Columbia is overflowing with talent, so why does it still feel hard to connect the dots between artists, events, resources, and real support? We close out Season 6 by getting in the weeds on what we’ve learned from years of building a grassroots podcast that’s here for the community first, while still caring about quality, consistency, and craft. You’ll hear us shout out the people who help make the show possible, talk about why renting a podcast studio can be the smartest way to start, and laugh about being “unsullied by sponsors” while still appreciating local support.

We also dig into what’s happening on the ground in Columbia SC: a packed calendar of events, the way football weekends reshape the city, and why festival-style gatherings often succeed where scattered events struggle. From there, we get honest about the tension creators feel around monetization, paying collaborators, and how trust can break down when money and old conflicts are involved. If you’ve ever planned an event, built a brand, or tried to collaborate in a small scene, this conversation will feel familiar.

Then we zoom out to the bigger system: sponsorship dollars, nonprofit funding uncertainty, social media algorithms, demonetization, and why internet regulation still hasn’t caught up to how people communicate. We even use seatbelts as an example of how something meant for safety can also create new problems depending on how it’s enforced. Finally, we share what we want for Season 7: more episodes with just us talking, guests who can explain how government and arts resources actually work, and a few bigger regional voices with Carolina roots who respect the mission. If you enjoyed the ride this season, subscribe, share this recap with a friend, and leave a review so more people can find the stories Columbia is already living.

The world keeps telling us to move faster, produce more, and optimize everything, but your body is keeping receipts. Andrea “Digital Draya” Lashay and Rockelle Love join us to talk about what happens when we treat creativity as a luxury instead of a basic human need and how that mindset quietly fuels stress, isolation, and burnout.

We dig into the surprising relationship between art and agriculture, especially how both artists and farmers can end up working alone, pushing hard, and giving their energy away. Andrea and Rockelle break down how art can regulate the nervous system, build communication and confidence, and reconnect us to meaning through simple practices like storytelling, drumming, movement, breathwork, mindfulness, and getting your hands in the dirt. They also share somatic tools for emotional processing, what it looks like when your body is signaling you to slow down, and why “pause” is often the missing step before real transformation.

You’ll hear how their Art Pharm Project blends art, agriculture, and wellness, plus the stories behind offerings like Colorflow, Wine About It, and the sound and voice bath work that brought a room of women farmers to tears, relief, and connection. We also get into what’s next, including Feel Trips, free community moments during First Thursday, and Rockelle’s intimate virtual Pause to Process session on July 26 via Zoom (DM @RockelleLove if you want details).

A great voice is only part of the story. We’re joined by Shanisha Watkins, aka Luciid Soul, an R&B artist, professional audio engineer, filmmaker, and Air Force veteran who breaks down what it really takes to create music that feels honest and sounds polished, even when you’re recording at home.

We talk through her roots in Winnsboro, South Carolina, the church choir foundation so many singers share, and the classic R&B influences that shaped her tone and control. Then we get into the craft: why “quality” is both personal taste and real science, how mic placement and clean gain staging can save your mix, and what her “light mix” process looks like before sending tracks out for final mixing and mastering. If you’re into audio production, home studio recording, Pro Tools workflows, or just want better vocals, this one is packed with practical insight.

The conversation also goes deeper than music. Luciid Soul opens up about discipline, losing her father, protecting her peace, and learning to “find your people” as your life and career level up. We also dig into her work with kids as a substitute teacher and coach, and why creative expression needs guidance without shame.

A DJ set can look “fine” from the booth and still be falling apart in the crowd. We talk with Clif Tha Supa Producer (CTSP), a DJ, producer, and musician from Hopkins, South Carolina, about the part of the job nobody can fake: creating a feeling in real time and keeping it alive for hours.

Cliff takes us from growing up around vinyl records, band rooms, and strict-but-loving parents to chasing opportunity outside a small town with no music industry. He breaks down how beat battles in downtown Columbia helped him build confidence, sharpen his sound, and learn what happens when your music meets strangers instead of just friends. We also get into his producer-first mindset, his love for the mid-2000s crunk era, and how music theory and saxophone training show up in the way he sequences a night.

From there, we zoom out to what has changed since 2014: trend cycles, tougher rooms, and the rise of lounge culture where dance floors become sections, phones, hookah, and ten mini-parties competing at once. Cliff shares a real bombing story, what it taught him about age groups and nostalgia, and why “reading the room” beats technical flash. We also debate AI in DJing, Serato-era convenience, COVID livestream pivots, and the difference between valuing the process versus chasing results.

