Do you feel like your family and friends don’t support you with your illness?
I’ve been there.
We all want the world to give a monkey’s when we get sick. We’ve had a life-altering experience, why isn’t the world feeling this too?

When we are kind to ourselves, it can help us to respond more effectively when we face challenges as it can help us to feel what we are feeling, and by being kind to ourselves it can make it easier to be kind to others. When we are kind to ourselves it can seem like we’re making excuses. For instance, when we are exhausted and feeling unwell the kind thing to do would be to rest, but instead we see this as laziness.
We wouldn't do that to others.

I don’t know about you, but I’ve never been the type of person that keeps my house immaculate, almost to show home level.
Pre-illness I used to get home from food shopping on a Saturday morning, and would blitz my way through the entire house in a couple of hours. But when I got sick, it could take all day to work through the smallest room, let alone the whole house.
When I got sick I really struggled with how unclean the house felt. In some ways, I was too unwell to care. In others, having an unclean house made me feel worse.
So these are the 3 shifts I had to make.
Do you ever feel like the world is against you? You just want one thing to be simple and straightforward so you can cross it off the list.
We all have moments when one problem comes after another, leaving you feeling like the world is against you. You try to stay on top of things but it feels like the harder you try, the worse things get, and the problems just keep on coming. The worry brings the anxiety, which brings the sleep problems, which brings eating the crappy food, and the cycle continues.
But in order for you to believe that the world is on your side, and not against you, to get your thoughts and emotions back under control, you take small steps, one at a time.
These are my favourite small step strategies to do just that.
Today I talk about 5 energy vampires that can cause mental, physical and emotional fatigue.
Today I talk about the healthy ways you can get those happiness hormones. Happiness hormones are the chemicals that our body naturally produces to increase our wellbeing.

I have been terrible at journalling my entire life. It’s as if there's a perfectionism to it that I just do not achieve.

Aaah rest. Something we no longer seem to know how to do. Our hustle culture has expectations that we have to be on the go constantly, and rest is a reward for working yourself to exhaustion, causing us to feel guilty when we take a break. So today, I want to ponder on what rest really is, and different ways we can add it to our day.

Today I want to ponder on some warning signs that you’re pretending to be happy, and what you can do about it. From someone who knows. We all have those moments when something doesn’t feel right. We can get sick and/or we go through a period of grieving, and everyone understands it. For a while. But there’s something you can’t shake, and as everyone around you expects you to be moving on by now, you instead start to put on a happy face.
It’s normal in a setting of strangers, you don’t always want to tell complete strangers what you’re going through so you pretend that you’re fine.
However.
When it comes to friends and family, feeling like you can’t truly express your emotions leads to resentment and anger. What are some of these signs?

I am sure you’re already aware of the benefits of decluttering. An uncluttered home and life promotes mental clarity, and less stuff through choice means less likely to spend money on things you don’t need. Less stuff also means less mess can be created so less mess to be tidied up. Which is an absolute win for spoonies, because it means less work and less feeling like we’re not getting anything done. But, as with all things, it can be overwhelming to get started, so here’s my top 5 areas in life to declutter and how to do so spoonie-style.

If given the choice, which would you rather be in? A relationship where you dismiss yourself, minimise yourself, and be mean to yourself, get irritated with yourself, sabotaging all of your hopes and dreams? Or would you rather be in one where you cultivate self love? Every day you are kind, gentle and you work towards your hopes and your dreams and you go to bed every night knowing that it doesn't matter what anyone else says, you love you.
So if the second option is your preferred option, here are five ways that you can begin that journey.

Today I want to talk to you about a not-to-do list when chronically ill. I absolutely love having a to-do list, I love making lists. I love crossing things off lists.
When I got sick, my to-do list had to become streamlined and batched. Long gone were the days of being able to do all the things on all the days. One list I had to create, and probably stuck to the most, was a not-to-do list.

100 episodes!! Wow. I didn't realise that when I was recording, but here we are. 100 episodes. What a milestone.
Today I want to talk to you about coming home to yourself.
Sometimes life dismantles the self you’ve known and you have to begin the seemingly complex task of starting over, rebuilding, and finding your new compass and anchor.
It can be a shock to the system. I often hear “I didn’t see this coming. What do I do now?!”

