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for General Industry, and OSHA #2255 Principles of Ergonomics.
Her previous employment included Operations Area Management for sanitization crews across the South Eastern United States. In this role, she managed Sanitation crews for meat and food processing plants. This profession requires extensive knowledge of Lock Out Tag Out procedures and protocols. At the young age of 24, she is dedicated to self-improvement and improving the processes that she manages daily.

Daniel Blount is 37 years old and has been married for 12 years to his wife Meghan. They have 2 kids, a 2 year old daughter (Birdee), and a 2 ½ month old son (Maddux). He's been in general industry safety for 7 years now specializing in heavy equipment, warehousing, truck and bus mechanics, and industrial generators. He has in-depth knowledge of OSHA, MSHA, DOT, EPA, NFPA, ANSI, and EPD regulations. He earned his B.S. in Occupational Safety from Eastern Kentucky University, and is currently pursuing M.S. in Safety, Security, and Emergency Management.

Darlena Kelly doesn’t hail from Austin, Silicon Valley or New York but her dotcom start-up is making big waves in the gamification of education. Kelly, a Birmingham native, is an innovative engineer and creator of SimiDigi, a simulated interactive digital learning platform launched in Dallas, Texas. Kelly is blazing new trails in the field of computer animation and visualization while helping more industrial corporations improve safety, enhance workforce skills and reduce costs.
SimiDigi is using 3D and Virtual Reality technology to improve the way industrial and other companies, with complex operations, communicate and train their employees digitally. Darlena has helped companies improve productivity, solve communication challenges, increase sales and minimize the risk of safety violations and possible litigation as a result of employee negligence through her special workforce training products and services.
She has won numerous awards and accolades for her pioneering work, from Top 25 Women in Technology by the Dallas Business Journal, 2017 Supplier of the Year, Entrepreneurial Spotlight Award, Minority-Owned Business of the Year finalist and Emerging Business of the Year.

Kevin Morris started out in the mechanical industry while going to school for Design Drafting. Became a volunteer Fireman and EMT in 1992. Got on the job training with industry safety. Changed focus to a career Firefighter in 2000. Progressed to the rescue side and eventually became a Paramedic in 2008. He retired in 2021 as a Supervisor / Paramedic. Throughout his career, he enjoyed teaching and mentoring new people entering into this career field. Occasionally teaching seasoned veterans a new approach.

(Lightguards and Safety engineer) for 4 years, MTE (head of safety products division with emphasis on electronic safety products) for 4 years, in 1999 he's the founding member of Safetytec in UK, in 2007 he opened Safetytec division in Michigan, and in 2015 he opened a Safetytec division in Texas.

Gregory M. Vecchi, Ph.D. has over 30 years of law enforcement experience. He was the former supervisory Special Agent and Chief of the FBI Behavioral Science Unit and career FBI negotiator. In these positions, he gained extensive experience assessing and interacting with violent offenders, as well as researching and conducting hundreds of training sessions in threat assessment, crisis intervention, behavioral analysis, hostage negotiation, and interview and interrogation. Dr. Vecchi teaches armed and unarmed combatives, defensive tactics, firearms, and other use-of-force skills to law enforcement officers and selected civilians. Dr. Vecchi is an expert witness and consults on a variety of topics.
Dr. Vecchi earned a B.S. in Management/Human Resources from Park University, a M.S. in Criminal Justice from the University of Alabama, and a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution from Nova Southeastern University. Dr. Vecchi currently serves as a Professor of Criminal Justice and Homeland Security at Keiser University. During his career, Dr. Vecchi investigated Russian organized crime, international drug trafficking, international and domestic terrorism, and violent crime.

He has been in the fire service since 2004. He was a fire explorer for Moreno Valley, CA, a volunteer firefighter for Riverside County Fire Dept, EMT with a Lynch ambulance, and a paramedic since 2009.
Eric is currently a volunteer Firefighter / Paramedic for South Sioux City Fire department. He has his A.S in Fire Science, A.S in Paramedicine, and 4 Classes away from his B.S in Emergency Management / Public Safety. He's also a CA certified firefighter academy / FFI.