If you care about DJ culture, music production, Columbia SC nightlife, or the future of live performance in an AI world, this conversation brings both perspective and practical advice. Subscribe, share this with a friend who loves music, and leave a review telling us what makes a DJ set unforgettable.

A band can sound amazing and still fall apart if nobody owns the vision, the structure, and the hard conversations. We sit down with Alexis Pipkins Jr. (AP) to unpack what it really takes to lead a creative team and why he treats bandleading like management, not vibes. From his Florence, South Carolina roots to building AP & Soulful Touche in Columbia, AP shares how early church music, drumline, and years in media production shaped the way he hears, arranges, and delivers a show.

We talk about his “gumbo” philosophy: unique melodies and many ingredients working together, from horns and rhythm section to spoken word poetry, background vocalists, and even a live painter. He breaks down his rehearsal process (references, voice memos, clear arrangements), the reality of nurturing relationships in a rotating lineup, and why “long money” comes from trust, consistency, and systems that still work when you’re not in the room.

The conversation goes deeper into AI in music and what gets lost when creativity turns into prompts, plus the uncomfortable questions about ownership and where revenue should go. AP also opens up about faith as his routine, the pressure leaders carry, and how direct communication and accountability can keep small issues from turning into blowups. We close with upcoming show dates and how to follow AP & Soulful Touche so you can catch the G.U.M.B.O Experience live in Columbia.

A shoe polish drawing on a grandfather’s door turns into a lifelong blueprint for confidence, craft, and calling. We sit down with Shaneka Jackson-Kinsey, a South Carolina mixed media visual artist and art teacher known for soulful portrait work and bold self-portraits, to talk about how belief at the right moment can shape an entire creative life.

We get into why eyes are her favorite feature to draw, how a terrifying COVID experience pushed her to “leave her mark,” and what changed when she stopped chasing photo-perfect realism and started chasing essence. Shaneka walks us through her process for commissioned portraits, including memorial pieces, and how prayer, music, and attention to spirit guide the choices she makes on the page. If you’ve ever wondered what makes a portrait feel alive, her approach is a clear window into the emotional side of realism.

Then we go practical: the evolution from charcoal to color, why she’s loyal to Prismacolor colored pencils, and what it really takes to balance teaching with a steady stream of commissions. Shaneka also speaks honestly about pricing your artwork, learning to say no, and staying grounded in your message while the conversation around AI art keeps growing. The through-line is simple and challenging: stop believing the lies, protect your voice, and make work that tells the truth.

A lot of artists talk about “the grind,” but Maxx Good$ breaks down what the grind actually looks like when you are an artist, producer, and self-taught audio engineer building your sound from the ground up. We kick things off with his story, born in Brooklyn and moved to upstate South Carolina, and how his mom’s weekly adventures to libraries, museums, and plays shaped the way he thinks about art. That foundation shows up in everything he makes: music is the output, but the real craft is turning feelings into something you can live with.

From there, we get into the deeper creative process. Maxx explains why some of his biggest inspirations come from outside hip hop, pulling from architecture, fashion, film, and design, with Virgil Abloh as a north star for work ethic and taste. We talk sampling as pop art, classical training and sight reading, and the surprising early “beat making” moment that came from a Cartoon Network Andre 3000 game. If you care about music production, songwriting, or building a unique artistic identity, this is packed with practical mindset gems.

We also go places most music interviews avoid: trends versus timeless records, Kanye West as influence and contradiction, and how mental health looks different when the whole world is watching. Maxx gets honest about being a bedroom producer who struggles with collaboration, why teams still matter, and the question we all wrestle with sooner or later: fame or respect.

You can tell a lot about a photographer by what they think the job actually is. With Gavin Boulware, the answer is clear: the camera matters, but trust matters more. We sit down with the Charlotte, North Carolina photographer to trace his path from an $89 point-and-shoot and “trash” early photos to weddings, portraits, and a reputation that makes clients feel safe before he ever clicks the shutter.

We talk about the support system that helped him keep going, the lessons that came from undercharging, and the moment club photography taught him that access is not the same as getting paid. Gavin shares the full story of his first wedding shoot, what he missed, what he learned about the flow of a ceremony, and the small things that still make even seasoned wedding photographers sweat. He also breaks down what “style” really means in post-processing, why he prioritizes sharp and clean edits, and how he uses conversation, humor, and specific prompts to pull real personality into couples portraits and engagement photos.