I got to this point in early 2012, and thanks to the proverbial onion layer, again in autumn of 2022, but didn’t want to face up to it until I had to earlier this year. What point am I talking about? Being sick of my own sh*t.

Today I want to talk about habits that are actually signs of resentment.
Holding on to resentment can be bad for your mental and physical health. It can cause stress, anxiety, depression, and it can cause chronic health problems.

Recently I had to ask myself, do I want to do more, or do I want to keep thinking I’m doing enough. Listen in for the thing I'm referring to, but in the end I have to decide that I am doing this for me. It makes grief easier to deal with. It makes my illness easier to deal with.
The reason I called this episode Ask More of Yourself is because to get better it requires you to do more.

After many years of tears, hatred, and basically mistreating myself, I made a vow to be kind to my body, and owed it an apology.
There’s plenty of research around the body keeps the score, and how suppressed emotions around trauma can manifest into illnesses. So the path along the healing journey also includes befriending our bodies. For when we can like our bodies, we can start to feel safe in them to listen to them, and to feel what we are feeling.
Listen for my body apology, and I hope it inspires you to do the same.

An episode about believing in yourself. Even when.
Even when you are feeling scared.
Even when you are feeling overwhelmed.
Even when you are doubting that you can get better.
And I get it.
Over 10 years ago, after living with my illness for nearly 3 years, I had to believe that I could either figure out my health struggles, or I could keep on feeling rubbish about it.
I decided that my self-doubt was no longer a valid reason for missing out on my life, on being a runner, for something more than existing. Everything changed.
I’m asking, what about you? Are you ready?

When was the last time you felt lucky? I’d hazard a guess that most of the time you think that others are lucky, and the only luck you tend to find is bad luck. Fate. Destiny. Kismet. Serendipity. Whatever you want to call luck, it’s as if it’s always connected to our most happiest moments. Sometimes, it turns out our most difficult times were a wonderful stroke of luck too. And what about when it comes to making your own luck? Or manifesting? Just wishing for something doesn’t make it so. Creating a journal based upon looking for surprising and valuable discoveries can help to spot you have more good in your life than you realise. And I know that you can do this, because if you can pick apart a couple of not-so-great events to connect the dots on what went wrong, then you can definitely do the same for connecting dots of what went right!

I get asked all the time “I want to get better, but why do I sabotage myself? I think I know what I need to do, but I don’t do it”. Variations on this are lacking willpower, unmotivated, even scared.
It’s not as if the internet isn’t full of solutions to google. If you want to lose weight or increase your fruit and veg on a daily basis, there’s a ton of suggestions. If you want to try increasing your steps, or feel ready to try running, there’s plenty of plans that are a variation on couch to 5k.
Once you choose, you then go through four stages dictating what we do. When it comes to recovery from a chronic illness, we have the exact same four stages, and that’s what I’m talking about today.

Decluttering a home can be difficult, especially if you have years’ worth of memories stored up. Equally, a lot of those memories could also be causing you stress.
Mindfulness has been proven to be an essential practice in managing stress, lowering blood pressure and helping to increase focus.
If you think about how much information you take through your eyes for your brain to process, the more stuff you have around you the harder your brain has to work, increasing fatigue, and making you feel like you have a million more things to do because you’re constantly shoulding on yourself by saying I should load the dishwasher, I should do the washing, to I should tidy that drawer, I should put those things away etc etc.
So what is the connection between decluttering and mindfulness and self-love?

Everyone seems to be at a default mode of constantly stressed, so much so that it’s not often I hear other emotions get mentioned. It also seems easier to tell ourselves that we’re stressed than to have to think about how else we might actually be feeling, and stress is usually easily blamed on external sources and not ourselves whereas admitting feeling something else might mean we have to acknowledge our own responsibility in something.
When I went back to my day-job after surgery last year, I felt anxious. I was given an extra role to take on for a few months, which definitely caused stress, this increased the anxiety, and yet I now know that anxiety was actually sadness because I was grieving. We all know that long-term stress and anxiety can be detrimental for both physical and mental health. We all know that when we have a chronic illness, both will follow. It’s a vicious cycle.

