In this enlightening episode of "The Art of Aging Mindfully," I delve into the concept of Ishta Devata, or personal divinity, and explore the profound impact of personalizing a devotional spiritual practice. I share my thoughts on how having a personal deity can foster a deeper spiritual connection and provide guidance in our busy and psychologically challenging world.

I begin by explaining what Ishta Devata means in Hindu spirituality and why it is significant. Understanding the role of a personal deity is essential for those seeking a more intimate and meaningful spiritual practice. I discuss how choosing an Ishta Devata that resonates with your spiritual and emotional needs can benefit your overall well-being.

Personalizing your devotional practice is not just about choosing a deity; it's about building a relationship that brings psychological and emotional benefits. I highlight how devotion to an Ishta Devata can offer stability and comfort, especially during stressful times. By sharing my journey with Shiva as my Ishta Devata, I illustrate how this connection has become a powerful anchor in my life.

Shiva, with his symbolism and attributes, provides guidance and solace for me. I share practical ways to incorporate devotion to Shiva into daily routines, making spirituality an integral part of everyday life. This personalized approach to spirituality helps manage stress and fosters a sense of peace and resilience.

Maintaining a devotional practice amidst a busy schedule can be challenging, but I offer strategies and techniques to integrate spirituality seamlessly into daily life. By using my connection to Shiva, I navigate psychological challenges and find strength in my devotion.

For those interested in exploring these concepts further, I mention recommended readings on Ishta Devata and Hindu spirituality, as well as meditation and devotional practices centered around Shiva. These resources can help deepen your understanding and enhance your spiritual journey.

Join me in this episode as I explore the transformative power of embracing your Ishta Devata. Discover how personalizing your spiritual practice can bring profound peace and resilience to your life.

Episode 71 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast, dials in a brilliant, classical teaching on Non-Attachment.

The koan "When you meet the Buddha on the road, kill him" is attributed to the 9th-century Chinese Zen master Linji.

Linji was a prominent figure in the Zen tradition, known for his unconventional and direct teaching methods. This particular koan exemplifies his approach, which aimed to jolt students out of their habitual patterns of thought and push them toward direct realization. By presenting paradoxical and provocative statements, Linji sought to help his students transcend intellectual understanding and experience deeper spiritual insight.

The significance of this koan lies in its emphasis on severing attachments to spiritual teachers and external representations of enlightenment. It urges practitioners to recognize that true spiritual awakening cannot be found through clinging to teachers, doctrines, or any fixed concepts. Instead, it highlights the importance of self-reliance and personal experience on the spiritual path. By metaphorically "killing" the Buddha, practitioners are encouraged to let go of external dependencies and cultivate an independent, direct experience of enlightenment. This process is essential for achieving true spiritual independence and realizing the ultimate nature of reality.

On Episode 70 of TAAM I speak with the brilliant yoga educator, Leslie Kaminoff.

Leslie is steeped in a tremendous amount of practice ( he started yoga at age 20, in 1978) and professional teaching experience. He was there before the first YTT's formed and has stayed the course to watch the West make it's own yoga, as we eclipse the role of Guru Devotion on the path to personal insight.

We had a fluid, rolling conversation that touched upon some of Leslie's personal chronology, how to practice bandah, the role of hands on assists, as well as "what is the point of all this physical stuff we are doing with our bodies?"

Leslie encourages the modern yogi to use their practice to "move into good space" (joy) while trying to avoid bad space (suffering.)

This conversation will intrigue yoga teachers as well as those who are new to practice because of it's depth, and raw honesty, and Leslie's vast experience.

Thank You Leslie Kaminoff for your generosity in sharing good cheer with The Art of Aging Mindfully Community!

With our cultural focus on constant self improvement and limitless growth, it can be difficult to accept "where we are today." This opposite side of the coin can cause inner conflict and lead to self sabotage.

On Episode 69 of TAAM podcast I discuss a model of the chakras, which represent a Hierarchy of associated psychologies which are linked to ever deepening levels of self acceptance.

I then give three practical tips for cultivating more self acceptance, which temper and balance our desires for self improvement.

Welcome to the Pod everyone!

On Episode 66 I talk about being a good man and take a shot at defining a solid man. The key to mature masculinity is to come into balance, instead of extreme expression of the masculine virtues of: strength, honor, courage, mastery and positive aggression. This episode is 16 minutes long, and gives a concise update to an evolving masculinity that fits the times.

All men in the NYC area are invited to join The Walk for Men's Health, which I'm doing in collaboration with Mount Sinai Hospital. The walk is 1.58 miles long. We will meet at 5th Ave and 100th St, in Manhattan at 4:45pm for a 5pm start time. After the walk, Mount Sinai Hospital will be offering PSA screening to raise awareness of prostate health.

Please show up, and spread the word to raise awareness of Men's Health! It's a beautiful thing to see Men supporting one another.

After the walk, I'll be leading a mindfulness practice and a share lead a wonderfully accessible series of stretches to limber up, post exercise!

All are welcome.

On Episode 64 of The Art of Aging Mindfully, I share a valuable lesson I learned in my late 20's from the legendary acting teacher Thurman E. Scott.

Thurman taught me that it was natural, when integrating new knowledge into our daily lives, to make two steps forward (progress, deeper awareness) but to be aware that one step backwards (regression) can be a normal part of the personal growth experience.

In this light, progress is slow, steady, and incremental. We must embrace ourselves lovingly when we fall down, get back up, and get right back into the saddle.

This is the main reason master Patanjali, emphasizes the notion of continuous, uninterrupted practice.

On episode 62 of the podcast I share the mechanics of my seasonal mind-body cleanse, which I do four times per year, at the turn of each season.

Feeling the Spring Vibes of March, (I wore a t-shirt yesterday while hiking in the forest), I decided to clean house . I rode the wave of the season turning and purged my body and mind with psychedelics and a three-day fast

Listeners can peer into my personal process and then decide to try their own unique structured experiments that can support their own personal development.

Psychedelics and Fasting are not appropriate for everyone, and can lead to negative outcomes for some of us. Thorough medical screening and clearance are suggested before engaging in both practices. One must also have a strong mindset, and a safe physical setting for engaging in these practices.

Enjoy my personal share on episode 62 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast.

Welcome to the Podcast Everyone!

On episode 59 I share one of my favorite verses from all of the ancient wisdom texts.

The Tao Te Ching is loaded with great thoughts to ponder. The ideas and concepts of the Tao Te Ching can easily be correlated back to the yogic tradition, and mirror key concepts like "non - attachment." It's always brilliant to look for universalities in spirituality, across different cultural traditions.

This show is all about experiencing the wisdom of the first verse and first part out of 81, from The Tao Te Ching. I share my reverence for this brilliant work, and attempt to interpret the teachings of Lao Tzu, hoping to inspire an opening in your imagination, and perhaps further study on your part.

In episode 58 of "The Art of Aging Mindfully," we dive deep into the ancient wisdom of Yoga Sutra 1.12, exploring the dual means of attaining yoga through practice (abhyasa) and non-attachment (vairagya). This episode unpacks the essence of these powerful concepts and how they can illuminate the path toward a more centered and mindful aging process.