The business side stays front and center: respecting client privacy, following directions on professional gigs, delivering images on a timeline that helps marketing teams, and remembering that customer service is most of the work. We wrap with legacy, the difference between fame and respect, and how his podcast The Black Dad's Club is growing into a real community through service, including free headshots and resume help.

Subscribe for more conversations with working creatives, share this with a photographer who needs a push, and leave a review with the biggest lesson you’re taking from Gavin’s story.

Fame can hit overnight and disappear even faster, so we sit down with DJ Chuck T to talk about what actually lasts: respect, skill, and a real name in your community. From Charleston, South Carolina to the Carolina hip hop scene, Chuck shares how a military household, an educator’s mindset, and deep church roots shaped his discipline, his voice, and his ability to lead rooms long before he ever touched a stage or turntables.

We also go places most music interviews avoid. Chuck opens up about being ordained as a teenager, why he started studying beyond one tradition, and what he learned reading the Ethiopian Bible and thinking critically about how religion can be used for control. The through-line is personal responsibility: finding God for yourself, building knowledge of self, and refusing to let anyone hand you a ready-made identity.

Then we bring it back to the culture and the craft. Chuck breaks down why authenticity in hip hop is non-negotiable, how copycat trends and “type beat” thinking keep new artists stuck, and what real mentorship sounds like when the truth is uncomfortable. We talk music industry scams, the drug narratives that pull artists off track, and why a business mindset beats short-term clout every time. If you care about artist development, music business education, DJ culture, and the future of rap, this conversation is for you.

Birth prep gets marketed like a checklist, but the hard parts usually show up in the gaps: the first painful latch, the exhaustion at 2 a.m., the moment you realize you do not know the right question to ask a nurse or doctor. We wanted to talk about the real experience, so we brought on Shannon Allen, a postpartum doula and lactation care provider and the founder of Desires of the Heart Doula and Lactation Care in Columbia, South Carolina.

Shannon breaks down what a doula actually does and how that differs from a midwife, then goes deeper into the kind of support most families wish they had sooner. We get into breastfeeding support and the stigma around it, why “natural” does not mean “easy,” and how small tools and simple visuals can stop parents from spiraling when they think they are not producing enough milk. She also shares her own three very different birth stories, including moments that were scary, exhausting, and ultimately grounding, plus a reminder of how powerful a steady partner or support person can be.

We also talk advocacy and informed consent: how to speak up, how to ask what is happening to your body, and why a good doula focuses on empowering you rather than talking for you. If you are researching postpartum doula care, lactation consulting, breastfeeding help, or the midwife vs doula decision, this conversation is built to leave you more prepared and less alone.

If this helped you, subscribe, share it with an expecting parent, and leave a review so more families can find the support they deserve. Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible moms we love!

What if your reflection could show more than skin and bone—what if it revealed your higher-dimensional self? We sit down with multidisciplinary artist Dogon Krigga to trace a path from DIY hip-hop forums and GIMP downloads to museum walls, community residencies, and a practice that treats collage like choreography and sound like sculpture. Dogon shares how mentors Tom Feelings and Walter Rutledge modeled a life where dance, stagecraft, and paper become one language, and how that language now speaks in symbols drawn from ritual, alchemy, and lived experience.

Across our conversation, we unpack the shift from Afrofuturism to Afro-surrealism: from reclaiming Black time as cyclical and ancestral to expanding perception beyond the narrow band of visible light. Dogon’s work asks viewers to see themselves as more than the mirror allows, to recognize aura, memory, and possibility layered into the everyday. That same lens turns political, too. In “They Only Kill You If You’re Righteous,” Dogon memorializes Panthers, queer and trans icons, and modern activists targeted by the state, using collage as curriculum—naming patterns of suppression while lifting up models of mutual aid and collective care.

We get practical about process and impact: mental prototyping, holding a piece in mind like a living gallery, then rendering with technical rigor; why the value of art lives in what it does, not just how scarce it is; and how the “digital isn’t real art” myth crumbles when you consider film, photography, and the reproducibility of culture. Most important, Dogon centers access. From open studios to collaborative collage workshops, they’re building spaces where people learn the tools, translate sound into image, and claim voice. The next step is bold and simple: free art kits for unhoused neighbors, because creativity is as essential to dignity as food and first aid.

Join us for a conversation that moves from software to spirit, from mentors to martyrs, and from gallery walls to street-level care. If this resonates, share it with a friend, subscribe for more, and leave a review to help others find the show. Your reflections keep this community growing.