On the previous episode, episode 83, I talked about how I mis-read the signs of grief, and my trauma, and would often mistake them for M.E. symptoms. How I shut myself down, numbed myself, to the pain I was feeling, to the shame and self-hatred I was feeling.

On today’s episode I’m talking about chronic health and the menstrual cycle, and how the two affect each other.
One of the things I learned very early in my illness is how much having a period exhausts my body.
Since my operation, I can no longer control how often these symptoms are coming. I can no longer control how exhausted I feel and how the simplest things that could seem difficult enough with my illness, for a few days become near-impossible.
So I thought I’d share a little more info about the menstrual cycle, and what you can do to still feel somewhat in control of your body.

There’s always those big times of the year when we are prodded to make changes towards better health, New Year and pending summer holidays being the two prominent ones.
And so often we hear people say after they get sick that they took their health for granted.
We don’t have to wait til then to be motivated to make a change.
But it doesn’t have to be so hard. For some of you, it can’t be that hard.

I’m sharing why you can’t hate yourself to the body you want, and why we think we need to hate ourselves in the first place.
All day, every day, we are exposed to the media full of fixes for our flaws. We have become so brainwashed by it many of the times we just don’t question it, and instead start to question ourselves.
Something we may have liked previously about ourselves suddenly appears on the subconscious list to pick fault with. But if you can believe your body has no flaws, that we’re all meant to look different, then you can get to work on accepting your body for the powerhouse that it is.
Once you accept it, you can choose to change it. And that change is going to be a lot easier, a lot less painful, and a lot more satisfying, when you come at it from love.

I’m sharing something that has happened in my life that led to me creating a story for myself that has eroded my confidence ever since. It’s something we all do on some level or another. Something happens to you, you create a story from it, you ding your own confidence. Creating stories like this is your brain’s survival instinct. Now it no longer has real lions to worry about eating you, it creates illogical lions in your day to day world, sometimes for very logical reasons. Stories that will have you thinking you can’t do something again.

Today I’m talking about what people can expect of you now you live with a chronic illness.

Today I'm talking about my five tips for planning a healthy week to help you take back your life from chronic illness.
Many of us with chronic illnesses are overwhelmed and feel out of control, with too much to do, too much in our heads, too many people telling us we can no longer do the things we want to still try and do, and with past experiences leaving us feeling judged and shamed for our lives being different now.
But, it doesn’t have to be that way.
It’s disempowering when a plan is built on I can’t or I shouldn’t. I hate to tell you this, but it doesn’t work… do you really want to spend your life avoiding all the stuff society has said you can’t and shouldn’t do?
We must make plans that are realistic when it comes to making changes towards living with our chronic illness instead of surviving with it.
This is the process I follow to make empowered plans for myself.

On today’s episode I’m talking about how to feel abundant when your health really sucks.
Because let’s face it, when we’re feeling awful it’s not that easy to see the wood for the trees. If you believe in like begets like, or manifestation, this is a really important thing to deal with so that you don’t start to manifest more negative things into your life that you feel you can’t handle right now, and make the situation worse.
You can’t stop everything that life is going to throw at you, but you can be prepared for how you deal with it.
Control feels snatched away from us when chronic health interferes, and I’m all for getting any of it back.
This isn’t about overnight, silver bullets. This is about a foundation for lifelong happiness, abundance, and all the rest you want. But, remember, you have to do the mental work first. Start with your mindset and it will be much easier to take those actions to feel abundant when your health really sucks.

On today’s episode I’m talking about your confidence secret weapon – what it is, how it works, how to discover it, and how to use it to your best advantage.
Scent plays a huge role in how you feel and can trigger emotions such as feeling happy, relaxed, sexy, and confident. This is because your sense of smell, the olfactory system, is directly connected to the limbic system, the primitive part of the brain, that interprets memories and emotions.
When you smell a scent that you connect to positively, it can instantly make you feel confident and in a great positive mood. You literally light up, stand a little taller and have a smile on your face when it happens.
So, how can you know which scent will make you feel like you can conquer the world? Or, just help you go out through the front door?
I’m really excited to share with you that I have created a quiz for you to answer a few questions to reveal your perfect match power scent, intrinsically echoed through your many varied choices in life.