Non-attachment, in particular, is a practice that challenges many of us deeply. It compels us to examine our relationships with the material world, our desires, and even our perceptions of identity and success. I share my personal journey of decoding non-attachment and how this confrontational practice has transformed my approach to life, aging, and spirituality. The insights gained from this exploration can offer profound shifts in how we navigate the inevitable changes that come with aging.

Furthermore, we discuss practical ways to integrate the principles of abhyasa and vairagya into our daily lives, making the ancient teachings of Patanjali relevant and accessible for our modern journey toward mindful aging. Whether you're a seasoned yogi or new to the concept of mindful aging, this episode offers valuable perspectives on cultivating a life of balance, peace, and fulfillment at any age.

Join us as we delve into these timeless teachings, offering reflections, anecdotes, and tips for embracing the art of aging with grace and intention. Episode 58 is not just about understanding the philosophy of yoga; it's about living it in the context of our daily lives and finding the beauty in letting go.

Thank you for tuning in to "The Art of Aging Mindfully." Let's embark on this journey together, embracing the wisdom of yoga to age with mindfulness and joy.

Welcome to the Pod Folks!

This week I spoke with long time yoga teacher Michael Stein.

It's a beautiful conversation between two yoga dudes that love and respect the practice of yoga. Michael shares his valuable experience with adapting the yoga and conditioning practices to fit life's second half. At 55, Michael still maintains a rigorous and beautiful practice, while training differently than he did at age 25.

Listeners will gain valuable insights on how to train and feel inspired to do their own "structured experiments," which help us to find our own unique path and way.

I was delighted to find many parallels between our work, as Michael and I spoke. We both teach yoga, both lift, both enjoy cardio, are both massage therapists, both love the Upper West Side of Manhattan, both live in the Hudson Valley of New York, and we focus on teaching older folks.

Michael is on IG at yoga_flashcards
You can reach out to him about his upcoming Senior Yoga Teacher Training Program (which can be done in person or digitally) scheduled for 2.24.24

Thanks Michael for your generosity!!!

Episode 55 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast is all about moving beyond dogmatic approaches to health.

On This show I share my personal evolution in my approach to yoga practice and nutrition.

I was challenged and inspired by Master Iyengar who said “5 breaths is not enough for me to explore the asana and learn about it’s full expression.”

"Dogma" refers to a set of principles or beliefs that are accepted without question, often as part of a particular ideology, religion, or system of thought. In a broader sense, dogma represents a rigid and uncompromising adherence to established beliefs, even in the face of contradictory evidence or alternative viewpoints. It can limit critical thinking and stifle open-mindedness.

Ways I have adjusted my yoga practice:

  1. I still train daily, 6/7 days are really structured, where one day is long, and the next is short. This alternates between “hard and soft days.”
  2. I have incorporated Iyengar Yoga Method, Strength Training and Running into my training, to complement Ashtanga Yoga Method. On my short vinyasa days, I use props and do some static stretching and postures outside of vinyasa
  3. I have added muscle to my body and am making tradeoffs with asanas I can afford to part with, in exchange for the extra size.

I focus on yogic behavior code and ethics more than on the physical aspects of yoga. I I ask myself "Am I becoming a better person?"
How I’ve become less dogmatic about eating:

    1. I Focus on Whole Foods and Nutrient Density
    1. I Eat Moderate Portions
    1. I Listen to my body: I Eat when I’m hungry and stop when I’m satisfied. This intuitive approach to eating can help you build a healthier relationship with food.
    1. Evidence-Based Choices: Make dietary choices based on scientific evidence and individual needs. HIGH PROTEIN vs. LOW Protein debate. I follow the VIOME RECOMMENDATIONS.

Hello Everyone!

Episode 54 is all about finding your mojo, if you've lost it in life's second half.

I define mojo like this:

"Mojo" is an informal term that refers to an individual's personal power, confidence, or charisma. It represents a person's unique ability to attract success, create positive energy, and confidently navigate life's challenges. Mojo is often associated with a sense of vitality, enthusiasm, and the ability to achieve one's goals with flair and style. It's that intangible quality that makes someone stand out, radiate confidence, and live life to the fullest. Finding or reconnecting with one's mojo typically involves a journey of self-discovery and self-confidence building.

I offer five tips for reconnecting with your mojo, then expound upon each suggestion.

The five suggestions are:

  1. Strengthen your ankles
  2. Perfect your gut health
  3. Join a community where folks know your name and wonder about how you’re doing
  4. Connect with nature (earthing/grounding)
  5. Explore creative outlets (like writing, the arts, or music/singing.)

On episode 47 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast, I delve into the profound yogic principle of svadhyaya, which translates to self-study. Svadhyaya isn't merely a theoretical concept; for me, it's been a cornerstone emphasizing the deep significance of self-reflection, introspection, and personal study throughout my spiritual journey.

I share six practices/techniques for self study, which can lead to profound insights.

Vinyasa Yoga:
My experience with vinyasa yoga has taught me that it's more than a series of postures. It’s a poetic dance of breath, movement, and keen awareness that evokes introspection. As I transition from one asana to another, I consistently confront the intricate layers of my body and spirit. This isn't just a physical discipline for me; it's a transformative pathway into svadhyaya, where I've unearthed deep insights into my thought processes, emotions, and intrinsic nature.

Meditation Practice:
Through meditation, I've been able to dive deep into the tranquil depths of my mind. Whether I practice mindfulness or focus on specific thoughts, meditation has been a wellspring of clarity and emotional balance, shedding light on my ever-evolving patterns and feelings.

Wearing a Biometric Device:
In embracing modern technology, I've found that biometric devices serve as invaluable tools for self-study. These devices, like the Whoop Strap I wear, have given me a data-driven reflection of my physical well-being, daily rhythms, and emotional states.

Journaling:
In my youth journaling has been a canvas, capturing my thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Each entry acts as a portal, letting me revisit moments, understand recurring themes in my life, and process complex emotions.

Psychotherapy/Counseling:
Through my sessions in NLP counseling, I've been able to navigate deeper into my psyche. These professional engagements have helped me unpack past experiences, current behaviors, and future aspirations, offering nuanced perspectives on my motivations and fears.

Asking for Feedback:
I’ve always believed in the power of feedback. Listening to others' perceptions, compared against my self-view, has provided a holistic perspective on my journey. When I started teaching yoga, I asked for valuable feedback on my teaching methods and style from advanced teachers. Their insights were very helpful in my evolution.

Join me in this episode as I share my personal voyage into svadhyaya, revealing the pathways I've taken to understand my strengths, weaknesses, patterns, and deep-rooted motivations. After all, the journey into oneself is perhaps the most enriching, shaping our well-being, personal growth, and the essence of mindful living.

Welcome to Episode 44 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast where I discuss "The Art of Ashtanga Yoga." In this episode, I take you along my personal journey with Ashtanga Yoga, a practice that's spanned over two decades and continues to teach me every day.