Dr. I. David Daniels is an occupational health and safety professional, thought leader, former public safety executive, and President/CEO of ID2 Solutions, LLC. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Services Administration, a master’s degree in human resources management, and a Ph.D. in Occupational Health and Safety. He is certified as a Safety Director, Violence Prevention Specialist, Emergency Management Specialist, Safety and Health Specialist, and certified in Mental Health First Aid.
Dr. Daniels serves as a member of the National Safety Council (NSC) Board of Directors, was the founding chair of the NSC’s Government and Public-Sector Division, and was a recipient of NSC’s highest, the Distinguished Service to Safety Award. He is also chair of the National Association of Black Compliance and Risk Management Professionals Safety and Security Workgroup.
Dr. Daniels is a life member of the International Association of Fire Chiefs and served over 30 years in fire/rescue, emergency medical, and emergency management organizations in three states. His career focus on safety was a primary reason he was inducted into the National Fire Heritage Center’s Hall of Legacies, Legends, and Leaders Class of 2021. He was the first living African American to have received this honor.

Mark Oliva is the Managing Director for Public Affairs at the National Shooting Sports Foundation, Inc. (NSSF), the firearm industry’s trade association. He is responsible for NSSF’s communications on policy, government relations and legislative issues.
Prior to joining NSSF, Mark served 25 years in the Marine Corps, joining in 1991 and retiring in 2017 at rank of Master Gunnery Sergeant. Mark served in Public Affairs in the Marine Corps including a tour as a staff writer for Stars and Stripes newspaper on Okinawa, Japan. Mark’s military career included deployments to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Haiti, the Mediterranean Sea, and he participated in combat operations in multiple tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Mark also saw service as a Defense Legislative Fellow to a Virginia Congressman and was an Advisor to the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for Wounded Warriors in both the Navy and the Marine Corps before he retired and started his career with NSSF.

Libby was born in Lafayette, Louisiana, raised in South America and received her bachelor's degree in geology from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana. For about twenty years, she was an environmental consultant in Louisiana, the Pacific Northwest, Central America and the Caribbean. She served as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Bolivia and for the last seven years, has served as an instructor, program manager and grant writer (and anything else that was needed!) for Limitless Vistas, Inc. She is a Louisiana Master Naturalist, an avid recycler and gardener.
She started her own 501(c)3 non-profit, Honeybee Strategies, that has won it’s first grant. The grant is an OSHA, Susan Harwood Capacity Building Pilot grant that allows Honeybee Strategies to develop and provide hazard recognition training to New Orleans area small boutique hotel’s housekeeping staff.

Steve Tarani is a former fulltime CIA protective programs employee and defensive tactics (DT) subject matter expert (SME) who served on the POTUS 45 pre-election executive protection detail. A Rangemaster on staff at Gunsite Academy (AZ) for over 20 years, Tarani is a US DoD and FLETC-certified federal firearms instructor who also provides services for the US Naval Special Operations Command, National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO), and others. Steve is a professional knife designer (Strider, Buck Knives, Benchmade, 5.11, BladeTech, et al), and architect of the International Chiefs of Police (IACP) Model Policy on the carry, deployment and usage of knives by federal, state and municipal police officers. Tarani is an active protective agent, published author of nine books to date, writer for multiple industry publications and remains an advisor to the US Department of Justice (DOJ), US Department of Defense and other government agencies.

Thirty years ago, he visited Iowa for the first time. The plain-spoken sincerity, faith, and strength of families spoke to him. He thought that this could be a great place to build a life and family. It turns out he was right. He met and married his wife, Donna, four years later. That was 25 years ago. Together they raised three children and now enjoy three beautiful grandchildren. His move to Iowa was one of the best decisions he has ever made.
He set up a solo law practice in Sioux City in 1992. At the outset, he did just about everything an attorney could do. From litigating divorces to doing some criminal work and representing people who had been injured through no fault of their own, he got to know people very closely in their struggles. They have been the people he's identified with over the last 28 years.
His faith led him to visit nursing homes for 18 years, to start a nonprofit corporation with friends for Kenyan orphans and start a book club at the Fort Dodge prison.
He has run for and been elected to the Iowa House of Representatives and the State Senate, where he's served since 2017. The legislation that he has focused on has helped keep children safe, protect second amendment rights, give parents a choice in where their children are educated, protect the economic interests of seniors, better care for our Veterans, and protect the unborn. Representing the interests of working-class people and fighting for those left behind has been the greatest honor of his life.