Every year I pick a word to represent what I want for the year ahead. All decisions lead towards this word.
As I was thinking about the word I want for 2022, I realised that I’ve only ever chosen positive words. I very much believe in choosing positivity, and looking forward, and looking for the good in things.
I also believe that we should not avoid the negatives, or pretend they don’t exist. Sometimes we just have to sit with discomfort.

I’m keeping this short to avoid the potential for a very long episode as this is a real annoyance for me. I was in a meeting recently where quite a few people interrupted each other to ask questions, and only the women apologised for it as they started to speak. Why are we doing this? I do know some guys who do too, but I’ve noticed it’s mainly women.
When we have something to truly apologise, then yes, apologise. But we seem to throw this word around so easily in everyday life saying sorry for the tiniest thing. And when we don't actually have anything to apologise for.
What are you apologising for?

Today, I’m talking about 3 ways to get yourself out of a rut. It’s so easy to fall into a settled or established habit or course of action, and we usually say we’re in a rut when it’s a boring one.
As we approach December, it’s very common for people to realise the end of the year is upon us, the last few months have flown by, and you’ve done pretty much naff all with that time.
It’s understandable to want to pin the blame for the rut on outside sources, but most of the time, you can’t change anything except yourself. Focussing on things you can’t control doesn’t help. Neither does crossing your fingers, hoping for the best, or sitting back and waiting for things to magically improve.
Instead, consider things from a realistic perspective. Ignore the external factors and consider which of your actions (or lack of actions) contributed.

This is at its most basic, because you’re not with me for my intuition to pick up on what you’re saying, to ask different questions, or to call you on your crap you tell yourself and others, which is my fave part of coaching and being coached, seeing the blind spots and shadows of what we don’t see or don’t want to see.

We will get creative and come up with a few ideas of what you could do to help you with your one thing. This is not what you WILL do, but about what you COULD do, even if it seems a little crazy or impossible. Some of my biggest achievements have come out of the crazy.

If you’ve been on any self-development journey, you know that by the time you come out the other end, there’s a whole load of other issues that have popped up. The onion theory. Keep peeling away those layers. We then feel that we must then start working on those new issues too. If we don’t, have we somehow failed, or we’re not good enough?

On today’s episode I’m talking about if your happiness is non-negotiable.
As women, we’re expected to put others first.
I’m always saying that you get to choose. Because it’s true - you do!
Of course, you can choose to do what someone tells you to do.
But, you don't have to think, feel, say or do anything that you don’t want to. Or anything anyone tells you to. You get to choose.

You can do something about it! Just because right now you don’t know what to do, it is possible to find a solution.
On today's episode I’m continuing on from the last, episode 25, of the most toxic word we use – should – to discuss the danger of maybe.
It can be a real challenge to commit to future plans when we're still working on our recovery.
You don’t like to say no, so you say maybe. But saying maybe is more harmful than saying no.

On today’s episode I’m talking about the most damaging word that we all use. It’s so stuck in our vocab, we often don’t realise we’re saying it, and we rarely put two and two together that how we’re feeling in that moment has something to do with one particular word. We think that it’s helping us, but is actually making things worse. In using it we make ourselves feel bad in so many ways. Today, I want to ponder how we use this word every day, the messages we give ourselves, and how we can replace it to give ourselves that choice I’m always talking about.
On today's episode I’m talking about why we need a mental first aid kit, what’s in mine to give you ideas for what to put in yours, and how to use it.

We are unwell, and we are worn out.

Today I’m talking about how you can keep it simple. This applies for if you’re unwell, if you’re moving towards recovery, or for anyone who’s feeling a little overwhelmed with what’s happening to them and/or around them.

Today, I’m talking about judgemental people and what you can do to deal with them and what they say.
If judgement can be hurtful, shameful and upsetting and can impact on our emotions, confidence, identity and behaviour, it’s important then to consider how you deal with judgement so you can minimise the impact on yourself.

On today’s episode I’m talking about why it’s more important that you consider the how, and not the what of the things you’re doing.
When we’re living with a chronic health condition we tend to just want to be recovered and well again. We try anything and everything. Some things help, and some don’t. But, why?

Traditionally this time of year is spring cleaning season.
We clean the home of all the winter rest and darkness, ready for the light of summer. So why not do the same for our minds?