We kick off with the fascinating history of Ashtanga Yoga, exploring the lineage from Sri K. Pattabhi Jois to T. Krishnamacharya, all the way back to Ramamohana Brahmachari. Their contributions have shaped Ashtanga into the transformative practice we know today.

I then delve into the practice and technique of Ashtanga Yoga, painting a vivid picture of the tranquil Mysore sessions, the resonating sound of Ujjayi breath, and the methodical step-by-step learning process. We look at the powerful combination of breath, bandha, and drishti, and the dynamic transitions of jumping back and through.

A path as demanding as Ashtanga Yoga is not without its obstacles. I share my struggles with late nights, battling old habits, and maintaining discipline. But despite these obstacles, I discuss how the Ashtanga community remains interconnected on a global scale, citing examples from AYV, AYB, and AYNY.

Next, I share my insights on what full devotion to a practice like Ashtanga feels like. From prioritizing practice first thing in the morning to observing the character-building effects of consistent practice, I delve into the profound impact of such commitment. I speak about the respect and admiration we can have for fellow practitioners, acknowledging their focus and consistency.

Finally, I discuss my "Second Study" of Ashtanga Yoga that began on January 1st, 2023. This new chapter has taught me to listen to my body more intently and approach the practice with patience. I talk about the wisdom in accepting changes and adapting my practice as needed, guided by the universe's cues.

My journey with Ashtanga Yoga has shown me the power of dedicating oneself completely to a practice you love

Welcome, mindful agers, to Episode 43 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. Today, we're delving deep into yoga philosophy to uncover how understanding and practicing a key yogic concept can lead to meaningful behavior change.

Start of The Vritti Samskara Chakra Presentation: 17:12

Introduction to Vritti-Samskara-Chakra
We start off by laying some groundwork, explaining the Sanskrit concepts of vritti, samskara, and chakra. Although they may initially seem esoteric, I assure you that they have practical, day-to-day implications for how we live and change our behaviors.

Unpacking Vritti
We dive into the concept of vritti - the modifications or fluctuations of the mind. Understanding vrittis can give us deeper insight into how our thoughts, emotions, and perceptions shape our daily experiences.

Understanding Samskara
From vrittis, we move onto the idea of samskara. These are latent imprints from past experiences that influence our behaviors, reactions, and habits. I share some personal examples to help illustrate this concept.

Exploring the Meaning of Chakra
Even though the chakra system doesn't feature prominently in Patanjali's Yoga Sutras, it's a core aspect of certain yoga traditions. I provide a brief introduction to this energy system and discuss how it could be influenced by our vrittis and samskaras, to create a repeating mental pattern.

Vritti-Samskara-Chakra and Behavior Change
Once we understand these concepts, we explore how they can inform behavior change. I talk about how samskaras can create recurring vrittis, leading to deeply ingrained patterns, and how understanding this process can help us break free from unhelpful cycles.

Yoga Practices for Behavior Change
In the latter part of the episode, we turn to specific yoga practices that can help us lighten the load of our past, reducing the influence of our samskaras, and making space for healthier patterns. I discuss various techniques from asana practices to pranayama, from meditation and mindfulness to mantra chanting, and even the study of sacred texts.

Closing Thoughts
We wrap up with some final reflections on the transformative potential of these practices. Through understanding and working with our vrittis and samskaras, and harnessing the wisdom of yoga, we can replace outdated and unhealthy tendencies with more resourceful and healthier ways of being.

Thank you for joining me for this enlightening episode. I always welcome your feedback and questions. Stay mindful, and I'll see you in the next episode!

Welcome back, dear listeners, to episode 41 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. This is your host, Jai Sugrim, and today I want to delve into an important topic, one I've titled "The Question AI is Asking Us."

In these transformative times, we are witnessing an unprecedented acceleration of technological advancement, specifically in artificial intelligence (AI). As we move forward, I propose we use AI's computational power as a mirror, reflecting the most authentic versions of ourselves back to us. We can do this by analyzing our personal data in a health-oriented way.

Our data, detached from emotions, stands unbiased and non-judgmental. It doesn't care about our feelings, it doesn't favor a narrative; it's just raw, objective information. By assessing this data, we can gain unique insights about our physical and mental health, allowing us to work on specific areas of improvement.

With AI as our tool, we can continue to evolve and grow alongside it, utilizing its objectivity to answer the age-old question: "Who am I?" In reality, we are all beings of body, mind, and spirit, a unique fusion of the material and the ethereal.

There's an enchanting possibility that consciousness isn't secondary to matter but is rather primary, and from it, matter arises. If so, then all of matter, including us and the AI we develop, might be imbued with consciousness. We are more connected to our world and to each other than we've ever realized.

Let's embrace this journey of co-evolution with AI. Let's seize the opportunity to know ourselves deeper than ever before. Let's harness the computational power of AI to get healthier, clearer, and wiser. Stay tuned, and as always, keep aging mindfully.

Hello everyone,

In episode 40 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast, I had the honor of speaking with Dr. Momo Vuyisich, the co-founder and chief science officer of Viome, a company pioneering the field of health science and gut health.

I was genuinely astounded to learn about the intricate, AI-driven process Viome uses to analyze biological samples – a process that involves absolutely no human intervention. This really drove home the fact that we are indeed living in an era where technology and health are rapidly converging, opening up brand new possibilities for our wellness.

One of the standout moments of our conversation was when Dr. Vuyisich eloquently explained the gut-brain axis – a complex system that links our digestive tract and cognitive function. His insight deepened my understanding of how crucial gut health truly is, not only for our physical wellness, but also for our mental wellbeing.

Throughout our enlightening and uplifting conversation, we touched on numerous topics that I believe will pique your interest and, hopefully, inspire you to consider your own health from a new perspective. It's a testament to the exciting times we're living in, where understanding our bodies and cultivating mindful aging is more achievable than ever.

I invite you to tune in to this informative and engaging episode. I'm confident you'll walk away with valuable insights and, perhaps, a new perspective on the integral role that our gut plays in our overall health and longevity.

Om Shanti, Shanti, Shanti!

Welcome to the podcast folks, I'm your host, Jai Sugrim, and I am incredibly excited to share with you Episode 37 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. This episode offers an intimate glance into my private coaching calls and a deep-dive into a truly healing conversation with my client, Robert R. This exchange provides a precious opportunity for us to explore the intersection of spiritual matters and practical aspects of yoga in our daily lives.
The conversation begins at: 26:11

Robert, like many of us, is juggling a demanding full-time office job alongside an ambitious yoga asana training program. While enthusiasm for personal growth and development is commendable, it's important that we balance ambition with reality and ensure our practices are both nourishing and sustainable. As we traverse this journey together, Robert and I discover that sometimes, the greatest act of self-care can be to scale back and adjust our expectations, allowing for greater harmony in our lives.

Throughout our conversation, we delve deep into yoga philosophy. We discuss how spiritual teachings can enlighten our understanding of personal boundaries and energy management. Yoga, in its holistic sense, is not just about the asanas; it is a way of life that guides us to live mindfully and with greater consciousness.