What if the thing you lacked most became your greatest superpower? That’s the thread running through our conversation with self-taught muralist Ija Charles, whose first “supplies” were berries, dirt, and rhinestones pulled off jeans—and whose work now lights up schools, galleries, and whole city blocks across South Carolina. We dig into the choices that shaped her: staying rooted in Columbia to fight brain drain, learning speed and accuracy at a bowling alley portrait hustle, and refusing to undersell originals while making art accessible through prints, posters, and everyday items.

Ija opens up about the sting of early dismissal—“dust collectors”—and the vindication of selling out at Essence Fest. From there, she unpacks a pricing mindset that protects long-term value and a distribution strategy that welcomes fans at every budget. We explore her leap to large-scale murals, the influence of a brick-mason grandfather, and why public walls double as open classrooms when kids join the process. Inside the studio, she’s pushing mixed media deeper: works like Sisters stitch fabric from childhood clothes directly into paint, turning memory into material and intention into design.

We also wade into the tech waters. Ija treats NFTs as optional provenance paired with physical art, and she’s getting calls to repaint over AI-driven vinyls as clients rediscover the allure of the human hand. Sustainability is the other pillar: therapy, boundaries, and a 3 a.m.–3 p.m. schedule that protects focus and life outside the canvas. Travel for projects becomes research—history tours, local food, and gardens—feeding recurring themes of medicine, nature, and community care. Before we wrap, she shares new projects with USC, SC State, BullStreet, and local schools, plus how to commission work or buy prints.

If you believe art can change a block and a life, you’ll feel right at home here. Listen, share with a friend who needs a creative push, and leave a review to help more people find the show.

What do you leave when you’re gone? That question drives our conversation with DJ, director, and community builder Bryant Kirk White—whose path runs from college fashion runways to weddings, youth mentorship, and a bold vision for a new kind of educational media. Bryant shares how his grandfather’s passing transformed discomfort into fuel, turning purpose from a vague idea into daily practice. We unpack why self-awareness is the most important subject never taught, and how A Bevy now supports three stages of growth—high school students, 18–22-year-old collegians, and young professionals who mentor the next wave.

Music is Bryant’s toolkit for empathy and design. He walks us through learning to DJ at 15 on CDs, mastering selection before flash, and shaping energy at events where stress is inevitable and joy must be engineered. From “Operation Make the Bride Happy” to House of Happiness, he breaks down how to build an experience people actually remember: clean transitions, clear cues, and a focus on what matters when the lights go down. When events underperform, Bryant reframes the goal—serve the ten like they were one hundred, and make the room feel seen.

We also explore honest marketing in a world of algorithms, including the infamous “missing” campaign that launched a tour by confronting mortality head-on. Then we look ahead: SOSA, the School of Self-Awareness, a digital hub where members connect across life stages and turn values into action through local sectors. And A Novice Studio, Bryant’s aim to craft a modern PBS for Gen Z—shows that are artful, practical, and deeply human. If you’ve ever wondered how to turn pain into purpose and purpose into design, this one’s for you.

What if every person you photographed felt seen as royalty? We bring on Darius Dior—photographer, filmmaker, and kingdom music artist—to explore how faith, family legacy, and street-level community turn ordinary nights into living archives. From a childhood of Brooklyn pews and Polaroid snaps to the weekly rituals of Carolina line dances, karaoke rooms, and student blocks, Darius shows how showing up to give—portraits free, presence real—creates a love exchange that technology can’t fake.

We get candid about AI. Yes, it’s a useful tool; no, it isn’t alive. Darius draws a firm line where craft begins: presence, eye, timing, and the courage to let imperfection breathe. He breaks down why edits now overshadow seeing, how intentional “mistakes” become signatures, and why criticism is a gift that proves the work still stirs feeling. If you’ve wondered whether phones replaced photographers, his answer is simple: machines can process pixels, but they can’t carry a room without stealing it.

We also talk habit and balance—sleeping when the city sleeps, training the body, guarding devotion, and building a life that keeps you available to family and truth. Darius shares new work, including Let Your Light Shine and his Him and Me trilogy, plus how Thinking Kingdom Media centers dignity and reconciliation in every frame. It’s a masterclass in community photography, creative stamina, and making purpose-driven art that outlives the scroll.

What if bright colors were a trap door into harder truths? We sit down with artist and educator Kanish Harmon to explore how beauty, discipline, and bold storytelling invite people into real conversations about identity, addiction, and value.