Dustin Koppel Is the Head Krav Maga Instructor for the Global Martial Arts University.
He has been involved in martial arts for 14 years now and teaching martial arts and self-defense for 12 years. He began with Krav Maga and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Two years later he got involved with Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and hasn't stopped training since. As a competitor, he has won kickboxing championships in the light and super heavyweight categories. He enjoys competing, but his true passion is teaching and watching people grow into leaders. He has always been active in helping his community and wanted to share those values with his students, as they become leaders in their community.

Stacey was born in Sioux City but raised in southern Iowa from 3rd grade until she graduated from Van Meter High School in 1989. She attended the University of Wyoming in Laramie, Wyoming and graduated with a degree in Wildlife Fisheries Biology & Management in 1993. During the last three summers of college, she came back to Iowa and worked part time for the Department of Natural Resources Law Enforcement Bureau as a Water Patrol Officer at Saylorville and Red Rock Reservoirs. She was hired full time as a State Conservation Officer for the DNR in September of 1994 and was assigned to Warren County. She then transferred to Marion County in 1997 and then currently in Woodbury County since 1999 until the present. State Conservation Officers are state certified officers and can help any law enforcement departments statewide but are assigned a “territory”, which usually consists of a county or two, to concentrate their efforts and so citizens have a local contact for questions or concerns.

We are joined today with Johnny Tureaud to discuss Judo for Law Enforcement. He began training in Judo in 1990 at the Dearborn Judo Club under Fred Farley Sensei where he earned his Shodan. Upon moving to Sioux City he continued his study of Judo at the American Judo Club under Frankie Williams Sensei. After Williams Sensei's untimely passing, Johnny continued to teach Judo at American Judo & Jujitsu in both Sioux City and North Sioux City. He is a former Iowa, Michigan and Nebraska State and State Games champion as well as a State Kata champion and has competed in both the United States and Canada. He has instructed many local, state and national champions (both junior and senior) at IJI, MJI, NJI, AAU, USJA and USA Judo sponsored competitions.
In addition to Judo, Johnny has intensely studied several additional martial arts. He is Shodan in Jujitsu and a Certified Jujitsu Coach – Level D through the USJA Jujitsu Program. Johnny holds a Menkyo (license to teach) at the Shoden level in Kenjutsu under George Alexander Hanshi and holds the rank of Yonkyu in Shotokan Karate through both the Shotokan Federation of Michigan and Global Martial Arts Association.

Tyson Kilbey has more than 25 years of experience in law enforcement, consisting of three years as a hotel security supervisor and 22 years as a deputy sheriff for the Johnson County Kansas Sheriff’s Office. He has worked in the detention, patrol and training divisions, SWAT and accident investigation units. He is currently a lieutenant for the Sheriff’s Office.
Kilbey owns Top Firearms Instruction, LLC, and recently authored “Personal Defense Mastery,” a follow-up to his first book “Fundamental Handgun Mastery.” He is a certified instructor for the Gracie University in Torrance, California, and a Master Instructor for the Carotid Restraint Training Institute. He has multiple defensive tactics and firearms certifications and has completed the Force Science Analyst Course. He is also the Match Director for the Brandon Collins Memorial Shootout, which is a shooting competition named in honor of a deputy who died in the line of duty. Proceeds from the match go to charitable causes.

He was the Field Safety Manager for the general contractor, Performance Contractors, and was on the site for 3 years. He also has 15 years experience in Safety for the trucking industry, 12 years in Safety for the construction industry with majority on large sites (over $1.5 billion), 3 years in Loss Control Consultant in the Insurance industry, and also has his CHST certification. He is now the Safety and Risk Manager at Thompson Electric and has been with this company since 2019.