In this episode, you'll witness firsthand the nuances of a coaching relationship. You'll experience the delicate balance between challenge and compassion, the dance between pushing for growth while still maintaining reverence for one's current state of being.

In this real-time coaching call, you'll witness us reconfigure Robert's yoga asana training program, ensuring that it complements his lifestyle rather than competes with it. We spend a considerable amount of time dissecting what's not working, brainstorming solutions, and crafting a more sustainable, supportive, and achievable yoga routine for him.

In addition to this practical advice, we discuss larger spiritual themes related to the practice of yoga and mindful aging. We contemplate how the yoga philosophy can inform our perspective on work-life balance and personal growth, ultimately guiding us towards a more serene and fulfilled existence.

Remember, balance is the essence of a mindful life. As we age, it is important to honor our bodies, respect our boundaries, and cultivate a deeper sense of self-awareness and acceptance. Our journey on the mat is not just about achieving the next pose; it's about understanding our own bodies, minds, and spirits.

Thank you for joining me for Episode 37 of The Art of Aging Mindfully Podcast. I hope our healing conversation resonates with you and provides a roadmap for your own mindful aging journey.

Welcome to the pod folks!

Episode 31 is all about "Aging Mindfully with The Philosophy of Vedanta."

Vedanta philosophy is a spiritual tradition originating from ancient India that emphasizes the oneness of all beings and the ultimate reality of existence. It teaches that the true nature of the self is pure consciousness, which is beyond the limitations of the body and mind.

As we age, we become more aware of the impermanence of life and the inevitability of death. Vedanta philosophy offers a way to approach this stage of life with mindfulness and acceptance, allowing us to find meaning and purpose in our later years.

On this show I talk about how Vedanta Philosophy helps us to live better lives. I discuss:

  • The Role of Vedantic Self-Reflection in Dropping Negative Tendencies

  • The Importance of Service in Vedanta Philosophy

Welcome to the pod Folks!

On Episode 30 I talk about the difficulty in Identifying a true expert!

In today's world, it can be difficult to find a true expert for several reasons:

  1. Overload of information: With the internet and social media, we have access to an overwhelming amount of information. It can be difficult to separate the true experts from those who are simply presenting themselves as experts.
  2. Limited attention span: In a world where we are constantly bombarded with information, many people have limited attention spans. They may not have the time or patience to seek out true experts and may rely on superficial sources of information instead.
  3. Misinformation: Unfortunately, there is a lot of misinformation out there, and it can be difficult to distinguish between what is true and what is not. This can make it difficult to identify true experts and can lead to confusion and mistrust.
  4. Lack of regulation: In some fields, there is a lack of regulation and oversight, which can make it easier for people to present themselves as experts without actually having the necessary knowledge and experience.
  5. Bias and personal agendas: Even when someone is presenting themselves as an expert, they may have biases or personal agendas that can affect their recommendations and advice.

Overall, it can be difficult to find a true expert in today's world because of the overwhelming amount of information, limited attention spans, misinformation, lack of regulation, and biases and personal agendas. However, with careful research and discernment, it is still possible to identify true experts and benefit from their knowledge and expertise.

When looking for a expert look for a handful of traits:

10 Characteristics of a True Expert

  1. Credentials
  2. Experience
  3. Continuous Learning
  4. Clear Communication
  5. Critical Thinking
  6. Humility
  7. Passion
  8. Curiosity, or the pursuit of continuous learning
  9. Ability to Innovate and Integrate
  10. Deep Knowledge

Hey Everyone, Welcome to the podcast!

Episode 29 is all about Exploring The Possibility of Reincarnation.

Reincarnation is the belief that a soul or spirit can be reborn in a new body after death.

On this show I explain karma, and its relationship to the cycle of birth and death.

My Motivations for Talking about Reincarnation Include:

  • The Half Marathon I just finished at West Point was an inspiring death practice
  • It was connected to liberation, when I finished the race.
  • Someone died in the flames of my effort, it was the person with the limiting belief
  • The Philosophy of reincarnation can bring the mind into a subtle place.
  • We need peace right now on the earth, and spiritual practices demand that the practitioner become peaceful rather than wait for peace to be handed out from a top down paradigm
  • Spirituality for me is bottoms up, ALWAYS

  1. The Rebrand and how comfortable it feels to be dialed into my niche!

  2. The arch of my professional career: I am sharing what I have gleaned from 28 years of professional experience, first as a Personal Trainer, Licensed Massage Therapist, and then as a Yoga Teacher and Health Coach. Lots of juice and the feel of life was experience through powerful one on one connections with my clients.

  3. I Explain the meaning of the phrase we train to master our own mind

  4. I talk about the importance of prevention in aging

5. The power of mindset in aging

6. The Art of Aging Mindfully as a Community

The phrase "we train to master our own mind" refers to the idea that we should strive to control and direct our thoughts, rather than being controlled by them. This means not being a slave to our desires, the sensations of the body, or external temptations that can pull us away from our sense of inner balance and clarity. Instead, we should train ourselves to focus our minds and cultivate positive patterns of thought that can lead us towards a more fulfilling and interesting life. This may involve practices such as yoga, breath control, meditation, or other mental disciplines that help us to develop greater control over our thoughts and emotions. By mastering our own minds, we can better navigate the challenges of life with grace and clarity, and find greater happiness and fulfillment in the process.

Welcome to the podcast everyone!

Today's show offers a guided meditation practice that focuses on Gratitude.

The Meditation practice begins at 23:47
Go right to that spot if you want to follow along with the practice.

On the intro I "check in" with my state of mind, on the day before thanksgiving 2022. I share six things that I'm most grateful for.

  1. I’m grateful for my health. In 2022 I battled lyme disease, and fixed my immune system to battle all pathogens

  2. I’m grateful for my partner, and the power of working together vs. working solo

  3. **I’m grateful for the vision of problems being opportunities, an old NLP point of view

  4. I’m grateful for the amount of people that are moderates and willing to work on cohering as one people sharing one planet.

  5. I’m grateful to be alive at a very exciting phase shift in humanity’s journey. I will see a lot of change in one lifetime**

  6. I’m grateful that consciousness has already shifted and that spiritual practices like meditation, self care, and mental wellness are going mainstream.

Hello Everyone, Welcome to the podcast. Episode 39 is all about the destabilizing effect that committing to a long term spiritual practice can have on our lives. This recurring destabilization for the long term spiritual aspirant is often challenging, but tied to immeasurable personal growth, and long term positive changes.

The title of this show is called The 108 Funerals of The Spiritual Aspirant and could easily be called the 1008 and Funerals… because on the lifelong path of yoga or any spiritual discipline, there many tiny changes.

When we go deeper, and release something from our past that was holding us back, we change, we evolve, and it’s like that old part of us, that was attached to a negative tendency dies, and we must acclimate to a new way of being. Over a long time, we can experience many deaths to the different aspects of our ego and personality.

Life is inherently destabilizing, think of experiences like the death of a loved one, divorce, or loss of one’s job and income.