Kanish’s path runs through Charleston County School of the Arts, Claflin University, and Howard University, where a pivotal nudge from a professor led her to embrace the illustrative roots she once tried to hide. That shift birthed large-format works like her Negrescence series, mapping William E. Cross Jr.’s stages of Black identity across panels that fuse realism with comic language. She shares how oil painting anchors her process, why she rotates mediums to keep projects moving, and how color functions like a welcome mat before the difficult talk begins.

On the business side, Kanish gets unusually granular. She times her hours, prices by complexity, uses contracts, and asks for 50 percent up front to protect both client and artist. She explains why “exposure” isn’t fair pay, how to avoid resentment by setting boundaries, and the importance of knowing when to say no—and when to refer a job to another artist. We also walk through “Sugarcoated,” a candy-bright piece from her Mad World series that hides syringes and powder in plain sight, reframing dependency from opioids to caffeine and Red 40. Then we turn to the Harmonious collection, where gold leaf and royal palettes crown Black and brown subjects of varied body types, including vitiligo, with everyday regality.

You’ll hear about the realities of big work—U-Hauls, storage, and family road trips—and the community that fuels it, from a husband who drives all night to a dad who sells prints in grocery store aisles. We close with practical ways to support artists: share the work, book a mural, vote That Art Nerd LLC for Best of South Carolina, and remember that thoughtful feedback can be as vital as a purchase.

If this conversation sparked something, tap follow, share it with a friend who loves art with a spine, and leave a review to help more listeners find the show.

The sunflower has a story to tell. We sit down with Charleston’s Daniel Green—videographer, painter, graffiti kid turned worldbuilder—to unpack how a single character named Kai grew into a living universe of color, culture, and quiet resistance. What begins as a bright, welcoming bloom unfolds into layered scenes about ancestry, healing, and the resources that truly sustain us.

Daniel traces his path from Exit 209 to online forums where graffiti prompts taught him critique, flow, and the discipline to iterate. He explains why Allen Iverson’s down-to-earth brand shaped his own approach to creative identity, and how years of client design work sparked burnout that led him back to drawing for himself. That return birthed Kai: a sunflower whose name can mean happiness, placed in tableaux that test what happiness requires—light, minerals, community, memory. Nature becomes metaphor and mirror. Beauty invites you in; subtext lingers and deepens with every look.

We also dive into the business: how “know, like, and trust” turns one-off gigs into long partnerships with festivals and brands; why range across dance, drums, directing, and design helps him lead complex shoots; and how he protects joy by embracing notes without surrendering voice. Daniel breaks down NFTs in plain terms—scarcity, community, a recognizable face—and shares how he borrows the mechanics without the hype, using paintings as currency for a future animated series set in Kai’s world. It’s a blueprint for artists who want to grow an audience, build IP, and keep their soul intact.

If you’re hungry for creative inspiration rooted in Charleston culture, brand storytelling you can actually use, and art that hides depth behind glow, you’ll feel at home here. Follow Art of Daniel Green and Return of the Flower, then share the episode with someone who loves bold visuals and bigger ideas. Activism Through Literature: Tayler Simon's Mission & Liberation Is Lit

THG talks with the incredible Tayler Simon, a passionate podcaster and the visionary behind Liberation is Lit. Known as the Radical Reader, Tayler created Liberation is Lit to do more than just discuss books; she aims to ignite meaningful conversations and cultivate a strong community of readers who believe in the power of literature as a force for social change.

Tayler shares her journey into the #bookstagram community, where she sought out fellow advocates for liberation, only to find a stark contrast between mainstream book lovers who shunned political discussions and smaller platforms that embraced literature as a catalyst for change. Her lifelong love for reading, sparked by listening to books on cassette tapes as a child, has only grown, leading her to offer unsolicited book recommendations and dive deep into discussions about the stories that shape our world.

In 2019, Tayler took the leap and launched a blog dedicated to exploring how the books she read influenced her worldview and inspired movements towards liberation. Through this journey, she found a vibrant community of like-minded readers who recognize the transformative power of storytelling.

Join us as Tayler delves into the mission of Liberation is Lit—not just as a bookseller but as a movement dedicated to equipping radical readers with the tools to become activists. Her podcast, also titled Liberation is Lit, available on Spotify, serves as a powerful platform for exploring stories that amplify voices, challenge societal norms, and encourage understanding. Tune in for an inspiring conversation about the intersection of literature and activism!