Steve Iacino is the Assistant Chief of Planning for the Frederick Firestone Fire Protection District in northern Colorado. Chief Iacino has 32 years in the fire service starting as a Volunteer Firefighter and moving through the ranks from Career Firefighter, Paramedic, Engineer, Captain, Battalion Chief and Assistant Chief. As the Assistant Chief of Planning, Chief Iacino serves as the Fire Marshal for the Towns of Frederick and Firestone. Today we are joined with Frass Azab. He's the owner of Warriors Academy KC and Chief Instructor of the Krav Maga program. He is a graduate of Park University’s Criminology/Criminal Justice program, worked in Forensics, and as a member of teams dedicated to caring for violent patients in psychiatric wards. He has been a bodyguard for celebrities, and worked as a security supervisor for nightclubs in Miami and Kansas City. These professions have provided Frass real world experience utilizing his knowledge and physical skills developed in his martial arts training, giving him an array of principles and life experiences that make his lessons unique and applicable.
He is a certified Warriors Krav Maga instructor under Nicholas Hughes, a CSW instructor under Eric Paulson, a Kembative’s Brand Instructor under Kelly McCann, and an instructor under Hock Hochheim’s Force Necessary Stick and Knife Hand to Hand Combat. Today we are joined with Tim Higgins. Tim currently serves as a Technical Expert for Utilities. He was employed by the City of Sioux City for over twenty-five years, he worked twelve years as the Utilities Superintendent and was responsible for 360+ miles of storm sewer, 360+ miles of sanitary sewer, and 475 miles of water main. Also during his time as the Utilities Superintendent from 2013 to 2016 he filled the role as the Public Works Safety Manager for the City of Sioux City. Served 2.5 years (1987-1990) on Active Duty in the Airforce as an Aircraft Mechanic on the B-1B aircraft and 19 years (1990-2009) in the 185th ANG as an Electrician. During his time in the 185th he served as the Safety NCO for the Electrical Shop and as the Shop Supervisor.
As a Technical Expert at McClure Engineering, Tim is responsible for providing technical guidance and directing staff in the planning, design, and construction review of utility projects. Tim has a wide variety of experience in the infrastructure construction field, ranging from paving work, sanitary and storm sewer construction and repair, and water main construction and repair. Tim is certified in Drinking Water Distribution Grade 4, Drinking Water Treatment Grade 2, Wastewater Treatment Grade 2, and Collection Systems Grade 4. He also provides Confined Space Safety training for the field staff and serves on the McClure Safety Committee where he has written/updated several company safety policies.

We are joined today with Pete Peterson to go over airsoft training. He began his Martial Arts and Combatives journey while serving in the United States Marine Corps (USMC) in 1986. He owns Roundkick Gyms in Central Iowa that focus on Muay Thai Kickboxing. He founded Centerline Self Defense Systems, focusing on Combatives and multiple Self Defense programs. He then created the patent pending, Pocket P.D.T. (Personal Defense Tool) that utilizes direct tactics to produce highly effective results.
Pete is a Senior Muay Thai Instructor, a 6th Degree Black Belt in Bando-Ryu Karate, 4th Degree Black Belt in Progressive Kenpo-Jitsu, an apprentice instructor, a certified knife fighting instructor, and a certified R.A.T. system instructor.

We are joined today with Greg Dziewonski. He first started training in Karate and Judo at age 13. He's from Poland but moved to the United States when he was 23. In 2012 Greg receives his Black Belt in Krav Maga from Master Alain Cohen and becomes a National Director of Krav Maga Federation of America.
In 2017 Greg travels to Israel to train at the Wingate Institute – Israel’s National Training Center for Athlete and Coaches and receives Krav Maga Expert Certification.
Greg continues to study Krav Maga under the guidance of Master Alain Cohen. He teaches at Performance Krav Maga’s locations in New Jersey and conducts seminars, courses, and certifications throughout the United States and abroad.

Today Conan Schafer joins us as we discuss BJJ for law enforcement. Conan Schafer is native of Lincoln, NE. He is a 23 year veteran of the Lincoln Police Department, retiring in 2020. Among his many duties and assignments, Conan was a defensive tactics instructor during most of his career.
He has over 30 years of martial arts training. He has trained in Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Goju Ryu Karate, and Daito Ryu Aikijujutsu. He earned a 2nd degree black belt in JiuJitsu under Sensei John Roseberry, and was the head JiuJitsu instructor at Roseberry's Martial Arts. He earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in 2021. Conan is a co-owner of Lincoln Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Center in Lincoln, NE.

We discuss personal safety with both Ryan and Lisa Bertrand on this episode. Ryan and Lisa Bertrand co-facilitate self-defense classes, and feature a class focused on the empowerment of women. This class arose out of Lisa’s personal experiences and those of her female friends and colleagues. The Bertrand's teach a wide scope of self-defense tactic classes, including courses for women. Bertrand Tactical strives to help others feel more confident and safe in their environment, as well as everyday life.
Lisa works as in-house counsel with a Fortune 500 company. A graduate of Drake University Law School, she has been practicing law in Iowa and South Dakota since moving back to Sioux City in 2004. Ryan Bertrand has been with the Sioux City, IA Police Department for almost two decades, currently serving as a Lieutenant in the Uniformed Patrol Division as the Shift Commander for the Third Watch. Over the course of his career, he has served a total of ten years in the Crimes Against Persons Department as a detective, and for the last five of those years, as a Sergeant. He is the SWAT Team Commander and is the department’s Head Defensive Tactics and Use of Force Instructor.
Lisa is very active in the instruction of the classes. She not only demonstrates the principles in action, but she also teaches from a perspective and background distinctly different than Ryan’s. In the Women’s Defense class, they bring together their unique experiences to offer a fun, practical, and rewarding experience. Participants leave with practical skills and proven strategies to recognize dangers, mitigate risks and to move with confidence.