The difference between normal folks and spiritual folks is that the spiritualist will often engage challenging practices on purpose or swing the ax of destruction into their lives in order to learn. When we do this consciously it is called SADHANA.

This work is arduous, lonely and at times gut wrenching.

**On This episode I'm not going to trample on the process of Spiritual Maturity or Personal Growth, and I’m not going to necessarily promote any one safe way to go about a long term spiritual practice. Instead, I’m here as a realist and as your cheerleader.

My main goal today is to cheer you on and encourage you through the tough, destabilizing times, and to acknowledge and illustrate through the use of personal stories, that SOME INCREDIBLE GROWTH CAN ARISE FROM THE HARD ENTERING INTO THE UNKNOWNS, THE VOIDS, AND EXPLORING THE DARK SIDES OF OUR NATURE.**

I will also have many integration tips sprinkled throughout the storytelling, so that you may structure your own practices in as healthy a way as possible.

Welcome to the podcast everyone!

Have you ever wondered about reincarnation, your coming death, or the meaning of life?

Have you ever pondered the eternal question: Who am I?

If so you'll really dig this episode where I read one of the sacred texts of India, called the "Katha Upanishad."

This is the story of a young boy, a brahmin, who gets the chance to have three wishes granted by the lord of death, named Yama.

The Boy, Nachiketas, asks Yama, in his third wish, to reveal the secrets of what happens to us when we die.

This is a story packed with universal wisdom, about the different paths we can take in life. It is a Vedantic teaching, steeped in a wisdom that transcends time, and which can be used to soothe a busy, fragmented mind.

The text can be listened to as a meditation, a yoga nidra, or even as a bedtime story.
The reading of the text begins at: 27:20

The Intro is extremely useful and has some great backstory that can help open one's imagination for the text. However, skip to the actual poem, if you wish to interpret teaching for yourself.

On Episode 37 of the podcast I recommend three forms of exercise that should be incorporated into an overall training program for living a long healthy life.

I believe that everyone in the second half of life should work towards 6 hours of exercise weekly, if they wish to “hack” their way to 100, with most of those years being healthy.

In a nutshell, and one broad brushstroke, all you have to do is run, lift weights, do yoga, sleep well and eat healthy. These factors are simplified and of course can be individuated, because for example, not everyone can run today, and fast walking or a bicycle ride will do the job for those folks. But the overarching objectives of this simple suggestion are to work the heart and blood vessels, strengthen the muscles and skeleton, maintain mobility of the spine and major joints, keep the brain healthy, nourish the body with good food, and create room for adequate recovery.

For this episode I don’t tackle all of the keys to longevity, and instead focus on what I believe is primary, as we will hone our focus on training/exercise programming.

Extending our health span will be related to how well we train the cardiovascular system, the musculoskeletal system, and our mobility.

On the show I share my personal exercise program, as well as suggestions of how you can create “structured experiments” so you can find your own path, and bow to what works for you, on the journey to optimal health. The Jai Sugrim Method Podcast is sponsored by Commons CBD

**Welcome to the show everyone,

On episode 36 I share my experience of one of the cornerstones of yoga philosophy called “the 8 limbs of yoga.”**

The 8 limbs are a classical, old school, traditional way of practicing yoga.

They are from an ancient text called TheYoga Sutras, and were compiled in the early centuries CE, by the sage Patanjali in India. Master Patanjali synthesized and organized knowledge about yoga from much older traditions.

Master Patanjali's collection of Sanskrit sutras that attempt to systematize yoga. The 196 aphorisms, once unpacked, can help us with the theory and practice of yoga. The Sutras form a practical guide on the subject of how to attain liberation from suffering.

Patanjali’s yoga method is concerned with control. Control of Body, Mind and Senses.

Think of a flower with 8 petals and each petal represents a practice. The 8 petals on that flower are the 8 limbs:

WHAT ARE THE 8 LIMBS OF YOGA?

  1. Restraint(s) or Abstentations
  2. Observance
  3. Posture
  4. Breath Control
  5. Withdrawal of the Senses
  6. Concentration
  7. Meditation
  8. Pure Contemplation/Ecstasy

I hope that this episode can inspire you to uncover the philosophy embedded in and behind the asana practice. May it fuel your practice and personal transformation!!!!

Hello Friends,

On Episode 35 of the podcast, I speak with one of the great yoga teachers of our time, Jeffrey Villaneuva, on "The Influence of Ashtanga Yoga on Our Lives."

The Ashtanga Yoga Method is a very vigorous, effortful practice that builds a lot of devotion in the practitioner who takes to it, consistently. Jeff and I are steeped in continuous practice, and on this episode we riff on the what we've learned from the longer arch of our personal journeys.

Listeners can expect honesty, realism, and inspiration from this conversation.

Jeff is an inspiration to me for his devotion, and self discipline. He's also a very kind, soft spoken and charming guy whose spirit shines when you interact with him. Enjoy the journey of this episode, with two gristled, old Ashtangis, who bow to the power of daily practice.

Welcome to the show folks!!!

Episode 34 is a play by play, multi-day recording of my 72 hour water fast. I usually fast 4 times per year, as the seasons turn from one to the next.

Since I am an experienced faster, I continued my daily yoga practice, and did some work during the 3 days of not eating any food. I do not recommend this if you want to try your first fast. Instead it is best to take off from work, rest more, and remain as chill and meditative as possible.

**Hey Guys and Gals welcome to the podcast!

This episode is a personal share, as I “wonder out loud” about the key things happening in my life.**

The show mirrors an exercise that I start all of my one on one sessions with. I call it “checking in.” Checking in happens when we open up, about what is happening inside of us, while someone outside of us holds "solid space."

At 47 years of age, new desires are coming up, and new challenges are appearing all around me.

In a nutshell, this episode will be me sharing what's most relevant to me, right now. It’s my hope that listeners will learn something from the way I am coding my personal story, goals and community building through the lens of a spiritual practice.

**On this episode I’ll wax poetic on the following 9 ideas:

  1. Recently contacting lyme disease, and the process of healing that is ahead (about my health)**

  2. Travelling less & teaching more, in one place (about my maturing mind)

3. Healing Intra-generational trauma, (about my visit home)

  1. **Mentoring the next generation, authentically (about young students that study with me.

  2. Becoming loving. To get love, to be in a loving relationship, you have to be loving. You have to transform and vibrate at the frequency of what it is you want. (about my relationship)

  3. The magic of owning property (about discovering what type of place you want to root in)**

  4. **The tragedy and beauty of podcasting in real time, at your current level of thinking, with your present level of development.

  5. The power of getting back in my own lane (about enhancing my competence)

  6. The power of building a robust community (about the bonds that hold us together)**

Welcome to the podcast everyone.

On Episode 31, I describe the basics of yoga philosophy in 3 basic chunks, and along the way, I illustrate how these teachings have been applied to my life in an illuminating way.

I first interpret the first four yoga sutras of master Patanjali, in order to arrive at a clear working definition of yoga. This way we know the goal of practice, as codified by one of the masters of the past.

