Dr Jane Shankar talks about the process of researching her PhD, which involved using archive records to write a historical novel set in the village of Dode at the time of the Black Death.
Her novel employs a dual narrative—with one half set in the mid-fourteenth century, and the other in the near pre-sent day—where the central archivist character ‘discovers’ a character from the past.
Jane explains the role of the archive (and Kent Archives and Local History team) in her research and writing process, and explains why using original documents enhanced her novel’s characterisation. She also shares how her exciting discovery of a medieval pastedown fragment shaped her work.

Dr John Bulaitis, Canterbury Christ Church University, sheds light on an often forgotten but fascinating piece of Kentish history dubbed the Tithe War by the national press.
During the 1880s and again during the 1930s, Kentish farming communities fought the tithe, a payment to the Church and other tithe owners dating back to medieval times. They confronted bailiffs, disrupted auctions and blockaded farms to prevent seizure of stock for tithe non-payment.
Dr Bulaitis' talk focuses on two leading protagonists, Edward Peterson whose support of the tithe began in 1886 after he served an order to seize sheep from a farm in Smarden that led to the imprisonment of a local farmer, and Frank Allen, the tithe collector at Canterbury Cathedral who became the main organiser of the National Tithe Payers’ Association, which animated the fight against the tithe in the 1930s.

Dr Claire Carrothers, Queen Mary University of London visited Kent Archives to give a brilliant talk on Murder, Madness and Miracles: The Shrine of Thomas Becket and its Mad Pilgrims in Twelfth-Century Canterbury.
From giddiness and demonic possession, to visions of the Thomas Becket flying around the cathedral dolling out cures, Claire takes us through Canterbury's 12th Century fascinating miracle collections.

Our archive and local history collections tell the story of Kent and beyond, and are a focal point for the county’s heritage and culture, most of which you can access when you visit the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone.
While the archives consist of original records, often handwritten and unique, created in the course of human activities, the local history collection consists largely of printed material and includes published original records, as well as printed books. The collections tell the stories of people’s lives and their communities through diaries, eyewitness accounts, records of crime and punishment, titles to property, newspapers, photographs, maps and posters, and more.

Liz Finn and Ellie Thomas from Kent Libraries and Archives talk about the film Mädchen in Uniform (1931). Written and co-directed by women, and featuring an all-female cast, Mädchen in Uniform carries the honour of showing the first, female gaze, lesbian kiss in a feature film.
To celebrate the director Leontine Sagan's birthday and for this year's LGBT+ History Month with its theme of Politics in Art, Liz and Ellie talk about the playwright Christa Winsloe, discuss how the original play made it on-screen, and what the changing political landscape in the 20th Century meant for LGBT representation in media, both in Berlin and worldwide.

More than 740,000 British servicemen were killed or died in the First World War. The poignant story of the Orchard family from Folkestone illustrates the human cost of the war and how archives can help us bring these personal stories to light.

Mark Connelly is Professor of Modern British History at the University of Kent. He works closely with the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and has assisted the Department of Culture, Media and Sport with its activities during the First World War centenary.

Dr Claire Bartram examines famous and not-so-famous writers, readers and bibliophiles living in Kent and considers the social circumstances that underpins what Peter Laslett famously termed the ‘bookish’ reputation of the Kentish in Tudor times.
Claire Bartram teaches early modern literature at Canterbury Christ Church University and is especially interested in writers and readers living in Kent in the sixteenth century. Her recent edited collection of essays Kentish Book Culture: Writers, Archives, Libraries and Sociability 1400-1660, (Peter Lang, 2020) explores the writing practices and book collections of a range of individuals in early modern Kent, including monks, a mariner and an apothecary as well as members of the gentry and clergy and urban administrators.

The White Horse is the ubiquitous symbol of the county of Kent but what exactly does it mean and for how long has it been used?
James Lloyd gained a Cambridge doctorate for research into local government in Anglo-Saxon England. He currently combines roles as an archivist at the Kent History and Library Centre and Librarian at Aylesford Priory. Kent Archives hold the largest collection of historic material relating to the ancient county of Kent dating back to 699 AD, from the earliest charters written on sheepskin to the present state of the art digital images. Our archive and local history collections tell the story of Kent and beyond, and are a focal point for the county’s heritage and culture, most of which you can access when you visit the Kent History and Library Centre in Maidstone.
While the archives consist of original records, often handwritten and unique, created in the course of human activities, the local history collection consists largely of printed material and includes published original records, as well as printed books. The collections tell the stories of people’s lives and their communities through diaries, eyewitness accounts, records of crime and punishment, titles to property, newspapers, photographs, maps and posters, and more.

Ellie from Kent Libraries meets with Emily Ghassempour, co-founder of Books for Change and one of this year's judges for The Diverse Book Awards which were announced last week. They talk about her work campaigning, running anti-racist workshops and fundraising to provide diverse books to pupils in local schools in Kent, her role as a judge for the children's book list of The Diverse Book Awards.
Books for Change was born in lockdown 2020 from a love of diverse children’s literature, lived experience of racism and the need for schools to diversify their bookshelves. Find out more about their work and campaigns at https://booksforchange.co.uk
Only 2% of lead characters in children's books are from a Black, Asian or minority ethnic background and remain significantly under-represented in comparison to the UK primary school population where 33.5% of children are from a minority ethnic background. The number of authors and illustrators of colour published in the UK has grown to over 8%, rising from less than 6% in 2017, so there still needs to be huge improvement.

Seventy years ago on 4 May 1951, the nation celebrated The Festival of Britain. The idea of a festival was conceived some years earlier as "a tonic to the nation", to raise spirits after the Second World War. The landmark event also marked the centenary of The Great Exhibition and celebrated the arts, science, industry and design.

For 2020's Libraries Week we were thrilled to host a conversation with Richard Ovenden, director of Oxford University’s Bodleian Library. He is the author of Burning the Books, which was published in the beginning of September 2020 when it was also BBC Radio 4’s Book of the Week. The book takes us on a fascinating journey through 3,000 years of the destruction of information and the battle for its survival.
Richard also grew up in Kent, and is full of praise for his local library at Deal which he talks about in this interview with Libraries, Registration and Archives' head of service James Pearson.