A static stretch is when your muscles are extended and held for a certain amount of time. A dynamic stretch is when you are moving your muscles in an active matter. A static stretch is not ideal before workouts due to elongating those muscles. When force is later applied you're not able to withstand as much force.

Experience Modifier Rate is a number that is assigned to your business. 1.0 is the baseline and if you have a 1.0 you are standard or average. It can go up and down based on a 3 year rolling rate. A calculation that depends on the lose history and your payroll for the prior 3 years. As payroll goes up and the lose history stays low than the EMR goes below 1. On the other hand, if payroll stays the same and lose history goes up than the EMR goes up. Lose history is based on just work comp and payroll is based on just the hours worked.
Each .1 increase is 1% more on your premium. If you go the other direction, you get a credit and save money.
The overall goal is to get your EMR as low as possible.

Mr. Ron Snyder, MEd., CSP, CET, CIT, serves as the Director for Environmental Health and Safety Training for the National Partnership for Environmental Technology Education (PETE). Recognized as an expert in emergency response and environmental health and safety, Mr. Snyder designs, coordinates and delivers programs across the nation to state and local governments, military Civil Support Teams, as well as to public and industrial sector first responders. He has developed national training programs for the Department of Homeland Security that focus on response to foreign animal disease outbreaks through either natural events or terrorist events, Disaster Response, and Mass Fatalities and Mass Casualties for Rural Communities.
Ron played a significant role in the development of the OSHA Disaster Site Worker program modeled after his curriculum designed for response to CBRNE (chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, energetic/explosives) terrorist events.
Ron has a master’s degree in adult education, is a Certified Safety Professional, Certified Environmental Trainer, an authorized instructor for all OSHA and MSHA training programs, an authorized instructor in FEMA Incident Command/NIMS and an authorized instructor for the Department of Justice Weapons of Mass Destruction program.

Some airborne contaminants are lead, epistasis, silica, hex crome, chemical vapors, etc. OSHA has access to multi employee citations. This means if you are on the job site and it wasn't you who created the contaminate, but you were on the jobsite you can still get cited for the hazard.

Putting together a safety orientation is a critical part of the onboarding program. A simple checklist would be all of the safety policies you have in place currently. If necessary, most of this can be completed online.

We cover both construction and general industry fire prevention rules. You need to inspect your fire prevention safety methods every month, especially the fire extinguisher. When inspecting the fire extinguisher first check the pin and the gauge, then make sure the handle is in tack and the hose is in proper condition, and finally make sure there are no dents or white powder around the extinguisher.
The annual inspection is done by a professional and goes into depth.

If it's recordable, it's reportable.
You should be able to pull all the required documents and reports if needed. When filling out the report make sure you do it in detail and in full. Record everything that is legitimate: all the hours of everyone involved and all of your employees total. Make sure a higher executive signs the 300A with the correct date. The 300A has to be posted between February 1st and April 30th .

An aerial lift is any vehicle-mounted device used to elevate personnel. Aerial lifts have replaced ladders and scaffolding on many job sites due to their mobility and flexibility. They can be made of metal, fiberglass-reinforced plastic, or other materials. They can also be powered or manually operated.
Many workers are killed or injured on aerial lifts every year. Learn about the hazards to be aware of, the necessary training needed, and how to be safe before and while operating the aerial lift.
Lockout tagout is used to prevent the release of hazardous energy during maintenance, repair, start up, etc. A machine specific lockout tagout procedure is mandatory for each hardwire machine. It needs to be in writing and near the machine.
OSHA regulations say the locks needs to be sturdy, standardized, and you can only have one key per lock.

Blood borne pathogens are a real issue for every single industry and trade. It's for first aid on an employee or when there's an injury. You are more likely to be exposed than you realize.