Then I share the 8 limbed path of yoga, to expound upon a multi - pronged approach to attaining mastery of the mind. Here we learn about the yoga toolbox

Lastly I describe the codes of behaviour, or ways of being that can help an aspirant achieve yoga, through the lens of practices called yama, and niyama.

The story begins at 48 seconds

In October of 2013 I lived for 28 days, deep inside of the Amazon Jungle, to study shamanism with my Teacher. I committed to drinking master plants of the jungle, under the Shaman's guidance, while living in total solitude.

This is the story of the most adventurous trip I have ever had, and a life defining moment. It is about the power of the jungle to teach, heal and inspire us to live our best life.

There is a little bit about Ayahuasca, but not a ton, because that is the subject for another show/chapter. Ayahuasca is deeply personal for me, and will be shared at another moment. Instead, I talk about the power of my teacher, and the depth of my curiosity to know about the mysteries of life, death, and rebirth. I wanted to EXPERIENCE the teachings of yoga, and to know directly, the meanings of the greatest Vedic Mantras.

My thirst for knowledge was quenched, and gave me a lot of downloads, which would take years and years to integrate into my "normal life."

The Story begins at 2:30, but since the intro is short, I'd listen to this from beginning to end, as I do hang an important frame around the conversation, that sort of answers the WHY question. Why in the world would someone willingly endure so much hardship, to attain Self Knowledge?

On this episode of the podcast, I welcome back to the show, for the second time, teacher and guide, Evacheska deAngelis.

We discuss the role of divine masculinity and divine femininity in our work as teachers and helpers to others on the path of self realization. There are many personal shares from each of our life journey, to help illustrate some of the more abstract concepts that arise from our conversation.
The conversation kicks off at 7:53

Evacheska and I share our thoughts on how to balance these two energies within our bodies and psyches. When there is harmony between the inner male and female, profound insight and integration may come.

Evacheska also offers one-on-one guidance through Zoom, and in-person guidance for deeper Psyche-Spiritual ceremonial work. No matter how she is engaging in her work, her fundamental belief is that each individual has the power to heal themselves. Therefore, the purpose of Sotto Luce is simply to act as a conduit, supporting and guiding the innate transformational energies within us all.

Welcome to the podcast Folks!

On this Episode of the show, I have a discussion on Psychedelic Therapy with The hosts of the Men Talking Mindfulness Podcast, Will Schneider and Jon Macaskill.

We discuss the importance of set and setting, if one is to try psychedelics. You want to have a good "mindset" and be in a safe stable place, with guidance if available.

Each of us share our personal history with psychedelics, as well as how they are tools for learning, and as such should be respected.

We all came to psychedelics late in life, and as such had a fully developed brain, as well as a foundation of discipline to stand on. Self discipline allows one to more readily integrate the teachings of psychedelics into one's life, practically.

Everyone also agreed that there is a line between use and abuse with all things, and that awareness should be brought to the boundary between these two approaches to psychedelic use.

Enjoy the episode and please share with anyone who would benefit from an enlightening conversation!

**Hello Everyone,

Welcome to the podcast!**

**It’s Monday April 25th, 2022. I ran the Brooklyn Marathon yesterday and on today’s episode of the podcast, I describe the psychology of marathon running. I discuss four aspects of a marathon from 1. WHY (why do we attempt the impossible?) 2. The process of training, 3. The type of head it takes for execution of the goal on race day, and 4. Integration of the experience into one’s life going forward, after the big race is done.

3:52 - Start of the Story!!!

  1. Why Did I sign up for the Brooklyn Marathon?**

-I wanted to get back into my own lane, after a year of exploring politics and the culture wars.

- I wanted to prioritize my highest desire over my lower desires. My highest desire is to bring people together.

2. What was the Preparation and Training like?

-I relied on guts, positive male aggression, and muscle memory because of a short training period. I usually like at least 10 months of training for a marathon

- I had to embrace the challenge of training in winter for this marathon

- I intentionally chose hardship, as a way to strengthen the personal discipline muscle!

3. Execution of the goal

-Race day is a battle against yourself, you are outrunning your shadow, limiting beliefs, and lower drives. The competition is with yourself not other runners.

-You are certainly going to hit the wall, you know this in advance. What will you do, when your body gives up, will you find a way to persist, or will you quit?

-One has to connect to the energy of steadiness, and think long term. It is a journey and a process, like life, and in no way is it an explosive sprint.

  1. Integration of lessons learned

-I am open to the marathon not being my ideal distance, it is perhaps 13.1 that is the run I will continue to engage with the coming years

- I immediately downgraded my weekly mileage to 25 miles per week on Strava, to favor the integration of yoga and cross training into my weekly program.

- I want to be able to run for one hour straight, with good form, a few times per week, for as long as possible, going forward.

-Running is going to be a part of my life, but not my whole life. It becomes one’s whole life when one begins to log a lot of miles.

**-Heat removes impurities from the mind and body.

Hi Guys and Gals!

Meet Evacheska de'Angelis - Healing Intuitive, Mindfulness Practitioner, & Spiritual Guide

We dove right in on this episode and started talking about the sacred plant and brew ayahuasca. The spirit of the plant opens gateways in our consciousness, when drunk ceremonially, under the guidance of a trained shaman. One can learn astonishing new ways of perceiving reality and one's relationship to reality.
The Conversation Starts at 7:35

A little bit about Evacheska....

Based out of New York, Evacheska has dedicated her energy and life’s work to creating and holding space for the facilitation of healing and expansion. She leverages her multisensory perception abilities to create distinctive experiences focused on supporting each participant’s internal work.

She is a certified Mindfulness and Meditation facilitator, Integrative Coach, Trauma and Somatics Practitioner, and Psych-K® facilitator. From a very young age, she has been aware of energetic fields, and her deep intuition and sensitivity have been passed down from mother to daughter as the first born of the first born for many generations. While she greatly learned how to hold space from intimately observing her parents’ work in similar fields, she is currently expanding her knowledge base via the pursuit of a degree in psychology at CUNY, as well as continuing her ongoing studies of the power of plant medicines, of which she has worked with many.

Incorporated into the work of Sotto Luce is the belief in the intersection of spirituality and science: that which we can see and that which we can not. Evacheska and the Sotto Luce team currently lead seminars on Quantum Time Manifestation, and Harnessing Personal Power, and Mindfulness Meditation and Medicine Music circles. Within the Sotto Luce offerings, you can also find Women’s Circles and Men’s Circles focused on Divine Feminine and Divine Masculine embodiment, respectively.

On this episode of the podcast I speak with cannabis entrepreneur - Tahira Rehmatullah.

We take a deep dive into our shared love for the plant that saves lives, opens doors, and brings people together. Tahira shares her story about her personal journey of entrepreneurship, working in venture capital, and her goal of creating more fairness and equality of opportunity in the world.

I really enjoyed our conversation. As a long time cannabis activist, I learned more about the process of legalization, and the importance of the times we live in. Consciousness is clearly rising and Taharia is on the front lines of a societal shift.

Hi Folks Welcome to the podcast!

On this episode I share the personal story of my evolving relationship with Cannabis, which spans 20 years. I first used Marijuana at age 26, recreationally. I then went on to use it in as a coping mechanism for grief and got addicted to it, then later ritualized it's use, before learning how to use it as a healing medicine and as a special sacrament.

This is my personal journey, as there is not one specific way for all persons to relate to the spirit of Cannabis!

**Welcome to the podcast Guys and Gals! This episode is all about how to get in shape during a pandemic . This is an incredible time to make a changes, because everything is being shaken up and transforming all around us anyway. Pressure makes diamonds. There is incredible social pressure to conform, but the universe wants you to go your own way. Just remember, a person of any age, and any fitness level can get healthier

These are the useful tips for getting healthier, on this episode of the podcast.**

  1. Use your left hand or non dominant hand

I learned about this in the jungle, from the universe, then later I realized that it was a shamanic technique. The left hand helps with neuroplasticity and making changes as we adjust our habits.

2. Find an experienced teacher who’s mental framework you admire

This will put you in a methodical track and build a solid foundation that you will branch out from later on. Maintain a sense of boundaries with your teacher, it’s a two way street/

**3. Practice Periodization (Intelligent Program Design)

I describe my current routine of a 46 year old man's training program. You should commit to 5 Days on, Two Off, when exercising. The goal is to focus on training 5 days per week, and resting two for days. I recommend training Monday - Friday for at least 30 - 60 minutes.

  1. Breathe through your nose, and breathe less. Read Jame’s Nestor’s book, "Breathe".**

**I describe the major life improving benefits of Ujjaiyi Breathing. I also talk about the benefits of taking fewer breaths per minute.

  1. Start a meditation or mindfulness practice**

**6. Monitor the low grade continuous stress response

  1. Get good rest!

On this episode of the podcast I speak with Chiyoko Osborne, about the “Akashic Records”, a field of information that includes all possibilities. When we attain concentration and become a “channel” we can literally download information about our past, and potential futures. This information can help contextualize trauma and provide insight on the path we are currently walking. The information can be used for healing, by letting go of our attachments, and by helping us to make positive changes in our lifestyle and current tendencies.

Chiyoko and I really open up about the challenges of the spiritual path, and about the importance of “process” as we grow and transform towards a state of empowered living.

Chiyoko helps leaders across multiple fields access Peak Performance through Flow States: that sweet-spot of brain-body optimization where you are working smarter, not harder, across the board. She creates your personalized, 6-step Peak Performance Formula program that optimizes your systems and daily routines to increase productivity in all areas of life. Program tools are all scientifically-proven and combine the best of modern neuroscience and biohacking with ancient wisdom systems, like mindfulness and meditation.

I really enjoyed our discussion about the subtle layers of spiritual practice.

Hello Everyone, welcome to the podcast!

On this episode I speak with Jonathan Rosenthal, M.D. to learn more about how yoga practice affects the brain and how the brain affects yoga practice. This was a fun, educational conversational that allowed me to learn more about the effects of my practice. If you like learning, this episode will be yummy food for your big brain.

A bit about Jonathan:

Jonathan is a resident physician at NYU School of Medicine. He graduated with a Summa Cum Laude Bachelor of Science in Neural Science from NYU’s College of Arts and Science, and an Accelerated 3-Year MD from NYU’s School of Medicine. He views science and math as sophisticated languages for distilling the simple from the complex, and loves sharing his excitement for these fields.

After years of practicing and refining his studentship, he strives to share the tips and tricks he has learned to help students build their understanding. He believes that understanding is the goal, and tests are just a measure of understanding. The successful academic path is paved by placing the focus on understanding, not memorization, and removing any obstacles that impede the measurement of understanding (e.g. test anxiety).

He has been tutoring since 2010, and currently tutors biology, chemistry, physics, math through calculus, ISEE, SAT, ACT, and MCAT. He is available for virtual tutoring, and has worked with students all over the world.

As a yoga teacher, Jonathan has studied with Sri Dharma Mittra in New York City since 2011. He completed his 200 hour certification in June 2013 and has been teaching at the Dharma Yoga Center since. He includes mindfulness practices in sessions to improve student resilience, outlook, and performance.

I had a kick ass conversation with one of NYC's greatest yoga teachers, David Regelin! We talked about training the body, the mindset behind practice, and how one's relationship to practice evolves over time.

David created the "Multi-Intenso" experience, a class that garnered a cult following in New York City. "Multi-Intenso" is a technique based, athletic and dynamic style of yoga centered around handstands. Over time, David's reflective nature and incessant personal investigation into the potential transformative powers that a yoga practice can give, has led him to a more comprehensive approach to how physical form relates to psychological and emotional states. Inclined toward the mystical and timeless, greatly influenced by intensive study with Nevine Michaan, David's practice and teaching has evolved into a more refined adaptation of how an asana (postural) practice can instigate profound mind-body awareness.

I learned a lot from one of the veterans of the teaching game. Thank You David!

On this episode of the podcast I had a really engaging conversation with my friend Alyssa Gruber.

We discuss the intersection of spirituality and mental health, and admit that sometimes "awakening" to the true nature of reality and spirit can be a messy ordeal. We talk about the importance of a daily practice and having a "lifeline", someone one can reach out to for support, if life gets overwhelming.

Alyssa holds a BA in Psychology from Reed College, a MA in Counseling Psychology from Lewis & Clark College, a MA in Psychology from The New School University and PhD matriculation in Psychology from The New School University. Alyssa, as psychological and spiritual wellness counselor, specializes in addiction recovery, trauma/PTSD, depression, anxiety, grief, body disorders, abuse recovery, and marriage/family counseling. She works with clients to help them overcome past trauma, to build resilience; so they can live fully and joyfully in the present moment. Alyssa additionally teaches meditation as path to healthy living. She believes that the body, mind, soul triad points us to the concept that everything is interconnected. With over 20 years experience, Alyssa is expert in facilitating growth and clarity, equipping clients with the suite of skills needed to heal, and thereby achieve the life of their dreams.

Anand J. Sukhadia is a young, passionate entrepreneur who is a direct lineage holder in the Vedic Tradition. Anand has deep insight into the true application of the yogic teachings.

In this conversation, Anand and I dive deeply into the questioning nature of one who pursues spirituality. We explore the eternal dharma and how the ancient wisdom of our ancestors can be applied to sense making in modern living. Our world is filled with information overload on our senses, and in weeding through untruth to find truth, we honor freedom of speech and reserve the right to ask important questions of the "cultural narrative". To accept a thought or idea blindly is to walk the path of ignorance. To develop actual experience, based on logic, reasoning and concentration is the path of the sadhaka, one who seeks liberation by means of practice and inquiry.

I really enjoyed this deep deep conversation and vibed Anand's inner confidence and enthusiasm for spirituality.

Anand is the founder of Om Life Wellness in Jersey City, N.J. Om Life is a wellness, and recovery spa, that helps clients to optimize their immunity and health. Om Life has float tanks, cryotherapy, massage therapy and a host of other healing modalities that offer healing and wellness to it's clients.

Anand is also the host of the Limitless One Podcast, where he interviews extremely knowledgeable guest on many key areas related to personal development. You will be inspired to ask some deep questions of yourself by listening to Limitless One.

On this episode of podcast I have an uplifting and super engaging conversation with Joshua Greene about the Eternal Teachings of the Bhagavad Gita, an ancient Sanskrit Text. Josh really lifted the wisdom of the past and brought it right into NOW. The accumulated knowledge of our ancestors can help bring light to modern mind.

A bit about Joshua:

After 13 years in ashrams of Europe and India, Joshua M. Greene returned to New York and taught Hinduism and Holocaust history at Hofstra University until retiring in 2013. He lectures on journeys to enlightenment at universities and yoga studios nationwide. His yoga-related books include Here Comes the Sun: The Spiritual and Musical Journey of George Harrison, Swami in a Strange Land: How Krishna Came to the West (a biography of A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami) and Gita Wisdom: An Introduction to India’s Essential Yoga Text.

Josh and I first met at Jivamukti Yoga School in NYC during 2009. He is a teacher to teachers, and a lineage holder in the Bhakti Yoga tradition. Josh always opens my mind & heart with his love for the eternal teachings.

I had a 7 year run with the vegan diet  from the beginning of 2009 to  the spring of 2016. This episode of the podcast is not intended to bash or encourage a vegan lifestyle, and will instead illustrate a few key points about this very personal choice.

On this show I talk about five aspects of  my vegan journey.:

1. I share my psychology as a vegan, and why I initiated the practice

  1. I  share the gains I made as a vegan,

  2. I expose the limitations of a vegan diet.

  3. I share Why I returned to being a healthy omnivore

5.  I share What I typically eat like now, in 2021 and why it works for this current stage of my life

Despite parting ways with veganism, I have no regrets about my time as a vegan. Looking back, these were some of the most interesting & fun years of my life.

On Today’s podcast, I share 5 doors, that open with the practice of meditation. These are levels in our consciousness. By doors, think of “5 Worlds” or “5 Ways of Perceiving” or even “5 Realms”.

I became a seeker early on in life. As a young fella, I simply kept asking question after question, and all of my inquiry brought me into new unfoldings within myself, stage by stage, step by step, breath by breath, to the ultimate life practice of mediation

Quieting the mind opens Five Doors:

1. The Door to The Spiritual Sky

I lead students to an out of body place called the spiritual sky, which I learned about from a book by Robert Bly called “Iron John”. From a higher perspective our problems are not so personal. We each suffer in a unique way with our worries and woes, yet as spirit, we are all on the path home, to our own heart. While way up high in the spiritual sky, we learn to that our suffering is not that personal, and that everyone else is struggling as well. We forgive and embrace ourselves when we touch float through this etheric realm.

2. The door to Infinite LifeThere is a freedom to life that opens up when we release our fear of death. Our every action and thought matter in this life when we open up to the implication that soul that transmigrates, across the ocean of birth and death, repeatedly.

3. The Door to “The peace that passes all understanding”Meditation will exercise and strengthens our Pre Frontal Cortex in the brain. This helps us with impulse control. Impulse control and sticking to a goal, through the painful parts of discipline will yield a new type of satisfaction. We attain profound levels of peace when we are less tempted to waver, by our lower drives.

4. The Door to Interpreting Totems or SymbolsOne is gifted a special vision once one is firmly established in a consistent meditation practice. There are signs all around us. We can learn to decode and apply the meaning of these symbols in our day to day lives.

5. The Door In between Dimensions, or the door to different timelines.

This is the ability to download information from other realms, and the door that opens, when you decide to change the current path you are walking.

Meditation is a capacity of mind that is available to everyone.

From 2014 to 2016 I taught yoga to high school students at Frederick Douglas Academy in Harlem, New York. I had the ride of my life in those two years, because a New York City high school is the perfect place to see if yoga is worth it’s salt. I had worked with kids before, but mainly my profession had become, coaching the ultra rich and famous for a living. Before taking the job, I thought to myself: If high school age teenagers, in the prime of their formative years, developed a personal practice, and then faced life’s challenges with openness and possibility using yogic techniques, then we had gold in our hands.

ON this episode of the podcast I speak Rajay Channer, a young man who is currently a junior at Ithaca College studying Strength and Conditioning. WE first met when Rajay was a sophomore in high school, where He studied yoga with me for two years. I also guided Rajay in the weight room to help him adapt his body to football, during his sophomore and junior years of high school. We talk about strength, resilience and how the practice of yoga and our connection influenced his life path, well into young adulthood. This is a beautiful story of “making a loop”. It’s like time travel. By re-connecting with Rajay for this conversation, I got to see what has transpired years down the line, from day one of a specific goal I set out for myself.

You can jump right to the conversation in the timeline at minute 8:13

There are 5 Elements, or characteristics to A GREAT ADVENTURE. THESE FIVE TRAITS ARE GOING TO BE EVIDENT IN THE TALE I SHARE WITH YOU.

I took all of 2013 off from work to full time pursue my two greatest interests - Yoga & Shamanism. This is the story of the first half of that year where I went to India to explore Yoga, The Motherland , and the space in between my ears, during a six month journey.

The five elements of Adventure are:

1.     Embrace the Unknown

2.     Freedom from (Your) Identity

3.     Be ready to meet Unconventional Teachers in Unconventional Places

4.     Danger. Danger and calibrated risk is intimately connected to adventure

5.     Learn to Trust The Universe/God

BY SHARING THIS PERSONAL STORY, I HOPE TO MAKE YOU SMILE AND TRIGGER THOUGHTS OF YOUR OWN ADVENTURES FROM THE PAST – OR TO inspire you to pursue a dream trip OF YOUR OWN, or A wild FANTASY, at some point if the door opens and gives you an opportunity to plan and execute.

Everyone must have one big adventure before dying.

Hi Guys, welcome to the podcast. In the debut episode I talk about the time when I was 25 and 26 years old and I worked for the Championship New York Yankees. I was The Massage Therapist and Healer for the team for two years and travelled full time with the squad. It was a huge huge adventure, and provided some valuable life lessons at a time when I was still being shaped into a man.

Here are 6 things I learned at a young age, while working with The New York Yankees.

1.     KISS Keep it Simple Stupid -Simplicity is Purity

2.     Come Back Tomorrow- losing is part of life, come back to win the next day

3.     You Gotta have Antenna 30 feet out of your head -everything is energy
4.     Just Shut Up and work hard when you are young- be humble and train consistently 5.     Be HUNGRY- have energy in your eyes

6.     Ice Water in The Veins- We train to master our own mind

My illustrious career has allowed me to build incredible connections with interesting, healers, scientists teachers and guides. Stay tuned for subsequent episodes, where I have discussions about the process of cultivating mastery. The Jai Sugrim Method, is all about living the best life possible, by modelling excellence and training positive habits.
